RUN FROM THIS PLACE!!! I left in the middle of my cleaning because of poor service and ZERO quality. As a first time patience, I asked - when I scheduled my appointment - if I need to send over my x-rays. They said no. I went to my appointment and they said that they needed to do x-rays. At that time, they requested the name of my old dental office to call them during my cleaning, however, they decided to "do them the next time". The Dental Assistant decided to go ahead and start "cleaning" my teeth. She pulled down the light (which was a flashlight attached to a metal pole) and got out her cleaning tools. The drill kept burning up so she had to take a break. After nailing my gum for the fifth time, I got up and left. Other notes: They put all these "nice" decorations in the front to make it seem high-end (don't be fooled). The back room looks like a make-shift barbershop. I've never seen a dirter office before. I went on 5/4/23 as a DA for a working interview at 8:00. From the second I walked in, there was no structure and no guidance of how the day would run. I was the only assistant there(I was expected to assist with 2/3 pts at once, flip all the rooms and do sterilization). Dr. Sowell was running behind on each patient. One patient got up and wanted to leave and reschedule as he had been sitting in the chair for an hour waiting on Invisalign trays to be delivered. The 1st patient I assisted her with, she numbed her in the UL quadrant but was about to start drilling on the UR quadrant until the patient corrected her. She then tried to blame me for the mistake which was very rude and unprofessional as It was my first day at the office and had no previous knowledge of the treatment plan and work she had done on the pt. She wanted me to do 'extended functions' dental assistant duties that I was not comfortable with doing at all. I did not receive a lunch break or a break at all after asking her around 12:30 if I may take a lunch break. She was so behind on patients that we worked right through "my break". I was expected to work from 8am-4:30pm. I unfortunately had to leave around 1:15pm due to a death in my family, and even then she resumed to ask me can I seat two more pts before I left( she did not extend her condolences to me or even ask if I needed a second). The practice is very understaffed, the workers seem underpaid and overworked and the equipment is very outdated and old. Also, it took her more than 8 hours after me leaving the office to pay me for the working interview. I literally had to text and repeatedly call her office manager to receive my payment. She finally paid me the next day 5/5/23 and it wasn't the correct amount. Horrible HORRIBLE experience!! 0/10, would not recommend. read more

I went here for a cleaning and exam on a Groupon. I am a broke recent college grad and hadn't been to the dentist in way, way too long, so while I wasn't all the way surprised that I had cavities, I couldn't promise to drop the $700 to fill them right then and there. The dentist, who had orange-tan skin, a thinning ponytail, and teeth that glowed in the dark, peered at me and informed me that I really ought to make this a priority. "You know, I go to bars with patients and see them buying $40 rounds, and I think, they should be spending that money on their teeth!" My doubts about the likelihood that this dentist parties with his patients aside, I was extremely insulted that a person who'd known me for five minutes, three of which were spent with a suction device in my mouth, had apparently inferred that I've been blowing my dental budget on liquor. He then proceeded to rattle off various places, like dentist's offices and other establishments with waiting rooms, where I could show up smiling and hope someone needed a presentable receptionist to make enough money to fix my teeth. There is nothing that pisses me off faster than people with money telling people without money what their priorities should be. I'm happy for the dentist that he's managed to stay employed enough to afford both tanning and tooth whiteners during this recession, but if he at least read the news he would perhaps think harder before making assumptions about my level of financial responsibility. 2009 was about the worst year to graduate from college anyone can remember: suggesting that I lay off the sauce and get a better job like it hadn't occurred to me to look was both condescending and naive. I called at 9am for an emergency appt as a new patient and was greeted with love and care. They had me in at 10 and I was seen almost immediately. Hadn't been to the dentist in a while and they made it a wonderful experience. Everyone was friendly helpful and compassionate. Dr Sowell and her tech were kind and gentle, and did their best not to hurt me while doing X-rays. Everything was explained and they took the time to answer questions. The office is clean and technology is updated. No more uncomfortable biting down on hard film cutting into my gums while the tech runs out of the room to flip a switch. A small handheld device was used to take the X-ray as another small device was inserted and held at angles in my mouth. As the X-rays were taken they popped up on the screen in front of me. Next step is a root canal. I left the office feeling comfortable knowing that I would be in a good and gentle hands. Everyone was professional and caring. My cleaning was fine. The doctor and hygienist's "bedside manner" was very bland. Not that you have to be Steve Martin, but can I get some personality? The dentist insisted I had a procedure which my dental records proved never happened. That was a red flag. Then she told me I had a cavity even though she didn't see it on the x-ray and needed $850 worth of work to correct gum recession. My gums have had slight recession for years and no other dentist ever made a big deal. So today I went for a second opinion at Dr. Grant Sims who used x-ray and laser technology to prove to me that I had no cavities. Also, he said that no fillings were necessary and gave me evidence he learned from his on-going education. I think Dr. Sowell was looking to make a sale. read more

I am also a fellow groupon user. If the rating was solely based on my initial appointment for cleaning, x-rays, and evaluation and the 6 month follow-up cleaning I would give a 3.5 star rating. Good hygeniest, reasonably nice staff, bland dentist as far as personality goes but seemed very capable. Also, they had a special for around $70 for that six-month cleaning and my fillings were only going to be around $160 apiece. I think this might have been for Groupon users. But, there is a reason for this 1 star rating. Perhaps some will think it is a bit harsh and an honest mistake, but so not cool. On my third visit I was going in for 2 fillings, #18 and #19. This third visit was about a month or so after my cleaning. I was pretty certain that the teeth that needed fillings were on the left side but i wasn't absolutely certain. I think you can see where this is going..... I came in for the visit and they confirmed that I was there for 2 fillings. The dentist came in and they put the bite guard on my left side and were ready to put local on the right side of my mouth. I asked her, clear as day, "we are doing #18 and 19 today, right?". "Yes", she stated. Okay. She comes back in, numbs me, eventually I am numb. 10 minutes or so later she looks at my teeth. She seems puzzled. She asks for the xrays of my mouth. After a bit of trouble getting them, she looks at me and says, "I'm sorry". She numbed the wrong side of my mouth. Apparently, I should have asked, "We are doing 18 and 19 on the left side of my mouth". I wasn't aware that such an error could be made when your life revolves around the numbers of your teeth (among other important things like the difference between an incisor and a molar). I should have walked out then and there, but with my schedule it is difficult to get in to do these things. So, I had both sides of my mouth numb for 3 hours or so. Dinner was awesome that night, granted I knew not to plan anything special. So far, the fillings seem to be okay after 3 full days. A little tenderness during the procedure with the drilling and all, but nothing to traumatizing. Needless to say, I will not be going back. read more

I bought a groupon last year for So-Well Dental Associates. I had my teeth cleaned and the hygienist did a good job, she was very kind. After my teeth cleaning they told me what I needed to have done to my teeth. $900 worth in procedures... I was blown away. I've taken expectational care of my teeth and go every 6 months to have my teeth cleaned. I went 6 months after my original teeth cleaning visit to have my teeth cleaned for the second time. At the end of that appointment I scheduled to have 3 fillings done. When I went to have the 3 fillings done they decided without telling me they were refilling 2 fillings from me previous Dr. I was pissed that they did not discuss this with me. Well it gets better. Two days after I have 5 fillings done 3 out of the 5 are killing me. I cannot even chew. My left side is throbbing. I call back and they tell me to come in 2 days after that. Dr. SoWell puts a drill in my mouth and drills at the filling- 10 minutes later shes telling me that should help. Well 2 hours after that my teeth are hurting even worse so I call back again and go in the next day. Dr. SoWell decides to refill the left side tooth. Needless to say my mouth has never hurt to much. I am furious and even though this will be my 3rd time within 2 weeks going back after my fillings were first done I want my teeth to be fixed and I want my mouth to feel the way it felt before Dr. SoWell touched it. I can't believe the reviews for this office have been so terrible! I did see a groupon for this office but I didnt come here because of any groupon purchase. I came here because I was referred by a friend. If you are referred, you get $25 credit towards your visit. Yay! The staff here was very nice and my dentist was awesome! I bought the groupon too. I'm broke and needed a cleaning. I used to go every 3 mos but with the economy tanking I needed this deal. The hygienist was great. Once she dropped the sickly sweet personality she was really helpful and easy to talk to. I think her name was Marla. The dentist was arrogant and dismissive. She noted I need gum surgery and suggested I replace my fillings. The whole conversation took one minute. I feel so bad for Katherine S. Replacing fillings is a quick way for dentists to make a buck. I learned this from my last dentist. He said "sure fillings will need to be replaced but replace them when the fillings become loose or there's debris. No need to do it proactively. The trace of mercury in the old fillings is very small." He did actually replace one filling for me when it became loose. The digital xrays were great. The periodontist I'm going to wants a copy. SoWell will not release them unless I physically go back there and fill out a form. They won't accept and email or a fax. Rediculous. Unreal they expect me to go all the way back there. Perhaps I could even have the periodontist request them. They are tough to work with. I wouldn't go back there. read more

I used a groupon here in the Spring of 2010 and thought it was also a good way to find a dentist as I'd not found one yet. I didn't have dental insurance so i was paying out of pocket. i was 30 years and had never had a cavity. over the course of 1.5 years, this dentist found 2 cavities and insisted twice that i get work done for receding gums (probably 1000 total for all of this). I remember thinking this is weird since i've never had a cavity- hence not bothering with dental insurance. I called my parents and my dad said you are 30! it's totally possible that you got a cavity by now. I figured he was right and later had it filled along with a gum repair. two checkups later, she found another cavity to fill and another receding gum that must be fixed. she also sold me crazy expensive mouth wash for 'all these potential cavities' they were keeping an eye on. Well 6 months ago i found out that my regular health insurance covers cleaning and xrays for $25 copay so i found a new dentist and went. 'beautiful , perfect , no cavities'. i asked 'you mean no problem areas you should watch?' Nope. i followed up again today and the same story. I took one year to write this review based on that information. After my experience and reading these other reviews, it made me realize this dentist is a scam artist. I am pissed I had holes drilled in my teeth for no reason. The dentist also couldn't show me on the xrays where the the cavities are, as another reviewer mentioned, she just claimed they were there. What a great dentist! Everyone was very nice, and to me, that's what really matters. Nothing is worse than feeling condescended to at a place you don't want to be in the first place. So many dentists seem to take poor dental hygiene as a personal insult, but not here. The entire staff was friendly and ready to help me. My dental hygienist was very concerned about my comfort. When she gave me advice on caring for my teeth, she wasn't rude about it. Unlike most dental visits, I was not, for example, aggressively interrogated about my flossing schedule. When Dr Sowell came in she was also very gentle and friendly. Oh, and my teeth look and feel great. I've spent the last year or so stressing about my teeth, totally sure they were going to fall out by the time I'm 30 or worried that I have killer gum disease. The last time I saw a dentist he used scare tactics to try to get me to buy a full deep cleaning for over $500. Well, guess what? I never got that deep cleaning, but all that plaque is gone now with just one regular cleaning at So-Well. My only complaint is that So-Well is pricey. I never would have been able to afford this awesome dental care there if it wasn't for a special group-on discount. I'm still giving them 5 out of 5 because, come one, dental care is just expensive, bottom line. And while I'm no expert, they seem to have all of the latest in fancy tooth technology (digital x-rays!), so at least all that money is going towards something that benefits the patients. I just hope they continue to find ways to offer discounts to those of us without insurance. read more

Another Groupon user here. Meh is really the best way to sum it up. The office itself is very basic and the staff are nice enough. I had a cleaning, fine, not great, and then went back in a month later for repair on a chipped tooth. What I found annoying about this was that no one mentioned I'd be needing novocain for the chipped tooth. I have no idea how you're supposed to fix a chipped tooth, and I didn't think to ask how the procedure goes. Their oversight meant I had to reschedule a meeting afterwards because I was all lispy and I didn't want my client to think I was under the influence. More consideration & explanantion would have been and easy thing to offer and would have saved my day from further annoyance. Little stuff like that certainly doesn't inspire confidence that I'm getting the best care or service, that's for sure. For more complex work I will definitely be seeking another dentist. read more

Very disappointed with So Well Dental. 1. The past 2 times I visited, they told me I needed fillings on 2 back teeth. I disagreed both times, as both teeth had no pain and I had no reason to believe work was needed. I solicited a second opinion, and my new dentist said that fillings were not needed. I was put off that the only course of action the dentist presented was the drill. 2. One time during a visit, I was instructed that I needed X-rays: I stated that I didn't want x-rays even though my benefits covered them. The dentist informed me that they would go ahead and bill my insurance and that I could come in and get x-rays at a later date. Even if that billing practice is allowed, it didn't feel right. Why would I be billed before the service was rendered (especially if I didn't want that service in the first place)? 3. Lastly, I was unable to make an appointment and wasn't able to call in advance. I own this fact and that some offices will charge fees for no-shows. I was also ready for a new dentist by this point. When I called the office to determine how to proceed with the fee, I was continually pressed to reschedule a new appointment even though I had no intention of coming back. The pressure from the representative on the phone was unreasonable and made me feel uncomfortable after I told them I wasn't going to come back. Based on my above experiences, I would not recommend them for dental services. read more

This has been my best dental experience ever. Everyone there is super friendly. Each person goes out of their way to get to know you and the procedures are done very delicately. I barely felt anything when they had to numb me - and I'm not a fan of needles usually! It's really too bad I'm moving out of state because I can't imagine finding a better dentist. EDIT: Changed to 4 stars instead of 5. My billing estimate was way off. I had to pay over $500 out of pocket because they expected my insurance to cover something that they didn't. I blame myself for not checking before getting the work done. Lesson learned. But I'm not comfortable giving 5 stars when I had this happen. They covered some of the bill, but not all. I was quite nervous about going to a dentist, but Margaux Grason DMD @ So Well Dental was GREAT!!! She was knowledgeable, patient and explained everything she was doing along the way. Rachel Schick, my Dental Hygienist, did a great job calming and reassuring me after I freaked out after she pulled out this " ginourmous" needle. She took her time and when the cleaning got a bit painful she patiently applied some gel which helped immensely. She made the process bearable by checking in with me frequently and pausing when I needed it. My one critique is that they took a while to verify my insurance. I guess the their insurance person was out. All in all I recommend So Well Dental and will be going back. read more

Probably one of the worst experiences that I have ever had at a dentist. I arrived for my first appointment and waited for over 45 minutes to finally be seen. I used the washroom during my wait and when I walked to the back of the office, I saw the dentist chatting and laughing with one of the hygienists. She even made a point to say something when she saw me notice her.. something like 'sorry, we'll be right with you!' Yea, right. My father is a dentist who is retired and so from past experience, I know that you get your X-Rays first, then the cleaning, then the check up. This staff conducted the process backwards. In addition, I asked for case molds to be made to see whether or not my father thought I was a good candidate for Invisalign. They called my request, 'sketchy and weird.' Finally, after the X-Rays were done (1 hour and 15 minutes since my arrival), the Doctor came in and started her check. This was the most uncomfortable part and she kept demeaning her hygienist in front of me, saying things like 'what's wrong with you today?' ' or 'UMMMMM did you just say 'D' it can only be 'DO' don't you know that!?' or just spurts of 'HURRY UP' 'COME ON' and 'UGGGHHH' - very unprofessional and downright rude. Finally, I was ready for my cleaning. Unexpectedly, I was handed a sheet of paper with my 'treatment plan' and today's expected charges.... for $233.80 out of pocket!! I told them I was there only for a cleaning and they said a few teeth needed a 'deep cleaning' and I would not benefit from a regular cleaning. I asked, 'Wouldn't all the teeth that don't need a deep cleaning benefit?' She said 'No' and refused to provide the standard treatment unless I paid for the extra. 2+ hours and no clean teeth. I went to their office last month, after buying their Groupon. I had to wait a few minuted given that I was a new patient, but the experience overall was a pleasant one. I got an X-Ray, cleaning, and had my teeth polished for $60 total. Marla, my hygienist, was personable and helpful. So was the doctor who saw me afterward. They even offered to polish my teeth free of charge before my wedding - I think I will take them up on that. read more

I visited Dr. Sowell upon the advice of a lady I sat next to on an airplane. I called first to make sure this dentist was in-network with my insurance, because I don't have a lot of moneys. I was relieved to learn I didn't have any cavities. Just an aside, I think switching to an all-natural toothpaste has helped (no particular brand)... I haven't had a cavity in two years, ever since making the switch. Anyway, the visit went so well, I decided to return for laser whitening. It cost $275, but I drink a lot of coffee, tea, wine, etc... so I thought it would be a good investment. They told me about Invisalign, but I've had two sets of braces in the past + was already spending a significant amount of money on the whitening procedure, so I wasn't interested in doing that right away. Maybe later, since some of my bottom teeth shifted from not wearing my retainer... now they have a procedure where, after you finish Invisalign, they can do something to make your teeth STAY in place, how cool is that? Which is why I might do it later on when I have more moneys. The staff is very kind, very concerned. I had a good experience with them. Dr. Sowell is wonderful. I admit the laser whitening hurt a lot more than I thought it would. In ads, it looks like a spa treatment... quick, painless, and you leave w/ a beautiful smile! However, I don't have sensitive teeth, or at least didn't think that I did... but toward the end of the laser treatment and for 24 hours following, I had sensitivity and shooting pains through my teeth, especially the front. They say people react differently to it, some don't experience anything. Ibuprofen helped, which is what they told me to take. I think I'll work hard to keep my teeth white (i.e., drink coffee through a straw or something, use maintenance whitening trays, etc.) to keep from having to endure that again. My visits here have been very positive. I have suggested to several of my friends already, as I feel they do good work and have a great attitude which goes a long way in my book. :) read more

I am very particular when it comes to my dentist. I am incredibly OCD when it comes to my teeth and have always taken a lot of time to decide on a dentist before I choose one. Dr. Coakley at So Well is fantastic as is the rest of the staff. I have been in for a routine cleaning, a filling (under a seal, nothing I could do!), to purchase new retainers and whitening gel. Everything I have gone to So Well for has been handled quickly, in a quality fashion with very little effort on my end. This is the type of dentist office I have always looked for and I will go stick with Dr. Coakley and the So Well office for as long as I live in Chicago. read more

I've never really like visits to the dentist, but I have been very pleased with the service at So-Well Dental office. The whole staff was very friendly and kind. I have a busy schedule, but they always find a way to work with me in terms of time for my appointments. I started with them last year for a cleaning, Marla the hygienist was very good at explaining the best way to keep my teeth clean and gums healthy. Dr So-Well was fantastic, very professional. HORRIBLE!!! I too purchased a Groupon. I got my teeth cleaning and they told me I had 6 urgent cavities and I had 3 filled there the next week. I was in horrible pain for the next week. She didn't grind down my bite correctly and told me to "wait a week". I came back a few days later and she ground it down more but it still was not accurate and she made my back tooth into a weird point not resembling the way it was before. Finally I just took my x rays back and went to my original dentist and had him fix it a long with an additional cavity. He said the other two were refillings that would EVENTUALLY need to be filled but were not in fact immediately urgent! Also, they told me I grind my teeth, which is true, and that I needed a $500 mouth guard for night time. They did THE WORST job on this mouth guard. She did not tell me (which my real dentist did) that I had the option for hard or soft. They made me the hard one and stuck it in my mouth without having shaved it down properly and cut up my gums and made me bleed! I wanted to CRY! ALSO it wasn't even the Dentist fitting my guard it was the receptionist! In the end this was the worst, most uncomfortable and ill fitting mouth guard that I could possibly have gotten and upon numerous attempts STILL cannot actually fall asleep with it in. Total waste of $500 I did not have! I've seen other girls mouth guards for grinding and they are nice, I totally got a chop shop version. I got this groupon clearly because I thought it was a good deal. I thought I'd save a little money as I've been low on funds and I ended up spending more and getting an awful job done on my teeth. I've never actually written a yelp review before, although I've used yelp to find places to eat and movers and the like. I bought the Sowell groupon after being unemployed for a year. First, let me state that I take very good care of my teeth. I'm the girl who has floss on her keychain! No, I don't use it in public, but I have it available. The cleaning was fine. The digital x-rays were nice. The problem came afterwards, when the dentist (a meek little woman) and the bully office manager came over to talk to me about problems with my teeth. According to the bully office manager, I had 9 cavities in my mouth. NINE. The meek little dentist just nodded. I said, "No, no I don't." I know what a cavity feels like. I know what they look like on an xray. There was not one on the xray, much less 9 of them. Then, the bully office manager tells me that I must never floss my teeth because the buildup of toxic junk between my teeth was so ridiculously large. I looked at the bib they had on me and the floss they'd used - still on the tray in front of me - and said, "Are you talking to me? You're kidding me, right?" Bully office manager then goes on to tell me that I must not be flossing correctly. She then tells me that I should come back and, on my next visit after they fill all 9 of my non-existent cavities, they'll give me a quick lesson on how to floss between my teeth. Meanwhile, the meek little dentist is just there, looking miserable, probably realizing that she sold her soul to work at Sowell Associates to pay off her dental school bills and has to just stand buy while the OFFICE MANAGER/RECEPTIONIST tries to bully patients into procedures they don't need. I walked out after telling them to never contact me again and that I think they might all want to lay off the sauce or get vision insurance if they think my teeth had 9 cavities (all of which were too small to appear on the x-rays, mind you). Some months later, I again had dental insurance and I went back to my old dentist. Let me be clear here: I love him and nothing, nothing will ever come between us again. I asked him about the possibility of me having 9 cavities and he said there was absolutely no way. When I asked about the possibility of me having 9 cavities that were too small to show up on x-rays, he said that is the whole point of taking x-rays! Fast forward to 2013, and Sowell Dental Associates has the nerve to call me and tell me in a chastising manner that I need to come in and take better care of my teeth. In no uncertain terms I told them they are 1) full of crap 2) had better never ever call me again 3) the worst kind of dentists out there. If I had more time on my hands, I'd file a complaint with the licensing board that oversees dentists in Illinois. Instead, though, I'll just post this on yelp. read more

Well being that I already wrote a post about So Well and it unfortunately was taken down/deleted, I figured I would re-write something real quick. I have been a patient at so-well for about 4 years now. I've done everything from maintenance on my teeth, 6 month cleanings, a few fillings and I also did the Invisalign treatment which is now over and have been doing the Vivera retainers for about 2 years this upcoming October. The reason I did Invisalign was because I did have braces in my early teens but my teeth shifted towards the end high school and I really did have an emotional distress about my teeth. I hated them and was extremely disappointed on never wearing my retainers. Kids, young adults and/or anyone who has had/currently are wearing braces, wear your retainers because keeping that retention is necessary! So Well truly did amazing work with my teeth and I have gained my confidence back. One of the first things people say positive about me are my teeth. I take pride in that so again, I thank them for that. I love the staff and they really do care about there patients.I love all of the personal touches they put on my visits. I also have a job where my schedule changes quite a bit ranging from last minute meetings and also travel. So Well does a superb job of accommodating my appointment changes. Also, I am a Greek guy who is loud and loves to talk so my willingness to open up about everything in my life, personal and work, is sound. They listen. They understand and do an excellent job! Kudos to you So Well Dental employees and I will continue to keep going here. I urge people looking for a dentist to really think about going here! read more

It's really unfortunate that the previous reviews shown on yelp do not talk about how amazing this place is! The staff are super friendly and I would argue that they are the friendliest dental staff that I've ever encountered! It is without a doubt that Dr. Sowell truly cares about her patients; she's very kind and willing to work under difficult circumstances. I came here the first time with a Groupon, and returned to have cavities filled. I was very happy with the work by Dr. Sowell (or as happy as I can be to have cavities filled!). All staff members have been consistently polite and friendly. Plus, I have never actually had a female dentist before, so this was a pleasant change for me. I went there and they were trying to sell me a bunch of stuffs that were optional but they made it sounded like necessary. For example, they told me that I need to do the bone graft for wisdom tooth extraction; otherwise, it will caused serious problem. I went to another clinic to get the second opinion and found out that bone graft is an optional thing. I received a call from medical loan company and told me that I wanted to apply for loan, which I was shocked because So Well told me that they input my information to just show me the loan offer by they won't send any information to the medical loan company. If there is any negative rating, I will definitely add here. I also recommended you get second option before you make your decision so you won't get unnecessary charge. read more
