Found this amazing gem of a dive bar in the most unexpected places: smack dab in the middle of Brooklyn Chinatown (Sunset). As per the bartender / historical docent, Brian, informed us: this bar has been around since 1930s during the prohibition days. It's seen many different eras and has morphed from its roots as a Norwegian bar to an Irish bar, to an Irish bar that caters to Mexicans, to one that now caters to Chinese as the neighborhood demographics changed around it. A charming place and lots of history. For example the regulars are called "Chirish" as they are ethnically Chinese but their love of Guinness and Irish anti-English songs have infused them with Irishness. Love that!! Brooklyn Chinatown is only getting bigger and with that, 8th Avenue continues to stretch longer and longer with Chinese businesses as far as the eye can see. Situated right near the 8th Ave N train stop is the Soccer Tavern, an old school, low profile bar, which happens to be one of the *only* non-Asian drinking holes in the area. Upon first glance, this is a locals spot. Subtle, yet quiet in its own right. I haven't ever seen a rowdy crowd here in all of my visits and the clientele usually an older bunch. Everyone seems to have the same goal in mind, knock a few drinks back while taking it easy. It's pretty amazing what a departure this place is from the rest of the hood, it's as if you're not in Chinatown at all. The place is seedy, somewhat unkept, and quiet small. A couple of TVs hanging from the corner, along with just enough room for a couple of tables and some dart boards. The bar itself isn't big enough for more than 8 bodies at a time and the drinks are reasonably priced. The bartender, who might also be the owner, is a nice guy who knows how to make a mean drink. Once a old mainstay, it's now serving as a cool alternative to all of the karaoke bars and trendy nightlife places. Soccer Tavern still has a pubby charm about it, one that I hope doesn't go away anytime soon. read more

Then met their wife Kate and kids, this family knows how to host a Bar. They take care of you, and monitor you. They follow all rules of the SLA, other than that i don't know what to say. I love love love weird, divey old man bars. And you can't get much more weird, divey old man-ish than Soccer Tavern. I came here at around 11 or 12 on a Sunday when I needed a place to wait for a friend to meet me for dim sum. I honestly don't think they were even officially open. There were a few obvious regulars and CMT was playing on the TV. Sixpoint was 5 bucks, the bartender was sweet and eavesdropping on the regulars - all obvious Sunset Park lifers - was the best part of it all. read more

This is the bar that started my drinking habits =D I come here with a group of my friends when I'm trying to get away from over crowded places. Siobhan (bartender) is a sweet heart and I love her. The regulars all know me and theyre fun to be around. It's right in Brooklyn's chinatown, so of course there are plenty of old drunk asian men in there. ( they have nick named me Mamma Mia) It's not trendy. It's low key. Inexpensive. And a good hiding place. I'm not a regular like I use to be, but it's where it all started for me. read more

After reading a few good reviews, I decided to give this place a shot. That was a bad call. The bar felt crammed with only a few people in it. Some patrons smoked on the patio and made the whole place stink of cigarette smoke. A very very limited selection of draft beer. The atmosphere was dreadful and past the point of being "divey" or "low key"... it was just a shit hole. There was the dart board, but I don't go to bars to play darts, I go to drink. read more

Days when you find a place like Soccer Tavern make you feel like a real New Yorker. This is an old-school Irish watering hole that has adapted to a totally reshaped neighborhood demographic, managed to embrace that change, while also losing none of it's roots or charm. The clientele is now 50/50 Irish/Chinese, 90% male, who get along swimmingly because they have 2 important things in common - beer and gambling on the ponies. Hmm - I don't know where Yelp gets their locations, but this is definiteIy Sunset Park. This is an interesting divey bar (but not gross or dirty) with interesting character. When I was there, there was a combination of the following: -guys sleeping at the bar -chinese guys with their $1 meat sticks that they just got outside -a group of university kids that continually went to the back porch to smoke -a few irish locals watching the game -the smell of smoke in the air -a lot of single drinkers at the bar The guiness is cheap, the bartender is nice, and it has this really weird (in a good way) vibe that I love about these unique little places. If you are the search for a sports bar that isn't very sports bar like, or a non-annoying irish bar with a mix of locals from Sunset Park, this is it. If there was a book with strange bars, I think this should definitely be in the top 20. Really close to the N train in Sunset Park. Love the name, as no soccer seems to ever be on the TV's (a lot of horse racing and a lot of Asians). Walked in once by myself waiting for friends and thought I may never be seen again. Big ups to the free hero they offer inside, and the Buds they take out of a fridge that resembles one you'd find in your basement at home. The patio outside is littered with cigarette butts and has a grill from what I remember. I have never seen anyone cook on that though. Definitely a fun spot to take your friends for that authentic NYC bar feel. read more

Cheap everything. Darts. The customers range from friendly to minding their own business. Mostly locals/semilocals. A space outside with a tv, awning, table and chairs where you can do what you want. Ahh, The Soccer Tavern...or as I like to refer to is: 足球酒館, as it's in the middle of Chinatown in Sunset Park. The place is adorned with scarves of various legendary soccer teams like Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid...and, confusingly, Sparta Prague. But the beer and drinks flow... and flow. That's really why one goes there. The bartender, Shiobhan, quite the masochist, serves 'em until they become wild, wet beasts and then she's tasked with taking care of them. Along with the soccer scarves is a pay-phone and a juke box filled with what seems like 6 scratched cds. Pro Tip: The regulars love Jefferson Airplane. Other popular choices are 10 straight songs from The Doors. If that's not reason to lose one's mind I don't know what is. I personally believe what drove Jim Morrison to death was being forced to listen to the music of The Doors. And the patrons get that same feeling when a hooligan puts on The Doors, endlessly. Totally awesome. When I go (late afternoons), there are just regulars, I think. Everyone is nice and polite. Soccer is always on, but they won't jump down your throat if you talk about football. Once, I asked the bartender (the dude) what the trophies on the wall are for, and he said it was for their darts league. He went to explain that everyone is welcome here. Nice thought. I think he thought I am Chinese. I'm not (which most people think I am in this part of Brooklyn). Nevertheless, though I've only been here twice, I feel as comfortable as I do in my apt. I went tonight to the "Soccer Tavern" on 11/17/15 to watch the World Cup Qualifying game. The old hagged bartender with blonde mullet was very disrespectful who says she been working there for 9 nine years. I bought a beer and tipped and was watching the game. With 20 minutes left in the second half, she told me that i was not drinking and switched the large screen to basketball. She said that I would have to continue watching the game on the small screen. I did not respond and while walking out the door, she complained loudly to other patrons that I was not buying. In summary, I went to the spot as it is called "Soccer Tavern" and the rude bartender purposely switched to basketball. I will not be returning.
