Finally decided to correct my Social Security card with the right DOB (guess it's been 1 day off since I was 12), and thanks to Stephanie K for directing me to the 2nd door furthest from the parking lot - guess it's pretty common for people to walk into the first door (benefits). The process was relatively quick and painless, I probably shouldn't have put it off for so many years since replacement cards are free. Note that the benefits office closes at 3, but the cards side is open till 3:30pm and you just need to be in the door by then. My strategy for places like this is to go right before closing since they want you out as quickly as possible. Going by the numbers, there were about 40 people ahead of me but the line moved pretty quickly - I was out within about maybe 45 minutes, so going on your lunch hour is doable at least. Office is depressing as hell, but it's clean w/ a lot of seating. There are guards on site and they were surprisingly needed to kick out a very angry lady and her elderly dad. I'm really not sure what could possibly piss you off at the cards office, but the guards were actually good at calming her down and let them back in eventually. They also made the 2 morons blasting youtube crap on their phone turn it off speaker, so yay for that. read more

If you need survivors benefits, you are out of luck! Sorry for your loss, but you are on your own to provide for you and your loved ones. I have been trying for 3 months to get an appointment as you cannot apply for survivors benefits online. The person answering on the phone at the Buffalo location WILL NOT HELP. I have dealt with several "customer service" people there. None of them will help. They keep repeating they have no openings for 40 days so you have to call back. The main number of Social Security tells you that your local office will send you a letter or give you a call back with an appointment date if they are full as soon as they have openings and within 10 days, the local office at Buffalo street will not do so. "call back Monday mornings to see if there is a cancellation". One time when I called the local office, I tried to explain that I was waiting for 3 months to get an appointment, the guy that answered the phone just hung up on me. I also stood in line but when it finally was my turn, they told me I had to had an appointment to file for survivors benefits. So, you cannot file online, cannot walk in and cannot get an appointment . At this point I am at the end of my rope..... read more

Omg 3 hours to sign a form. So they open at 9am you would need to be there early, to get any service done. I'm not sure about the others but the gentleman I had was very nice. So back in 1986, my parents went to the SSA office to get my brother and I social security numbers. And upon doing so... Wait for it... They put down my date of birth wrong! I went about life just fine until the Real ID Act was implemented. And upon coming to this SSA office for a new SS card, I learned the truth - was I born on the 8th or 9th of September? My parents say the 8th, but the federal gov says the 9th. Thanks mom and dad! The first wait was horrendous. About two hours worth of waiting. Thankfully, the guy at window 15 was very nice. And instead of making me wait in line all over again the next TWO times over two days I had to come here to get everything all straightened out, he had me just come right back to his window. He remembered me, remembered the issue, and got it all taken care of. (I was, in fact, totally born on the 8th, not the 9th.) So while the wait is excruciating, the employees (er, at least the one I interacted with) was awesome. So it all evens out to 3 stars (can a gov agency really ever get more than 3 stars anyways?). If you decide to come right when they open, get here extra EXTRA early. The line starts forming at least an hour before the doors open. When you walk in, you go to a machine, push the appropriate button for the reason for your visit, and take a number. And then the waiting begins... read more

I have had to come here on several occasions and I myself prefer to get in line before the office opens. There is a public sidewalk where one or two people will preach fire and brimstone over a bullhorn, which can be quite annoying -especially when people aren't in a position to walk away and is an unfortunate situation for those who would rather not listen to an improtu sermon. Frankly, if I wanted to hear a sermon I'm sure I could easily find a church that could accommodate my request if that is what I were to be seeking. Here are some tips on how to have a good experience at the SSA office: 1) Make sure you're in the right line. There's an office for general business (#150) and one specifically if you're getting a new card (#100) 2) Get there at LEAST 30 minutes before opening. I arrived at 8:30 and there were already about 20-30 people in line. 3) Here's the biggest tip: Print out and fill out any applications at home, and triple check you have all supporting documents (passport, etc). I came here to change my last name on my card after getting married. I brought my passport and my certified marriage certificate that was mailed to me by the county clerk. All went smoothly. With these tips, I was able to get in and out in 15 minutes once the office opened. Staff was cordial and there were many windows open so about 10 people were being seen at a time. read more

Currently, I am an unemployed college professor who is deaf. My husband passed away unexpectedly. I went to SSA to wait in line to do the paperwork. One of the security guards was kind enough to check the number on the board for me. Then, the kind security guard assisted me to window #11, and the African-American man with black-framed glasses asked me, "How may we help you?". I gave him the papers as proof. I don't understand this place. I made an application over the phone (very easy) and they scheduled me an appointment to take in my proof documents to the LV Buffalo office. Told me to bypass the line, go to the front, and tell them I had an appt. I did that, walking past 200 people in line. The guard said if I needed to see someone, then I had to go back in the line. The "appointment " seemed meaningless. So I'm not understanding why they even pretend you are getting an appointment, when the line is the same whether you have one or not. read more

I came here to replace a lost SSN card. Prior to my visit, I had dowloaded the application from their website and filled it out before I arrived. That seemed to be my saving grace for a visit that lasted exactly 13 minutes once I got in the door. But, I did come here on a Tuesday morning at 8:30am, 30 minutes before they opened. There are two lines here, one for SSN benefits and another one for SSN cards: make sure you're in the correct line because I was in the wrong one for about ten minutes. Thankfully the one for cards was shorter. At exactly 9:00am, the doors opened and those with applications filled out already were directed to windows where clerks were ready to process your paperwork. The other folks, I assume, had to get info and then fill out their apps because they went to another line. I went to window 13, a friendly gentleman took my paperwork, processed it expediently, and I was back in my car by 9:15am. My replacement card will take 7-10 business days to arrive in the mail. Overall, I was surprised by how easy and painless this was to do. If I had read Norm K.'s review before I went, it may have been even easier because apparently you can call and make an appointment! First off...I'm so glad that Logan B. got to have a good experience but just because he did doesn't mean that he should talk down about us that had a really awful experience!!! The security at the door is VERY unkind, uncaring and, honestly, real pricks. I need a new copy of my card as mine was lost in a fire and Nevada is one of 7 states you cannot get a replacement online. Security at the door told me that none of my problems trying to get this accomplished is any of his concern and it makes no matter to him. You must go to an office with the proper paperwork. But to do this you must have an appt and I'm finding this rather difficult to set up. This is all well and good except the only other way to get a replacement is to mail in your paperwork along with your drivers license (not a copy...your actual drivers license). I don't have a passport so that does me no good. I could send in my military ID but then how am I supposed to get on base and what do I use as my medical insurance card without my military ID?!?! So if I mail in my drivers license how am I supposed to legally drive my car to work?!?! On top of this it says it could take 10 weeks or so to process. This system and society is crumbling. Why do people have to be so unkind and uncaring to others. This world would be a much nicer and happier place if we all were helpful and thoughtful towards others. read more

This is my first and only trip to SSA. The wait on the phone is ridiculous so I thought I would go there to drop of records. Who knew it would be a big production? (Think DMV) I waited in line to see someone to get a number. He was OK but not the friendliest. Then I waited a lot longer to see a person about what I went there for. He said he couldn't scan the records but he could send them to Carson City. After explaining a little more of why I was there and the challenges I was having, he was kind enough to give me a phone number to the department I needed. WOW. That made everything since then so much easier. I hope to not go back and if I do, I guess I'll have to wait an hour or two on the phone to make an appointment... Oh, wait... I did that before and the person I was supposed to talk to was a no-show. (I made a phone appointment in lieu of waiting in lines with a severe back injury and never got a call) Check the hours before you go. I forgot what day of the week I went but they closed at noon. For update my Social Security Card. I came here around 7:50am and i was the second in the line. Around 50people were benind of me. When the door was opened, many windows were opened to do work. So more than 10people in the line sit at same time for their needs. It's been weeks of frustration trying to call or get a hold of someone in Social security office in Buffalo. For everyone to know, they all work from home. The best time to call them is 9-10 am Wednesday to Friday. Don't call any other days because it won't go through. It'll ring for a long time or it'll hang up. They are all backed up with mails and calls. They are trying their best to catch up with everyone but are given limited access to certain things. Make sure you do all the application online first and then call them so it'll be a smoother process. Office are literally closed. There is no sign to tell when they'll be open. Came here after reading a few Yelp tips while waiting in line at the Henderson location about name changes being done at the Buffalo location only. I even checked a Social Security site/forum about name changes, and this was the only result. *SIGH* Wished updates would've been widely published... As soon as I stand in line, there's a sign that reads: "EFFECTIVE APRIL 2018 All Social Security Card business can be conducted at ANY of the three SSA locations in the Las Vegas valley." I would've taken a pic of the sign, but no photographs and/or recordings are allowed in the SSA offices. Should also note that their security guards and staff will politely tell you to put away your mobile devices (e.g., cell phones) when talking to reps at the windows - observed a few of those instances. Anyway, I can't throw a fit about unnecessarily driving to two locations since it's already been done. I say that because the staff there was nothing shy of nice and courteous to me. There's phases of getting help. The first is the line to check-in, when individuals go to the first available window to let staff know what you're there for, and you get issued a number. This number is associated with the personal information you just gave to the first staff member, so don't trade your number with anyone. Numbers are also called out of order - the audio-visual screens and numerous signs state that the order is called according to the situation. Perhaps specific staff members are given certain cases to handle, and it depends on their availability? After going in 30 minutes past their opening time on a Friday, I stood in the first line for about 10 minutes to be issued a number. It took another 45-60 minutes to see someone. Since I already had my form printed and completed (forms are available online) and my official marriage certificate, it only took the lady 5-10 minutes to work with me for a simple name change. I'm seriously just thankful that my needs weren't too complicated. While she helped me out, we got to chat about the NFL playoffs 'cause I noticed she was a Cowboys fan. Super nice lady! I just feel bad that her team didn't make it past the divisional round for the playoffs this season. A previous couple also went back to her during my consultation, and she was all nice about quickly giving them new/correct forms to complete for another time. What else...? The security guards are quite humorous. Heard of a few of them joke around with other individuals while waiting for my number to be called. They were also courteous enough to loudly call names - think a few of the SSA reps had trouble with their loudspeakers when calling numbers and/or names. read more

Once I got there, the security guard came out and let me in once I told him I had an appointment. Shortly after checking in, I was called to a booth, and I was out in 5 minutes! I went on a Monday so I expected the long wait. Go to door 100 for cards. I arrived at 1:30pm and was out around 3pm. The guards were not helpful. There were people asking questions and they rudely answered them. They won't let you sit on the vacant chairs of closed windows. Make sure you do not miss your # because you have to get a new one if you do! Only half of the 19 windows were open. Bring original documents only! I have never been so discriminated along with disrespected on how the check in person treats you just because you are not their liking. I was accompanying my grandmother regarding as to why her benefits were suspended when almost 3 weeks ago we had waited in line and provided all the required documents that was needed then to find out with a phone representatives that not one single document was turned in or even scanned into their records system. So we went once again to this office and the person informed us that we weren't allowed to speak along with thinking we didn't speak English and continued to call us names under her breath. Everyone was very nice and accommodating. Office is clean and I appreciated that there was Security to keep everyone in order. Yes it took 2 hours to process a name change, but to all the people that complain that there could be more windows open I say this: Do you realize this is not a for-profit business? The next time you complain that your taxes are too high you can sit back and think abut how payroll is the highest expendable cost of running most businesses. I had to come here to change my name post wedding. I was dreading coming here and dealing with the whole name change fiasco and long lines. I looked online and downloaded the form ahead of time. I had it all filled out before I got there and decided to bite the bullet and head in. I set a goal to get this done in six months and I was already pushing my own deadline. Yikes! I walked in and the security guard directed me to the self-check in kiosk on the back wall. I followed the prompts and took my number. I had 50+ people ahead of me (long sigh). I came in the afternoon and this place was overflowing. My wait time equated to 80 minutes (give or take). I did my best to entertain myself. I would suggest you bring a magazine or book if you're arriving later in the day like I did. I jumped to it once they called my number. I arrived at my assigned window with paperwork completed and all the required documentation (marriage certificate, DL, old SS card etc) in hand and ready to roll. The gentleman helping me was delightful and gave me some tips on places to visit in Puerto Rico (where I was married). At that point, it took one signature and quick confirmation of my info to complete the change. He stated I was smart to come in (vs mailing forms/documentation) since it would be a faster process completing everything in person (score). He provided my receipt and I was out the door. I received my new card a week and half after my visit. Now, it's time to head for the DMV (ugh). Hot Tips: It's never fun to visit a government office. Come prepared with items to entertain yourself during the long wait. Go online a see what types of documents you need ahead of time. Fill them out at home and have everything ready to go when you get there. My handwriting stinks and this saved time by having everything typed so the workers didn't have to decrypt my poor penmanship. Come early and avoid the lines that I suffered through during my mid-afternoon visit. This was a 2 star visit for the office. They had 19 windows and only a handful open (boo). I bumped them to 3 stars because the gentleman helping me was so upbeat, helpful and friendly. read more

This was the second time I've had to use this social security office. Absolutely worst experience I have ever had at any govt office. Most unfriendly and organized place I've ever been to. 20 windows and only 5 of them open. It's a shame that all of these govt facilities treat people like shit. The officers are rude and treat people like crap. I sat there for over three hours to get a replacement SS card. I can only speak for the card services side, the benefits side was mobbed and looked pretty miserable. Thankfully, someone called out that card services were next door, so we quickly ran over there. My girlfriend needed a replacement card, and we pulled a number that was about 25 from the current number. It wasn't that crowded, and they went really quick, only maybe a 15 minute wait. The woman that helped us was really great, and made the process so smooth. Typically you're worried something crazy is going to happen, or mistakes are made, etc. This lady made sure everything was handled quickly, and we were out the door in like 5 minutes Great and fast service, exceeds expectations when thinking about government! read more

I have to give a shout out to the gentleman, Keith A. who worked behind the window in this location. I went in to apply death benefit due to the passing of my husband. Keith was so compassionate and accommodating that he made it easy and painless for me. For the first time since I lost my LH, he managed to put a smile on my face. Everybody complains about the experience at SS office, but I was lucky enough that I was in and out within 45 minutes. We have to understand how many people they serve and help each and everyday. After driving by one day and seeing the line, I started searching online for advice on when to go. I was so happy I checked yelp to see there are actually two doors. Suite 150 is benefits, and the door to the left (Suite 100 I think) is for cards. The cards side is about half as busy as the benefits side. Since they open at 9am, I decided to just show up at 7:45am and camp outside on a Wednesday. I brought a towel, book, and a bottle of water. Some people brought pop-up tailgating/camping chairs. I was number 5 in line showing up that early. Not many people came after me - maybe 3 people? It wasn't until 8:20am when more people started showing up steadily, then around 8:45am in masses. By the time they opened at 9am, the line was around the building. If you show up right when they open, you'll be standing outside a while. It's not because there aren't chairs inside, but the machines you check into right when you walk in the door create a very slow moving line to get inside. I was walking back to my car at 9:07am, so my wait time was 75 minutes. The folks you're in line with will provide plenty of entertainment for you. The guy next to me who kept using a piece of paper as his telephone and talking to himself about how he's hungry and wants to grill himself "one of them anaconda snakes," made me want to start a live tweet from the Social Security Office. People were still checking in to get numbers when I was leaving and squeezing past them. The benefits side was a zoo. It's the typical government office wait, and it sucks. It's totally a one star thing. However, since there seems to be some sort of benchmark set for waiting, everything else ran smoothly. I came prepared with my paperwork filled out and more ID than you could possibly imagine. Around 8:30/8:45am, someone actually came outside and passed applications for a card out to the line.They opened promptly and started calling numbers. The security guards directed people as they moved inside to get their number, talking pretty sternly and authoritatively which helped move people quickly. I'm not sure what all of the fuss is about. I came to this location for a duplicate social security card. I came prepared with required documents. Location was easy to find and the parking lot was pretty full. Monday 1245. I walked into the highly air conditioned room and pulled my ticket then found where the applications were and filled one out, noticing how packed the place was I got discouraged. I walked to my car filled it jot and came back in, standing against the wall until a seat opened. They were calling numbers extremely fast to my surprise, about a number a minute. I pulled my ticket at 1245 and left at 2pm. I was expecting a long wait but this was nothing! The man who helped me was extremely quick, just typed in the computer and gave me my receipt. Obviously places like these (including dmv) aren't going to be a joyous trip, but I was pleasantly surprised at the fast pace! read more

I was there for 1 hour wait when I went to get my replacement SSN card (shouldn't have lost it in the first place). I recommend going online and bringing the required ID forms needed for whatever reason you are going to that office, otherwise it will just be a waste of a visit! It's a pretty simple process, you grab a ticket, fill out the SSN application, and wait. Once you've been seen by the associate, you're in the clearing from there and everything goes by fast. This office was super easy to find. I lost my SS card so came for a replacement. I filled out the application online and printed it off before coming. The first office is for other ss docs while the second, not suite 150, is for ss cards. As soon as you walk in the kiosk is there to sign in and get your number. Seating is limited but when I showed up at 2:00 p.m. most seats were open. They close at 3:30 so if you aren't in by then, good luck. (A huge rush of people came in at 3). They were on A688 when I showed up. I ended up waiting for an hour before they called my number (A752). It wasn't a bad wait at all as long as you have something to occupy your time. I got to the window, gave the lady my application and ID and was out in 2 minutes. It'll be 2 weeks before I get my card in the mail, but the people were friendly and place was clean. I arrived to the place at 8:45 am. There was a line out to the parking lot that curved around the entrance gate. I could not believe how many people were already there before the 9:00 am opening. Once the doors opened, the security guard came out calling for those with appointments. Honestly, my day at SS was quick. It was a steamy 20 minute wait (the line to get in the door was long), but I was out the door by 9:43. I only needed to go to have my name changed due to marriage, so I am unsure how long it takes for other needs. You will get your card in the mail. If I had any recommendations, it would be to make an appointment or try your best to do what you need online. There are three offices now that offer card services even though the website does not state the same at this time. I honestly feel for government employees- it's not a job that I imagine makes you go home happy at the end of the day. It has to be tiring dealing with people day in and day out.
