I got to try Smallgoods last week, and it was fantastic. Parking was scarce, but we parked down the street and walked over. We were greeted by a friendly staff member. It was our first stop on a mystery picnic experience. We had our to go order waiting for us, it was a fantastic Charcuterie board. It had cheeses, meats, fruits, and it was delicious. Smallgoods Cheese Shop in La Jolla is like their name says is a small shop that offers mostly American selections of cheese. There's limited seating inside and outside. I would consider sitting outside, as the vibe inside the shop was a tad negative coming from the older female staffer/owner. Salads, charcuterie plates and sandwiches are their specialty. Their signature sandwich is the smoked turkey and cheese is the most popular and that's what I've tried, along with chips. The sandwich was good but disappointing, because content wise very skimpy as it needed more turkey and cheese therefore not worth it. I had to stack the half sandwiches for pictures to make them appealing. The older female staffer, who appear to perhaps be the owner was rather unpleasant, not nice...I think she may have prepared my sandwich because the sandwich was skimpy and not as splendid I imagined a sandwich would be from this shop not far from my place in La Jolla. There's a wall with all the awards this shop received and with the looks of all those awards, one would think the service would be outstanding from the owners but that was NOT the case, sadly. First time here, got lucky with parking and came in when it wasn't busy. I've had this place bookmarked on my Yelp, and finally got a chance to try it since I was around the area. Inside has a good amount of space but not enough seating for big groups. Anyway, things can be ordered for take out and be taken out to the beach nearby. Everything on their menu sounded so delicious, but I definitely wanted something hot. So I got the Sobrasada Sando with the nugget ham and iced latte for dine in since they had a few available seatings inside and outside. With this sandwich you can choose one of the proteins listed. I loved how all the flavors of this sandwich just paired so well. From the sweetness of the hot honey, the nugget ham has a little bit of juicy fat but the flavors on that has a slight sweetness too, and the mustard that they put on it balances out the sweetness. Also love the little cheese and pickled cornichons on the side. To me the cornichons also help balance out the palette with the little sourness. I see why they're one of the top rated sandwich spots in San Diego. I'll definitely be coming by again but I'll do a phone order instead because they mentioned how they can sometimes sell out... especially on weekends. And more than likely I'll be ordering two different sandwiches. Felt like one wasn't enough. Also, customer service was great especially with assisting on what's popular on their menu. We got there 30 mins before closing so there was no line, the service was really quick they had some leftover (still fresh) sandwiches. The actual ambiance of the place gives like mom and pop energy it isn't meant for sandwiches but my friend told me this is one of the best sandwiches he had. I got the California cheese and turkey and I got a lot of turkey and all the ingredients look super fresh. Normally I don't love mustard but I think it mixes in well, and the cucumbers and sprouts were great crunch. I really like how the bread has grains in it as well! My husband and I tried a mystery picnic that is set up in LA jolla. As part of this experience you complete clues that will take you to local restaurants to pick up items to your picnic! Small Goods was one of the places on our stop. And I'm so glad we got to try this place, they gave us a variety of cheeses that we took around the corner and ate by the beach. Didn't get to stop in, but I placed an order from Smallgoods for a picnic as part of our bachelorette weekend! Their prices are on a per person basis. If you're looking for just cheese, it's ~$12 pp. If you want meat included, it's an additional $4pp. We had other picnic foods on the menu, so we only ordered enough cheese for about half the party and it was more than enough. Don't forget to ask for honey and mustard if you like those accompaniments so they can include it with your order. They were getting a delivery of fresh bread that day, so we added a baguette as well. The platter was beautifully arranged with a sprinkle of dried flowers and ready well before our designated pick-up time. I only wish I'd opted for more soft cheeses. My partner really enjoys their Sampler sandwich which you can get on a baguette as well. The charcuterie boards, beach boxes, and platters are always so well thought out and carefully crafted. You can definitely see the effort that is put into making them. The owners Mike and Jenny are always so warm and friendly.
