We first started going to Smile Dental because it's the closest to home. It was never that good, but it's gotten worse and worse. What you need to know: 1. Dr. Um is a nice person. But she has arthritis in her hands, her hands get sore from performing dental work, and she sometimes has to cancel appointments because of this soreness. She told me this herself when she cancelled the appointment right after mine because of hand soreness. Your luck is better if you book a morning appointment, before her hands get sore. 2. The employees are always quitting, and the best ones exit the fastest! Every time you come, there's a new dental hygienist. If you like the teeth cleaning you get here, be sure that hygienist will be long gone the next time you arrive. I've never seen so much turnover. Plus, it's always a bait-and-switch game at this office. They promise you a certain hygienist, but when you show up, it's always someone else. No call, no warning. Once I called them on it. The front desk person had scheduled me with one person to clean my teeth, but then gave me another when I arrived. In front of Dr. Um, she lied and said she'd never promised anyone in particular. People here are dishonest, unfortunately. 3. The office is poorly run and no one is tracking anything. The "office manager" tried to charge me for fluoride even though my insurance pays for it. They have wrongly filed insurance claims on multiple occasions. Once we waited months for them to get prior authorization for a procedure. When I asked about it, the response was, "I filed it. That's all I can do." Not their problem! No one here is accountable. 4. Once I was in the office when a product manager from an outside firm dropped by. I overheard his conversation with Dr. Um. He began by reminding her he'd recently taken everyone at Smile Dental out for lunch to a nice restaurant. That's a bad sign, folks. What you want is an independent office, not one accepting handouts from corporations in exchange for pushing their products. read more

I took my son in for a 3pm appointment on December 20th 2018. We called the dentist to set up a tooth extraction because his baby tooth had cracked and needed to be pulled out. We had a $50 deductible and a 20% charge equaling to $62. However Smile Dental chose to add on an exam even though we specifically explain what the problem was. ( condescendingly I was questioned as to whether I was a doctor and why I would bother self-evaluating when by the way the person doing the quote-unquote exam just took me at my word anyway!) Always happens at Smile Dental and as I witnessed multiple times while sitting in the waiting room for 50 minutes, they situate the patient to a point where you don't want to say no then come out with a form to upcharge the customer and shake them down for extra money. Similar to what I see mobsters in New York. I willfully admit that I lost my temper by the end of this interaction! At first I was cordial and I simply asked why we were being charged $103. I did not find it fair considering the total cost was 161 and I have quality dental insurance. I asked to call the insurance company in conjunction with Smile Dental to try to find out the reasoning. The office manager who is extremely rude told me I could do that if I wanted to but they were going to ask me to leave because it was four and they had things to do. Keep in mind I had things to do and they kept me waiting for an hour yet they are not willing to stay a little longer to help me but I'm supposed to wait for an hour for them. Which one of us is the customer again??? So they basically told me that their time is more valuable than mine. Being that the office manager was being combative and was on a major Power Trip and had a superiority complex I've never seen in any doctors office ever, I asked to speak to the owner. The office manager refused and told me she gets paid to deal with me, and she's all I'm going to get. So I told her I'm not leaving until I speak to the owner. At that point she stated that she didn't want to serve me or my son anyway stormed into the room where my son was laying down told him he needed to get up because they were leaving. So Smile Dental punished me because I am poor and don't have a surprise 41 dollars to spend. Only 62... So an honest and ethical company would have notified me of the cost as soon as I walked in the door to allow me to make a good decision for my family. Instead what the Shakedown company does is make me wait for an hour then bring my son in then get him situated and have him laying down seconds away from being taken care of then they throw the bill in your face to try to get you to pay an unfair amount because you've already waited too long to say no. I am going to stand outside this facility with a sign stating that Smile Dental punished me for being poor and refused to let me talk to the owner and I will do everything in my power to legally disrupt this business until the owner Rhina Um explains why she hires such Shady people and allows office managers to behave in such an unethical rude better than you type of way! My time is not more valuable than yours but it is equally valuable and my money is equally valuable and me as a person and my child and my family are equally valuable to your children. My wife and son and I will never return to this business again and I will do everything in my power to share this story over and over and over again on every single social media platform until the owner takes the time to reach out to me and have a dialogue about what happened! Thank you for forcing my son to have another sleepless night because I don't have $41 surprise money to pay for Smile Dental / Mobsters in white coats!! read more

Smile dental is a rip off and they don't care about patients at all. Its basically a cattle car style dental office. I guess if I had to go to a dentist because it was the only dentist left on the planet and I was required by law to go there I would have to go back but I was not pleased with my dental visits there at all. I first went there because I got a coupon or some sort of savings deal, which was ok because I needed a cleaning. The dentist I ended up seeing the first time or two was good. Stephanie Dexter, this is in no way centered around her. But shortly after I had a crown done here, and a dental treatment plan, I had returned to get some work done following my first 2 visits after I got the crown, and I was told that the Dentist I saw, had left them and that they had to redo my treatment plan. Now I know I don't have the best teeth around, but they are not that bad, but according to the owner/asian dentist lady that I saw on my return visit, I had about 8k dollars worth of detal work needed, I was apauled and in disbelief, so got my cleaning done which was not that great, the hygenist was a joke, she didn't even really clean anything, it was probably the weakest cleaning I ever got. So anyways I went to another 2 dentists for second opinions and they were blown away by the amount of nonsense on the redone dental plan I recieved there. The extent was I needed a root canal and 2 crowns and a filling, not 8k worth of work. They are ripoff artists, actually I can't even say they are artists but they probably regularly get by doing routine fillings and un needed work on unsuspecting patients and they probably mess up perfectly good teeth just to make a buck, they also move patients through like cattle. Its horrible and I will protest to anyone that will read this review. If you need a good dentist head to my new dentist Dr. Mattingly hes down the road in Winter Park and hes been in the same location for 30 yrs. :-) read more

I came here for a few years until I moved farther away. I had general check-ups and cleaning, routine exams, x-rays, etc. Had my sealants removed and redone. It always seems clean and everyone who works there is nice enough. The dentist used an interesting technique (vibrating my jaw with his thumb) when numbing my mouth so that I wouldn't feel uncomfortable or pain. Really, nothing negative to report. read more

This is my new dentist. I've been twice in the past month and couldn't be happier. I have never had to sit in the waiting room for more than 10 minutes, even when the first visit was an emergency visit. The dental techs and Dr Um have all been super nice and caring. I used to take my kids to this place until the scheduler scheduled them a few days shy of 6 months which I did not realize resulting in insurance refusing to pay for cleaning. The office did not apologize. They lied instead. They used to have 2 hygienists, one was ok, the other too rough and not very friendly. Both kids complained about the painful experience and not liking the person. Dr. Um was great though. They said they are down staff and until they have more, they can not schedule us. They still have a crown to fix, that I have already paid for. Very nice office with great dentists and staff. I am a patient of Dr. Dexter and she is very nice, informative, and knows what she is doing. Her hygentists are great as well! The office always calls a day or two prior to remind me of the appointment as well as verifies the insurance is still valid and willing to pay the upcoming claims. Smile Dental makes me and my wallet smile!! -- I've been here quite a few times and I am always able to get an appointment at the time that is most convenient for me. All of the staff from the front desk to the doctors chair are super nice. The hygienist was attentive to my needs and relayed my concerns and reasons for that days visit to the doctor. I was in and out, including sign-in, digital x-rays and restoration, in one hour. I was almost sad to go because I didn't get to finish watching the movie that was playing on my in office TV. Dr. Um is charging patients a $20 Covid-19 fee for "PPE". Basically the Dr. is making her patients cover the cost she spent for her office supplies for her staff to have Covid-19 PPE. Such as face plastic guards, gowns, masks, and special UV lights that the office installed to kill germs. For a Dr. to turn around and charge the patients for PPE that she should have in the office anyways is just wrong! Or to cover your your loss during the time all business were closed. Dental insurances or any health insurance for that matter is not covering this fee because it is what they should have in the office to be able be open and do business. They will not see a patient if they do not pay the fee. During a pandemic this is not right. Every patient every time they come in for an appt has to pay the fee. They claim all Dr. offices are doing it, but I checked and no one is charging a COVID-19 fee. Even if your cleaning is covered 100% you still pay the fee. This is price gauging during a pandemic. When confirming appointments they do not mention the extra fee until the day you come to your appointment. read more

I did not have a pleasant experience here. The hygienist seemed completely unconcerned with cleaning my teeth. I'm pretty certain that she even missed some teeth. And they didn't ask if I wanted a flouride treatment. She just stuck it in my mouth and only informed me afterwards that it's not covered by insurance for adults. I went in for a cleaning and the asian lady who cleaned my teeth did a terrible job. I think her name was Chu. She was nice but she barely scraped for plaque and she skipped over some teeth as well when she was cleaning. She wasn't even trying like she didn't care at all. I felt like she was trying to rush me out of there. She also did a fluoride treatment and she only left it on my teeth for 20 seconds when you're supposed to leave it on for at least a full minute. Afterwards, my teeth still felt dirty and I still had plaque in between and on my teeth. I do not recommend going here at all for a cleaning and I will never go here again. I would rather go to CVS and get one of those DIY dental kits than ever go there again. I would probably do a better job too. Waste of time and money. Awful. read more

I have been to this practice twice now, once by myself and once with my teen daughter, and both experiences were very good. Every staff member, from the reception desk to checkout, was friendly and professional. The cleanings we received were the best we've ever had. The only negative I have to say is there is limited parking for the number of offices there. The first time I went I had to park on the other side of Panera, which is next door. I have had the absolute worst experience at this office. Needed work done on my teeth, 9 cavities and 2 crowns needed because of chemotherapy treatment. From October 2016 to April 2017, I've had a chipped tooth after a procedure, they struck me in my gums where they didn't numb and scolded me as if I were child for flinching and it left my gum black where they stabbed it. That same appointment they were adamant about me listening to music during a 30 minute procedure and I refused many times and didn't care to listen to music but they kept insisting so much, they went out of room for a while just to find me headphones in the office to wear during the procedure, felt completely uneasy about it and put the head phones in with the music on pause, I did not trust them at all. After putting a temporary crown on, it caused me severe pain, I called 3 weeks later complaining about the pain and they said it was normal, I came in so they can put my porcelain crown on it and the assistant tried to take it off with no medication and just pliers and it was so painful just by them tugging at my tooth she had to get the dentist and she admitted they caused nerve damage to my gums that cannot be reversed because the crown cap was so high and they couldn't work on me until I take medicine for a week, I said screw that and found University Dental Group 2 minutes away and they are phenomenal! But my new dentist took a look at my teeth and the orders on the insurance Smile Dental had billed me for is not what she saw they had done to my teeth. So they're billing my insurance for procedures and doing a different procedure. Bottom line, this place is an unprofessional scam. Don't even bother, from the front desk, to the assistants to the check out desk, they're all inhospitable and unwelcoming and unpleasant. I've had 5 or 6 appointments with them since October and they've all gone wrong. But I highly highly recommend Melissa at University Dental Group :) read more

I have been going to this office, seeing Dr. Um, for a few years now. I went there at the recommendation of a coworker after seeing 3 other dentists in the Orlando/Oviedo area. I told Dr. Um at my first visit that I am terrified of dentists, and she was very understanding. She is GREAT!! She is very professional, but also calming to those of us (of which there are many) who are afraid of the dentist's office. She has never tried to overcharge me or try to get me to have unnecessary procedures like other dentists.
