While I understand preventive care can include recommendations, the level of suggested add-ons felt unnecessary given we have had routine dental care every six months since childhood. We were also told an extensive panel of X-rays would be covered by insurance. However, we later received notice that insurance is denying those charges, and we do not believe we should be responsible for costs we were told were covered. Additionally, one family member was told they may need orthodontic work, despite having no prior indication of this from our long-term dentist. Overall, this experience felt misaligned with our expectations for straightforward, insurance-based dental care. We will not be returning.

I got a Groupon for a cheap cleaning, exam, and x-rays at another office so I went for it. I feel like I take good care of my teeth and haven't had any problems, so I figured $79 was good enough for me. Big mistake! According to the dentist in the 2 minutes he spent with me, I had a tooth with a big cavity (GASP!) and it needed a root canal and crown. I've never had a cavity and now I need a root canal? I asked if that was the only option and he said "absolutely." Then he said to schedule it with the front desk and walked out. I'm not going to spend too much time writing a review about another office, but basically, I felt like I was just a number. And they wouldn't even clean my teeth that day! I figured I needed to find an office that was a more comfortable fit so I put off the treatment and started looking around again. Fortunately, I work with someone who has been going to Dr. Jim Atchison for a long time and loves it. She told me that he's conservative with treatment, is pretty much pain-free, and does great work. It was pretty close to our home, so I called and booked an appointment. I'm SOOOO glad I did! The office is super nice, has relaxing jazz music, and you have the option of watching TV while in the dental chair. Angie was my hygienist and she was a lot of fun to talk to (and of course did a really good cleaning). I briefly met Dr. Jim before my cleaning (he's really nice), but his son Dr. Craig did my exam. I told about my experience with the other office and he asked if the tooth with the cavity had been bothering me (it hadn't). When he looked at the x-rays he agreed that the tooth had a large cavity but preferred to take a conservative approach and see how things went with just a filling first. He did a great job of explaining things to me and wasn't in a rush to get on to the next patient. I was so relieved! Since this was my first filling, I was a little nervous, but Dr. Craig's shot to numb the tooth was completely painless and the rest of the procedure was a breeze. The best part is, the tooth has given me no problems since! If it eventually needs that root canal, I'll understand, but I'm REALLY glad that Dr. Craig started with the conservative option, not just the expensive one. I like the friendly, family atmosphere at the office and have already booked appointments for my husband and daughter. My first appointment with Des Peres Smiles was phenomenal. I have driven by this office coming home from work and didn't think much of it, but it's actually a great office and very close to my house. The staff were great -- from the receptionist Shannon to the tech Allison and finally, the dentist Dr. Nicole Niewdach. I went back once or twice a week for months trying to get them adjusted and to fit properly. Eventually, I gave up. I have now had to pay out of pocket to have a second set of dentures made somewhere else. I went to the St. Louis Dental and Educational Oral Health Center on Park Avenue, and the lead dentists there couldn't believe how poorly my original dentures had been made to fit my mouth. They are now helping me try to correct the situation. There was also a problem with the price I was quoted for my lower dentures. The amount somehow ended up being nearly double what I was originally quoted, without that increase being clearly explained to me. If you decide to use Big Ben Dental, I strongly recommend getting exactly what you are paying for and the total cost in writing beforehand. I do want to mention that the dental hygienist at Big Ben Dental was wonderful. She tried very hard to help me and worked with me repeatedly to get the dentures to fit. Unfortunately, I have now been almost a year without teeth. This entire experience has been extremely frustrating, expensive, and upsetting. I truly wish I had never walked through the door.

BEWARE of Insurance Charges, I only gave this one star because the staff was so nice and…read moreaccommodating. I had 2 insurances and one of the insurances was going to end at the end of November. I had one root canal that needed to be redone and I wanted to make sure that I completed this before one of the insurances canceled. They should have been able to submit to both insurances and my payment would have been minimal. I had another root canal that also had to be redone right after this one and I knew that I would receive bill for the 2nd one in full. The day I walked out at the end of November, I asked specifically to the Dr. Maher and the receptionist (for billing purposes) that they had completed the first redo of the root canal in it's entirety and they both said YES, then I asked do you need anything more from me and they said NO. A few days into December I came in for the 2nd one to have redone. I received a bill 3 months later stating that nothing had been submitted in November due to the first redo was not done until December. I called them and stated that I asked Dr. Maher personally that he had everything done and needed to finish billing the insurance in November and said that he agreed. The billing person stated that the tooth was not done until December (they can't bill until the tooth is completed). I was devastated after asking personally about this and receiving over a $1000 bill for something that I should have only received about half. I could not believe it! Make sure you get anything in writing from them, as a conversation meant nothing.
