Safe to leave your rental, took the ferry to Vieques island and the parking is ideal. They even shuttle you to the ferry which is next door.

If you are planning to visit Culebra or Vieques, you can leave your car here. They offer a free shuttle to the ferry station because it's a long walk. Don't try it! read more

A lot of people complain about the ferry itself... I have no gripes with the actual ferry as it is…read moredirt cheap and no frills. The parking lot, however, is one of the worst experiences in Puerto Rico, and it alone makes me never want to take the ferry again. It took, no exaggeration, an hour to pay to leave the parking lot as you get eaten alive by insects (you have to stand on line to pay, and then get in your car and wait in a line of cars to leave). There is one single machine that the 300+ passengers of the ferry have to all line up to use. The parking only cost $5 for the day, but I would have gladly paid $50 for the privilege of skipping the line. Then after you finally get to pay, you wait another 15 minutes in a line of cars to leave the lot. In summary: Worst. Parking Lot. Ever. Avoid it at all costs. Here's a video review I did about Cuelbra, Puerto Rico , though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijCNgS2ARyY

It took about 40 minutes to wind through a few streets of the city and when we got here, they were not letting people in saying it was full, but we could see that there were plenty of open spots. What a waste of time! We ended up parking a bit out of town for free and walking in. Yes, this lot is cheap and big, but it just didn't work out for us and it would have been nice to know why they weren't letting people in and or not wait 40 minutes to get there. My tip for parking when visiting Old San Juan is to park early in your journey into the city and walk. Don't drive through the whole thing at a snail's pace just to be turned away at the parking lot with lots of open spaces.

Our walking tour started from Blackbeard's Castle. Fortunately, it is much easier walking down than up. They've added more sturdy hand rails which makes it so much safer. It had been closed for a while due to ongoing structural repairs. The Danes constructed it some time in the 1700s. The steps were needed to get from the harbor to the higher parts of Government Hill. The bricks come from the ballast used to balance the weight of cargo in the hull of merchant ships. Many Caribbean structures and even some cities on the US coastal mainland were built with these yellow bricks. They did a good job restoring it while keeping its historical look. It's a cool local experience that shouldn't be missed. A highly recognized landmark in Charlotte Amalie.

There are occasionally some homeless people milling about the pedestrian walkways but they are not aggressive, just looking for some change.

The owner wanted to get a slip for a day to fix damage the boat had incurred from a storm we went through. We motored into Puerto Del Rey on December 20, 2025 and stopped at the fuel dock to request a boat slip. We were confident we would get one since there were many open slips we saw while motoring into the marina. After about an hour, the office replied back that there were no available slips and we would have to leave. This is where things went "off the rails." My job as crew was finished, and I had to catch a plane. I got off the boat, but I was told I would have to pay. Pay for what? The boat owner who sat taking up space at the gas dock didn't even have to pay for that time. All I was going to do was walk up to the street and get an Uber to the airport. Nope. The marina sent someone to escort me to the office. As much as I protested, they refused to let me go. I was being held against my will until I paid $139.37. There were no products I purchased and there were no services rendered to me. They wanted me to get in a golf cart for a ride to the office and I even refused that. This marina is excessively expensive. Anyone who stays there knows this. I actually had been there twice before and found their boat slips expensive; although boat owners paid the fee - not me. However, what they did goes beyond "expensive." I bought nothing and received no services. I didn't even use their restroom, but they charged me $139.37 to walk under my own power to the street. Go here at your own peril.
