Of particular interest to me…read morewas the availability of the Salish honey for purchase, the very same organic honey that is produced by the apiary on the Salish grounds for their restaurants and honey-based spa treatments. If you know anything about the plight of honeybees and the fraud in the honey distribution business, you'll appreciate that the folks at Salish Lodge have tripled their original number of hives, planted wildflowers and berry plants that not only help sustain the bees but also are used in creating the Lodge's special jams, and plan to continue maintaining the apiary as a protected habitat for the bees. I purchased some honey (real 100% honey!) to bring home, and a tin of honey vanilla black tea that smells just heavenly. If you're into it, they also have Honey Ale and honey-flavored vodka, and chocolates made with their honey. While I've been going on and on about honey, The Country Store has much more. You'll find gifts and arts and crafts for everyone on your list here. I recommend stopping in even if you're not staying at the Lodge.

There's more stock here, as a result of its size, and it's collection is arguably better curated and more stylish than most, depending on your taste. It's the kind of place my wife and I would love to shop, if things were a bit more affordable, but YMMV. Still, Birches Habitat is definitely worth checking out for the style-conscious consumer, and absolutely the best boutique in North Bend! You may find better deals at the outlet mall, but you're not likely to find anything as swanky!

We're Hispanic and definitely got the vibe that one of the staff members was nervous we were going to steal something! The woman asked if my husband needed help 4x in the span of 20 minutes. He stepped outside to get reception and when he returned, she says "back again, I see". He met up with me towards the back wanting to leave and then she came up to ask if she could hold our items up at the front, I guess because she thought we were in cahoots. The whole thing is extra hilarious because we could easily afford to buy the entire store 4x over. My one regret is that my husband didn't share his experience beforehand so that I wouldn't have given them my money. Lesson learned.

I also appreciate the fact that much of merchandise comes from local & domestic artists and other small businesses. Even the stuff that is made overseas comes through small suppliers rather than the big distribution channels that bring in the same old stuff. The number of shirts, PNW centric books, trinkets and an abundance of cool hats made it a place we won't soon forget! The ladies working here were all very helpful, friendly and created a very warm vibe! The prices were all about what you'd expect and not overly expensive. There were fresh bouquets made ready to go as well as fresh honey from a local vendor. The field was easy to navigate and the aisles were wide enough we could walk down them and not feel like we were hurting the plants. Jerry picked us nice flowers to match the kiddos outfit colors and Angela wrapped them up for us to make our trip home less stressful. They recommended a nice spot by the river to have a snack and enjoy the nice labor day weekend weather.
