Piper Haus - "Closet" and noisy air conditioning unit

Oh how I wish for zero stars. We were on a trip with a group of friends and this is where they…read morepicked to stay. The pictures from whatever booking site they used are very deceiving. Looking at the booking site pictures, I wasn't thrilled with the place but I figured I could handle it for 2 days. Once we got there, however, it was awful and it was a miserable stay. As soon as you walk in the door you are knocked over my the overwhelming smell of mildew that permeates the building. It is dark but not dark enough to hade the wrinkled up carpet that you don't want to walk on barefoot. The bathroom we used was dark and the toilets barely flush, very challenging when you are sharing bathrooms with others and people need to flush more than pee. All the rooms had missing or burnt out lightbulbs that added to the darkness of the place. The window air conditioning unit in the living room kitchen are was loud and leaked water on the floor so we were constantly wiping up puddles of water. The air conditioning unit in the attic bedroom we had, kept the room cool but it was loud and woke you up about every 30 minutes when it was going through some cycle that sounded like water running down the wall. There are no closets in the bedrooms either. The deck had 3 gas grills and they were all so disgustingly dirty you wouldn't want to cook on them. The binder with instructions said the house had been "cleaned and sterilized" I'm pretty sure that is false.

They have a few options here in terms of size and price, but the main area is easily accessible from everywhere. Even though it's just a short distance from town, you feel like you're way out in the woods. Our cabin was clean and comfortable, with a couple different sleeping areas, a full kitchen, fridge, etc. I brought home a day's fishing catch and cooked it up right there. If you come with a larger group they have central fire pits and grilling areas and a couple big party shelters protected from the rain. They have WiFi throughout the property, which you'll probably need as I had no cell service up here. There was a baby deer on the property whose mother came by periodically to check. There's a sauna and a barn with bikes for everyone to use. Super peaceful and relaxing vacation.

And not only were the aesthetics amazing, but the cabin was immaculately clean and so comfortable! My bed was very comfortable and the furnishings in general allowed for real relaxation. We enjoy going out to eat and antiquing and other activities when visiting the North Woods, but both my daughter and I said it would not have been a tragedy if we would have had to spend more time indoors, due to weather. Just a great experience!

Less than a block from the "Main Street", and 2 blocks to the Madeline Island ferry line. We awoke to beautiful sunrises in our backyard of Lake Superior. Maybe 20 feet from the water, with nothing in our way but the lovely patio table provided by the condo. We were traveling with my parents, so we opted for the 2 bedroom, 2 bath. The condo was spacious enough where we weren't crowded on top of each other, and had plenty of space. Toiletries are provided, even though the pamphlet said they were not, as was a hairdryer. Kitchen was huge, living room nice, although the tv was on the one and only switched outlet for the living room (issue for parents, not us - we weren't watching it). We thought the beds were hard. We compared it to sleeping on a box spring. Not great, but doable. And the microwave was from 1983, older than the cousin we came to see get married. But it worked! We checked in on Friday early afternoon, and their wireless worked. An hour later it stopped working, and we had a really hard time with the AT&T E network (sloooooooooooooow). Every time I called to the office, all we got was their answering machine. Sure, I could have left a message, but I didn't. My fault I guess, as I figured I'd eventually reach someone. I was wrong, so we never had wifi. Note: This property is managed by The Winfield Inn. All the other relatives who were staying in hotels were jealous of our place. Yeah, it's really nice. I'd stay here again without hesitation.
