This place was excellent! I've lived in Santa Monica for several years and only recently found SJS. I was able to come in immediately and they finished my smog check in under 15 mins! And the price was very reasonable! What added to my appreciation was how they took me before another pushy customer who jumped into one of their open spots after I had been politely waiting to pull in from a curbside spot. The only difficulty is that they are a small garage with no parking lot for waiting. You may have to pull over & park just before entering to secure your place in line (if there is one). If you're doing your part to keep LA smog free (cough, cough), Smogs Just Smogs will deliver on all your emission standards. I've been here twice and both times the service was good: no appointment needed, in an out in under ten minutes, walked with paperwork in hand and was told that an electronic copy was sent to the DMV. Also used the Yelp app for the notorious $10 discount. $55 total. There is a "cheaper" option advertised for $39.75 on Cloverfield, but the fine print adds the state fee (of $8.25) and another $10 for SUVs (which I drive), so it would actually be more expensive to go there, for me personally. But if you drive a sedan, and don't mind giving business to someone who puts hidden fees in the fine print... I suppose you could save a few bucks by going there. Or, you could do the community a favor and support an honest-to-goodness local business like this one. May your choice reflect your hope, and not your fear. No pressure, everything happens for a reason, but sometimes that reason is that you're stupid and you make bad decisions. So choose wisely. read more

I never write reviews but this place deserves one! I just moved to the area from Virginia and came in for a Smog Inspection. I showed up late (15 minutes before close) and then my car battery randomly died right after I pulled into the garage. Tony was incredibly patient and helped to troubleshoot and get my car battery running again, and then he performed the Smog inspection. Tony kept the shop open late just to help me and did not charge extra for having to fix my battery. 10/10 recommend this place, and will never go anywhere else for an inspection. Awesome spot to get your smog check! They are very fast (faster than I expected), a reasonable price, and input your results into the DMV system so that you don't need to carry a paper or otherwise inform the DMV of the results yourself. What more do you need?? Since it's a small place, maneuvering to into a spot might be a little challenging on the busy street, but their guys do a great job at guiding you on the street and it doesn't seem like the line ever gets much longer than 1 car in the waiting position. Horrible horrible service. Considering the other reviews, I'm kind of surprised how rude they were on the phone today. Maybe the person who answered had a bad weekend or they wanted to vent some anger out on a potential customer... Despite the name of their business, I call to verify we weren't going to the wrong type of smog test center. When I asked if they were a smog test only site, they said "yes". When I then asked if they were able to do repairs , they also said "yes". When I asked for clarification, they just hung up on me... For those that aren't familiar, there are "Smog Test Only" and "Smog Test and Repair" sites. Depending what you have on your paperwork from the DMV, you may have to go to one or the other. If you go to one, and were supposed to go to the other, you may end up wasting your time, and possibly the cost of the incorrect test... Apparently this place has enough business that they can blow off some of their customers. Not exactly the smartest way to do business... read more

What? Of course it gets 5 stars -- as far as smog stations go. What else did you expect? I came on a Wednesday morning and it was empty. They -- like most other smog stations -- only service one person at a time, and each smog takes about 20 minutes. The guy -- I think his name was Josh -- was friendly and took good care of my S2000 for the short time he had it. They share the open, two-car wide, one-car long building with an auto shop of some sort, so don't get confused finding the place since there's no direct sign. A small thing that's probably only specific to me -- but he didn't know how to put my car in reverse (it's stick) and forgot to take off the wheel block before driving my car off of the ramp (I actually saw it, said something, and took it out). Like Ross. A stated, there's a small plaza across the street to check out, but I'd recommend looking at the Cigar shop right next door for a little more variety -- if you care enough. Do yourself a favor and print out a coupon at smogtips.com for $20 off of their normal $60 (it states $29.95, but the other fees round it up to $40). read more

Quick and painless - exactly how it should be! I showed up this morning expecting a long wait since 1) this is Santa Monica and 2) everyone and their mom runs their errands on the weekend. So color me surprised when I drove up and I was the only car there. The shop is pretty basic and no-frills (the waiting room is just 4 plastic chairs and some magazines), but the efficiency and price are all that matter. I passed the test and was in and out of there in around 10 minutes, as promised. With the $15 coupon I brought with me, the total was $50, which seems pretty good for the area. Reason for only 4 stars is that they don't provide any additional services, such as oil change, tire pressure, etc. The small things you don't want to take the car into full service for. This is a great place to get your car checked in a matter of minutes. Most people complain about the parking situation and other technicalities but that is just nitpicking considering most places are commercialized, have more smog machines and technicians, and charge probably twice as much as here. Plus they give you a 10 dollar coupon! I don't see why people complain..... Tony is great! I have seen how he keeps his composure with rude and horrid customers who try to bribe him in order to pass their vehicles or simply do not understand how a smog check works. He is a very honest worker and loves what he does. Keep in mind, It's a machine and computer that reads the vehicle vitals, not him. Also there is one of him and one machine; therefore, if it breaks down, don't take it to heart if it takes more time, it is understandable and if you don't like the wait then take your business somewhere else, thanks.
