Went here with an elderly person. Obtained from a Lutheran church off-Canyon Rd. (later thrown away) Cornflakes - contained yellow dyes, malt syrup - partially genetically engineered Offbrand 'pancake syrup' - 1st ingredient - high fructose corn syrup. hell to the no Apparently, the church gets donations, and purchases food from Oregon Fraud Bank. They purchase in bulk - canned food which contains the poison high fructose corn syrup. Most of the food at this location is heavily processed. Inspect your so-called food - how much is actually edible from these locales? Produce here was slimy and wouldn't even touch it for further inspection. Someone tried to give me products like laundry detergent and omg reallllly processed and chemical smell - had to leave. Why not just give out gift cards to a grocer's. Give people real choices - could buy a lot in bulk for $25 or $30 bux. Oregon Food Bank is a wonderful place to volunteer. My coworkers and I usually do an annual food bank teambuilder, and it is a great opportunity to get to know your teammates better while also giving back to the community. The OFB gets a lot of volunteers through their doors, and one of the ways they do it is by making it SO EASY to get set up on their website. If you are registering a group, you can select a date (usually you have to plan in advance as they fill up quickly!) with enough spots for your group. They earmark those spots for you and send you a link that you can send to your prospective group members for them to individually register on the website. If you don't fill up all of the spots that you reserved by a few days before the volunteer date, those spots open up for other people to register. Personally, I don't like the cold-room volunteering, so I always make sure that we sign up for dry goods repackaging. Instructions are clear, and the people leading the volunteer sessions are friendly. read more

Thankfully, I'm reviewing Oregon Food Bank from the perspective of a volunteer, rather than somebody who relies on their important services. I was fortunate enough to be a part of a group volunteering at OFB, and I was quite impressed with the entire process. They make signing up a breeze, plus they'll provide you with tools to help loop in your friends, family, and coworkers. Once your group is there, they are highly organized, quickly onboarding newbies so that precious little time is wasted on logistics. Soon enough, you and your associates are brought into the warehouse, a refrigerated space that operates as an assembly line. There are a variety of tasks available, with something suitable for every person's abilities. It was awesome seeing volunteers from all walks of life, working together to accomplish a goal. For about two hours, our group worked at a fast pace to create a stir-fry vegetable mix and then portion it out for distribution to the numerous organzations OFB supports. It was amazing to see how much we could accomplish in such a short period! Once you're done, there's a quick recap where the volunteer coordinator breaks down the impact of each volunteer, plus speaks to the larger mission of the organization. Then you're back out the door and living your life, hopefully a little more aware of just how fortunate you might be. A 5 star operation if I've ever seen one. read more

OFB West is a great sequel to the old favorite off of Columbia. It's organized and beautiful in that "captains of industry" kind of way, and features lovely photos throughout of people just like you(!) volunteering, packing food, sorting food, and delivering food to our neighbors in Oregon who need it. This was my fourth time rolling up my sleeves with the OFB, and it remains my very favorite organization with which to volunteer. They have a plan in place. They know how to work with groups. They stay on time. They have all of the equipment you need. Someone is in charge, and people are always available to help. And at the end, they do some quick math and show you what impact your two hours of sorting/packing/labeling has had. It is super satisfying, and a great way to get off your ass, in so many ways. read more

Volunteered here for my first time (with Yelp Helps team) and it was fun! They have a really good set up that anyone could participate in and only takes 2 1/2 hours of your time. On the day we went, they had us repackaged frozen food items into family size packages, while in a fridge-like environment. It was nice to escape the hot heat. You can bring large groups of people. Registration is required. Wouldn't mind volunteering here again! read more

VIOLATION OF STATE CHURCH SEPARATION RULES meant to preserve CIVIL RIGHTS!!!!! Oregon Food Bank needs to do a much better job enforcing the policies that maintain proper separation of church and state and preserve the civil rights of those who seek assistance at the many religiously affiliated groups that actually distribute the goods provided by Oregon Food Bank. I encourage all others to speak up and file formal complaints with the USDA and Oregon Food bank itself if they see religious activities, which are prohibited by agreement, taking place during food distribution hours in the same physical locale where the distribution takes place. I have been asked to pray and asked to leave after I objected to what was obviously a violation of these policies. Westside Church in Aloha in particular regularly violates these policies. read more

A great organization doing great things for the community. The people (employees and volunteers) are friendly, helpful, and passionate about the cause of feeding the needy. It is the only statewide food network in the country. The food repack is rewarding work and they let you know at the end of the two-hour shift how much the group repacked and give a little speech about lending them a hand without being heavy-handed in their approach. I have volunteered there for about two years now and for about 200 hours, and I have not had a bad experience yet. read more

Honestly, I love working here. It's always a fulfilling experience, and the volunteers and staff are great to work with. You meet so many new people and help a lot of people in need at the same time. It's hard work but always worth every minute. read more
