I came here on a Friday night. My friends raived about this place and I thought it was going to be a great time. It was...for about 20 minutes. I was sitting at the bar when a man proceeded to come up to me and yell at me that I was in his seat. Something tells me if I was a man he would've thought twice. After much deliberation I gave up my seat. I can't believe it s 2024 and I still have to "give up my seat" for a man (a half n hour later mind you). If it was two minutes later and you politely said "hi I'm sorry I was sitting there" then yeah sure, maybe I wouldn't be so mad. Kitty's, aka the twilight zone! I say that because it has its own identity, unlike other bars in the area. I'm a big fan of the relaxed atmosphere that it has. The bartenders are always friendly, the beers are always cold and the toilet always flush!! Keep it up! read more

My friends and I went to Kitty Kiernan's recently,, as we had previously been last summer and had a great time (nice laid back vibe and even better espresso martinis). We were enjoying ourselves and showing it off to a friend who had never been, when a man aggressively approached us claiming we took his seat, "how long does a body have to be cold?".... He had left his drink on the counter, with a coaster on top of it, though not directly in front of his seat. He proceeded to basically just be beyond rude, with the staff standing idly by, to the point where we left. This recap doesn't do it justice just how bizarre this experience was, getting bullied by a 50 year old man in the neighborhood you were born and raised. I understand it may have put the staff in an awkward situation but it's safe to say I will not be back to this bar. read more

My wife and I went to the bar for the first time. We knew it was there bc of its Irish roots. We really realize that it was a dive bar once we entered. The two bartenders were very nice. I ordered the Guinness and my wife ordered Irish girl. Total: $14. I would go back if I need a late night beer. read more

This is a small, quiet bar. Great bartenders (in my experience). Unfortunately, racist banter among regulars is the norm. As previous Yelpers have noted, this is a rather divey establishment, but there is a certain atmosphere and personality that makes one want to become accepted. Some of the bartenders are a bit stiff and cold shouldered, but it is in keeping with the style of the bar, the patrons, and even the area. If you want to be greeted with a hug and have happy birthday sung to you, go to Applebee's, as Kitty's is not that - nor wants to be that. I've only been here a couple of times but I find that attempting to fit in by talking to the regulars and understanding one does not order foo-foo drinks or even wine (sure they have wine, but what part makes you think wine bar...) you will soon be accepted. It always amazes me how people can walk into an establishment one time and expect to be immediately treated as a valued customer. The regulars who the bartenders are lavishing their attention keep the doors open, not the one-off customer who pops in for a glass of wine and a turned up nose. You don't like it? Then move on. No one from here will complain, so why should you. Sorry for the rant. One last thing is their liquor pours are generous and their prices are very fair. If I were from here I would make this one of my regular stops and work hard to become recognized as a regular. read more

Shhh let me tell you a secret about this bar. Small taps of bud are $1. Regular pints of anything are 7-8 bucks. I'm no big fan of bud either but at this price who am I to complain. Friendly staff as well. And the hours can't be beat. When you want a $1 beer at 10 am, this is the place. read more

This is one of my favorite bars ever. Almost every person in my group of friend's has had his/her birthday here. This is also where I fell for my g/f (everyone go awwwww). This is a great, old, irish bar. They make the BEST Black & Tan here for only $6! Great choice of beer on tap from Guiness to Hoegaarten to Becks. The bartenders are always nice, especially James (owner?) who comes by round 2AM. Buy backs are common here as well! Lounge seating is all around, a classic jukebox and you can always pick up a dart game here easily although 5 of us always get sucked in to the touch screen games. Everyone who comes here knows that they're in for a chill time. This is not a place you come to for the dancing and guys/gals dressed to impress. This is a place to come to with a group of friends, talk/laugh the night away, smoke a pack of ciggs coming in and out of the bar, to have good drinks, meet random people and for squinting your eyes when you leave because before you know it....it's 5:30AM...time to head to Bridgeview Diner down the road! read more

Easily the divey-ist bar I've been in in Bay Ridge. I came here after my Irish Girlfriend recommended i wait here for her after express bus got stuck behind an accident (she is literally still in Manhattan). The prices are moderate on their bottles and their draft selection is Bud, Heineken, India Pale Ale, Guinness, Bud Light, Carlsberg, and Stella. The draft is literally so cold that they occasionally freeze. They also have liqueurs and spirits here as well. There doesn't seem to be much of a crowd here on a Monday, so if you do your drinking during the week (as any social worker does) this is a nice, quite, and most importantly clean bar for some conversation and cheap beer. read more

This place is decent for a night cap on any random weeknight. Most famous in my mind for a couple of scenes filmed here from Spike Lee's 25th Hour, with Ed Norton. Unbelievable street-scape that has this place being dwarfed by the Verrazano Narrows bridge. They used to have double swinging doors, like a wild west saloon, that would always leave you feeling like a gun-slinger when you walk in and out of here. (but alas, they are gone). Good jukebox. Sorry, I usually show up here after a night in the city, so a yelp about a place I hang out at from 2am-4am is tough. I liked it, plenty of room to walk around and great selections of beers. They include Zywiec, Guinness and Becks just to name a few. Walk outside for a smoke and you have a sick view of the Verrazano Bridge. Located close to other bars in Bay Ridge. Our evening started out fine and then turned sour when the owner (or manager?) entered the scene, as noted from previous reviews. I'd like to note that I lived in Bay Ridge several years ago, am a teacher in the area, and have been to this bar several times. We're 30ish professionals who act civilized at all times. All of this to say, we had spent at least four hours at the bar watching basketball and had dropped quite a large tab and were tipping well. We acknowledge we aren't "regulars", but we're friendly and never cause trouble. We kept to ourselves in the corner and my friend asked one of the bartenders if it was alright to order in food (since the bar has none). She said "Yes." So, we did. Earlier, as my friend went up to the bar to order, all the seated bar patrons chanted "Swing the lights!" and everyone began to do so. One person motioned to my friend to swing a light near his head and he smiled and politely reached up when the owner yelled, "NOT YOU! WE DON'T KNOW YOU!" Um....ok. You know how you GET to know someone at your bar? You act kind. We were immediately put off by this and the owner continued to glare at us in the corner while we bothered nobody. Then, our food arrives and the owner FLIES across to us yelling, "NO! NO FOOD!" I look confused and explain that we had asked the bartender, pointing to her, and he proceeds to motion me over to a handwritten sign on the walls of a dark entrance of the bar where it is scrawled "No outside food." I say we didn't see that sign and we had asked. I don't cause a scene. I say, "No problem, we'll eat outside." He continues to rant that someone once brought in Indian food and it reeked for weeks. Oh. Got it. Side note, a regular made a racist joke to us about Muslims while we were just sitting there watching basketball, not engaging anyone. We ate outside, finished watching the basketball game inside, and left. I'm a regular myself at several bars, and I gotta tell you, in order to keep a business going, you need fresh blood. We're young, nice to everyone, and respectful, even when you are not respectful to us and don't even BOTHER to apologize for the confusion with the bartender and the food. Also, yelling "WE DON'T KNOW YOU" doesn't add to the atmosphere. If you want to be a good business owner, open up your business to outside individuals other than your openly racist regulars. You might be surprised and meet someone interesting! They might tell their other friends about your bar! People might live in harmony! But, no, Kitty Kiernans seems to think it will survive by catering to their older, white clientele who commandeer the juke box with The Black Eyed Peas and other horrible techno music (read the room, folks). We will not be returning and I will be urging others in the neighborhood to do the same. read more

I have to admit that this 5 star score is not for Kiernans. When I lived in Brooklyn many years ago, the pub at this location (9715-3rd ave) was called M.T.Pockets. It was a great place and the wife (well girlfriend) and I went there in the 1970's. If Kiernans is half as good it'd be a nice place to drop in. This place is pretty divey. We came here to watch a hurling match, which was nice since it was the only place in the area showing it. The soda was flat and the drinks were below average, but it's what I expected from a dark Irish dive bar in Bay Ridge. Check it out if that's what you're in the mood for. My husband and I are new to the neighborhood and were looking for a laid-back neighborhood bar, we need not look further than Kitty Kiernans. Although we have only been here twice, both times we had so much fun we found ourselves not wanting to leave (sadly we can't drink like we use to). The bartenders are very friendly and attentive. The locals are also friendly and it was easy to strike up a (smart) conversation with them. (So I'm not sure what everyone is talking about when they call it "cliquey"). Honestly I found it very welcoming, a few people at the end of the bar even came over to welcome us to the neighborhood when they overheard us telling the bartender we just moved a few blocks away. I only come during the Thursday Open Mike's and its the best! Katrina is always the bartender when I'm there and shes a sweetheart. Great patrons, great atmosphere, great bar, and an amazing Open Mike on Thursdays with the best jam sessions ever! At the conclusion of the night, I quote one patron saying, "That's the most fun I've had in a long time and I just came from an Alicia Keys concert at MSG!" It's my favorite bar spot in Bay Ridge. There's a history to it. Always for a good time. And there are attractive bartenders.

My boyfriend and I like to come here every now and then for a few drinks, and the bartenders are usually nice women. However, this time the bartender was a young white brunette dude, and I ordered a wine which was clearly skunked and tasted bad. My boyfriend tried to return the drink to this bartender however instead of offering good customer service he tried a sip of my wine and stated "it tastes fine to me" and proceeded to refuse a supplement drink. Someone in management needs to teach this guy about how to treat a customer !!! You suck! read more

This pub is stumbling distance from my home and that is a VERY good thing. I love the atmosphere at Kitty's. The bartenders Margaret and Patricia definitely know how to make a strong drink.
