Great selection and good, friendly service at the end of the tree cutting. There are also porto potties and a small food truck with limited refreshments. Come prepared to drag the tree yourself though! Would recommend at least two healthy adults. They give you a sled to help but it still requires some fitness to move the tree to the area where they bind them up, especially a larger one. Had a great experience coming to tag our tree this year. You come a few weekends before thanksgiving and pick/tag your tree. We saw several trees decorated with ribbons and special ornaments from others who had also tagged. It was great - No waits, no long lines, and a wide variety and selection of beautiful trees! We went the day after Thanksgiving and despite the insane crowd, we had a great time and picked out a beautiful tree. All trees regardless of size are $80 (except for one variety is $50). They do allow people to tag their tree weeks in advance, but there didn't seem to be as many as I was anticipating there would be. We enjoyed our experience despite the crowds and loved that they had a gift store, Santa, and food to purchase. There was a huge selection of various types of trees and we looked at less than half of them because the farm is so large. In the future I just won't go on Black Friday because the crowds were a logistical nightmare that they did not seem to expect. I think a lot of other local tree farms have next to nothing this year so that probably played into it- the place we always go told us they had barely any trees due to disease so we looked for a new place. read more

We went here for the first time this past weekend, and I have to say I am pretty surprised by all the negative reviews I see on here--this is pretty much the best "Pick-your-own" Christmas tree experience you're going to get within an hour of Northern VA. This place is HUGE and has the best variety/selection of types of trees I think I've ever seen at a Christmas tree farm, definitely in the south anyway. It's clearly a well-oiled machine--they've got their system down, and it works. Pick up your tag, a map, a sled for your tree and a saw and go. Come back, leave your tagged tree, get your car whenever you're ready and pull up and a bunch of strong dudes will effortlessly secure your tree in no time. We were looking for Concolor Firs specifically, which are actually pretty hard to find--they had an entire massive section of them to choose from. We found the perfect tree for $75--a bit pricey for the size, however I compared prices all around the area and this was definitely reasonable in comparison to everyone else we could've gotten a tree from. Also, for the experience--the beauty of the farm, the ease of the process, and the fact that my tree is STILL ALIVE today (1/23, after being cut down the first week of December, not even starting to shed yet!) I think the price was worth it. This was my first time driving my own car to a Christmas tree farm and we had about an hour's drive, at least partially on a highway that was 65 mph, back with it on top of the car. I was nervous, as growing up I'd experienced time after time where either the farm expected us to secure our own tree with our own supplies--if we didn't have rope or whatever we were just screwed--or secured it for us, at seemingly great difficulty, only to have the tree basically sliding back and forth or almost off of the car on the drive home. We'd get back and find it all jerry-rigged and tangly and as a child I used to get really anxious about the tree transport home, that we'd lose our tree or even worse, cause an accident if it fell off! Well, Moose Apple Christmas Tree Farm assuaged any latent fears I had over this. They made speedy and efficient work of securing the tree with their own super strong rope material, and even getting into the car we could see how secure it was. We drove home and the tree didn't budge the entire trip. Thank you, Christmas tree securer guys!! Lastly, this Christmas tree farm ALLOWS DOGS. That was a big reason we chose it. Seems like many others in the area--even those that are out in the country like this one--don't allow dogs. BOO! We were looking for a farm that would be our go-to from now on every year, and of COURSE we want to bring our pups along for the family Christmas tree experience! Dogs were totally welcome here, and dogs were everywhere! So many families and couples had their dogs along for the trip, and it was super heartwarming and made our experience even better (to not be given dirty looks for having our dogs, or made to feel out of place or unwelcome because of it, which I have experienced before). There's a little gift shop that annoyingly they make you go up to and walk through in order to pay for your tree--made more annoying by the fact that it was a GD sauna inside, and after you've been sawing and dragging a tree all over the place, that's not too pleasant. But, not a big deal. Also a little snack/cocoa/cider place with outdoor seating which we took advantage of and which was a lovely little end to our excursion. I just visited this place for the first time yesterday and I felt compelled to write a review. It's a little out of the way, but it's worth the drive. Right now it's a little early and most Christmas tree farms aren't open yet or they're only open for tagging. We needed a tree yesterday though, and after calling around this was the only place that answered the phone...and they said we could cut down a tree immediately rather than just tagging. Before I begin, I should mention that this was my first time visiting a Christmas tree farm where you cut down your own tree (but my roommate and I showed up prepared wearing red flannel like any lumberjack would). Upon arriving, my we were approached by a farmer-looking dude (i think he had overalls and everything). He greeted us, introduced himself, and then brought us into the shop. The shop is in a large wood cabin that he and his family actually live in (this place appears to be totally family-owned and run), but it's isolated from their living quarters. There is no bathroom in the shop, the only bathroom for customers is a porta potty that's outside...the lack of a decent bathroom is the only reason I gave this place 4 stars rather than 5. People travel great distances from the DC-area to get here, and it's in the middle of nowhere, so I think a lot of people would appreciate having a decent bathroom available. He gave us a tour of the shop which sold jellies, locally produced and packaged honey, and various decorative items...many of which were handmade including the Christmas tree skirts that were made by the sister of the woman working behind the counter. He also showed us some really heavy-duty Christmas tree stands that they get manufactured and sell. They looked really sturdy and must have weighed over 20 lbs, but they were over $100/each. Home Depot sells a similar heavy metal stand for $30 in the Garden section and unless you're getting a tree that's over 10' tall, I recommend the Home Depot stand as it's also more cosmetically appealing. He taught us about the characteristics of the different trees that were available at the farm (Douglas Fir, Concolor Fir [I believe it's also known as a White Fir or Silver Fir], Norway Spruce, Blue Spruce, White Spruce, White Pine, Scotch Pine.) and he provided us with a map of where each variety was located and described their sizes based on how many years old the trees were. Then he handed us a bow-saw and sent us on our way. It's also worth mentioning that he offered to carry the tree back if we needed any help. We didn't take him up on that though because we thought carrying it back was an essential part of the lumberjack experience. We walked by the picnic area on the way to get our tree, it was pretty nice and we immediately regret not bringing anything to eat. The views were incredible, everything about this place was beautiful. We walked around tree shopping for a bit, I had initially planned to get a ~6' tall Douglas Fir but then my roommate fell in love with a ~7' Concolor Fir instead so we went with that. It's really an interesting tree; it's sort-of a bluish-green and the needles (or leaves?) smell like citrus. We cut it down and carried it back. It really wasn't very heavy, my roommate and I both have smaller builds and we had no problem getting it back to the barn. At the bar, they put the tree on a tree shaker and drill a hole vertically through the trunk for the Christmas tree stand. They also wrapped it in mesh, carried it to my Honda Fit (where it easily fit), and tied it to the roof. They did a good job tying it down too because we drove it 70 miles, all the way back to Alexandria, often exceeding 70 mph and the tree made it. Once the tree was tied down we went back into the shop to pay. In addition to the tree, we purchased an inexpensive pack of preservative that increases the life of the tree and its needles. I thought that the prices of the trees were reasonable; they were flat-rate rather than by-the-foot. The prices were as follows: $55 - Douglas Fir $55 - Concolor Fir $55 - Colorado Blue Spruce $55 - Norway Spruce $40 - Scotch Pine $40 - White Pine $55 - White Spruce The woman at the counter in the shop explained how to properly care for the tree to maximize its life as well. That pretty much concluded our visit, but not our day... On our way out of Berryville we spotted a sign the Veramar Vineyard which is located right near this Christmas Tree Farm and decided to stop there. If you're visiting this place from the DC area, I recommend that you make a day-trip of it and do a tasting at Veramar because the wine was great and we had a lot of fun...we enjoyed it so much that we even joined their Estate Club! Now the tree is standing in our condo wrapped in 600 lights and it looks great! We love our tree and we loved our experience here at Moose Apple Christmas Tree Farm! read more

This place was absolutely the PERFECT destination for our old fashion family Christmas tree hunt! Set in an incredibly beautiful secenic vista, the farm itself was very easy to navigate, with oodles of trees to choose from! The staff were gracious and so helpful...learning that I was the Pacific Northwest and unable,to find my go to tree (the Noble Fir) now that I live in VA, they introduced me to my new favorite east coast tree, the effervescent blue concolor spruce! We could not be happier. The farm even shakes, bails AND loads your trees for you (including tie downs for your car!). And I could not believe it when the whole experience cost less than $70 (any size tree!) since I was used to paying $100 or more before. My family went today - excited to get back to our tradition of cutting our own tree. If you are looking for a beautiful tree 6 feet and under- they have plenty. I would not recommend for anything above 6 feet. What they don't say on the website is at least 75% of the taller trees are "sold" and marked as such in the fields. So very difficult to find a larger tree. Staff were friendly but they are severely understaffed. We waited well over an hour to shake and bail the tree. While waiting, a young man offered to chainsaw any lower branches and straighten the root- I said yes to cutting smaller branches. He proceeded to cut a very large branch off- so large that others in line around us commented how that side would have to be against the wall (which it did). All in all, if you want a smaller tree and can visit during the week (NOT weekend), I would recommend. read more

We went on Nov. 26th to pick up our tree. I was very disappointed in the limited selection and the very few tall trees to cut. The nicest looking ones were already sold. A LOT of the trees were dry. I try not to compare places because each farm should be its own experience. We just moved down to Virginia, having come from the North East area and cutting trees in Connecticut, I had high expectations. I considered leaving the farm and driving to another but was worried I'd find the same limited selection and dry trees. We paid $70 for about a 6 foot tree. They have an area where they sell food and hot cocoa. Their little market where you pay has ornaments and other Christmas decorations. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They help you tie your tree to your car, which I would expect but they are really nice, which is why they didn't get one star. read more

Went out to the farm mid afternoon yesterday (12/6). Quite a few folks were leaving with their trees. I asked one guy if I could use a saw that was on the ground and he said that I could. A minute later, another guy came over and said that they stopped letting folks cut their own trees, but if we wanted to do that (cut our own tree) it would be an extra $30. ......I immediately felt like I was being scammed, so we left............and will NEVER be back. read more

Had a great experience at Moose Apple, and found a lovely 10' spruce. Tree was $70, which is a bargain. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The tree was trimmed, shaken of loose debris, and bailed all free of charge. Although we had a pickup truck, the staff will assisting you with loading and securing the tree to your vehicle. The place is dog friendly, which was a plus for us. Selfishly I'm afraid the word will get out on this place, but we'll be a repeat customer. read more

Looks like a well oiled machine but it's not. I was shopping inside the market and decided to purchase a wreath, in addition to my $70 tree. I was stopped by a young girl who asked if I was going to purchase the wreath as I was heading inside and I said yes. She took the wreath and took the tag off and said I can pay inside and it will get loaded with my tree. I was very upset to learn an hour later when I got home that the gentlemen loading the tree (despite a reciept and two tickets for both the tree and the wreath) did not load my wreath. When I called to get reimbursed or have the wreath mailed to me, Paris told me there were no left over wreaths....hmm well there should be at least one since the one I bought was not given to me. For a family owned business they clearly could care less about their customer customers. Won't be going back unless this is resolved. read more

I have been coming here for 5 years now. I found this place when Snickers Gap down the road hiked up their prices to upwards of 75 bucks. This place was awesome , the selection was terrific , prices were 40 for firs 60 for spruce no matter the size and the help was phenomenal . They used to run tractors and all you had to do was cut the tree you picked and drag it to the nearest path. Last year they stopped that and gave out sleds. Try dragging a 9ft fir up an incline a few acres. It's quite a work out. This year we decided to go spruce. The farm is really popular now and gets very crowded on weekends. The selection was not that good. You can tell over the last few years how many trees have been cut down so there are a lot of smaller immature trees. Most spruces under 5 ft were nice but you couldn't find a good one over 6 ft. After 2 hours we got tired of looking and found a smaller one that would do. I cut it , dragged it to the shed paid and showed the kid how much I wanted shaved. They were so busy I couldn't find help tying it to the car so had to drag it to the lot and do it myself. By the time I got home I was beat. I drilled my own holes set it in water for the night only to find out they only shook and bound the tree. They didn't shave the bottom branches. Oh well , it was a nice place for the first few years. Time to find a new tree farm. read more

The farm is beautiful and the staff is super friendly. That said, they have a tough time accommodating large amounts of people efficiently. There four places you need to check-in at throughout the process. First, to get your ticket and map, then to have your tree bailed, then to pay for your tree, then to load your tree. Not an issue if the crowds are light. But with a lot of people, each of those steps requires waiting in line. We arrived at 1020 on the Friday after Thanksgiving and left about two hours later. I'd estimate 30 minutes of that time was for walking the farm and picking a tree. Like previous reviews, many of the choice trees were already tagged as sold which got a little frustrating. Nevertheless, we were in the spirit. Oh, and the parking situation also doesn't work well with large crowds. One lane parking with no signs or marshallers makes for significant bottlenecks. Easily a four or five star experience with no one around but two stars reflects our experience on the day after thanksgiving. read more

This tree farm does not properly water their trees and offers no refunds if trees expire before expected. We bought a tree and took all the precautions; cut some bark off of the base, water every day, closed nearby vent and covered with blanket, added preservative they recommended and some water pellets to help keep water around tree and now the tree is dead, 2 weeks for crying out loud! We have bought trees for 24 years and never had one do this! Stay away from this farm if you want a good tree that lasts. read more

Today was the 1st time visiting this farm. We were disappointed with our visit. We finally found a tree we liked at the end of the farm and then had to drag it in a sled back to the front. When we dropped the tree off the workers did not shake our tree. We had dead needles all over the place. We purchased a 5 foot tree and it was $70. Which I feel is way over priced for that size tree. I wouldn't recommend this place. There are plenty of other tree farms in the area with more of a selection and way cheaper. read more

First ,am not an expert on types of Christmas trees. Was given a map, but no picture or actual samples at the " barn" to tell what type tree you are looking for. And I mean a small sample , so you know what your looking for, would have been helpful. We picked a tree, thought it looked even, after we cut it down noticed had two major dead areas on two sides of the tree. We took it to the barn. Asked if we could just get a pre cut tree, that we were not happy with the one we had picked. The owner said, "all that will be cut off when it is trimmed up. Well we got home, put onto the drilled hole stand and its bald and uneven on the two sides. Really disappointed , If I did not live in Fairfax I would return it. And they charged me the wrong sales tax, was supposed to be 5.3%, they charged 6% Beautiful location. read more

We visited this farm for the first time as I read good reviews and the prices seemed lower than other nearby "cut-your-own" farms. Beautiful farm and friendly staff; however, the selection was disappointing. Seemed very picked through and we went the 1st weekend in December. So many short/round trees. We had a very difficult time finding a good option for our house. We settled on one and have been disappointed since we got it home. It is so dry and drops TONS of needles every day. I'm keeping it hydrated in a cool spot in the house, but that doesn't seem to help. Looks like we'll be going somewhere else next year. Wasn't worth it, in my opinion, just to save what ended up being about $10. read more

We have been going all the way to Chambersburg, Pa for many years to a farm that has nice trees. While there we found a tree stand system called the stand strait that is particularly useful for larger trees but works great for any tree. This stand uses a hole drilled in the base of the tree to insert a spike that's part of the stand. This stand ensures that your tree stays where you put it and is perfectly level and plumb no matter how crooked the tree actually is. It also has long legs and a deep reservoir to hold lots of water for a fresh tree. Well last year that particular farm in Pa was just out of the realm of possibility because of the weather. So we found this place, which is only minutes from home! They use the StandStrait system as well. This place will shakeout all the loose needles, straighten your cut and drill the hole in the tree for you once you cut one and bring it to the shop. We always get a large 10-12 foot tall tree so this stand is perfect for us. It was so nice to find someone local that not only has this system, but they are great, friendly people. The trees are beautiful and well taken care of with perfect shapes. They have a tree that is perfect for anyone here. The prices are good and the service is top notch. You won't find a better place to get a tree around here, no matter what tree stand you use! That said this is our new place and coming here is now our tradition when tree time comes around. This place would be worth a long ride into the country for, so if you are anywhere within a hundred miles I'd recommend giving this place a shot. They also have some nice crafts and decorations inside their shop as well. We really do like to support our smaller businesses in the area as well. And these folks make sure that you leave feeling like you made a good choice! We will come here for our tree every year as long as they are open and we are able to come here.
