Honestly, I thought the whole spectacle was rather embarrassing. Then I found a quarterstaff in a bin. Yeah, an actual wooden quarterstaff, like the kind that Donatello would use to whoop Foot Clan ass. You can bet your sweet patootie that I walked around the store for the rest of our visit like Gandalf the Grey, and all who gazed upon my glorious discovery with green with envy. I also happened upon a (scattered, deconstructed) collection of miniature ships from a long out-of-print tabletop game, which I spent a good half hour gathering all of the pieces I could find, in order to salvage and rebuild as many ships as possible. I paid approximately $2.00 for a collection worth about x100 that, although I'm not likely to sell them, because I have an actual use for them! But the real jackpot ended up being the ~8 dresses and complete outfits that my wife picked out for herself, totaling around $6.00 (as most items, including everything mentioned above, is priced by weight), and each of them brand new, high-quality articles of clothing that she absolutely fell in love with. NOW I understand why the swarm of fashionistas and wanna-be influencers were falling over each other, trying to pick out the hottest items from the trough of slop dished out from the warehouse at regular intervals. This is bargain hunting in its ultimate form. Sure, there is a lot of useless crap to sift through, but with a keen eye and quick reflexes, anyone can walk away from this Goodwill location adorned like a princess, or equipped like a wandering wizard...depending on your personal style.

The employees have been friendly and I'm always offered a receipt. This is mere blocks from my office and an easy dip in on my way into work. It's convenient for me. Goodwill always has value. I think that's literally the expectation in going to Goodwill. I'll have to shop it at some point but for now, it's just drop offs!

The clothes had a musty smell and weren't the greatest quality to begin with. They had a mixture of household stuff of varying quality. Prices seemed reasonable. They have sales often, the owners will remind you as you check out, so be sure to scan the barcode they give you on the flier. The store is smallish, but not cramped. Several people can browse at once without getting into each other's way. Large selection of retro VHS tapes. Interesting hodgepodge of items and nicknacks that are likely priced well below market value. Main business through the door is likely from the neighborhood families in need, and taking advantage of the discounts for clothing and such. I did not look through the clothing selection, so I cannot speak to its variety, but it did seem to take up most of the floor space. All in all, if you've checked everywhere else, and you're in the area, it doesn't hurt to check them out--especially if you are a collector of something. Consider donating here before going to goodwill. The money raised in the community stays in the community.

If I were to create a list of my favorite stores in Portland, Better Bargains is one that I would deliberate intensely on whether or not I should add it to the list. It's one of those hit or miss places that has potential for finding the bargain of the century. Don't visit during peak traffic because the business is on a section of Sandy that is impossible during rush hour. The parking lot is directly across from the intersection of 102nd and Sandy, and traffic backs up such that it blocks the entrance. You'll hate your life if you get trapped in this vortex of parking hell. The store has several aisles of furniture stacked high with assorted bits and pieces, and the east and west walls are covered with a patchwork of bagged treasures that are preassembled and priced accordingly. If you are big into art and craft projects, I've found some of these curated bags to be useful. It's best to visit the store on Wednesdays and Saturdays when a 25% storewide discount is applied toward all purchases. For me, the jury is still out on this thrift shop because I've yet to find a treasure I want to show off to all my friends. Maybe one day!
