The service was top tier. Our waitress was nice and management stopped by our table (not because we complained) but because we were "1st timers". The menu was confusing, a lot of ingredients listed were unfamiliar to me. ‍ Our food was mediocre. Chips and Salsa were a paid appetizer. Portion of chips was not generous.

Not impressed from hello till the check. Water was gross. We told the waitress and she talked to her manager who replied that they've been getting that complaint all day. But did nothing to fix the issue or offer anything different. Pineapple Margarita was on point to drink since water was unavailable! Food was subpar. Our fault before we came because we thought it was real Mexican food and not a fancified version of things. One server helping the entire floor and outside is also super ridiculous. She needed more help so we weren't there for 3 hours.

    Nachos and Margarita

Went in Saturday between lunch and dinner. Had the nachos with chicken. They were phenomenal. You get a lot. Two ladies could only finish half the nachos together. So I would say 4 people can share as a meal! Chloe was our server, she was nice & we got our food and drinks fast.

Shrimp bowl. The oil k light in the room was intense. Photo not appealing at all.

We read the reviews and were cautiously optimistic. Many reviews complained about slow service, our server was attentive to our group of 4. Good drink and food choices. Our meals were good, maybe not exceptional but good. We ordered the burritos, gringo salad and the shrimp bowl. The burritos were okay, the salad skimped on lettuce and the shrimp bowl was very tasty. I'd go back, but not one of my top choices.

Social Cantina seriously delivered! Our server was amazing--fun, helpful, and super attentive the entire time. She gave great recommendations, like the pineapple margarita (so good!) and the salsa flight, which was clutch for helping us pick a favorite. The speedy bowls lived up to the name--came out fast and packed with flavor. Plus, the playlist was actually so good, it added to the whole vibe. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. I'll definitely be back!

This is the third time I've gone and I wish I could give 3.5 stars. We went on a Saturday night and the wait was only 20 minutes, so that was awesome! However, service was still subpar. My drink came out quickly but the server forgot about my friend's flight and it sat on the bar for about 20 minutes before he came and checked on my empty drink and I told him she had never gotten her drinks. Someone should have noticed the drinks were sitting on the bar for over 10 minutes and tried to figure out which table they went to, as it was a different server who had brought my drink anyway. The rest of the food and experience was good, but on all occasions at least one item we've tried to order was unavailable. I am looking forward to eating on the patio once the weather gets nicer since they have a large outdoor seating area! I just hope they have the staff and supplies to maintain the increased demand.

Coming from a border town, it's tough to compete with our Mexican food so we proceed with caution and don't set our expectations too high. The service was quite slow considering it was a Monday night. We ordered a beer and a Lemon lavender sangria. I imagined a craft cocktail with a sprig of lavender peeking out of nice glass. Lavender grows freely near these parts and readily available to uplift a specialty drink. My shrimp bowl was at the level of Chipotle. The cilantro rice and beans had some tasty spices. The tortilla chips had some very spicy seasonings so proceed with caution. I loved the interior and decor, it was hip and vibrant.

Can you bring dogs on the patio?

    Yes! We are dog friendly!

Do I need to make a reservation for today at 5:15 for 4 people?

You do not have to make reservations. We had 4 people around that time . We walked in and was seated right away.

I had two different burritos remade today because they each contained dairy even after stating a dairy allergy. The first one had sour cream on it. One of the people at the restaurant stated they didn't realize that sour cream is dairy. The second time, they re-made it there was no sour cream, but it had cheese inside. Just something to note if you're going there with any kind of food allergies. I've been here a handful of times and there's often this kind of issue unfortunately.

I love finding good places that Tom and Marlene haven't been. At first, I thought this was the Mexican restaurant on the south side of McKinley Street, but that one is long gone. I believe it was was called Cancun--or was it Acapulco? In any case, we drove separately because Tom and Marlene had some of their typical do-gooding to do, and I was a little surprised at how late they were. Well, they had gone to a takeout version of Puerto Vallarta (the same business?) located near where that other old closed Mexican restaurant was, but on the north side of McKinley. In any case, Puerto Vallarta--the real one tucked way behind a secret strip mall with this weird fire lane between the first line of parking spots and the storefront curb itself--is a great place. The menu is pretty vast for a sit-down Mexican restaurant in South Bend, and it's not just different versions and combinations of the same items, although you can seemingly get anything as part of a combination plate. The service is excellent and attentive. It was very busy when we came, and we were seated right when a lot of other people were seated, so our food did take a long time, but it wasn't ridiculously long, and our server continually stopped by to let us know what was happening and to refill water and complimentary chips. There are two or three dining rooms total, and we were seated in the one to the right as you walk in the door. I'm glad we weren't seated in the main (?) central room, because that's where they had a speaker on one of the tables playing music very loudly. I thought this would annoy me, but when you're in one of the other rooms, the music is at a reasonable volume. I guess their method is cheaper than actually installing a sound system throughout the restaurant, but I don't know who actually sits in that main room, because it was empty when we entered and had only two parties dining when we left. There was basketball on the TV when we were here, but the volume was turned off, and they have what looks like an antenna service without an actual antenna, so the broadcast was constantly dropping out for long periods during the entirety of our dinner. I wasn't interested in watching, so I didn't care, but if you're coming here to watch a game, you will be torturing yourself. Our dining room was festive and fun. It was also reassuring to see so many Latino families eating here and to hear them speaking Mexican-accented Spanish. I grew up in Southern California and have lived in the Golden State most of my life; I never judge a Mexican restaurant by who's eating inside it at home, but in the Midwest? Yup, Mexican restaurants get the same treatment as Chinese restaurants everywhere: The more Chinese people you see eating at the restaurant, the better the restaurant. It's also nice to see how many more Latinos there are in Michiana than when I lived there.

For dinner, I got the chicken tinga dorados and was very satisfied; for $9, this appetizer was absolutely enough to be a full dinner for me and was very tasty. I don't love the space here for a lot of reasons, but the food is great and the service was relatively quick once we got seated. Looking forward to a return visit the next time I'm in town!
