This tree farm is awesome! Beautiful location and very helpful and happy staff. They provide a saw and rope, but it's highly recommended to bring your own gloves to help protect from the pine needles as well as a tarp to facilitate pulling your tree down the hill. They have Douglas firs and Colorado blue spruces that are clearly very healthy. We picked a nice chubby blue spruce and he's doing quite well at home. Our kitty loves this tree and so do we! If you need any tree accessories (stands, etc) or a beautiful wreath, they have it here! I also saw local cider and honey for sale. As for the stands, you might wince at the sight of the $50 price tag, but I assure you that it's worth it. The flimsy $20 ones at Target or Walmart that tip over are not sturdy enough for trees like the ones here and the reservoirs aren't big enough for the water the tree will need. So, do yourself a favor to avoid the pain and heartache and splurge on a good, sturdy, quality Canadian tree stand that will last for years to come and won't make your house into a disaster because of your tree falling over. The tree farm really knows how to set up a holiday tradition so well. First, every single employee was super friendly and helpful. We were given a map, saw and rope and took off through their well planted field of trees till we found the perfect one. Then came the one challenging part- hauling our freshly cut tree over the staging area. Some families had obviously been here before and brought tarps or wagons- noted for next time! But once we got close to the staging area, one of the employees came rushing over and helped carry the tree with me the erst of the way to their tractor. We then got to ride the tractor up to the main barn, our tree in the front of the loader. They then shook it out and wrapped it up nicely with string, then brought it back down via tractor again to the car loading area. Another employee then helped me lift it onto the roof of the SUV. Every single one of the employees was polite, helpful, and just made the whole experience fantastic. The main barn does offer a small variety of food, along with drinks and cider, and wreaths. There is also a nicely decorated antique pickup for photos. The tree was certainly not the cheapest, but its fresh, big and full, and the whole experience made it a place we will definitely go back to! read more

This place was very nice. Good service and they had a ton of super nice trees! *ALERT* if you are not training for a marathon or to summit Mt Everest this place may not be for you. Was pretty exhausted after climbing the peaks and then dragging our tree back with only a provided rope. Overpriced low quality Christmas tree farm. They had two types of trees the most being Douglas fur. I've been going to Christmas tree farms as a tradition for past 18 years this place I tried because it was convenient also the people we had with us wanted to experience of getting their first real tree. Got this 170 dollar tree home and a week later all the needles are falling off. Never seen that happen before I guess that's why they have label all sales are final on their price sheet. I'm sorry for the people that went here since I knew what a true tree farm experience is. 65 dollars I would have paid for this tree with 85 dollar if over 8ft. Next time I'll go to the place I've trusted for past 18 years and make a weekend event out of it. My advice if you're from the city region go to Whole Foods get a chopped tree already and save money and get longevity out of your tree.... I hope this info helps, I don't write reviews much , but needed to help spread this disappointing experience!! read more

Welcome to a pandemic Christmas. Opening the day after Thanksgiving this was the place to be. Lines out into route 7 to get in. Get in an park, ez and orderly. Some folks are tailgating ( drinks, waffles and eggs) some have brought the entire extended family, some came by themselves for the pick up and go. Get your map, your saw and your rope ( for dragging). Go on a hunt for the perfect tree. There are bathrooms (porta potty s), small snack shop and tons of places to snap pictures. Cut tree. Drag to line. From the line there's a system where at the bottom a staff member tags the tree with your initials, another member places tree on the tree shaker, once it's shook another wraps the tree, measure and then they call your initials. You get back a stub with the height. Go pay. Return with paid ticket, your tree then gets the green light. Gets places on front hauler and taken to the front of the farm by the parking lot. Get your twine, tie the tree down and head home. It's simple enough. Always love cutting trees but this would qualify in my book slightly above family farm, but not quite corporate. Maybe best described as " very large and well run, not quite rustic but not quite modern". Would I return again? Maybe. My preference was the smaller farm we experienced last year HOWEVER, I can honestly say that I recognize that those were different times and circumstances and that might have skewed my preference. I would, however, not shy from placing Snickers Gap among my recommendations. read more

This place has become a victim of its own popularity. We're locals and started going about 15 years ago, but in the last few years, the crowds are nuts. If you try to go after Thanksgiving, you have to wait in line for at least an hour. This happened to us last year, so we decided not to go this year. The cars line up on Rt. 7 West which seems like an accident waiting to happen. I believe all the people in MD, plus Fairfax, Reston, Arlington, and DC have discovered this place and now you just can't enjoy the experience because it's packed with long lines. Also, the prices have gotten to be insane. And I really doubt it's inflation, I think they believe they can charge those prices based on the demand. A 7 ft. tree is now $148. We saw trees at other farms that were $70-100 so SG is way overpriced. They do have nicely shaped trees, but I see that right now they're only offering Colorado Blue Spruce which is too spiky for us, and they're closing on Dec. 9! That says a lot right there about the crowds. read more

Tradition is what it is and for us there are two mainstays - (1) Fresh Tree we cut down and (2) Santa always brings new jammies on Christmas Eve. Growing up we weren't always able to go to a tree farm and shopped our "fresh cut" tree at the local Fire Department lot. We have been loyal fans of Snickers Gap for over 5 years....and yes, they are pricey, but I can count on one hand how many needles fell from this tree after we put it up 3 weeks before Christmas! They have the usual varieties, Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir, White Pine...and they are all healthy. The owners of this tree farm groom the acres of trees well, so you aren't met with a bunch of weeds and tall grass when you are on the hunt. Its really a family environment...the kids running wild, some families bring their dogs (all decked out in their winter finery, and the fun assortment of Santa hats - some this year actually sang - are entertaining. Its busy, the lines can be long, and it can be COLD on the mountain...but the experience is wonderful. They do have cider and peanuts offered in the area near the tree wrapping station and there are typically local high school students offering their services and even selling candy during the day too. Lots of trees to cut the day after Thanksgiving. We have always (for 26 years) had a real tree. We'd never had any problems at all with needle retention because we invested in a good, deep tree stand and I'm kind of over-invested in watering (one year we had a tree grow a root, and I've been trying to get it to do it again). Last year, we had a problem with a Frasier fir that was the first season for growing at another farm. Same issue: Our tree is turning brown and the needles are all falling. Not near sunlight, not near a heat register. Lots of water...(stand holds about 5" of water and I fill it if it is down 1/2 an inch--like I said, I'm kind of over-invested.) Heat set at 68 during the day and 65 at night. White LED lights. Check, check, check and still completely dying. 13 days old. I read on line that you can mist the tree, so for the first time ever, for the last 4 days, I've been misting it (ornaments and all) at least twice a day. No help. This tree farm's website has no information about which trees to select, and offers Colorado Blue Spruce and Douglas firs, which we chose. Middleburg Tree Farm has a caution on their website: don't cut a Douglas fir until at least December 1, because they don't retain their needles as long. Stay with the blue spruce if cutting early. I wish this farm offered the same advice, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that less than 14 days is short for any fresh-cut tree. This tree was $110 because it was 7 ft. That's about $9 a day at this point, and the tree is now a fire hazard. Although it may not be a diseased tree, and this could just be "coincidence", I also was disappointed that there wasn't a nice snack shop or shop for additional greenery, wreaths, ornaments, etc. We were spoiled by The Farmer's Daughter in Auburn, MA, where there was more than just Christmas trees...it was an entire experience. We will be headed back to GREENWORKS NURSERY for our replacement tree again. And our search will begin there next year. I'm starting to believe that, although we try to support local businesses, the tree biz in VA doesn't raise as hardy of trees as are imported. That's the other reason for 2 stars. read more

We just got home from picking out a tree and it took most of the ride home to cool down from the anger we felt when we left. Less than 50% of the staff was wearing masks, fellow patrons were not wearing masks, and there was absolutely zero attempt to control the crowd and enforce social distancing guidelines. Snickers Gap tree farm is a lovely place, and the grounds and the trees are very well kept. But as others have noted, their prices are really high. We've gotten our tree out at Snickers Gap tree farm about three times now, typically going to another different farm in Maryland on alternate years. I just checked the 2016 prices for each, and Snickers Gap prices are *more than double* the other place we know of! Ouch!! Snickers Gap definitely has a more high-end "agritourism" vibe, but honestly I can't say that the experience or quality is sufficiently different to warrant such prices. I've been quite fond of S.G. but I doubt we'll be going there again, which makes me kinda sad. read more

That beautiful red vintage truck is what drew me to this location when I saw a friend post about it a year ago on Instagram. But man, the whole experience is stellar! To cut your own Christmas Tree down is a whole nother experience. If you have kids, it's a definate must as the thrill of finding your perfect tree, with the whole family, is something they'll remember forever: good ol' Snickers Gap will give you that. The drive out to the farm from NOVA is awesome. Beautiful, pristine, and you feel as if you get away from the 'city life'. The parking lot is decently big; however, it gets full quick as this place is uber popular. After you park, when you walk in the direction of the trees and barn, someone from the farm will greet you warmly and ask if you've been there before. Either way, they'll give you a map of the grounds, a saw (if you didn't bring your own, which your more than welcome to do), and a strong rope to drag your tree to the barn. The map is clearly marked between the types of trees and you'll be overwhelmed by how many great specimens there are. Before you get passed one lot you'll be exclaiming "I've found our tree... I've found another...", etc. Once you've found that glorious tree, you cut 'er down, attached the rope, and drag your tree to the barn, which is always bustling with workers and patrons. There you'll drop your tree off to a helper and they'll place it into a shaker to get a majority of the dead and/or loose needles off. From there, they put it through a great netting machine and finally put it up to their measuring stick to see how much you owe. They'll tag it with your name and give you the payment card to take inside the barn. Inside the barn is awesome! Our kids love it as there is hot and cold apple cider (complimentary), wreaths to be purchased and other assortments of freshly made Christmas decor. After you pay, you tell the workers you're ready to head back to the car lot and once they've put your tree on the front of the tractor bulldozer blade, along with others, you get in back hay-ride style. Needless to say, to the kids, this is one of the hghlights. A mere 2 - 3 mins later, you're back at the lot. If you need it, helpers will take your tree to your car and help you get it in the back or on the roof. Bascially, it's service all around here! The trees are healthy and will easily last you well into the new year if desired. We always leave it up until 6 Jan. Phenomonal farm and we don't hesitate to go back year after year. It almost wouldn't be Christmas without our fabulous Christmas Tree from Snickers Gap. read more

The positive: 1) Huge farm 2) Awesome selection of trees The negatives: 1) Huge farm - you must carry your tree (no matter where you are on the farm) back to a central location; bring a tarp or better yet - a wagon of some sort. 2) Prices are not posted anywhere at the farm! After spending $201.40 on our tree (give it we go big) we looked up their webpage. Up to 10' is $135...they marked our tree as 10'3" - which those 3" now cost us $195! We have to cut off some of the bottom to fit into our stand anyway - so I would have argued the 3" 4) No employees to lend a helping hand. You haul your tree back to your car and heave it on top (and just hope there is a kind stranger that is willing to help)! 5) oh...and this is all after waiting on the road leading up to the farm for over an hour (give it because part of their parking lot was closed due to the recent rains)...just plan ahead! read more

**3.5 Stars** Traditionally I do my tree hunting out towards Markham, way way out 66, but this year I was directed by a friend of a friend to check out Snickers Gap Tree Farm in Round Hill. Since we had a Christmas Party to go to the same day in Purceville, Round Hill was very close to where we needed to be. Wow does Snickers Gap have the whole buying a tree process down. Head into the parking lot, walk up to a little area where you gather the tree map, saw and a rope to drag your tree and off you go. The map includes the tree prices (which were MUCH higher than I was used to paying, basically $10 a foot...starting at 5 feet...7.5' Tree=$75..ouch.) We spent about 45 minutes wondering around trying to find our perfect tree. There were lots of families running around with their children, and you can even bring your dog with you. Once you find your perfect tree, you cut it down and head down to the tree shaker and bailer. They tag your tree so you know which one is yours, and then the put it on a tree shaker to get the loose needles off of it and bale the tree up. While all of this is going on, you can head in for the complimentary apple cider (either hot or cold) and look around the small shop that has live wreaths, etc. They have a tractor that you can ride back to your car if you dont want to carry your tree (yay big strong boyfriend.) I would seriously give this place 4 stars maybe even 5 if the prices werent so high. They do provide more service for you than the places I've cut down trees before (the shaking, the wine tastings from Bluemont Vineyard, etc) but for 1/2 the price I can get a tree out in Markham. read more

They have a small barn where they have hot apple cider waiting for you. My mother always makes sure it's the first thing we get. Now, it has become my tradition to take my wife, son and daughter. Driving out there, cutting down your own Christmas Tree with your son helping you cut and pull the tree down the hill is something they will alway remember. My first REAL Christmas tree experience was a success! I was told about Snickers Gap by some family friends who have been coming here for years and have always loved it. We got there around 5 p.m. on the Sunday after Thanksgiving (right around dusk) and it was clearing out since it was about to get dark - I would NOT recommend going this late, it gets cold SOOO fast. Though the farm is far down RT. 7, it was easy to find. We were given our saw and rope and went up the mountain to find the perfect tree (which was easy because there were so many). We chopped and dragged it down, where it was nicely shaken down (a little more couldn't have hurt) and tied up. Under 8 ft. runs you about $90, which yeah, is a bit pricey, but you are paying for the experience as part of it. The owner was nice enough to help us tie our tree to the roof of my car, which doesn't have a roof rack, even though it was about 30 minutes after closing. Pro tip #1: Buy a tree bag to lay under your skirt. This way after the season, you can wrap it up and dispose of it easily. Snickers Gap sells these for about $10 and they are about 10 ft. long. Pro tip #2: Never go after a rain fall. You'll regret it and muddy up your car. read more

An outing to find our Christmas Tree at Snickers Gap has been a family tradition for years, we love going to farm! They have a great selection of beautiful trees, a friendly staff that gives out saws, and fields that are always extremely clean and fun to walk through while looking for a tree. At the barn they have wine tastings with local vineyards, a family staffed food tent, wreaths, tree stands and other goods, they also offer complimentary tastings of hot mulled cider. They shake and wrap your tree, then load it on a tractor-pulled wagon back to the parking area when you're done, the kids always enjoy the ride. The owner suggested that I visit their website before coming out which I've found to be good advice, it is updated often with a daily blog on weather, conditions and events at the farm. We've been going to Snickers Gap Christmas Tree Farm for many years now. It's become a tradition to drive out from Arlington and go hunt for our perfect tree and we're never disappointed with the selection. I grew up having Douglas Fir trees, and there is always a wide range of good looking trees to choose from. The staff is always friendly and helpful and you can have some hot cider while you wait for the tractor to bring your tree down to your car. My only complaint is that the prices have been creeping up over the years and are almost to the point of being a little more than I'd like to spend, however I understand how tough it must be for farms these days to keep up with expenses, especially when seasonal like a Christmas tree farm. read more

We have been coming to Snickers Gap for many years with our girls and dog. They have great trees and the staff are exceptionally nice and helpful. This is the best tree farm in Northern Virginia. We got our tree today and I lost our key fob while cutting down the tree. The owner and staff went out of their way to help us. Snickers Gap Tree farm is our family tradition. We get two Colorado Blue Spruce from them each year. The farm is a good size - divided into twenty seven blocks that I guess are at least an acre each. They also grow Douglas Fir and Norwegian Spruce. They also have a better size selection (short to very tall - 14 feet at least) than most farms. As for quality of trees, the two we cut each year are always straight, sturdy and hold a lot of ornaments and lights. They always last at least six weeks and sometimes up to eight weeks before significant needle drop. Prices are more than the big box stores but for the quality, selection and ease of obtaining - I think they are extremely fair. The staff are extremely helpful and they go out of their way to assist! read more

My husband and I have gone to Snickers Gap Tree Farm for the past 3 years. The first year we went, we arrived early and the place was very busy. We hiked deep into the trees and found the perfect Christmas tree. When you arrive, they hand you some rope and a hand saw (we bring a blanket too). They give you a map to locate the three varieties of trees and off you go! We are always on the hunt for the discounted trees, but that's only because there are so many great choices. The price is a little steep, but we buy our tree right after Thanksgiving and it survives (still green) into late January. We actually put the tree (undecorated) on our deck for a few months and let the birds enjoy using it. After you cut down the perfect tree, then you drag it to the barn. Someone will tag it for you and then while you pay, they shake it and wrap it up tight. As far as I have seen, they seem to be able to accommodate any size! ** They measure by height, so if you will be cutting off the top or bottom to fit it in your house.....go ahead and do that out in the field. We typically trim off the lower branches and trim down the base. We have been to a few other tree farms, but we haven't seen the quality. One tree farm, the trees weren't cut correctly and it was hard to find one with a good shape. Another tree farm had a disease on their trees, so it was slim picking. A few hints: Show up early! Bring your camera because the views are beautiful! Bring some patience and energy. We are young and adventurous, but it typically takes us between 1-2 hours to find our tree. We are pretty picky! Although one year, my husband found the tree in 20 minutes. :) The family is very kind. We e-mailed last year to go the weekend before Thanksgiving because we would be out of town for a week. They had no problem with it. :) We felt like it was very kind to "set up" a bit early for us. Give it a try! You won't be disappointed.
