Athlete here. Gave SLT a shot while visiting my in laws for Fourth of July, because I do Pilates for cross training 3-4 times a week and wanted to stay consistent while on vacation for a few days. I had done two Lagree classes prior to trying SLT as well as a Solidcore class at one of their LA studios. I opted for SLT this time only because they had a 2/$40 intro deal which was a little more cost effective than paying the drop in rate at the Solidcore studio nearby. I showed up for my first of two classes, and the reception girl was nice and gave me a refresher on the megaformer but warned me "you'll be lost and that's okay". She actually advised me to "copy others" if that became the case. That should have been my sign to leave, as Lagree and Pilates are both about having proper form, not just "copying" another participant which can lead to injury. If your cueing is that bad where participants are "lost," perhaps you shouldn't market it as an "all levels" class. Then I find out the instructor I had signed up for was switched to Farah, which should have been my second sign to leave. Dang, was she is rough. And not in a good way. She's forceful, impatient, and comes off very pompous. She actually had us hold movements to a beat at one point, like what? You're supposed to count at a steady pace; what instructor worth their salt coordinates the movements to their playlist? I spent the first 20 minutes debating on whether I should just walk out before I decided to ignore her vibe and just sweat it out. Instead of leaving empowered to take on my day, I left demoralized and disappointed. Then I took Alexandra's class on my second of two visits, and it was night and day. She's truly the only reason I'm giving SLT 3 stars and not 1. She was the saving grace, as she offered fantastic cues and did good demonstrations that were easy to follow. If I'm "copying" anyone, it should be the trained instructor. Alexandra was also attentive to everyone and offered gentle corrections when needed. She was courteous and asked if I'm okay with hands-on corrections, which I appreciated as well. I thanked her for turning my experience at SLT around and left her class feeling strong and inspired. Can't say I'd ever go back to SLT though. I prefer studios that are a bit more professional and prioritize safety and form. Since those two classes, I racked up 6 more Lagree classes in California on top of my normal Pilates routine. Yet to have any experience get close to rivaling the awful class I had with Farah, and I vow to walk out of any instructor's class that times a movement to "when the beat drops." read more

Get ready to sweat (I accidentally had written the word "swear" and was going to remove it but realized that's probably a reality too!) shake and burn- don't go if you're tired / dehydrated/ hung over / hungry etc - you really need to be in top shape to try this workout Especially If it's your first time GO EARLY! The owner did a nice job of showing me the machine and explaining aaaalllllll the parts pieces and accessories... I teach on a traditional reformer and this was an ENTIRELY different ball game !! The coach was very good at constantly coming up to me and correcting form and pointing out when I wasn't listening/ understanding cues correctly- even your BRAIN needs to be turned on and ready to listen cause it's ALOT ! This review is not about the trainers. All the trainers are great I would give them 5 stars. But to make a reservation for the class is impossible especially for the weekend. Why selling memberships if it's not enough classes ? All weekend classes blocked like 2 weeks in advance. Also the space is always dirty and dusty. This review is about Farah who teaches at the Short Hills location. Previously, I took the intro/essentials class and this was my 4th class. I'm still getting the hang of the moves and am a new beginner. The class I signed up for with Farah said "All Levels" on the registration. I know it's intense which is why I'm doing SLT and I give myself credit for getting started and showing up with a can do attitude. Of course there are still many moves I struggle with and am looking to others to see how the move should be done. Farah noticing that my positioning was off was quick to adjust me and offer stern directives coupled with forceful adjustments. Her tone in my view was overly stern, aggressive and condescending and a real turn off for a new beginner. I told her I was a beginner and she treated me like I was an idiot who just wasn't getting it (on the first try of a new move.). It made me not want to ever have her for an instructor again (I'll be sure if that) and frankly makes me reluctant to come back at all. I've had Jennifer twice and she is great and never made me feel stupid for being new to moves. After class Farah asked if I'd taken the Essentials class at 12:30pm and that would be her suggestion. I told her I did take that class at the beginning of signing up with SLT but I now have childcare so can't make that time to take it again. But apparently that's the only time you can take that class. As it's so important to learn the fundamental moves you'd think they'd make it easier for you to take that class. SLT in Short Hills is my favorite workout. I've been going since it opened 3 years ago and love it! Prior to doing SLT I only did cardio, mainly running and tennis. Wanting to add strengthening to my exercise routine, I found SLT to be the perfect combination of resistance training and cardio. I am able to work every body part, even ones I didn't know existed. Because you are moving through each exercise without rest and pushing your body to the limit, the class also fills my cardio addiction. I also believe the resistance training has helped me in my running and tennis by preventing injuries and building core strength. The teachers I've had at SLT are amazing! They are encouraging, friendly and well trained. The classes are never the same so I never get bored. I am always trying new things in every class. The studio is always clean and inviting. Also, the staff is very responsive to any questions or requests. I would highly recommend SLT to anyone looking to change up their work out routine or just anyone. It's super challenging and effective!!! I love it! read more

By far the hardest studio class I have ever taken! (In a good way) Keeps me challenged the entire time and I am always sore for 1 or 2 days after. The instructors are very friendly and knowledgeable. Jennifer made me feel very comfortable and she was extremely encouraging during my first class. The music is super motivating and the studio is beautiful! A great muscle building workout! I took four classes while I was in town, all with different instructors. Amy was, BY FAR, the best. She was super nice and very authentic (the rest were nice but it felt forced). Overall, every instructor was super knowledgeable and helpful. It's a tough workout but fun! Definitely not worth $36/class but if you get the first-time price, it's more worth it. One other downside is that they don't have showers read more
