Let it be known I walked into this appointment in a horrible, post-work mood and walked out feeling the best I've felt in MONTHS. David is an absolute gem!! I genuinely cannot recommend him enough. From the moment I walked in, the entire experience was just immaculate vibes. The salon itself is beautiful and welcoming and David immediately made me feel so comfortable and taken care of. He truly knows what he's doing, not only did he listen to exactly what I wanted, but he somehow made it even better than I could have imagined. Tl;dr - stylist ignored what I wanted and gave me a boring cut that I hated, chopping off tons of my length in the process. Had to get it corrected elsewhere. Full version: I had long straight hair past my butt with no volume (figured since I can't get volume I could at least have impressive length) I wanted to get a long shag haircut to see how shorter layers in my hair would react without completely losing my length. Based on positive reviews here I booked Urban Halo. A shag is a complicated cut so I paid more to have an owner do it. Was assigned Andre. I called and asked what kind of prior consultation I would get and was assured he would consult with me to make sure I got what I wanted (I had a lot of questions about what kind of shag to do, whether I should consider a modern perm in lieu of a shag to add wave, etc.) Half an hour before my appointment I see a voice mail asking me to come 15 minutes early. Which irked me a little at the time because they provided so little notice but I didn't clock this as a red flag until after because my appointment was so rushed and this might have been an indicator. I get there. They wash my hair right away and that's fine. I sit in the chair. Andre asks me what I want and I say I want a long shag to create more volume. I ask about doing a perm because I have heard that perms today can provide more natural looking wave then the old 80s perm. He tells me that's called a body wave and "you could do that." And then...nothing. OooooK. I show him my example pictures of these really piecey shags with lots of layers all the way around the head. He goes OK so lots of layering around the face and more volume and he says we need to cut some of my length to get volume and how much am I willing to cut off? I tell him I would like to keep as much length as possible while still getting the cut but if he needs to take some off to get the look then fine. He ends up taking off like 10 inches of hair, bluntly across the bottom. My hair is still long because it was so insanely long before but this was a noticeable amount to take off. He then proceeds to do that thing where they angle the scissors diagonally and cut downwards away from your face to create these super subtle long layers which is a haircut I have gotten 1000 times at Great Clips and is not what I asked for. That is literally it for layering. He does stuff to even out the rest of the cut so it is literally a blunt cut for the entire back of my head and the whole thing was maybe 5 or 10 minutes. He spent more time blow drying than cutting. At the end the whole thing is just a slightly shorter version of what I already had with a few short layers in the front. I felt like I had cocker spaniel ears. I was obviously not thrilled and started messing with it in the mirror. He says how beautiful it looks now and I say well it definitely looks healthier, which was the only nice thing I could say, and then he tells me to think about coming back for the body wave and walks away. This was not an objectively bad haircut, thus the second star, but this was the most simple, boring, basic haircut and if I had wanted what was essentially just a trim to take length off I would have done it myself. Looking thru pics now I realize that all the haircuts here look the same and that is what my hair looked like, too. I felt gaslit. I immediately booked a free zoom consult with another stylist known for giving consultations and second opinions and she agreed this was absolutely not a shag. She told me a lot of stylists in DC don't even know what a shag is or if they do they won't do them because it is a specialized haircut. I am shocked because I am not a hair stylist but I 100% know what a shag haircut is. In retrospect I am guessing Andre didn't know how to do a shag and instead of really talking about that with me he just instead moved forward with the same basic cut he gives everyone. I hated hated hated it. So anyway I booked the other stylist elsewhere and paid twice as much for her to give me a true shag. It was a razor cut. I love it. It was more expensive than Urban Halo but I got exactly what I wanted. I actually have volume! So it WAS achievable - Urban Halo just couldn't bother to try. No body wave necessary (and honestly I would be afraid to go back and get that service from someone who doesn't listen to me). I now feel totally confident going shorter with this same cut next time (though it pissed me off that Andre took so much length off that we could have used as raw material for my correction cut). I wish I had taken a before photo to be able to post a comparison but didn't think to at the time. In conclusion, my cut from Urban Halo is adequate at best - not embarrassingly bad but a basic, cookie cutter cut with no advanced techniques that did not justify the price point. He didn't listen, just did what he wanted and I found this frankly both lazy and arrogant. read more

I had the most phenomenal experience with David coloring my hair!! I absolutely love my hair!! I have never had a stylist take such consideration for my wellbeing. He asked me about all of my goals not only for my hair but also for my budget and maintenance. David was extremely kind and easy to chat with, we had a lot of fun! He is someone who has a positive and loving energy and I really appreciated that throughout my time at the salon. I've seen Nash every time, but I've had the pleasure of interfacing with many of their stylists back when they were assisting him under his mentorship program (Brittany, Andrea, Meghan). He takes hungry, talented, and hardworking stylists under his wing and generously teaches them the skills he's acquired over his career via an apprenticeship, prior to them taking on their own clients and ultimately becoming wildly popular. Don't get me wrong - Nash is always at the wheel of this operation. He will do anything and everything to make sure you leave satisfied, whether you are in his salon chair or a member of his team's. He's colored the extensions for my wedding free of charge. He's squeezed my appointments in like magic when I've had a scheduling nightmare. I've gotten blowouts from Brittany, Andrea, and Meghan for some of the most important (and photographed) days of my life. I have thick, coarse, wavy blonde hair that takes a billion hours to foil, multiple people to blow dry, and I'm VERY particular about how I look to boot; all to say taking on my mane is no easy task. I always look forward to my salon days because I feel like I get to be part of the family for a few hours. Elvira has been my stylist for over ten years and I can truly say there is no one else I would trust with my hair at this point. Rita is my go-to brow lady. She also gives amazing skin care treatments and is a guru with everything skincare. She started offering brow lamination and I had to try it out. From my limited knowledge it basically perms the hairs straight giving you full brows and a lot of control over the shape. It looks so good! I've never had a full brow and it finally looks like I do. I don't have to spend 10 min in the morning doing my brows and they look so clean and polished. Every time I see her I always get compliments on my brows which never happened before. I have been to this salon once before about 1.5 years ago. I thought it was a little overpriced compared to other salons in the area, but I really enjoyed my stylist and my hair at the end. So, I went back here about a month ago. I had a different stylist. I sent pictures of what I wanted done beforehand so I could make sure they could do it. I also spoke with someone at the front desk who was not very pleasant. They told me they could do what I asked for and gave me a rough price estimate. The price was over $300, but I knew I was going for a some what drastic change. I went to the salon. At the end of my appointment, my hair was not really what I asked for. I was trying to make my hair darker, and I seemed even blonder than before. However, I still did like my hair. Now, it has been about 3 weeks, my hair looks just like it did before I went to the salon. I only wash my hair once or twice a week. I only use high end shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. I am just so disappointed I paid so much money for something that looks terrible in less than a month. It basically looks exactly how it did before I went in. When it comes to hair, I don't mind spending the money for a good product that lasts a long time. I just don't get how anyone can find it acceptable to charge over $300 for something that lasts less than 3 weeks...not sure I will ever come back here and hope they work on this. Carlos was awesome!! This was my first time ever having my hair dyed, and he was so intentional about explaining each step of the way. He started off by really listening to what I had in mind, and catered the appointment toward doing just that. I got a balayage and a cut to make some face framing. He talked really casually with me about products I already had or ones I should get, in a way that showed he wasn't just trying to get me to buy the most expensive thing. I would absolutely go back, and recommend both the salon and Carlos specifically to all! Side note: everyone who worked there seemed very friendly and helpful. I gave this salon a shot after traveling to see my out of state hair stylist wasn't feasible due to COVID. I gave the requisite 3-4 days to get used to my new cut/color but I can confidently say I hate both. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because my stylist was absolutely sweet and I'm bummed at how bad my hair looks. We discussed how I wanted to keep my hair long with long layers and I got short short layers and way more length than off than I wanted, my hair doesn't sit right and feels very uneven. I showed multiple pictures of previous balayage that I had with my desired level of blonde and somehow that translated to this muted copper color and the only part I like is the color from my former dye job. Had to give a shout-out to Urban Halo after another great experience today. I brought a bizarre-looking hair disaster to the owner, Nash, and he got it looking better than I ever would have thought possible (I'd lost all my hair from a medical treatment, and growing it back from nothing involved some *very* awkward phases). I went for a trim today, and again he improved the look more than I would have thought possible. I always had my hair long -- I didn't know anything about having shorter hair. I was able to go to Nash and basically just say, "Uh, I want to grow it long again. Please give me a haircut that looks good in the meantime without taking a lot off," and it was fantastic. I'm beyond impressed! I'm new to the area and looking for someone I can see regularly for blonde highlights. After trying a different place I was really disappointed. I made an appointment at Urban Halo. The receptionist called to inform me, about an hour before my scheduled appointment that my stylist had gone home early for the day because he wasn't feeling well. I was disappointed because I had taken off work for my long awaited appointment. The receptionist didn't hesitate to find a solution. She and one of the owners, Nash, told me to go ahead and come in because they could accommodate me. Henry, the other owner, ended up doing my hair, and it's exactly what I wanted, I felt that he listened to what I wanted and he talked me through the process. Everyone was extremely kind and made sure that I was happy with the outcome. For the inconvenience, they gave me a free glaze and conditioning treatment, totally unnecessary but very much appreciated. The ends of my hair continue to break every time I shampoo resulting in significant hair loss. Master stylists are arrogant and don't care to listen to clients requests. Andre is great for blondes. He got my color exactly the way I wanted it. Did not find this place to be any more expensive than the place I went to in McLean for 10+ years. Obviously if you get color, partial highlights, and cut in one sitting that would be pricy. I typically go every 5 weeks and get color. I get color and partial highlights every third time. Trying to grow my hair back out, so only get it cut occasionally, because I use Olaplex at home and that keeps it healthy. Am surprised they don't seem to sell Olaplex here, but the products they use seem fine and smell good. read more

My highlights and color are on par with my experience at a high-end salon in Chicago's Gold Coast called Maxine's. Andre is an expert colorist. He is kind. Listens to your concerns, and wow! He also gives a fantastic roll brush blowout which keeps the hair nice and full (perfect for thinning hair). This is a high end salon so be prepared to spend $$$$. Worth every penny. read more

Take my review against the following background: 1. I walked in without an appointment, and was accommodated 2. I was looking for a basic cut and style I was given a nice cut, though not exactly what I asked for. Upon arrival, the owner basically told me that the cut that I had, and wanted refreshed, wasn't as flattering as what he had in mind. He then proceeded to do what he wanted when I didn't object. When he noticed I was a bit annoyed, he told me the cut he wanted to give me was only a tweak of what I requested and that he felt strongly I would be satisfied. I wasn't totally happy with the cut initially but wasn't dissatisfied either. I paid (steep $75), tipped, and left. As I was walking out, the stylist told me I would love the cut after I had the opportunity to style it myself. Arrogance much? Except he was right. And now I look back on that whole exchange as a cute and awkward interpersonal interaction. The cut is great, but the experience was an odd one. I suspect I'll be back to Halo... I have gone to Urban Halo for about 7 years and Nash feels like family to me now. I started there because I was scared to start balayage as someone who hadn't died her hair in years, but needed to disguise some grays. I walked in, Nash gave me a consult on the spot, I booked and never looked back. I am brunette so my balayage is intended to be a more natural looking blend vs. for ombré style. Nash holds the place to very high standards and also takes care of his people as well as his clients. I have also bought several appliances from Urban and they never steer me wrong (hairdryer, iron, etc.). I recommend them all the time. A good cut and highlight cost a small fortune anywhere around here, so you might as well stick with someone you like as a person and who care intensely about doing a great job for you, every time. read more

THIS PLACE IS PHENOMENAL!!! Clarendon is so lucky to finally have a high-quality salon with such talented, professional hairdressers. Getting my hair cut and colored here for the first time last night was an amazing experience. I had an appointment with Henry and I couldn't believe how spot on he was with coloring (highlights and lowlights), especially since I had tried to highlight my own hair a few days before with a Loreal box kit...bad idea! It looks so natural and he made the cut compliment my face, using layers and texturizing. I was there for about 2 hours and it cost $175. The sense of family there is palpable. I will most definitely go back - you get the feeling you could just let them do whatever they want and it will turn out great (a huge relief when dealing with your hair!) Other bonuses that made meI felt so pampered and cared for there : 1) The receptionist asked me if I wanted anything to drink - I paused and she followed up with, "White or red wine? water? Soda?" White wine please!!! Nash then asked me if I wanted a cheese and cracker plate. (I think this was because the day before was their year anniversary and they had leftovers, but wow - way to feel spoiled!) 2) The shampooist gave me a head massage and the shampoo/conditioner they use smells like fresh apples and wild strawberries - invigorating! The chairs also vibrate while you get your hair shampooed. 3) Upon leaving, they gave me a gift bag with Origins eye lotion, Bed Head hairspray, vanilla lotion, moroccan oi hair serum, and coupons. I work in Ballston and as a frequent in Clarendon, let's say I've passed by Urban Halo over 100 times. After going an "upscale salon" in Tysons Galleria for years and then having to go to a cheaper salon I decided to call Tysons back and find out who all had cut my perfect haircuts from 2005-2009. I went back and nothing was the same. Instead of perfect bobs, my hair was choppy and for a short haircut there was a LOT going on with it. Last week I called Urban Halo and made an appointment with Nash. According to the Yelp reviews, he was exactly what I needed. I went in on Wednesday, I was taken exactly at 5:30 (my appt time) and given an amazing wash by his assistant. Nash is all about building trust which I admire. After my haircut was done he said "go home and style it, etc. if you want more taken off come back". After taking my flat iron to it to see how long it was straightened, I asked him to take another inch+ off. Went back Friday, was taken again on time and my hair now is perfected.
