You know the trucks are delicious, but a sit-down meal in a space for 60 of your closest friends? Niiiiiice. You want delicious BBQ? Go here. Just... go. Burnt ends - uh YES. Brisket? To die for - people fight over this stuff. The Chicken?! Do not pass go - eat it. Yes, there are green things, and they are mighty tasty too. Don't pass them over. Celiac? Gluten free? These folks know their stuff and are happy to feed you. Craving deep fried cauliflower, sweet potato fries? They got that. Gluten free bun? Sure thing. Cider *IS* most definitely on tap... and a good one. Yes, I asked, and YES they brought it in!! Drink up, safely, it's there just for you! They can't keep it fresh if you don't. ;-) I have mentioned that the "Estrella Damm Daura" & Mongozo & other gluten reduced beers aren't recommended for celiacs, of course I suggested 100% gluten free alternatives to bring in - of course there are ones that taste good! I'm not a monster! I never have room for dessert, but you can bet I'll try again. We hired Smokehouse for a scooter rally last summer, and what a super hit. You need catering for a meeting, reunion or any kind of gathering - these folks can set you up with A1 food for a super price. It was extremely reasonable and ready on time when they said it would be for us to pick it up, complete with plates, cutlery and napkins. As with all catering pickups - count your stuff and check that you have everything before you leave. It's tough to find buns in the middle of nowhere if you forgot to grab them in the rush to load up! We will be ordering catering from them again, no hesitation to recommend them! read more

3.5 if I could give it that. Grabbed take out last Friday where they featured a Louisiana style meal. We chose the fried catfish and the chicken and shrimp. Kinda pricy for the amount of meat you received. In general, food was really tasty. Our favourite was for sure the smoked chicken. And I am not even a big meat eater. Very moist and tender meat with really good bbq flavour. I expected more than 4 shrimp for 35.00. It came with fried okra which was really well done and mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese didn't look like much but it was really really delicious. The catfish dinner came with two pieces of deep fried catfish, okra, Lemon herbed potatoes, hush puppies. We Were looking most forward to the catfish and that was the most disappointing. Dry batter and it fell of the fish. The cornmeal did not work for it and it made the fish dry. The potatoes were bland however the hush puppies were the best I have ever tasted outside of Louisiana. For dessert we had the Voodoo White Chocolate bourbon bread pudding and the Mississippi Mud Pie. Both were nice portions and very moist and delicious. If you like meat, I would try it out. Hadn't been here in quite a while, and a friend tipped me off that they had moved to the west end not too far from work, so a customer and I decided to give the new location a try last week. The new spot is a considerable downsize in space but is in a busy area of west Edmontons business park and should do well with the weekday lunch crowd. We got there just before noon and there were still a couple of tables available. Now full disclosure, I have been pretty spoiled when it comes to BBQ... having been to Texas a few times and experiencing world class BBQ in Nashville and St. Louis. Hell, I have a couple of buddies that have invested heavily in smokers that make BBQ better than the average restaurant. And that's what I would rate Smokehouse BBQ as... average. I opted for the 2 meat/ 2 side Big Daddy Combo. I went with pulled chicken, burnt ends, pit beans, and Cajun cauliflower (which I was really excited to try). The pulled chicken had great flavor but was a bit dry. The burnt ends were fattier than I am used to and didn't have the flavor I was expecting. The pit beans were very average... I was expecting a lot more from a BBQ joint. And the Cajun cauliflower was shockingly bland and a bit overcooked. Our cornbread never did come. Upon being served we were told it wasn't quite ready and would be out in a bit, but that never happened. Disappointing for me as I LOVE cornbread... Where Smokehouse BBQ really hits a homerun is their sauces. Both the Mustard BBQ sauce and the Applewood BBQ sauce are amazing. The other two are pretty damn good as well, but the two I listed as favorites are as good as it gets. I had tried Smokehouse before in the old location and their foodtruck and was more impressed. I've had the bacon bomb, ribs and a jalapeno turkey gumbo in the past which I loved. Maybe I hit an off day, but this visit didn't stand up to my past experiences. Food truck at Edmonton Rockfest--staff seemed in a bad mood...likely because no one was lined up for their menu. Ordered the bacon bomb sandwich & fries--sandwich was cold and tasted like something from Arby's. Fries were over cooked and greasy. Paid $16 for food that got thrown away. Thanks to the owner for the message--I'm sure this food truck has its fans, and I understand life interferes with business sometimes. The food truck was at the expo centre for an event and this was by far the best option for lunch. Shared a BBQ beef brisket sandwich and bag of there potato chips with my friend. Overall it was a pretty stellar lunch. The beef was tender and flavourful. I didn't even get any stuck in my teeth which is pretty standard when ever I bite into a bit of beef. To that's a sign of how truely tender it was. The sauce was sweet with a hint of heat but definitely not overpowering the flavour of the beef. The house made chips were something pretty great as well. Definitely less of a French fry and more of a true handmade potato chip. They were sprinkled with a salt spice mix that added a nice flavour but still allowed the taste of the potato to come through. I'm definitely a new fan and will be back to try other menu options. read more

I've tried a few other BBQ places in town, and we keep ending up here. I enjoy their BBQ sauces and their ribs because the texture isn't too soft and has a bit of a bite to it. I do think their "famous" bacon bomb is disappointing since it reminds me of meatloaf with some bacon (where's the bomb??) Of the sides, the potato salad and (surprisingly) the cauliflower beat out bland mac & cheese and ok fries. I also love the free baskets of chicarron they start you off with - I'll take that over bread any day! We typically share the combo with 3 meats, and maybe an extra appetizer if we're hungry. Hm, went to Smokehouse BBQ this past weekend with a huge group of family (think there were over 15 of us) for the first time. Place was pretty busy for a Sunday evening but I was surprised that there was a queue of people waiting near the end of our meal. Didn't know this place is so popular...still unsure why. Anyways, for the food, I'm just going to talk about what our part of the table ordered or else tried from a few others. - Smokehouse Meal for 4 ($85) + 2 extra people ($19/each additional) - you get to choose 4 meats and 2 sides. We went with St. Louis ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork and chicken. For the sides, we had the fries and the baked mac n cheese. Also came with a handful of small corn breads - these were actually pretty good. Nice bit of heat to them. Meat wise, I liked the ribs and chicken (strange how the waitress said we could choose between normal chicken or pulled chicken. We decided to try pulled chicken but it came out as regular...). Didn't try the beef brisket but my mom said it was very dry. Same situation with the pulled pork, dry and not much flavour. You need to use their sauces to fix that. The fries were decent but don't get me started on the mac n' cheese. Probably the WORST mac n cheese I've ever had. You know that nice gooey cheesy warmth you get when you bite into a delicious one? Well, this one wasn't even close to that. There was no flavour, instead it tasted watered down. Bleh. I also had a taste of two other side dishes - baked beans and sweet potato mash. Nothing special but if your going to order two side dishes, I'd go with the sweet potato mash and fries. Anyways, Smokehouse BBQ was pretty disappointing. Second time I have been here. It is about half the size this time. Apparently they shrunk the place down. There will be a new place opening in the other side soon. The service wasn't great, she has only been here a couple days but you could tell pretty green. Only 2 tables on a Wednesday night at 630, so don't think this place is doing too well. I was invited with friends, and they love the BBQ. Ordered the combo. Brisket and ribs with the Cajun potato salad, and mac and cheese. The bbq was pretty good. What a great find, and only a short drive from work to boot!! My work colleague had mentioned she wanted to try this place, so this morning at 11:05 AM I called in our order for pickup at 12:15. I was a little early when I showed up, but food was ready 12:15 on the button. I was back to the office by 12:20! I had an order of the deep fried pickles and the pulled chicken sandwich (with an added slice of cheese) with a side of sweet potato fries and chipotle mayo - absolutely amazing!! The pickles were spiced and nice and crispy, the pulled chicken on the sandwich was flavorful, and the sweet potato fries were delicious!! When the person operating the front (I missed his name!) was putting the bag together, he was inquiring if we have been before and how we heard about them. He then continued to put in samples of each of their BBQ sauces (which are made in house) for us to try!! There were 4 in total, and we loved each one of them. Generally a good meal but not superb. We had pork which was a bit dry, beef which was delicious and fried chicken which was awesome! You get complimentary mini jalapeño corn bread as a starter plus we got a large one with our meal (3 meats with 2 sides) so you don't need to order the corn meal as a side. Mac n cheese was good but overly cheesy in my opinion. Hubby says coleslaw was pretty good. Their sauces were on the sweeter side but went well with the dry pork. When I visited Smokehouse BBQ, I was absolutely starving. The meal I ate did the job. I had the pulled pork poutine and it was quite tasty! The BBQ was tender and moist and they had a variety of BBQ sauces to add to your meal! It was a nice place to try, but I have a soft spot for Memphis Blue's on the south side. If I had a craving for BBQ and was near by I'd visit again, but otherwise this place wasn't MIND BLOWING at all. I'd still recommend giving it a try though! read more

Finally, a real BBQ place in Edmonton! Smokehouse BBQ has only been open for a little while, but it is a great addition to 124 Street. This is definitely no place for vegetarians. Even the corn bread muffins have bacon in them (but they are delicious! And inexpensive; only $0.50 a piece). But if you love meat, especially southern-style BBQ, this is the place for you. They have a variety of sandwiches, like pulled pork, smoked brisket, and the "Burnt Endz" which is BBQ beef with caramelized onions and coleslaw. They've also got all of the usual BBQ foods: pulled pork, smoked brisket, St. Louis ribs, and 1/4 smoked chicken. I haven't yet tried all of the meat on the menu, but I've had a fair sampling and it is all delicious. The sides are decent, but not great. The focus here is definitely on the meat. That's to be expected in a BBQ place, of course, and the sides are still a good compliment to the main course. They could be improved a bit, though. The various starters are also good. My wife and I shared the jalapeno poppers and nearly got divorced trying to decide who would get the last one! (OK, not really, but I wish the order came with 6 instead of 5 because they were so good!) Rather than the usual breaded and fried poppers, these were jalapenos filled with cheese and then wrapped in bacon. I highly recommend them. What puts Smokehouse BBQ over the top for me, and gets them an extra star, is the beer menu. They've only got 4 taps, but all of them are devoted to local beer (three of Alley Kat's regular lineup -- Amber, Charlie Flint, and Full Moon -- and one devoted to a seasonal brew). The bottle selection includes the same options plus Aprikat and a number of mainstream beers like MGD and Coors. The atmosphere is casual -- similar to what you might get at a BBQ roadhouse in the South -- with football on the TV and great blues music in the background. The service was friendly and efficient -- I hope that the current staff sticks around for a long time, because they're some of the friendliest servers I have experienced in Edmonton. We went there on a Thursday night, they had live music which was a very pleasant surprise. The decor looks perfect for a southern BBQ, clean, comfortable and very friendly staff. They have local alley-cat bears on Tap (7$/pint) which is a big positive for me but a little bit pricey. I ordered the grapefruit ale, a perfect summery beer. At the beginning they serve you fresh homemade potato chips, with array of home made BBQ sauces. Excellent snack for your beer. Then we ordered a platter of two meats and two sides to share (20$). We chose beef brisket and pulled pork with sweet potato mash and coleslaw. It also came with a piece of corn bread. The brisket was dry, at best average or below average but when you mixed it with the BBQ sauce it turned okay. However, the pulled pork was excellent. Moist and tasty. The sides were good but nothing special. Beside the dry brisket, I had a very good experience. I will defiantly go back there to try the burger, ribs and chicken wings. I went there on a Sat night with my girlfriend, we waited 30min for a seat which is fine, it was busy. But once we did get seated the waitress never came back to take our order, after 15min with the menus on the edge of the table under our empty glasses about 30min since sitting, I flagged a waitress over and told her we were waiting and hadnt placed our orders she assured us someone would be right over. Then after another 15-20 I watched 2 tables that were seated after us place orders- At this point we decided we were just goin to leave. Most of the staff had very bad attitudes(not with me)just in general and were trashing talking a certain waitress who seemed to be one of the only ones doing a decent job. I came here for the first time on the weekend around 2:00pm for a late lunch with the gals. I guess it was a prime time to go because there were probably about 3 other tables seated. We ordered some cornbread and "pig balls" for appetizers. The pig balls were flippin' delicious. They were sort of like chicken balls but with pork and, how should I say, way-better-ness. Paired with their house BBQ sauce I kinda wished my meal could have been just those! The corn bread was also scrumptious with their bits of bacon and jalapeno inside them. My main course was the Pulled Pork Poutine. I was pretty sure the meal weighed more than I did. The portion size was colossal. (Not bad for $12.95) The pulled pork was moist, flavourful, and tenderlicious. The fries were still golden and crispy. Gravy, cheese curds - all wonderful. Everyone seemed to really enjoy their meals and they were all under $13.00! To top everything off service was good and the environment clean and cheery! read more

Commercial warming drawers range between 100-200 degrees F. They have a digital display, and you can actually set them for a pretty accurate temperature and just leave them there. Water boils at 207 degrees Fahrenheit in Edmonton. This is helpful in some aspects of cooking--making a sauce in Edmonton is a little bit easier than it is on the shore of the Dead Sea, where the boiling point of water is a whopping seven degrees higher. In other aspects it's less helpful: pasta takes longer to cook in a relatively chilly pot of 207-degree boiling water, and meat tends to dry out faster when you cook it. Collagen begins an irreversible hydrolysis at 154 degrees Fahrenheit, making a miracle transformation from that horrible tough stuff that makes up cartilage and tendons to rich, water-soluble gelatin. This means the secret to making good ribs and rib tips in Edmonton is to carefully raise the temperature of the meat to between 154 and 207 degrees and hold it there for a few hours. For exceptionally long cook times it can be advantageous to wrap the meat in foil, or on a restaurant scale a large quantity can be placed it in a warming drawer and held at that heat. This is well above the legally-required 135 degrees. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the reason this place was empty on a Friday at lunchtime is because the ribs are dry and tough and ultimately would have been better if they'd just thrown them into the hot box and forgotten about them. read more

I'm not really a southern BBQ/smokehouse kind of gal, though I love ribs, brisket, and barbequed chicken. There's something about the smoky flavour that I'm not a huge fan of. However my friend had a Groupon and I do like trying out new places, so I tagged along. The space inside is pretty big. It's unpretentious and kid-friendly, though really not vegetarian-friendly. I checked out reviews ahead of time and came to the conclusion that I had to try the bacon bomb sandwich. My friend and I decided to share that as well as a burnt ends sandwich. It took longer that I'd like for the food to get out, but it's more of a function of being there over the lunch hour and needing to be back at the office. You get a rack of sauces and other assorted condiments at the table which was fun. The sandwiches are a decent size and definitely messy to eat. After eating my half of the rib ends sandwich (not bad), and eating about half of the bacon bomb sandwich, I realized that they tasted really similar. Upon closer inspection, there was no bacon at all! They had messed up our order but since we'd already eaten the majority of it, there was nothing that we could really do. I did mention it to someone at the end and he apologized and said he would do something special for us the next time (not sure if he'll remember us though). Plus, I love seeing all these new places open up on 124 St. I went on a Wednesday evening and it was pretty quiet, although our server said it hadn't been that quiet since they opened. They've got a much bigger space than I thought, and it looks like this could be a great place to take a large group. They have a long table set up in one side of the restaurant. They've got a bunch of local beers on tap, which is awesome, and some really interesting sounding other drinks, although I wasn't drinking this time. Our food did take a little while longer than expected, given how busy it was, but it wasn't an unreasonable wait time. We all got ribs and brisket, which comes with bacon jalapeno cornbread and two sides. The mac and cheese was some seriously good comfort food. The meat was tasty and tender, although I found the sauce a bit overpowering. But I still really enjoyed my meal. The atmosphere is fun; the servers all wear shirts with sassy meat-related sayings on the back, and they have a poster up that says "I like pig butts and I cannot lie". When I moved to Edmonton in November 2011, the only establishment (outside of your own backyard) where you could enjoy barbecued and/or meats was at the Bubba's cart in the Superstore parking lot. Two-and-a-half years later, it seems as if a dozen barbecue joints have sprung up, most of which I have yet to try. Based on some of the food I've had from Smokehouse at the Taste of Edmonton and other events around town, I admittedly had high expectations. The "bacon bomb," consisting of italian sausage wrapped in bacon, is consistently delicious. Though I get the sense that Smokehouse BBQ has expanded their repertoire too vastly and too quickly as I was disappointed with my lunch. Smokehouse serves its "Smokehouse St. Louis (Pork) Ribs" without a sauce, which is how they do it in Memphis (or Greece, for that matter), but the Memphis ribs have a dry rub that requires no sauce for additional flavour. These ribs demanded a sauce (as St. Louis Ribs are supposed to), which I then needed to awkwardly squeeze on the ribs. I like my sauce brushed on the meat at some point before it reaches my plate, as there is no utensil on your average table that adequately spreads the sauce. Speaking of sauces, the restaurant places five of them on the table in squeeze bottles. All are tasty. I ordered a platter that contained andouille sausage in addition to the ribs and I was disappointed with them for some reason. They had more of a boiled hot dog sort of texture than barbecued sausage. And the flavor paled in comparison to your typical grilled sausage, not to mention any andouille you'd have in Louisiana. The mashed yams were particularly yummy and were the best part of the meal. Service was much too slow for a weekday lunch as well. read more

Started with a Keith's. Decided on the pulled pork poutine. Oh man is it delicious. Quick service with a smile. Doesn't hurt that she's smokin, herself hehehe. Hit and miss. That's really the only way I can describe this place. The service is incredible, the atmosphere exactly what was expected for a southern-style barbecue place. The food -- well, some good, and some ho-hum. The Fried Pickles are the best we've had this side of the Mason-Dixon line. In fact, they're the best we've had on *either* side of the Mason-Dixon line. The Pork Balls -- last summer were great, and we couldn't get enough. We had them again last month and would easily have been forgotten. The sandwiches -- the only entree to go back for! The bacon bomb sandwich is good. The Bacon Bomb entree is a nice chunk of meat -- but pretty bland without adding sauce. The Ribs -- overdone. They weren't dry ribs, but the meat was very dry. Will we be back? For sure. But we'll be managing expectations accordingly, and probably just stopping in for an appy or snack. read more

The BEST Beef Brisket in Edmonton! I special ordered 13lbs from their catering menu and let me tell you, it was the talk of the town! Juicy morsels of perfectly cooked brisket. Reasonable price and very friendly to deal with. I highly recommend ordering the Beef Brisket and Buns for your next party! Thank you so much!
