Booked an appointment at the wrong location by accident and was immediately helped by not just the first person who I spoke to, but 2-3 others who came over to help. I've used the salon just once for a haircut and am definitely NOT going back. I don't at all agree with their dry cut methods and can't believe others tolerate it. Definitely AVOID this salon for cuts, since every stylist takes this same approach. The stylist took a full 1.75 hours! The process was a laborious sectioning and clipping up of hair, followed by straight ironing sections (!) and snipping and thinning (with thinning shears, who uses those in 2023??). I swear 100,000 tiny shards of dry hair feel down inside the neck of the gown and under my shirt and bra -- so irritating and itchy. Worst of all, the stylist asked me to tilt my head this way and that for about 50-60% of the cut. The resulting cut is not at all what I would ever want. She took off a full 2 inches of length!! (even though I only agreed to 1 inch) That's criminal. And my hair looks very fuzzy from all the random texturing on the outer layers, wreaking all the good work my previous stylist had put in to maintain a pristine, smooth facade. This experience has really enlightened me to all the great practices my normal stylist (AT A DIFFERENT SALON) incorporates to get a great cut and smooth, shiny hair. She cuts the hair wet and is able to shape and thin it without compromising smooth outer layers. I don't need to bend my head every which way to make her job easier -- she can visualize just how it's going to turn out once dry based on her vast experience cutting hair. I'm definitely going back to her (even though she costs more money). I'm so done with Spoke & Weal. The women there also seemed kind of catty. I just didn't sense a good vibe there. read more

Hello Quarantined Friends whose hair is o_0, like mine, at the moment. I would circle the earth to get a cut from Linsdey Benson, if I could! But there's a little thing called the Pandemic in place :/ Since March 5th 2020 I've sported two suburban haircuts, executed (pls note the word choice) in two different Western Maryland salons because I sheltered in place with my parents for several months. The first cut was a "bob" and I was urged to get a Keratin treatment. To be fair, the stylist recommended a "shag" to start, because a "shag" would would slim my face. LOL OKAY, thanks for the body shaming but HARD PASS. When I asked if my hair could be cut dry he laughed. &^%$ that salon. For real. The second was another "bob"-like situation--cut wet, blow-dried, flat ironed, then detailed. It's still pissing me off. To be fair, the stylist was going to use a razor until I ixnayed. I guess that's a win ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I've since DIY-remedied these horrible cuts by winching my hair back into a tight hold, as if my head is a boat with errant sails because my hair ISN'T MY HAIR, it's someone else's hair. I have a 1980s anchorwoman haircut, maybe as a testimony to the job my parents wanted me to have at some point. This makes me miss Lindsey Benson, my hair whisperer. Let me break it down my allegiance to Lindsey's glorious talent again (in case you haven't read my prior review). Lindsey is an artist who understands the everyday magic of a cut that works, no matter what. She does this by listening intently to what you have to say and helping you to articulate what you want, should you be a little shy or tongue-tied. Then, she cuts to your head shape. This is an actual science, where hair drape, density, cowlicks, etc. happen across your skull in a way that is unique to you. So let's say you actually do want a "bob." Lindsey will cut you YOUR unique bob, that suits your skull. Let's say you don't want a "bob." Lindsey will ask you a bunch of questions--like, what do you DO; how do you FEEL about your hair when you wake up; what are the styling steps you're WILLING to undertake, etc. And then she will create a cut that is superbly flattering and easy for you to maintain. (Remember, y'all will have discussed what you are willing to do to for your style.) Linsdey dry cuts hair and all of her cuts have "movement," so even as you stand stock still, your hair looks dynamic, not blocky/lifeless. I think that both these techniques are super critical for a cut that looks consistently stylish, even as it grows out (SUPER IMPORTANT DURING COVID). How do I know this? Lindsey has been cutting my hair for years :D For me Lindsey's artistry is most apparent as she shapes the style/look you desire, working with your hair--a medium unique to you. Let me explain another way. You know when you see a cut that looks fantastic and you want it but you're not sure that it'll work on you? It could be a classic cut or a trend but you just don't know if your particular hair can rock it. You need a hair translator who happens to be part artist, part architect, part intuitive, part technician. You need Lindsey. Because it takes a great deal of salon experience, skill, and artistry to adapt and architect a "look" to a client's skull, working with the design contrasts of said client's hair. Lindsey has that magic. She makes a haircut a celebration of your uniqueness--face, skull, hair texture, and routine preference. She makes work that works. For example: I have fine, slippery South Asian hair. There's not enough of it to work a "bob" look--full, lush, straight/heat manipulated, etc.--without a ton of products, heat styling (including a flat iron), etc. Because I don't use a ton of products, prefer to air dry, and wouldn't know how to begin to use a flat iron, I don't get "bobs." I'm not even one bit sad about that, y'all. Because, I get a cut that is uniquely suited to me. It's a cut where my natural wave is released; a harmony of all the unique-to-me-traits that my hair exhibits across my skull (including my cowlicks) is achieved; and where my hair fine hair isn't criminalized, rather, it's taken into careful consideration and celebrated. I look amazing because I feel amazing. Because I feel like my hair is a true articulation of who I am. Look, strong personal style and subsequent self confidence is about feeling at home in yourself, not the shape of your face nor the texture of your hair. (BTW, don't let anyone tell you your face shape needs to be changed with a haircut because that is total b*llshit. Your face shape is excellent! And you have incredible hair!) Do yourself a solid and work with Lindsey. She will listen to you. And then, she will cut your hair so you can shine bright like the diamond you are. You deserve this. Trust. read more

Great for color. Great for cut if you want a very straight line with no texture, no layers, no volume. They dry cut which really only works for a certain style. I asked for layers and she used thiining shears on my fine hair. NOT a good look. To top it off the prices are insane. I plan to return for color but keep switching colorists to a junior since mine is now up to $450. Will look elsewhere for color or just get a basic cut. read more

I've been going to Kaycee for my color for 5+ years and I don't know where to even begin with how much I love her, and what she's done with my hair! My hair is the healthiest it's ever been and yet I get highlights every few months. Kaycee knows exactly what to do. I don't need to give her any direction and she just does it. She changes it slightly every time, especially based on the seasons. It is so natural and doesn't require any upkeep. Whenever I meet someone who doesn't know me, they think I'm naturally blonde. And if/when I tell them I get highlights, they always want to know where I get them done! KAYCEE IS THE BEST! And Spoke and Weal in general is amazing. I think I've finally found a salon for my haircuts! (Color was done at a different salon) I'm happy to write the first review for Raquelle who did an amazing job. She listened to what I wanted and she made sure she understood how short I was willing to chop - we all know what it's like to walk out of a salon feeling like we just lost half our length, so I was grateful for that. She had a precise hand and gave me the exact cut I wanted. Yay!! They do cut hair dry here, which was a new experience for me but I do like it because you can see exactly how your hair looks while they're cutting. $100-$200 (gasp) price tag can definitely give many sticker shock, but in my case with Raquelle it was worth it. BLONDS STAY AWAY FROM KAYCEE!!!!! I found this salon on Yelp with great reviews and decided to go see master colorist Kaycee to do highlights on my long healthy hair. She ruined my hair so bad, bleached parts fell off (she over bleached it!!!) and then the shade of the roots looked purple compared to the rest of the hair that was blond ... prior to this salon I was doing bleach in NYC for 10 years and never had hair fell off!!! This was the only bad experience in my life and now I have to wait for years to get my hair to grow back to what it was before... I wish no one else to go through this ... Okay after many failed experiments with DIY boxed hair color and henna, and completely damaging my hair, I finally went to a professional at Spoke & Weal. This salon is not "old lady" like most Palo Alto salons and the staff and young and have an urban edge. She has mentored directly with the founders of the salon and was amazing. I could tell I lucked out when I saw her hair -- you can tell if a colorist is good based on the color they do on their own hair. Hers was vibrant and natural. I got a long personal consult with both the colorist and a hair stylist. She (and the whole salon) recommend a natural approach and "being yourself." Red is a very hard color to master -- especially with highlights. Most colorists have either made me too brown or too blonde. Or too "old lady." My DIY adventures in color have been too harsh, brassy or orange. They do a package price here -- where you pay a flat rate and they add all the extras. They threw in glazes, conditioners, highlights (she really did a full head of highlights, not just partial) protein treatments, and a blowout. They spent 4 hours on my hair! I almost cried when I saw this color--she has magically and intuitively recaptured the actual natural strawberry color of my hair that I was born with. When I looked in the mirror it brought back a flashback of my childhood. The color works well with my pale redhead skin. I love it! I will be back for touch ups here because this color would be very difficult to replicate. read more

I've been walking around with $150+ shaggy haircuts for years that never lay right unless I take time I don't have to curl it into submission. Absolutely love my new balayage. I used to live in the city and frequented Cinta Aveda Salon, which was amazing, but Spoke & Weal is even better. The salon is super clean and modern and I love the herb tea they offered. I was a hair model for a new stylist named Jasmine - she communicated with me via text and was very professional, sweet and easy to work with. We looked through some examples I brought and discussed what we could actually achieve given my dark thick hair - love that they were very honest and upfront with me.
