I had a very pleasant experience at Modern Dental on Division today. Went in for the second half of my deep cleaning and for two fillings. The dental hygienist Devon was absolutely amazing. She was super friendly, professional and caring. She made sure I was comfortable and that I felt no pain doing the procedure. She was very thorough. After she was done it was a very warm transfer to Dr. Ciullo. She was also very friendly, professional and caring. She asked how the deep cleaning went and then explain what was going to happen next. She did the fillings and also ensure that it was a painless procedure. I am not one to like going to the dentist but they really made this procedure a great experience Thank you so much for the great care. I highly recommend Modern Dental!!!! read more

PLEASE READ! I was a patient at Modern Dental for almost four years and always saw Dr. Amy, who was wonderful. I never had any issues with her care. Unfortunately, after she left, my experience completely changed. The new dentist told me I needed a crown on a molar that had never given me pain or problems. I asked if she could simply refill the existing cavity instead. During the appointment, after drilling halfway through my tooth, she insisted a crown was necessary--leaving me with no real choice at that point. About a year later, during a routine cleaning, I was told I needed yet another crown. That's when I knew something wasn't right. I requested my x-rays and sought second opinions from two independent dentists. Both confirmed that I did not need a crown on that molar--or the other one that now has a crown. I was furious. While Dr. Amy was there, I never had a conversation about needing a crown. I take excellent care of my teeth, and my oral health has only improved over the years with her guidance. It became clear that this practice was pushing unnecessary procedures, likely because I have good dental insurance through my job--they often commented on how "great my insurance was." Needless to say, I stopped going to Modern Dental. It's clear that this practice focuses on profit over patient care. Shame on you Modern Dental. Maybe only a legal malpractice action will make them stop pushing unnecessary procedures. I hope potential patients are cautious and do their own research. read more

We have been with this dental office for a bit now. These past two years I feel like it's been going down hill the office in Logan square is our main offfice there are other locations also. Dr, Chen was the best I was very upset when I heard he left. They brought new Dentists which are nice but weren't like dr Chen, the front desk lady the one with the "bun" used to be so nice and pleasant now she looks like she doesn'twant to be there and she doesn't even say hi and talk to you anymore she used to be so cheeery! Now The girl I believe is the office manager at the division location is so rude not a very nice person she's gives attitude too. Also it seems like they can't keep their workers because I see new people infront and in the back, our family has decided to change dentists because of this. TL:DR: Every time I've gone in, I've left with a worse issue. It started with a cavity I needed filled and a deep cleaning, which they scheduled me back to back appointments to get taken care of. Filling the cavity was taking longer than they anticipated for some reason, which meant I was running late to the deep cleaning, which led to the dentist rushing. In the rush, something wasn't done well or wasn't done correctly because when I went back less than a year later for a cleaning, a cavity had formed BEHIND the filling. It completely destroyed my tooth, which meant I needed to get a root canal which cost me well over a thousand dollars (even after insurance). At one point during the root canal, the assistant pushed that foam block they use to keep your mouth open so far in that it made my jaw pop. The assistant actually gasped and quickly pulled the block back out a bit, but obviously the damage was done. I have severe jaw issues now to the point where sometimes I can't even chew - I have to mash my food with my tongue (I wish I was exaggerating or being hyperbolic). When I told them about this, they said the pain must be from grinding my teeth at night and they wanted to sell me a custom mouthguard. Less than a year after that, the crown fell out. I only went back to them because they would glue it back in for free. During this process, they took an X-ray of what was left of the real tooth and told me there's a shadow there now that they're concerned about. They said it wasn't there last time, but when they were showing me the older X-rays vs. the new ones, I pointed out to them that it was actually was there before, just not as pronounced. So they missed something that they're now telling me may lead to more serious issues that they're not able to treat - they had to give me a referral for a specialist. And now I'm here just a few months after that, and the crown has fallen out again. I'm just so frustrated and, honestly, really scared. I feel like they've sentenced me to a never ending cycle of dental and health issues, which not only are painful, but also expensive to treat. And all because they didn't want an appointment to run behind. read more

I had many old aluminum fillings that had chipped and some of my teeth looked cracked. Dr. Rayan was very detailed and saw me prior to giving me treatment plans. Additionally she and the team were careful to shit the door and turn up the music to help with anxiety with the sound of drilling. She is amazing with the numbing!!! Never had a dentist numb only the area and have fillings or crowns be painless until her!!! read more

Went in for a consultation. Their website shows they do cosmetic and tooth extractions. I found however, they do not do this but refer you out to an oral surgeon. This is just the "basic" dentistry. To add to that, during the x-ray assessment, the assistant jammed the Xtray sensor deep into my gums causing it to swell and bleed. It's been three days now and I'm still in pain. I have not had good experiences here unfortunately. Like a lot of others noted, the fillings do not last long. I had 4 fillings done here and they told me they all needed redone 6 months later. They were going to charge me until I complained that I shouldn't be charged since they all came out so quickly. The dentists are also are not very friendly or informative, they don't talk you through anything they are doing, and I don't think I've ever had the same dentist twice. I would highly recommend going elsewhere. I got a consult at another dentist and they said I didn't even need the fillings replaced that Modern dental was trying to charge me for. read more

Run away, don't walk. Every single procedure I had done here (both locations) needs to be redone. Insurance will not cover the replacements because not enough time has passed. Needless to say this is not only extremely expensive but also very painful. For instance, a crown was sealed incorrectly because either the incorrect cement was used or the tooth was wet but either way it was leaking bacteria and I developed a severe gum infection not only did the crown need to be replaced but I had to have gum work done as well, so what could've been a small fix, became a huge to do. I have been going to a doctor there who has now left the clinic. I went back for a check up with the new doctor they provided and it was only when I was leaving did they tell me this new doctor is not in network and I need to pay. However, my insurance portal online said it is in network and they said the clinic director is but not the doctor. When talking to the insurance they said the clinic has not updated their insurance status since 2012 and should no longer say that. When asking the clinic to correct the issue they said they didnt do anything wrong. So unhelpful and rude. read more

I found this dental office on Yelp about 3 years ago. It was close to my place and they have evening and weekend appointments available - score! I waited to leave a review until I had a few trips to the office and I must say, this place is great! Everyone is super friendly and I never felt pressured into spending more. They actually always complimented my teeth and made me feel really good. I generally came for my normal cleaning and check up every 6 months. This process was also so easy! They called me every 6 months as a reminder to come in and they always had appointment available within a reasonable amount of time. Recently I did opt for some whitening treatment. I decided to get the trays made so I could do it at home. It was a really quick process and I even got them sooner than expected. I definitely recommend choosing Modern Dental! read more

There is so much wrong with this place. It's wildly overpriced, the customer service is abhorrent, and it is clearly based on trying to scam, unwitting customers with unnecessary dental expenses. I was scammed twice with unnecessary deep cleaning. Also, I would not recommend going to this location if you are a person of color. After long conversation with my White husband who also was a customer at this location, I realize that as a woman of color, I was being treated much more poorly than him. At my last visit, the hygienist flat out refused to clean my teeth unless I paid for a $1200 deep cleaning, which would have been the second in just a few years. When I finally went to a more reputable dentist, I was told that I did not need any of the treatments that modern dental had forced upon me and it was clearly a scam. This place constantly reschedules appointments. Every time I've had an appointment they have called or text to change the time which when it was convenient, I did. You'd think they'd understand if a patient had an emergency and needs to reschedule. But Nope. I was pressured into an expensive deep cleaning when I haven't had a cavity in over 20 years. They would not do my standard insurance covered cleaning unless I got their 700$ deep clean first. So...I got the deep cleaning (the young lady who did my deep cleaning was great and professional, so this post is no reflection upon her) I had a follow up appointment, which I needed to reschedule for personal reasons. So I called upon receiving my confirmation or cancellation text literally like 10 seconds after - only to be told that if I reschedule I would be charged 49$. I told receptionist that Im not cancelling, I just need to reschedule as something had come up, I tried to explain things to her and let her know that I thought that was unreasonable as they are constantly changing appt times...show a little reciprocity ya know...and she said there was nothing she could do, I would still be charged. So I said you can go ahead and charge me but that will be the last dime you get from me, because I will no longer be coming here. Seemed like she's heard that often, can't imagine why. This office does not care about their patients and are just looking for ways to charge you as much as possible, pressure you into expensive procedures etc. I'd highly recommend a second opinion or different dentist altogether. Like others here-my wife also had an issue with insurance coverage and payment. Honestly the entire experience dealing with this office has been a nightmare. she was told her crowns would be covered, had the work done, then received a bill where they were not being covered. After many frustrating phone calls to insurance and their office- turns out they actually were covered. They had made a mistake. Absolutely horrible customer service, snotty receptionists, over billing, pressuring patients into expensive procedures, but a beautiful office with large screen TVs. I don't care how nice your office is when you treat patients and people like crap and try to milk them for every cent you can. It's a no for me. I will not be going back. My experience was just the straw that broke the camels back, we were already irritated. Called to make an appointment for a dental cleaning with my insurance through Metlife. The receptionist said they accepted this insurance as an in network provider and I proceeded to book an appointment. Once My cleaning was complete they wanted me to pay out of pocket because they said I was only covered at 80% as out of network. I was extremely upset because if there is certain dentists that cover me at 100% why wouldn't the receptionist book me with them as I asked?? Or let me know in advance that my appointment would only be covered at 80%. At that point I paid $70 out of pocket when it should be covered completely. I said I wanted an emailed receipt and I never got it. Instead I got an email about how my appointment was. I call in today and I'm still waiting for my receipt. Called a second time and they said I will receive it by the end of the day. This takes 1 second but the staff is holding it hostage. I will never come here again. make sure you are covered at 100% before you go!!!!!! Seems like they just want to book you so they can receive money and not care what the patient has to pay. Dr. Palella is very loud. If you're up for a blustery day and bad crowns, this is your place. My crown was never right, always hurt. In 6 months and 3 additional visits, no improvement, and lots of excuses from him. The reason is that it was too big, pressed down on the gums around it and the bite was never exact - btw, it was the second crown they created because the first one never fit. I eventually went to another dentist who was shocked by the shoddy work. I also had an infection. Antibiotics and a new crown and all is great! read more

Poor overall service and a lack of care for their patients. In a healthcare setting, especially when someone is taking care of you physically, that's the number one trait you want to see in your provider and this place is severely lacking it. There was confusion on healthcare insurance coverage since we recently switched providers, instead of waiting a few minutes to check, we were charged for a service only to find out later the service wasn't covered. When asking as a follow up as to why this happened, a ton of excuses were given to say they were busy and putting the blame on us as the patient. Please avoid this place. Their argumentative nature and lack of care for their patients is not something you want from someone who's going to stick their hand in your mouth. The proof is in the one star reviews. Read them!! I just had my second visit to Modern Dental and so far, so okay. My first visit was just for a routine check up and cleaning. My initial thoughts were that I liked that I had the ability to fill out the introductory paperwork online well before my visit, and I also liked that they had good follow up/reminder procedures (both by phone and email). When I got there, the receptionists and dental hygienists were very nice and seemed to know what they were doing. The office is also clean and bright, and everything looks acceptably disinfected, so minimum expectations were met. Before I get to the thing that I didn't like, I'll say one more thing that I did: when it turned out that I needed a more extensive follow-up procedure (a cap), the receptionist was able to calculate total future charges, apply my insurance, and give me a statement of what my out-of-pocket costs would be then and there. This was great, because it's always been a mystery to me why some doctors/dentists seem unable to provide an out-of-pocket estimate, which is really the only thing that I (and I think most insured patients) actually care about. Negatives-- I did feel like the dentist tried to up-sell me on procedures (e.g., a deep cleaning when my regular cleaning only took 10 minutes; two cavities that were apparently so microscopic that they didn't show up on either x-rays or with the dental camera). This is one of the things that really gets under my skin when it comes to people who are supposed to have professional credibility. Because unnecessary medical procedures are lucrative, sure, but they are unnecessary... medical... procedures. And I don't want to pay for stuff I don't need, you know? Especially dental stuff, which is not really the most fun way to spend a Saturday morning. read more

Though I've seen different hygienists and dentists every other time, everyone is extremely professional and personable. I initially started going here because my prior dentist was seemingly stuck in the previous century and Modern Dental has lived up to its name, for me. I most recently had Devin as my hygienist and she was excellent. And I had an insurance change since my last appointment, but forgot about it, and the staff was so amenable and understanding. They don't make you feel as if you are a bad person, because you procrastinate things that you know are going to suck. Like Root Canals for example! I had to have a couple. Dr. Wong knocked them both out in one visit in under 1 hour 25 minutes. Most places its multiple visits and hours for one. Not here ladies and gents. Also, I love deals. And after shopping around for quotes on everything i've had done here, you cannot beat their prices in Chicago guaranteed. Not that they guarantee it, but I can, and at this point you'll just have to trust me. I'm writing this review almost two years later, and I haven't had any problems with all the work I have had done here. And trust me and my insurance/bank account when I say i've had WORK DONE. BEWARE of the deep clean scam. I sent two of my family members there and they charged a ridiculous bill for a "deep clean" service -- one of which has never had a cavity in their life. I've been going here for years and am very disappointed with the customer service. I will be changing dentists because who knows what else they are adding to your bill. After you go in to see them, you can't get another free, preventative cleaning through your insurance for 6 months because they charge your initial consultation as that service. read more

HORRIBLE!!!. I have had 4 appointments with this location, and every time they have asked me to reschedule the time I come in. Today I came in for a follow up after my deep cleaning, I was initially scheduled to come in and 1:30 pm. They moved my appointment to 12pm. I was running late I because my plan was initially to come in at 1:30 I have things to do. The dental higentist that I had DEBIN, was not careful at all 1 minute in I signaled her to stop I have super sensitive gums. She keeps going and ignored my pain. She keep going and she was hurting me I signaled her to stop again and she was upset that I did that. She Stated that she was in a hurry and we needed to keep going. I tried asking why my gums hurt so bad and she was like I don't have time for this. Are you kidding me? Then she Stated it was my fault because I was late, I let her know I did them a favor I came in over an hour earlier, she stated she is working 6 days a week and did not have time to deal with this. I left did not even complete my appointment because she completely disregarded that I was in pain. I'm sorry that you are working 6 days a week that is not my fault, I sympathize but don't take out your frustration on me. If she cannot handle all of the appointments why book so many appointments? read more

I've tried MANY dentists in the Chicago area over the past 8 years that I've lived here, and Modern Dental on Division is by FAR the best place to go! Some highlights: 1. They are extremely informative! I've never been much of a flosser until I came here the first time for a simple cleaning. I was so thoroughly educated that I started flossing at least once daily. I've noticed a huge improvement that I'm very happy about. In addition, I previously did not care to spring the money to buy an electric toothbrush, but after hearing specifics on the benefits, I bought one immediately! To make matters even better, the dental hygienist did not push the electric toothbrush the office sold on me (pricey!), but rather indicated I could buy one off Groupon for about $30 (instead of $100+), which is what I did. SO worth it. Thank you for that! 2. The office is extremely clean, modern, and professional. 3. You'll never lack for personal attention during your visit 4. You can book your visits online 5. They often have great specials, so sign up for those emails! 6. The dentists never try to push services or products on you that you don't necessarily need. I've been to several places that have tried to convince me to get a crown for my front tooth when I don't need one, etc. This won't happen at Modern Dental on Division. 7. Every employee is kind and helpful, whether it's a person working the front desk, a dental hygienist, a dentist, or anyone else in between. I just left here after having two wisdom teeth extracted and I have to say I've never had a better dental experience in my life! The dentist was very gentle and incredibly effective. I am terrified of visiting the dentist after years of bad experiences and this was a pretty flawless process. The entire procedure took less than 30 min from the time I sat down to leaving. Absolutely wonderful experience with Dr. Palella and his staff. This was my first visit today. I was greeted with genuine smiles and professionalism from the front desk to the Dr.'s Assistant. An impeccably clean office, (check the bathrooms as well), cleaner than most surrounding restaurants. I have found a new dentist and even though Modern Dental is 20 miles away, it's well worth the snail traffic of the loop for ten minutes once I hit downtown. Trust me, I am a big baby at the dentist--I want no pain, no pinch. After seven minutes max of drilling for my new crown, I didn't feel a thing during it all. This dentist knows what he wants and gets to the root of the problem, quickly and painless. No pun intended. read more

I've been a patient here for two years since moving from New York City. Modern Dental is hands down the best dentist I've even been to. The space is clean and relaxing, staff are kind and professional, and overall experience is quick and painless. What more could you ask for? The dental hygienist Britney is the absolute best. This is the best dental office I've been to, hands down. It's clean, modern, and has some nice little amenities: - Chargers for phones while you wait - Super nice seating area - Comfy dental chairs with personalized tvs I've been twice, and the service has been timely and spot on.The reception area is friendly, the hygienists are nice and effective, and the dentists I've seen have both been great. I had some drilling done this last time, and because I opted to not have any numbing, they checked in with me every few seconds to make sure I was okay. Very gentle and definitely got the job done. They also worked super hard to make sure my bite was back to normal before I left, so I appreciated the attention to detail. I'm so glad we found this place! I usually never yelp about doctors or dentists' office, but I had an experience at Modern Dental that I felt required comment. I went there with a Groupon last summer for a teeth cleaning while I was between jobs. Nice enough experience and they gave me what I wanted, just a cleaning. They called me several times for a second appointment six months later and, as I'd gotten a new job and had insurance, I decided to give them another chance. I went in early on a Saturday morning for my second cleaning and experienced several instances of unprofessional behavior. Everyone behind the counter was nice and professional but my problems began when I got back to the diagnostic area. The dental technician told me, not asked, "we're going to be taking some x-rays." They didn't x-ray me at all when I was lowly unemployed groupon holder, but, whatever, I thought. I've had it done before and it'll just take a minute. He put at plastic bit in my mouth and went back to take the x-ray. Problem: he didn't prepare the machine BEFORE he put the bit in my mouth. I don't have a strong gag reflex but if you put a PIECE OF PLASTIC in my mouth for more than three minutes I will gag. i did this twice while he was prepping the machine. It took upwards of three minutes to take the first x-ray. The guy didn't even apologize for not having the machine ready. While all of this was going on a LOUD argument was happening in the chair next to me between a dentist and her patient. The back of the house is just three chairs divided by non-load-baring drywall partitions that don't reach to the ceiling so you can hear everything going on with the other patients. I thought it was uncool for doctor-patient confidentiality. Anyway, this dentist was arguing - for at least half an hour - with her patient about a course of treatment involving wearing a bite guard at night.. The dentist said she needed to try it for two weeks and the patient was saying it didn't work for her. Why is anyone else hearing this? Anyway, the dental technician left for awhile after my x-rays and then the dentist, I think it was the same one that was next door but she NEVER introduced herself, came in and examined me. After asking the regular questions she told me, not asked, that I would need a crown over some old dental work. Full disclosure: I loved my old dentist and would STILL be going to him if he was in my new health plan's network. He did a great job on that tooth and we both agreed it was better to save the tooth than crown it. It worked fine the way it was, I have ZERO pain in it and there is no reason to crown it. This "plan of treatment" smacked, to me, of trying to sell unnecessary services. Why crown a tooth that has no problems and is functioning fine? I said as much and then, and this is where it gets weird, THE DENTIST shrugs and starts scraping my teeth. Isn't that a job normally done by a dental hygienist? At one point she said to another dentist "do I have to floss and polish, too?" The other dentist said no, the only reason she had to scrape was because so and so called in sick and that some other person would floss and polish. Why are you discussing this stuff in front of the patient? The guy who made me gag on the x-ray bit then came and in and polished and flossed me. He didn't even floss my back teeth, either, and then I was done. Then on Monday, get this, they have an office person call and ask me when I wanted to schedule the crown for! I TOLD them in the office that I had no problem with my natural tooth and didn't want the crown! I'm giving them one star only (it would have been two if not for trying to sell me an unnecessary procedure). Aside from ignoring my back teeth with the floss, it was a decent cleaning but MY GOD are they ever disorganized! And trying to sell an unnecessary procedure is just plain unethical. There is no way I'm going back to Modern Dental. read more

I have never been given the run-around this bad in my life. I had a very pleasant experience with this place when I first reviewed it back in 2011. The staff and Dentists there were excellent. In 2012 things changed over there, some of the staff were the same but all of the dentists changed. This place is like a crooked auto repair shop. I was told by new dentist #2 that i needed work that new dentist #1 had performed in the SAME office 6 months prior. Dentist 2 even told me, without asking where i had previous dental work done, that whoever and wherever I had received treatment from did a really poor job. Not only did this clown step on his own tongue, he also let the cat out of the bag that he wanted to double bill my insurance company! He wanted to drill and fill a tooth that i had a root canal performed on a year prior, again at the SAME place! After seeking a second opinion, my suspicions were confirmed, dentist #2 was full of it and my root canaled (?) tooth was just fine. It's hard to find an honest dentist these days. This place is an insurance billing factory. I really dont think they care about their patients or their oral health. read more

The only reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because I have been here about 5 times already, and while I have received friendly staff and quality dental work.... there are several things that bother me. Let's start off on a positive note: Dr. Wong was pretty awesome and helped me with two major teeth issues. It was pricey but normal for the amount of work I was getting done. The staff, overall, is friendly. Customer service is important and they have that down pat. The first few times that I went there I had met a couple of the employees and everyone seemed very nice. Now, "nice" is wonderful, but stupidity is unforgivable. There is one girl who works at the front desk who has consistently screwed up one thing after another for me. This is such a shame because I really think that everyone else has their act together over there. But this one chick has seriously made me walk out of the office feeling really pissed off and frustrated, multiple times. The first time it involved lack of communication between her and the dentist. I had paid for my services in advance. Then she told the dentist what I was in for, but she failed to tell him that a crown was a part of the list of things that I needed. Crowns are friggen expensive!!! How are you going to forget to mention that I just paid $500 out of pocket for a crown?!?! (Come on, people!) Then another time, she quoted me $187 for a buildup fill in and told me that my insurance should cover about $100 of the total. So after I finished my appointment, I get to the front desk and she tells me that my bill is $187. I immediately asked how that was possible when she had just finished telling me that my bill was going to be around $87 dollars. She quickly got out her calculator and realized that she was wrong. Had I not have said something, I would be out $100. SO ANNOYING!!!! I hate to get all sassy about one person ruining it for one pretty fantastic business, but that's just how it goes sometime. I can understand making a mistake once in a while, but there seems to be consistent mistakes happening. It's enough to make me want to reconsider dentists....which is a shame. read more

I have had two cleanings and a filling at this place. I should have been worried the first time when the female dentist didn't know the hygienist's name as she was very new and inexperienced. Lot's of gum poking and when I left my teeth were ultra sensitive. The next time I was in six months later, new inexperienced hygienist who seemed even younger than the previous one but the same female dentist. This time I needed a small filling. After suffering a few weeks of increasing pain, I had to come in and get the filling ground down as it was messing with my bite. If you do go in, make sure to ask for them to turn off the television in the exam area. I was forced to sit through 40 minutes of the Today Show that both the dentist and hygienist were obviously listening to. The last thing that you want is someone poking around in your mouth and then careening over their shoulder to look at a TV. My wife had a similar poor experience there where she cracked a tooth and had to get a root canal. After the first root canal didn't stop the pain she got a second opinion and it was the unrepaired tooth next to it that needed a root canal. The way it was cracked, it was highly unlikely that the original tooth had any issues. She had a much better experience down the street at East Village Dental. read more

I started out as a Groupon customer, and chose Modern Dental because it was located near my home. I ended up staying for about 2 years before I moved on. Turns out Groupon and proximity to home are not good reasons to select your dentist. Here is where MDD lost me as a customer: 1. The tvs that are supposedly for the patients are actually for the dentist and hygienist. For example, during one appointment the dentist and her assistant chatted about the program playing on the tv throughout the appointment. I remember feeling like they were distracted, and sure enough, the dentist didn't even out my tooth properly which meant that I had pain whenever I chewed on that side of my mouth. I had to wait months to come back in and get it fixed. Every appointment was like that - nobody ever asked if I wanted to watch something because the dentist or whoever had to catch Shark Tank regardless of whether I wanted to watch it at all. Can you do your job effectively while watching tv? What makes you think your dentist can? 2. I made the mistake of mentioning that one of the reasons I left my old dentist was because the hygienist was too rough (in fairness, she was a psychopath). Modern Dental's response was to take the opposite approach and basically do the functional equivalent of tickling my gums with a feather. I never came out of there feeling like my teeth were clean. 3. They always tried to upsell me on fluoride treatments, even though all sorts of studies show adult teeth don't absorb flouride treatments and they're not effective. I finally had enough and picked out a dentist with a good reputation and am happy to report that my teeth are actually clean again. I don't have to suffer through a half hour of squawk box each time I go in and my teeth actually have the dentist's undivided attention. All that being said, I had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Palella, but I didn't get him very often. read more

My pearly whites are finally white again :). Had my first appointment today with Dr. Palella and it was a great experience all around. I downloaded my new patient paperwork from the Modern Dental website and faxed it in earlier this week so when I arrived at 8am, I was ushered right in without a wait. Like most people have written, it's been a NUMBER of years since I've gone to the dentist and Dr. P was cool as ice about it. (I've been to some dentists that will really give you a hard time...jerks!) The office is very clean and modern, easy to find, etc...anywyay, there aren't any rooms - each chair is separated by a very contemporary looking hutch that holds the x-ray machine - even though you can pretty much hear everything going on, I felt like the set up still gave each person enough privacy to get their teeth cleaned in peace. I even had a nice little flat screen to watch - I was never offered a remote...but I'll let that slide this time. Dr P is a trip. I'm pretty sure he's the only dentist at the practice. Nicest guy, moves around like the energizer bunny, seems very smart and is definitely all about fixing issues as soon as possible. If you have a question, ask it. He will give you more info than you ever needed or wanted to know. I had my x-rays, got cleaned, got a quote on how much it would cost to pull the rogue tooth, and got the sucker pulled - all in an 90mins. I was only in Chicago for only one day during the holidays, and they were very accommodating to reschedule me because I could not make my original appointment (now I know why). I bought a groupon for a general cleaning, and was also considering the whitening service. I was told xrays were included, and they were part of the exam. After the xrays, I was told I needed a deep cleaning a scaling, and since I did not have insurance I would get a "special price." They told me that they could not just do a general cleaning because that would be "male practice"! Long story short, I left the office with NO cleaning and an estimate for $1800 worth of dental work. I have had deep cleaning done the time before last, and feel this is just a way to upsell, but should be a choice. I take good care of my teeth, and they are in pretty good shape. Funny thing is the very next day I was in LA and was visiting another dentist for whitening with another groupon I bought ($169 vs the $299 special groupon price at modern) and they gave me a very good cleaning before hand no problem, and for a great price! Also, they told me they could fix my filling that Modern wanted to cap for alot more money.' I see many good reviews for them,but I honeslty feel that groupon is just a way to get people in the door and the "upsell". Since I had to take a taxi there and back from across the city with nothing done... what a complete waste of time and money! read more

I already knew It was time to find a Dentist in Chicago, as its now been two years since my last appointment and the "I just moved" excuse isn't really working anymore, so when I got a tiny chip in my front tooth I wanted to find someplace close that could get me in quickly. The office was clean and modern. My favorite part was when Dr. Palella showed me my x-rays on the TV screen and then my cavities (whoops!) so I could see what he was talking about, not just accept that what he was telling me was true. It kind of feels like you are at a hair salon for teeth because each dentist chair is in a quasi-open cubicle of sorts, but I guess they must not make anyone scream or else the whole office would hear! I've already been in to get my cavities filled and front teeth "filed" and it was quick, painless AND I got to watch Ellen while it was performed. I'm definitely glad I randomly chose this dentist office. read more

I have been coming to this dentist office for 4 years, as long as I've lived in the area. The office is clean and modern, and I LOVE that they have TVs at every chair. Gives you something to do other than stare at the wall while you are waiting and while they are poking around in your mouth. I've seen several different dentists there, and I actually am not sure if I have a dedicated dentist, but that doesn't bother me. It's always really easy to get an appointment and they have extended evening and Saturday hours so it's always convenient. I am not always super anxious to get my cavities filled, but it's nice to know I can just get them over with ASAP! read more

First off I want to say that I TRY to take care of my teeth as best as I can and I actually enjoy going to the dentist and learning about my teeth and dental care. However, my experience at Modern Dental was just plain bad. Things started out great, my wait time was not long but things got sour once I was called in. The dental hygienist was pleasant but while taking x-rays, I couldn't close my mouth and keep the mouth piece in my mouth (a problem I never seemed to have before). I don't know if their equipment is bigger or shaped differently but it was not working. When I expressed my pain to the hygienist and stated "I can't do this," she immediately snapped and said "honey, you have to." Um excuse me but I am a grown man and don't have to do anything I don't want. I should have left right after this but pulled through and the x rays were done. Right after we were done with that, she immediately stated something along the lines of, I already see about 6 cavities so don't be surprised if the dentist sees more, I'm telling you this so you can be prepared. I was BEYOND shocked by this statement but kept my cool and figured I had slacked on my dental care and gave her the benefit of the doubt. Also, I had started using toothpaste without fluoride and when I told her this, since I thought this was the reason for the insane amount of cavities she saw on my x rays, I felt humiliated and judged. She immediately tried to sell me on this fluoride treatment and I caved due to being so concerned about my SIX cavities. Once the hygienist finished my cleaning (which did not seem like a proper cleaning) and fluoride treatment, the dentist stepped in for 0.5 seconds. She said I had 2, yes, TWO cavities that we needed to take care of. At this point I was both relieved and fuming on the inside not only because the hygienist lied to me but because I did not see the dentist I had scheduled my appointment with, this was some random dentist that is not even on the website. The only dentist on their site is Dr. Palella, but that is not the dentist that saw me. I asked the hygienist that I thought my dentist was going to be Dr. Palella and at this point my only concern was if my insurance would cover this random dentist that came in to see me, she assured me it would cover and that was it. The front desk lady was nice but tried to charge me for 2 previous missed appointments. However when I called to make this appointment I was told I would not be charged for the 2 previous appointments unless I missed this 3rd appointment. That is when I knew I would never return to this place again. I am sticking with my dentist of over 10 years, I tried Modern Dental to try something different but sometimes sticking with the old is good. My old dentist found ONE cavity which has been taken care of and now I am relieved. At Modern Dental I didn't even get a goodie bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, just anxiety and concern over false information! read more
