Highly inappropriate conversation and uneven haircut. I recently visited Social Salon and unfortunately had an incredibly uncomfortable experience. Within the first three minutes, my stylist was using profanity and discussing graphic, sensitive topics (specifically a reality show scene involving sexual assault). As a client, I found it completely unprofessional to have to redirect the conversation away from such disturbing topics. To make matters worse, the haircut itself is visibly uneven--one side is noticeably longer than the other (as seen in the photo). I called to speak with the manager/owner to explain why I wouldn't be returning for a 'fix.' While she was apologetic and did issue a refund, she repeatedly tried to book a 'next appointment' and 'put a note in my file' for the future. It felt like my concerns about the stylist's conduct weren't fully heard; a refund is appreciated, but it doesn't excuse an environment that feels unsafe or unprofessional. I will be taking my business elsewhere to have the length corrected. read more

It seems like I don't even know where to start, as I think I debate and debate on whether or not I should review this salon. I don't want to hurt anyones reputation or work , but I feel like my honest opinion is important. Given I didn't think my daughter and I would ever come out feeling like this. I called early in the morning explained my horrific previous hair experience at another local well known salon. Explained that they took my money to just burn and damage/destroy the life of my hair. The receptionist was very sweet and supportive mentioned oh we will pair you up with someone who knows and you be all set. I also requested a hair cut for my daughter. I HAVE TO PUT THIS IN CAPS EVERYONE SEEMED SWEET AND WELCOMING. But did not deliver. I showed her a pic of my daughters hair inspo, she got the opposite. Her hair came out looking like a Chinese grandma. No dimensions no structure dull and heavy like feeling. As for me, well I should my stylist a haircut and a future color for the "end goal" . But i specified the hair cut I wanted, I wanted a lob with layers. I got a straight cut. No dimensions no shape no body. Just a cut. Somehow I ended up paying 495.00. I look pretty stupid. But didn't think people would go this far to really understand that I don't know what I'm paying for? Nothing was don't to my hair. I said to cover my grays.???????????? My grays are still here in the room!? I payed 495 dollars for a bob haircut and a gloss and $60 dollar hair treatment!?????? Wow ...... for my daughter 140? I'm just in shock. And at the end it's not how much. It's the quality and the lack of attention to detail.... I am so saddened and disappointed. Will never ever recommend to someone, and if you ever book something they should be able to explain prices prior to sitting you down. read more

Social Salon is truly the best, especially in a pinch! I go there for all of my events and love that I don't have to book weeks in advance. Recently, I went in for a blowout before my prom, and Rashell did an amazing job. She was so easy to talk to and nailed exactly the look I wanted -- even though the photo I showed her was of someone with layers, she still recreated the same style perfectly on my hair. To manager: yes, this occurred at Social Salon and that is why the review was posted here. I had previously reached out privately after my visit but unfortunately didn't receive a resolution at the time. I appreciate the follow up but I won't be returning. Note to viewers: Wish I read the reviews more carefully. There are other reviews with poor grey coverage. Seems my update to one star got removed as duplicate or salon is reporting my comment rather than accepting feedback. Basically my roots were not covered properly and greys showing after service. They need to work on their customer service. And not hire inexperienced staff. Plus they don't shampoo your hair before the coloring! Most places do. Paying over $400 and requiring me to go pay more elsewhere to get it fixed is not fair. This review was posted after reaching out to the owner who didn't offer any adjustments nor invitation to fix my hair. There are much nicer quality salons out there for $250-300 you get full shampoo conditioning and blowout all in one. The stylist private messaged me offering a free cut on yelp. Our 16 year-old daughter made an appointment for hair color without our knowledge and missed the appointment. As a result, Social Salon charged us $265 for the missed "no-show" appointment. We then called to cancel the make-up appointment our daughter made (again, she's a teenager), and Marissa told us we'd be charged $765 -- the entire cost of the color treatment ($500) plus the $265 fee for the previous missed appointment. I've never heard of such aggressive fees or cancellation policies. We neither signed nor electronically acknowledged a policy stating that a missed appointment incurs forfeiture of the full treatment price. I called to question the charges, but I was dissatisfied with the explanation I received. I'm sure they have a right to charge whatever cancellation charges they like, but there are many excellent salons in Palo Alto with fairer (and more transparent) policies. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I was asked to diffuse my own hair after cut correction visit today. Never experienced this before at a salon :/

Here's the good part--They did a great job touching up my roots to match the rest of my hair. They were super nice and had cute dogs that would come sit on my lap. The bad parts 1) pressured me into getting something I didn't want. At first, I came in just to get my roots touched up. When, I asked to get curtain bangs (which they cut in one snip, so super simple), the hairdresser pressured me into also getting some layers just to lighten things up since I have thick hair. I liked my hair length and everything abt it, but every time I expressed hesitation she kept just telling me why I should just get the layers. In the end, the layers were super super subtle, which was good, but I got charged another $130 for the haircut. I was shocked but the lady was staring at me to hurry up and pay and I was too scared to say anything. Looking back I feel like I was pressured into getting the layer which were not needed and hardly made a difference, just so they could charge me another $130. 2) they misled me about the price. I called in advance to ask how much a root touchup would be and I was explicitly told $120. However they charged me $130 for the dye and $130 for the haircut. It was NOT worth $260 for what I got and I feel pretty ripped off especially because it wasn't made clear to me what they would be charging. I guess I should've confirmed everything before, but they were so nice so I just trusted them. 3) Bad blow drying Also with the way that the hairdresser blowdried my hair, it felt like she didn't know what she was doing and made a very odd shape on my head. If you have thick straight hair like me I wouldn't recommend this place. 4) not super careful I've had my hair dyed before and you do NOT need to put dye 1 inch into the forehead. She was attacking my face and I was literally grimacing with every stroke, but again too afraid to say something. When someone else was washing the dye out, they were again rubbing my skin so hard with what felt like a dry towel, it was super painful and my skin is still stained and irritated. Skin all around my neck is brown, and I've never had that happen before when I've gotten my hair dyed. read more

She was really easy to talk to, helped me address what I wanted with my hair while keeping in mind that I wanted to keep it long, and gave me some good advice for long term care! Overall, she helped me understand I could embrace my beach waves with some proper maintenance, hydration, and some other helpful tips. I came in with very long hair and clear expectations and left with a drastically shorter bob-length haircut that I never asked for, agreed to, or approved. Years of hair growth were cut off without my consent. When I pointed out the mistake, Darci's response made the situation even worse. She was rude, dismissive, and defensive, took zero responsibility, and showed no interest in fixing what she had done. I really enjoyed getting my hair highlighted by Madeline. Madeline took the time to ensure we were on the same page with color, and showed me swatches that would work well with my base color. Yikes. I'm sad to say social salon is missing a few things that are really important for a high end salon. First of all there is no receptionist. This means when you call you'll get one of the stylists who answers and they may not know about arranging appointments. A salon receptionist is really essential in making sure one feels like there's someone to welcome you. Secondly, they don't have client gowns/robes/smocks. The two times I've come here I'm freezing because the salon is in an old building with high ceilings and limited heating. If I wanted to just have a cape over my street clothes for a cut or color I would go to a Supercuts. Are those still a thing? Either way, this is such an essential. When I asked about this I was told they would just be careful not to get clothes stained. The third issue is that although the dog who lives at the salon all day is cute, his poop was all over the bathroom on my last visit. Luckily I didn't step on it, but a place of business shouldn't have a dog that lives there all the time, especially one that is not trained. My fourth issue is that hair washing stations have sudden hot or sudden cold water from the plumbing. This can scald a scalp. Sadly even though I love my stylist, I can't go back to social salon. I need a salon that makes me feel welcomed and comfortable. Not cold and watching out for dog poop. read more

I know Rashell from the previous salon she worked for in San Jose. I reached out to her on her personal number for help with detangling my daughter's hair. My daughter's hair is very long but very fine, so it gets tangled easily. This time we couldn't get it detangled soon enough because we were traveling internationally. When we got back, the first thing I did was to call Rashell, because two salons in India had given up on my daughter's hair and suggested cutting it short. Rashell responded immediately and got me a next day appointment. She worked patiently on my daughter's hair and got help from two other colleagues as well. Two hours later, her was completely detangled and we were relieved that we didn't have to cut it short. Hopefully my daughter has learnt her lesson that she should comb her hair everyday and probably wear a bonnet to bed. read more

Where do I begin with this gem of a salon? I had a fantastic experience with Darci! She did an amazing job with both coloring and cutting my hair. Highly recommend Darci for her skill, warmth, and dedication to making my hair perfect! Where has she been my whole life?! It's not often I get to pamper myself, let alone sit in a salon and have my hair done. With two toddlers, I've almost given up that luxury. Darci has a heart of gold and my boys were drawn to her kind spirit and energy. The owner of the salon Marissa and her sister went out of their way to make sure that both my boys were welcome and not any trouble to bring with to my appointment.
