Once again, when I'm in a small town in rural Mississippi and discover an outstanding place never…read morereviewed on YELP, I feel just like Lewis and Clark exploring undiscovered places. My old AT&T cellphone ceased working when I got there so this may be pushing the limits of cellular service when you are this far back into Mississippi's pine forests. This area has long been the heart of Mississippi's wood products industry and many of the people in that industry that I dealt with over the years were particularly fond of this event. The Neshoba County Fair has been going on since 1889, always the last week in July. Families with roots in this area often plan and take their yearly vacations to move to the fairgrounds and live, party and share family time together. People who move away often come back to visit during this time. Over 600 permanent cabins and 200 RV spaces now form a small city around the fairgrounds for a week each year. Everyone in Mississippi of any age has heard of the Neshoba County Fair at some point or the other. Probably every state wide politician for the last 100 years in Mississippi has spoken at the Neshoba County Fair. The weather is usually very, very hot during the time of the fair in Mississippi and in election years, the hot air is even hotter. I came for my very first time ever to see the harness horse racing. Once a staple at the fair in my hometown of Corinth, I haven't seen live harness races in 60 years. As far as I know, Philadelphia is the only place in the state where harness races are still held. To me, it has always been a very graceful form of horse racing. All the other activities of a county fair are held here as well as nationally known entertainment in the stadium during the evenings. Billed as "Mississippi's Giant Houseparty", the Neshoba County Fair is a unique cultural event in Mississippi, entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. You'll notice most cabins built here have front porches and a popular pastime is "sittin" on the porch watching people go by. If you stop and ask a question, you'll often be invited to sit a spell. If you're not a native, it's a good way to make friends with the locals. If you live in Mississippi, you'll likely meet someone you know or someone who knows someone you know. In Mississippi, six degrees of separation is seldom more than three I've found.
