This place is amazing. I followed my stylist Ashley from her last location to Smitten, and I'm very glad I did so. Not only is Ashley a great stylist, but Smitten itself is worth the experience. They bring you a drink while you wait (coffee, cappuccino, even wine); the shampooers do an amazing job and include a head massage (!), and the whole process is very friendly. I also highly recommend Ashley. She's great with my hair (very thick, has an attitude) and helped me transition over to bangs and to red hair from my natural blonde. Wonderful stylist and great to chat with while she's doing your hair :) The salon is a price above Ulta but seems commensurate with other high-end, non-chain salons. My hair is broken and brittle after nearly 400.00 on a hair cut and color ...(ouch) that even included paying an additional 50.00 dollars for a deep conditioning treatment. My first question is why should the conditioning even be needed in the first place if the color is managed and done correctly. I didn't or haven't request anything out of the ordinary. Second, if it is needed why do I have to pay extra? Does anyone think or know or have been told that you MUST Speak up to two weeks after your hair appointment? Does anyone tell you that when you check in and/or did your stylist tell you that? Or did they mention it when you signed your cc receipt for hundreds of dollars. NOPE So good luck when you call after that because the manager stated verbatim "my hands are tied...I do not have the authority by the owners to do anything outside of the policy"..,which oh btw is the two weeks I mentioned It took me two phone calls to reach the manager because she didn't call back. I then asked her to have the owner call me. That has NOT happened On the flip side I called exactly 30 days after my appt. I was out of town two of those weeks at a training course and called as soon as I got back. The manager didn't care even after I told her I would show her proof, Granted I had no idea about the two weeks What other industry do you know that can ruin something with zero recourse. I have to say that after going to Smitten for the first time today, I am really surprised that it has so many great reviews. Even though I arrived for my appointment a couple minutes early, everyone I encountered at Smitten treated me like I was late and seemed flustered that I was there - even though I got several appointment reminders confirming my appointment day and time. From start to finish, things were off with my haircut. My hair was shampooed mostly with cold water, my stylist raced through my cut, and then she burned my scalp with the blow dryer - I think because she was not paying attention. I tried to be nice about it, but it really hurt! I don't know if Smitten made a mistake when booking my appointment, but it really seemed like she didn't want to be there. While my haircut turned out okay, I was so disappointed by the service. And I didn't appreciate being loudly asked by the receptionist how much I wanted to tip when I went to pay. Smitten is the perfect name for this salon. Same goes for how Smitten clients feel about Melanie and her partners in "hair-perfecting" crime. I've been a client of Melanie's for about five years now, didn't think getting the exact highlights I wanted was possible until her. She's is amazing, definitely a blonde's best friend! Her cuts are great, too; you don't have to worry about getting a big chop when you tell her trim, and she's honest if a cut would look better with some type of alteration. Melanie's even amazing at event hair and makeup--traveled to PA to do my hair for my wedding as no one else would do. Also, Melanie's so fun to talk to, and that's important. She's wicked fast with the foils, but, let's face it; highlighting still takes time. As far as the salon itself goes, it's oh-so chic, and everyone is very friendly. Plus, it's just about a block from the Metro, and there's lots of nearby parking. FINALLY! A stylist that can deliver exactly what I want and even better, knew what I was trying to say when talking about my hair and personality! Jana is amazing! The salon as a whole is just beautiful, vintage glamour. Very warm and inviting. The receptionists were very sweet and friendly, a rarity in salons - especially in a boutique salon and above all, the stylist were all professional and classy. If there is any drama in this place, you can't detect it at all. I've been to so many "high end" salons where the staff is so pretentious, unprofessional and snarky. No thanks. Jana, my stylist, is beyond words. She is super talented and a wonderful perfectionist. She gave a great consultation before we started and took her time to study my hair and face. I brought in two pics, she looked at them and knew right off they wouldn't be good for my face shape. I shared a few more, shorter, edgier photos and she knew that these were more my style and that they would look great on me. I also told her that stylist in the past year have been afraid to color my hair.. meaning when I get highlights, I want a pop and no one would make them pop, they would make them natural like and come up with some excuse as to why. She listened to me and ..wow, it is beautiful... absolutely gorgeous. I felt so comfortable with her that I told her to do what she thought would look good because I knew intrinsically that I could trust her judgment. After looking for another salon and stylist for 2yrs, I've finally found a place I can call home. I honestly cannot say enough about Jana and my experience at Smitten. This salon is amazing!!! When I moved to Arlington, I used Yelp to find a new stylist (after being butchered by this crazy hairdresser-man in Ballston at the recommendation from a friend... ooops). I was wanting to try something new and dye my hair really dark (I'm naturally auburn/red). When I called, I asked them to set me up with anyone who's good at color. The front desk gal recommended Lynsey. OMG SHE HAS BEEN FABULOUS! Not only did she do exactly what I was looking for, but the price was totally reasonable for a cut and color and she recommended some great styling products-- and showed me how to use them :) When I decided to go back to my natural color, she and Melanie worked on my hair to do a soap bath which I was totally nervous would kill my hair; they recommended terribly thirsty conditioner which fixed my hair right up! It looked even better than before I had ever dyed it! Not only has she done an incredible job (even with my "I-want-bangs... I-don't-want-bangs" or "I-hate-having-red-hair... let's-go-red!" requests), but every time I go in it's like I'm hanging out with an old friend. I don't know how she remembers everything she does, but it's like we pick up right where we left off. No matter how stressful my day is going, I leave Smitten feeling beautiful and energized. Close to three months ago I made an appointment with Michael. During the appointment he was extremely professional yet totally able to connect in a funny friendly way. After this visit my father had passed away and in dealing with all the emotions and stress of a loss I needed a fresh cleanse. Well that cleanse was cutting off 5 inches of my hair. For someone who has had long hair their entire life this was huge. Michael made me feel at ease and chopped away. He gave me a phenomenal long bob and colored my hair. Lynsey Parry, a super adorable, super trendy stylist, said we should go two inches shorter than my meekly requested half inch--and then she sliced away, chatting with me as she worked. The cut 12 minutes, the blowout ten, and ta da: My still-long hair had swing, it had verve, and the length was far more flattering! My socks were knocked off! The salon itself is beautiful. My boyfriend received the worst haircut of his life. It was so bad, when he left, the women at the front desk literally laughed, charged him 50 dollars and sent him on his way. He asked for a trim, they shaved the side of his head and left a ton of hair on top. He then went back and tried to get them to fix it, waited half an hour, and was sassed. I have always been skeptical about getting my hair done especially highlights. Since I am a Pinterest fanatic I pinned a lot of pictures of ideas I wanted for my hair. I booked an appointment with Melia. First off, she is super sweet and super friendly! I told her how nervous I was and instead of a salon experience, it was like I was visiting a friend. I showed her what I liked on my Pinterest page and she asked me questions about what do I see when I looked at those pictures. I told her soft and natural. I had harsh blonde highlights that made me looked washed out. Melia gave her professional opinion about what she thought would look best while still giving me that soft natural look. She mixed the color for my hair and wrapped it in saran wrap, strange at first but I trusted her. During the process, Melia and I talked about a lot; family, careers, hobbies etc. which made the time go by quicker. After all was said and done, Melia went above and beyond and curled my hair in a super cute way, gave it volume, and made me feel so beautiful! Let me start by saying that I'm currently a customer of Urban Halo and pay around $300 every 6 weeks to get my hair done. The only reason I'm looking for a change is because my stylist is moving out of the area so I decided to look to other salons. I called the salon and the the receptionist made me feel like I was bothering her. I asked for 3 different appointments and unfortunately they were not available but instead of giving me other options she pretty much told me that it was difficult with the times I was giving her. When I told her that maybe it was best that I looked somewhere else, she said okay. Obviously, they didn't want my business. Anyways, I came out looking like June cleaver from Leave It To Beaver. Was not happy considering I am a hip young mom who wanted an edgey haircut. I thought it was kind of strange that when I showed her the pic of the hair I wanted (which was an undercut hairstyle) she looked at it, then went over to her colleagues,...showed it to her...and then they both came back to my chair and the other stylist was telling my stylist how to cut my hair. I was very confused...especially since the woman cutting my hair was one of the owners. Bizarre! Anyways, I'm sure they are all good but maybe not with Asian hair. Super cute salon. I've been twice. First time was with Melanie for a cut and color. The cut was fine, nothing great. The color was so blah. She darkened my hair as I asked, but the color was like a flat black. Not impressed at all. I decided to go back after I had a super cute shorter cut and color in Portland, OR. Just needed the cut touched up. Decided to try someone else, went with Lynsey. She gave me an 80's inspired undercut to the back of my hair. 3 months later, I still look like a 60 year old with this crappy undercut. Yuk. read more

I went in for a haircut with one of the owners, and left quite disappointed. The best thing about my experience was the staff member who shampooed my hair. She was attentive and applied appropriate pressure on my scalp. She finished everything off by wrapping my head/hair in a warm towel. Heaven! Unfortunately, her great customer service cannot make up for the cut and blow-dry I got from the owner. I left with distinct layers (no blending) and an aching scalp. The stylist blow dried my hair with the most hurtful technique of wrapping my hair in round brushes and then leaving the brushes in my hair as she worked on another section. I think at one point I had three brushes in my hair. While the modern decor and the alacrity of the staff is commendable, it doesn't make up for not delivering on your services. read more

First, I went to Irene. She did a great job on my color, but a so-so job on my cut. The second time was better, but then she moved to Hawaii. I've never had so much trouble with a front desk staff. When I call to schedule an appointment, I don't have your list of services memorized. Apparently, I scheduled the wrong thing on two different occasions, and then I got scolded for not knowing the proper service to request. I much prefer a salon which explains to customers is offered and confirms the appointment. I don't like being told they can't blow dry my hair when it is 30 degrees out because a partial-foils appointment doesn't include that. After Irene left, I went to Alicia. Again, Alicia did a really great job on my color. The cut was comparable to a botched job I had at Bang Salon - at 3 times the cost. I have fine, wavy hair and requested a straight cut with tapered layers - I've never heard this called complicated. The first time, I got an inverted cut with no layers. Thinking it must be because it was the first time we'd worked together, I tried explaining with a lot of details and visuals what I wanted the second time. Instead, I got a hair cut which is uneven and had layers like the Rachel. I went back for a fix and walked away with a Rachel and still uneven. Worse, when I went back for the fix she was hurried and barely listened to me. Considering this salon is more expensive than most in the area, I would expect their staff to know how to cut an even length and even layers. Apparently, this is not to be had. If you want good color, go here. If you want a nice hair cut, don't waste your money. read more

My first cut was great -- Lynsey was attentive, asked great questions, and narrated her blowdry (a first!) so I could understand and replicate her technique. My second visit took place after the salon relocated to Pershing Drive. The facility is very large and attractive, so the business must be doing something right. However, the stylist was 15 minutes late, and then, after I was shampooed, I waited another 15 minutes for her to reappear. This time, the cut was hurried, without the attention to detail of my first experience. The layering in the back was uneven. For more than $70, I expect better service and a better cut. read more

This review has been a long time coming. I decided to give Smitten a try after moving out of DC and getting sick of having to find parking (not to mention stress about how much money was left in the meter!) at my old salon on U St. So first off, the parking here is great! Meters right out front and I believe there may be a garage around as well. The front desk girls are fine. They do their jobs and are friendly but if you're looking to get fawned over like God's gift to Arlington, you should probably check yourself. It's irritating to read negative comments when people are simply doing their jobs. Anyway I keep my cuts simple but I like a good highlight on my long light brown hair and I'm pretty picky about the shade. My last color job at my previous salon messed up my hair (another reason I left) so not only would my new stylist have to update my highlights, they'd also have to fix a few things! I ended up in the very capable hands of Ashley. She talked me through my desired look and we even looked through magazines together. She brought over another stylist for some added input - very cool! I definitely did not take this as a sign that she didn't know what she was doing but rather that she wanted to get it perfect - not just good. And perfect it was! Gorgeous highlights and she somehow managed to get rid of the mess the other place made! If you're thinking about trying this place, go for it! I really wanted to love this place. The price is right and the staff very friendly however, I just got one of the worst full highlights my hair has ever seen. This was my second time at this salon and I probably should have waited longer and really trusted the place before going back to dark hair. I literally have to have my hair fixed as I have a tiny streak of bronze hair in the front/top of my hair, besides the fact that my color is not what i was looking for (its fine) The brassy streak is just awful! I had a pretty terrible experience at this salon. I went in for a consult to talk about dying my hair red. I've been doing it myself for a while and thought I should try a "professional". BIG MISTAKE. I also let them know that I was getting married 3 weeks from the time of the appointment. I went with one of the co-owners, figuring she would do a great job. She professed to being able to do exactly the red I wanted with "no problem." I even brought in a picture to show her the exact color. Couple things went wrong during the actual color appointment. While she was nearly done with the color (after spending 10 minutes or so consulting with another colorist about what color to use) she was pulled into the staff room by an employee and i was left sitting in the chair while she went back to discuss something. That was quite rude, IMHO. When they finally washed my hair, I could tell that the color was way darker than what I had asked for yet she insisted it was just because my hair was wet. She blew dry my hair and it looked OK but i was still concerned that it was too dark and she said "don't worry--it'll be great after a few washes. So...flash forward to now 10 days after the appointment and several shampoos later, and a week before the wedding. There are some HUGE issues with the color. First of all, there are patches of "missed" spots of formerly gray hair, and the color is a terrible mousy brownish red. I had called about 4 days after the appointment to tell them I needed the stylist to cover the gray that she missed and I was put on hold three times while they tried to fit me in. I was basically told at that point that they were too busy to squeeze me in except during the weekdays (I work!). Overall, the receptionist was not accommodating at all and neither was the co-owner. It's the first rule of the service business--when you screw something up, you should bend over backwards to fix it. I finally gave up and have not been back. LONG story short, avoid this place. They promise they know "exactly" how to do something and then don't delivery. The attitude is arrogant and they are clearly not as experienced as they claim to be. read more

I had the greatest experience at Smitten. Alisha was my stylist and she is hands down the most talented person who has ever done my hair (including stylists on 5th Ave in NYC). She spent time educating me on exactly what was needed to correct the brassy/color blocked condition of my hair and achieve the look I wanted. She made sure I understood every step she took and even brewed me a delicious cup of tea while the color processed. My cut was just as meticulous and came out better than I imagined (which is HARD for curly hair). It's been over 2 months and I'm still getting regular compliments on my hair. I tried this place for the first time because it was near my home and my usual salon in georgetown was hard to get to. I have very thick, coarse Asian hair. I've been told by many stylists that it's easy to cut if you have solid technique but hard to cut because it shows every miscut. I ended up with a really uneven, disjointed, blocky and overall disastrous haircut but I'm adding on a star because the service was good and the stylists were really friendly. They made every attempt to salvage my haircut even though we all knew that the only thing to be done is to let it grow out. I probably won't return because they weren't for me, but I can see how people with different hair may have a better experience. read more

I saw Alisha at Smitten for a honey blonde hue. My hair was dark blonde so I was looking for a lighter blonde shade with the brightness and honey tone like Blake Lively has. Alisha's technique was good but the overall color was not what I wanted at all. I felt like my hair had little to no change in color. I called back the next day to have it fixed and I was able to get in that day. Alisha did my hair again and result was still not what I desired. I always bring in pictures for my stylists to look at so I don't miscommunicate what I want and after two times she was unable to achieve the color I desired. I still think she is a good stylist, just not the right stylist for me. I also got a haircut and I was unsatisfied with the $70 price since it was just a trim and usually when you get your hair cut at salons with a color service they give you a break on the price of the haircut, especially when it is a trim. I was happy with the price of color, It was $130. My sister got her hair done with Lisa, one of the co-owners and I believe she paid $170 for her color. Lisa did a great job on her cut and color which is hard to find in a stylist, usually I find stylists that are strong in either cut or color and she has them both. I would go back to Smitten even though I only gave it a 3 star review this time. I will be seeing Michael or Melanie on my next visit. read more

I have been a client of Melanie's for several years now. Back when she was with that other saloon, my sister was a client of Melanie's. After having lost my hair stylist in North Carolina and given how I had long admired how well she cut and colored my sister's hair I made an appointment ....I've been hooked ever since. Now every three months or so I drive back to Virginia to visit my family and get a haircut with Melanie. What I have long marveled at is how she is able to make my hair flow and hang so perfectly. Not to even imply that I know anything about cutting hair - but when you watch her cut you don't see any specific thing that would stick out in your memory. Like, "ooh... you cut it left to right and it hangs better".... she just quietly works her magic. In the end, my hair is beyond any picture I could have dragged in to show her. It's just the right cut for whatever style I can come up with - up or down -and even on a lazy day when I might just tuck it behind my ear it perfectly frames and compliments my face. Melanie is also a really great resource. She has offered me countless little hair tips like most recently how to blow dry my bangs so I can work around my weird hair line and a quick lesson on how to do a side braid. She's not one to pimp haircare products for the profit either - the products she mentions are truly helpful and you don't feel pressured to buy anything. Plus she doesn't just toss the bottle of product at you and send you on your way - she takes the time to go over where and how much to apply. Really I can't say enough about Melanie. Take the leap.... cheat on your hair stylist (Melanie is very sweet and pretty ---- and with the amazing cut you're going to walk out with no one will blame you)... I love Smitten! I was recommended by my friend Neda, Smitten's coordinator. I booked an appointment for highlights with Ashley and she did a great job! I've now seen Ashley 3 times with another appointment coming up this month. She listens to what I want and we make a plan for how to get there whether it's spotlights, bumping the base, foils or next up... balayage! She's great at what she does and I totally trust her to do a good job. I love the teamwork attitude of the stylists - one night one of the owners and Ashley tag teamed my blow out to get me to my dinner date on time! Smitten is modern and clean and they run a great shop - super organized as far as scheduling and they always offer beverages (wine, coffee, tea, water) which is an excellent touch. They also give you a little massage during the shampoo that my boyfriend (who goes to Michael at Smitten) and I both love! They also have free parking!
