If you want high quality, detailed work, with a nice finish, this is NOT the guy. The job was to enlarge an interior crawl space opening and replace the existing frame/door with an insulated door and weather stripping. It was $375 plus an additional $125 for insulating materials/labor. For this price I was expecting a completely finished, well installed product, with quality materials and remaining mess/job materials to be cleaned up. The first concern was that a small drop blanket was used in front of the door. But, knowing that you are cutting into concrete block and the subsequent dust that permeates the air, this would hardly be sufficient. The smoke alarms in the entire house went off due to the amount of dust that was created and not blocked appropriately to keep from getting all over the house. When the job was finished and I pointed out the materials and dust collected around the work site, including a nail left behind, I was informed that he "didn't have a shop vac" and "doesn't normally clean up building materials". The additional money spent on insulation labor and materials was used on; narrow stick-on weather stripping that was falling down due to half the adhesive part left to open air, which then stuck to the back of the door, causing it to pull and fall when opened; and Styrofoam board, screwed into the back of the door, partly held on with a busted part of a ruler, and not secured at all on one side. I was told this was "quality work" and that he had technically used what we had agreed on. The front trim/door is marked up and, the trim which he reused from the previous door is too short on one side. Instead of informing me, and agreeing to replace the trim, he re-installed it and said "nothing I can do about that". Additionally, the front latch does not line up and cannot be closed properly. When I expressed my displeasure, and pointed out various items, I was told I technically got what we "agreed" upon. I went ahead and paid the full amount to end the interaction as it was evening already. The next morning, I notified him that I was still displeased and, that the door is not able to function as a proper door, nor is the price for the additional insulating materials and poor labor he used justifiable. He then told me I had flown into a "rage" after asking for a small discount ($40-$50) so I could get necessary repairs. He refused. Really disappointed. I was hoping to find a long-term handy man but all the great reviews really let me down. I guess this is NOT his "type" of work. Buyer Beware. read more

I asked Jay to do a plumbing job and an electrical job. To his credit, he determined that the plumbing job was out of his skill set due to the kind of old pipe involved. I appreciated his integrity on that matter as we all know plumbing problems can escalate quickly if not done right. He did the electrical job perfectly and in good time. we now have a perfectly-functioning security light on the house. I would recommend Jay for any small job you may have. My dad needed grab bars, a shower seat and an exhaust vent installed at his home. I called Home Depot to get a referral for a contractor. Jay with Small Jobs contacted my dad right away. I took it from there. I scheduled Jay to install the grab bars first. He installed them perfectly (I should mention that a different contractor refused the job because he was nervous about cracking the tile). The second job was the exhaust fan for my dad's stove. After Jay crawled into the attic he determined that the exhaust fan had been installed correctly and didn't need to be replaced or repaired. The third and final job was the assembly and installation of the shower seat. Again, Jay installed it perfectly. I will call Jay whenever my dad needs any work done at his home. read more

Don't do it! Stay far away! This guy tried to rip me off. I requested two pieces of trim be replaced with PVC instead of wood over my window... and he responded with a $645 quote for two peace's of PVC installed! To top it all off... after my rebuttal on the price he responded by ending the text with... WORD and a white power emoji! read more

I have used the services of Jay- Small Jobs in two occasions and both times were fantastic. I have on the go lifestyle which does not include DIY and finding someone I trust has always been a challenge. Communication - I met Jay first through Thumbtack and from all the offers I received he was the one person who tried to understand what I need without giving me the let me come then I will tell you. I sent him pictures when I could not explain well and he was and is attentive and prompt. Service- he came on time fixed my issues. First time, it was easier than he thought and second time more complex but he resolved both for me. And, didn't leave a mess. Price- Service and communication are not the only reason why I gave him a call back it was also his reasonable price. He will give a fair estimate and will take from there. I purchased a shade for my screen porch and it was customized to fit. I needed someone to install it and contacted Jay Mabrey to do this, since he had glowing online reviews. He came prepared to hang a custom shade and found in short order that the shade was too wide for the screened area. I was crushed because I paid a lot for this and waited 2 months for its delivery. Jay didn't give up. He found a creative solution and methodically assembled and installed the shade so that it looked great and operated without obstacles.
