Smitty's Garage for the win! My Corvette place was jammed up with work, they couldn't squeeze me in before my trip to Carlisle. A few car guys on social media said to try Smitty's garage. I went to garage and spoke with Will. I told him this Corvette is my baby, treat it with love. I was traveling and he said leave it with us, I have a good Chevy mechanic. I came back, the valve cover gaskets were installed and I was road worthy. Mind you, his shop is busy with summer auto problems, I'm thankful he was able to get me zoomin'. The big question is, why do they get 5 stars? When they changed the valve cover gaskets, they took the time to clean off the residue oil that splattered out. It's that attention to detail that gets noticed. I need a steering part, he said he'd order it but haven't heard back. I'm typing this review from the Port Jeff ferry, we're all busy! Luckily I pulled into Smitty's garage and he got his guys to quickly hoist it up,remove it and place in my car trunk to explain To my service shop back home. All done under 15 Min, at no cost. I have been going to Smitty's for a while now. I brought my wife's truck in for a bad smell like some kind of oil smell. was told it was the water pump which would cost $3400 because it is running off the time chain. picked up the car and the next day and I could still smell the same thing and also heard something as I was driving. call them up and they said bring it back. they called the next day and said they don't smell anything, and they looked and drove the car and didn't hear anything. Brought it to a different garage and was told the transfer case was leaking and dripping onto the exhaust and that was the smell and noise I was hearing. had to spend another $1500. I can't prove it, but I really don't think I needed a water pump. The car was never overheating, and the smell didn't smell like antifreeze but because I used these guys in the past, I trusted them. not no more. I will never go back there again. read more

The absolute best mechanic i have ever been to, they are extremely honest and they do extremely neat work. I am a mechanic and barely have time to work on my own vehicles so i only bring them to Smitty's garage. All the work they do is pristine and that is very hard to find these days. These guys were the only ones in the area that volunteered to take on the massive job of working on my northstar engine for my 96' Cadillac. They were extremely thorough and kept me updated throughout the entire process. I'll start off by saying I normally don't leave reviews but this one is warranted. I would ask a lot of questions pretaining to their diagnosis, whats being done during the diagnosis and their fee for it..It was my first expierence with this shop, recieved a recommendation from my cousin. Recently bought a 97 ford explorer sport, in real good condition- some minor repairs went fine with this shop, including a brakeline repair, some baking plate issues but my complaint about a check engine light although heard and acknowledged was not properly diagnosed. I brought the vehicle in 4 seperate occassions for the reoccuring light, rough idle, close stall outs and increased fuel comsumption. At first they claimed it to be a MAF sensor so we replaced the part+obvious labor. With the light still coming on I brought the car to the shop one last time where a technician read the code and proceeded to tell me the numbers dont make sense and its likely a computer issue, cleared the code and told me the truck would be safe to drive cross country- fast forward to today, where I just laid out over $1500 for a manifold intake gasket repair along with L/R valve cover replacements since they were rotted. Less than 24 hrs my truck was diagnosed and the light is off and my truck runs smoothe. Something smittys couldnt do. Needless to say I am very disappointed. read more

Do not go to this garage !!!!! I have just been robbed! My daughter and I very clearly explained that we were not prepared to invest money her 2007 vehicle. We would like the car looked at, but we did not want to necessarily move forward with repairs to a fuel line issue if it was going to be expensive. We called the garage a few times because they never checked back with us. They said that they've already worked on the car for about an hour and they probably had many hours left to simply diagnose the problem. I had them stop immediately! I was confused why they thought that we would spend several hundred dollars just to get an answer on something that we may not fix. Clearly they are crooks. I was charged $158 without a single indication of what is wrong with my car. If it was going to cost a lot of money to diagnose, they should've told me upfront because I wouldn't have left the car there at all. They didn't deserve any money but I did offer to pay half just end this but they refused. My daughter who is quite intelligent in fact, was insulted by this garage. They said, "They can't help it if my daughter is not bright!" They continued to say, "If a special-needs person comes to the garage, it is not up to them to explain the details of what they would do. They would simply charge that special needs person even if there was a lack of understanding. Not my job not my problem." There is so many garages out there. UPDATE 4/2/2015 I brought our old car in there for an alignment. I usually do my own work but they said that they could replace the lower control arm with ball joint for $99 plus labor. This part is $43 on Rock Auto but whatever there is a markup and I know the repair guys make money on parts. It was tempting to have them fix it cause it has been freezing out. When I get called to pick up the car I am told that whoops the part we got did not have the ball joint, and now it is $150. We just did it anyway.... This is a part that is $43 online WITH ball joint. In addition I do not see a control arm for this car without a ball joint sold anywhere. The part manufacturer he stated (Dorman) does not sell a lower control arm without ball joint as per their part catalog. I am not sure why anyone would replace a control arm without doing the ball joint as well, so that is probably why there are not any around like that. Also if it was indeed the case that this happened, why not deduct it from your 3x + markup?! So in the end I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and FWIW it came out great. I am just disappointed by this, and going to be more weary. If I did not have such good experiences with them with car inspections I would think that I got ripped off. In short: Accurate and honest assessment of what is wrong, but dubious extra charge after. Old review I always have this habit of working on my car on Sundays when nothing is open to save me if I have a problem. I enjoy the thrill of this but finally it bit me when I had a wheel bearing that required a press to separate. This is walking distance so I walked up there Monday morning. The owner is a fantastic guy and pressed the bearing out and cut off the part that stuck for $20! I felt bad so I gave him $40. My wife has brought her car up there for inspections and they never tried to rip her off by telling her the muffler bearings need grease or whatnot. She had a bulb out once and they charged only $2 and passed it. St James is a very local place and it is important to give good honest service which this place definitely does or they would not last long. This is a small but honest shop that is highly recommended. read more

I haven't had a car payment since 1973 because of mechanics like Smitty. I have been using him since I moved from Chicago to Long Island. I believe it is better to pay an honest mechanic than a questionably honest bank. Smitty is good, honest, and I have never had a problem with the work he has done in more than 15 years. I leave my car with him and tell him to fix anything he finds that needs fixing. I trust him completely and value his business friendship. read more

I called to get some tires changed and talked to who I think was Smitty and was more then nice to me and gave me a great price to change the tires i thought, I had to cancel and he was again still nice, not rude and short with me, I WILL be going here soon as i get a chance. read more
