We live in the biggest town near here so when I looked up hotels that have pools, the Loge Alta…read moreCrystal looked intriguing. It had everything we needed so we packed our bags, grabbed a pizza & wings (knowing there are no dining options up that way) and headed up the mountain. Just prior to our arrival we received a text with our room # and door code. Virtual check in is always preferred. Upon arrival, we unloaded our truck to a well appointed and clean room. I was surprised that it had a true kitchenette with all the necessities. The couch was stained but it wasn't off putting - I'm sure it's seen a lot of use. It pulled out to a full size bed which my teenager slept well on. The bedroom had a queen that I had to share with my 11 year old but it was comfortable and the whole place had just what we needed for bedding and toiletries. The boys wanted to go swimming so we all got dressed and headed to the heated pool. It is older and again stained but clean and well maintained. I could tell that they do a good job with keeping the chemical right (I formerly had to maintain a small apartment pool & tub). While the boys swam, I decided to take the dogs for a walk around. Nice grassy field with poo bags & can for waste. We then just started walking further up the hill past the cabins where I discovered a sign "Trail" so I followed it. It led me to a beautiful waterfall. Had I brought the right shoes, I probably could have kept exploring. Returned to the boys and we wrapped up the night watching a DVD (found in the office after launching an inquiry as to why the Direct TV wasn't working - hello satellite! Lol) Slept through the peaceful night and checked out early around 9am (11am is check out time). I plan to stay again...this time with appropriate footwear.

Hiking in the autumn, you will enjoy the fall colors along the way. Much of the trail is through the 2017 Norse Peak fire area, so you may encounter plenty of windfalls - use care, and watch for hanging trees. A quick, chilly dip in the river afterwards is always refreshing for washing off the trail grit & grime!

And then Summer arrives. The mountains and I go on our first date of the season. Granted it was still early in the season. You see, I have a hiking calendar all planned out: APRIL-JUNE: No matter how the mountains scream for you, don't go. There's still tons of snow up there. JULY: Right about now, the snow is waning. If the call is too powerful, be prepared for the occasional snow drift and some muddy slogging. AUGUST: Don't even think about it. This is when the mosquitoes rule the forest. They all wait like streetland gangs ready to pounce on unsuspecting prey. SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER: This is when I go. This is when I plan to eat up all my vacation days. It's just cool enough to put the mosquitoes to sleep till next year. The huckleberries are harvestable & peaking. This is my Xanadu, oh wait that's a corny 70's movie (Man! And I was flowin', too!) THIS IS MY Shangri-la. ******************************************* Ok, back to FIFE'S PEAK TRAIL! ******************************************* I had to get out of town and head to the Cascades. I intended to head toward Chinook Pass. I've only driven this road a few times, but I have remembered seeing trails along the way. I made mental notes of "to-do-ing" them some day. Just before making the final vertical climb up Chinook Pass, I found a pull-off: Fife's Peak Trailhead. This looked as good as any place. There were only a few other cars here. My companions (two dogs) and I set out on the trail. There's nothing like being out on the trail. Within seconds you just get it. The smells are so sweet (well, except when Gomez has to poop). The colors are so vibrant (the blues and greens brand themselves on my brain). The silence can be ear-busting. We were having fun on the trail. We passed over a few streams. Saw cool views of the craggly peaks to the north of us. We kept on walking. I was waiting for when we'd point northward and start climbing. Unfortunately, it never happened. This trail basically paralleled the road. We ended up hiking for about 45-60mins and hit a camp ground---sort of disappointing. Here, there was a map of the area. Apparently, we were hiking on cross-country skiing trails. So yeah, there might have been an honest to goodness hiking trail, but I think I missed it. I blame Gomez. Gunner & I always blame Gomez. So, it was an ok hike. It was good for ending my mountain-hiking-virginity for 2010. But yeah, go here for a short mountain bike ride, or some decent cross-country skiing in the winter.

We parked at Liberty Park, which is next to the Renton library. From there, you can walk down to the trail, heading northward. The first part of the trail is a brick path, immediately adjacent to Cedar River. This portion gets flooded during the heavy rain season. On this pleasant day, we were visited by ducks and enjoyed some flowers along the way. This trail also goes pass one of the Boeing sites. If you trespass, you can get up close and personal to some 737's though I am not recommending that. :P The trail transitions to the official park portion, named Cedar River Trail Park. Normally, there are pamphlets for kids to explore nature. But with COVID, they are not leaving any papers out to grab. The area has picnic tables for your convenience. The north end of this trail is the Renton Rowing Center and the southern tip of Lake Washington. You can literally see Mercer Island in front of you, Seattle to the left, and Bellevue to the right. I loved standing here enjoying the breeze from the lake and the view. If you're lucky, there are several benches up for grabs here. Two sculptures during this walk were particularly fitting. A boat themed one with a message of we're all in this together, and a boy reading with a mask on. The round trip of my walk was just under 4 miles.

Some portions are paved and very accessible while other areas are unpaved. I haven't been on the trial in it's entirety, but the areas I have been to are maintained nicely. Like many (if not all) of the trails in Washington, there's a variety of animals and scenery to enjoy and take in while you get some exercise in. There are also a few places along the way that have those "adult playgrounds," ...I mean exercise equipment...to further enhance your workout. There are actually playgrounds as well for the kiddos to enjoy! Well, once people decide to get with the program and keep their germs to themselves. Lots of open space, wear sunscreen!

There isn't a trail that resumes right after at the bridge on the Gig Harbor side but the Cushman Trail isn't far from the bridge at all. You just cross the viaduct that goes over the toll area for the bridge , get on the road that heads west and before long you will come across a sign indicating that you are at the Cushman Trail. So arguably it's a continuation trail but probably not technically. This is a great trail as it is well maintained and is wide and has lanes for bike, walking and scooter traffic. As you head into Gig Harbor you will see a sign that you are entering the city limits of Gig Harbor. A couple of times the trail becomes part of a road or a sidewalk but the signage is great and as long as you pay attention to the signs you won't lose the trail. I was here just after the trees hit their peak with Autumn color but the Cushman Trail is great to take in in that regard. After hitting the city limits there were signs for each crossing that indicated that motorized vehicles were not allowed. So yeah. my scooter sort of fits under that. Nobody seemed to mind that though and the trail was busy. I even saw other electric scooters as well. I didn't get to ride my scooter as much as one would think because there are several pretty steep hill grades on this trail especially towards the middle to end but it was ok...I was enjoying the scenery. My scooter doesn't do hills well let alone steep ones so that's why so much walking happened for me. For the walker or the bicyclist those hill grades would be great for exercise. Cushman Trail is a very nice trail to explore much how it is with visiting the town in general.
