We were in downtown Guelph and looking for a late evening snack and in the mood for Poutine so decided to check this place out. We got two poutines - one regular and one with mushrooms and peas. Both did not have as many cheese curds and this was more prominent on the regular poutine, thus that was just ok. the one with the grilled mushrooms also had little cheese curds but the flavor of the mushrooms paired with the gravy and the limited curds was an excellent combination. both portion size was good and the mushroom had great flavor, just don't expect many cheese curds! read more

Good evening head office - Do you know that the Guelph location has bi-monthly raves that blast loud music until 2 in the morning? I'm a neighbor & when it happened the first time during the summer of '24, I respectfully visited them the next day and asked the owner/manager to simply give me some notice so that I could either join in the fun or leave town for the night. After all, who am I to stop a good party. Fast forward. It's now the evening of January 24th and again for the third time, Deep/whomever has not provided me the common curtesy of a heads up phone call in advance. I try and support this franchisee by purchasing one of their poutines every 2 weeks, which imo, is of very poor value. Value is the quality of an item based on the cost. In this case, over priced, pre-packaged, garbage! It's unfortunate that this location does not understand what it means to be a good community neighbor. My questions to you Mr Smolkin, as the franchisor, what is your vetting process? Is there a vetting process or do you just accept anyone with stupid money to hand over ($300k - $500k) to your corperation? And, do you have guidelines as to what a franchisee can do under YOUR banner? Oh wait, here comes the City of Guelph Police, again! read more

Horrible, went for dinner tonight I got the bacon cheeseburger poutine. Fries were cold and stale, gravy was the only thing warm. I didn't even eat half and threw it out. I asked my husband how was his, he said it was kind of warm. He had the chili cheese bacon poutine and now he's horribly sick. Thanks for the food poisoning Smokes. You used to be our favourite place, we'd drive all the way to Toronto. I can't believe how fast you are going downhill in all of your locations, it's so disappointing. read more

As a poutine joint, I've had better. The menu looks pretty big, but when you think about it, it's just adding a topping over fries and cheese curds. I went here 3 times, and every time my cheese curds tasted cold. It's a really good location though, in the center of downtown and they place looks very hip and trendy, but you can get better poutine on the trucks or even at riverside park food hut. The price is also quite much for what you get. It was about $10 for the smallest box. Also, what's the deal with this place not having wifi, but all these ads and chalkboard of people promoting their social media. Even though the food is below average, the place seems like a nice place to chill with friends, but not having wifi is kind of lame. There's an article out there saying Guelph has great poutine, but this isn't the place it seems, even though it's in the heart of downtown. If they served alcohol or had wifi, it would improve the overall experience. read more

I will definitely say I like smokes. They make a decent poutine with lots of different options. Although if you want good poutine in Guelph I would definitely say Pierre's is a better option, better gravy and therefore overall taste. read more

Nasty place! The cashier who made my poutine was sneezing and blowing his nose all over the place, not to mention, not wearing any gloves. The place itself was filthy, tables covered with sauces and dirty napkins lying around. It seems like this place hasn't been cleaned in ages. Only went here because the other poutinerie was closed, never again. *Not the cashier's fault for being sick. Management should have given the person time off work. read more

Triple threat pork was awesome. Poutine with pulled pork, bacon bits, and sausage. and they use real cheese curds which really makes a poutine. Great spot for some lunch or late night food when the bars let out downtown. They are open quite late on the weekends for the bar crowds read more

This past Tuesday night me and some team mates stop in at the Guelph location after playing hockey downtown at the Sleeman Centre. We were looking forward to trying your pountine after hearing about this location was now open. We walked in the door at 10:35 pm on the dot. We all made are way to the counter a young girl that was in the back shouted from the deep fryer (not rudely) "be there in a minute" she made her way around the to the front counter and told us " all I'm serving is "traditional" and I ask way???? And she replied because all the topping have been put away in the cooler and are cold now. And asked her way? What time do you close? She said "nothing" just looked at us like we were the biggest inconvenience. One of my team mates stated "we don't care If the toppings are cold as long as the gravy was hot??" She again said nothing just looked at us. I understand the location closes at 11pm, But it was not even close to 11pm, and the order we would have placed would have been a large order and not small dollars spent. The excuses that the topping were cold now is ridicules!!!! And completely insulting to me and my team mates as customers and people. The topping are keep in or on a cold table all day, because its required in the food service. What the girl should have just said was the truth, go away, I don't care, hurry and leave, I want to leave and go home, I don't care about the chain, the owner, are anybody but me!!! That what she should have said because that's what she meant, and implied. When a customer makes a point of getting a group together, checks online to make sure the location is open, everyone make the trip over to the store and the staff or employee treats the customer in that way is completely unacceptable. There is a second pountine place just up the street and the food is great, and the staff is amazing and yes the price is higher but who cares about a dollar more. The difference in quality of service is massive. Somebody worked hard to start this chain, and I'm sure that are experience would be deemed unacceptable, and I hope that this email stirs up more then a read and a who cares. I like how they offer vegetarian gravy- nice stop for unhealthy cravings. I really like their nacho poutine although the toppings may make some of the fries soggy. However, It's still pretty good! read more

Tasteless gravy, mushy fries and extra toppings that are substandard. I have had two poutines from this place and both were terrible. Never enough gravy, bacon bits were so chewy I had to spit them out and the fries were horrfying. I consider myself somewhat of a poutine connoisseur, and have to say Smokes has a lot of room for improvement. They're better than fast food poutine, but that's the best I can say. I find that their fries tend to fall apart to easily, making a starchy mess in the box. I don't enjoy the flavour of their gravy, and find their menu board to be confusing (last I was there, I couldn't figure out what the price difference was between the sizes). Really poor experience! Started with being over-charged, and then short changed ... followed by having the poutine dumped upside down from one box to another (so all the toppings ended up on the bottom), and when questioning about it, was told "who cares, people mix it up anyway" and then tossed a box on the counter for me to flip it back up myself. After staring at him in disbelief, he seemed quite disgruntled as he dumped it back upright into a new box (3rd box) with toppings such as guacamole being left behind and lost with each transfer. When I told him some people care about presentation and not wanting their toppings on the bottom of the box as opposed to on top of their fries, he simply argued back that "actually, no one cares". Probably the rudest, laziest service I've experienced... and this was while introducing poutine to my Thai fiancee - her first time ever seeing and trying poutine... nice way to ruin a generally enjoyable Canadian experience.
