despite people warning me about Stanford Hair, I still decided to go here for a hair cut. I came back with a bob with a tail. I look like a rooster right before my graduation and even my friends can't pretend to like it. I have gone to 5+ different hair places before this and I have to say this is the WORST experience I have had in my entire life. Spent about $55 just to feel embarrassed to leave my room or look at myself in the mirror. They don't even bother shampooing before the cut. Go here at your own expense! RUINED MY GRADUATION. Great experience! They had a change in ownership recently and hired a bunch of new stylists so a lot of the older negative reviews are outdated. I had a men's cut with Luis today, he was super kind and made sure my hair looked great! Also, the price for a men's cut here is very reasonable ($35 + tip) compared to other options in Palo Alto. I really hate to leave this review. It was simply the worst haircut I've had since I was a teenager going to Fantastic Sam's in a small town in Mississippi (my hometown). Enough said. The salon is easy to find, and mostly well kept up (some empty stations used for storage space). The other two guys in the salon when I walked in seemed to be having great experiences - likely with the people others recommend making appointments with. The woman who cut my hair, however, was a disaster. She was silent, cold, and seemed very annoyed when I told her I didn't want a clipper cut (laziest type of haircut, and does not work for people with curly hair). Strike one - no shampoo. And then she could not scissor cut to save her life! It barely got any shorter, and after about 10 minutes asked if she could just quickly clipper to get it done. I caved, and boy that was a mistake. I got treated to rapid cuts along a comb held into my hair at random angles (and lengths), resulting in a horribly uneven cut that was very noticeable after a month - strike two. After she finished, I went to pay, expecting the $15-20 I'd seen on yelp. Nope. $27. For a crappy haircut. Seriously? I was not happy, but I should've asked for the price ahead of time. Not sure if she just picks based on her irritation level or what (for me it was surely high). Strike three. To top it off, when I got home, I noticed my sideburns were uneven, and the hair at the center of my forehead had never been cut (was an inch longer than the rest). Strike four. Needless to say, I'll never be back. Found a different place who salvaged this disaster, with a friendly stylist who kept saying "crazy lady!" while repairing the mistakes from Stanford Hair. If you do decide to go here, pick someone who was called out by name in a positive review and beware the silent woman in the hair net. read more

My husband has been a long time customer at Stanford Hair. The Barber he goes to has 30 years experience in this profession, his name is Howard. He is professional and the shop manager. He has been my barber for over 20 years but still asks me how I would like my hair cut? I like that as a long time customer he never assumes how I want my hair. I'm a current Stanford student (male), and I came here per the advice of a friend (female) who got a really good-looking haircut from one of their barbers (Joe) and recommended it. Joe was busy with a different customer, but they helped me right away and the haircut only took about half an hour. I had my sides razored and the rest cut short and blended in, and the barber did a decent job with this. A very simple haircut and he did it fairly well. They didn't wash my hair, only used those little spray bottles to get it wet before cutting, and they didn't offer me any products. For $20, it's a decent and fast haircut, but I'd much rather spend the $28 at Hair International in the Stanford Shopping Center, where they go above and beyond what you expect from the haircut and will not just cut your hair but actually style it. After a week or so, with my hair growing out a bit, the cut immediately fell apart. Can anyone say straw hut look? Unfortunately the money you save per visit is made up by the fact that you need another haircut a week later, so I can't say I'll be back here. It worked fine in a pinch though, when I needed a haircut that day. read more

Great place to get a cut! Very friendly staff, and the owner Carmelo is a great guy. I was visiting from Chicago, and usually you don't go out of your own barber circle, but this cut was needed. I started taking my sons to Carmelo when they were small. One has moved out of the area, but the other still goes there as well as I. And, we're all treated like family. I've also watched some of the other staff and everyone is treated fairly and as quickly as possible. They also take appointments, though it seems like they have a lot of walk-in trade. read more

Above average haircut at a great price. For the area, it doesn't get much cheaper than this place, but haircuts at other places get a lot worse. While I didn't catch his name, my barber was friendly and efficient - I was in and out in less than half an hour and my hair looked pretty good. I've been going here for a few years now, both for convenience and quality's sake, and it definitely lives up to both. Marjorie cuts my hair and she's so great at what she does, as they all are from what I've seen. The last time I went there, she gave me the best haircut I've ever had. Everyone I knew was complimenting me about it. Her and her colleagues at Stanford Hair are so genuinely nice too, it's a great place to be around. Every time I leave, I look forward to coming back. Not a happy camper--my husband has been going to Howard for years and always a GREAT haircut! So hubby goes to get one and is told--lied to--that Howard is on "vacation." Week after week this is the story--it's a lie. After some searching I found him at CAPTAIN'S!!! There was no way husband was going to let any of the others at Stanford go near him with scissors!! Carmelo is The Bomb! I've gone to Stanford Hair for 35 years. In between visits, I've lived in SF, the Midwest, Los Angeles, and the O.C. And I have never found its peer. I went to Stanford hair as a grad student in the 90's, and now as a staff member I'm back (and many of the same people are working there). In general, you get a decent, competent cut. One barber can be a little hit or miss (and I didn't catch his name), but the rest are reliable, and Marjorie in particular has always taken lots of time to get things just right (can't recommend her highly enough). A lot of people don't know where you can go for a cheap good haircut with nice conversation. At Stanford hair, you get just that. The Men's basic cut is around $15. The hairdressers are knowledgeable and able to give you what you want. read more

I'm not a picky person about my haircuts but their quality is really unacceptable. I showed photos of my last haircut but the hairdresser did not pay the slightest attention to my wishes. After the haircut I looked like a caricature from a newspaper: sticking hair of different length etc. It was so hilariously awful that I had to go to another barber to fix Stanford Hair "haircut". They are quick, inexpensive, and professional - right there on campus. I got my hair cut on my lunch break and went back to work feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I have been using Stanford Hair for ~12 years. It is just excellent. Barbers are very skilled and they do a great job. Carmelo the owner is a great guy and gives me a great haircut every time. Expert with a clipper/buzzer (which is not easy to find these days). I also take my 7 year old son and Carmelo is just excellent with him. My son loves Carmelo's haircuts as he is superb with kids--the best I have ever seen. Highly recommended for all ages. read more

The atmosphere was friendly, but I didn't like the overall experience. My hairdresser didn't even wash my hair (and I had oily hair); didn't communicate well with me what she was doing (she layered my hair without directly asking me); and the cutting movements were reckless (she tried to cut my hair really fast and often cut only the part of the hair she held between her fingers). I started coming to Stanford Hair when I started school at Stanford about two years ago, and I have to say, Marjorie is the best. My hair has DEFINITELY improved significantly since she started taking care of it, and I couldn't be more grateful. She's always friendly and gives great advice about hair care. She has squeezed me in on multiple occasions when I've really needed it, and I've never had a bad experience with her. I wish I could take Marjorie with me when I leave Stanford. I get my hair cut here when I'm in a rush and don't have time to make it elsewhere. You generally get an okay looking cut. However, I've never had one that grew out nicely, so I typically end up having to get it re-cut a couple weeks later. read more
