This is a disgrace. My wife received a notice from SSA that they were cutting her benefits totally until Q2 of 2022, then reducing them by $500 after that. I called, was told that they couldn't find a reason for the change, but I would have to file a claim....which we did. The instructions said to either send the claim in the mail or bring it to the office. So I drove 40 minutes to the Newport News Office to hand-deliver the claim. When I got there, they refused to accept the envelope with the claim....only people with appointments are allowed in.....I called the office, and it was the same answer. If they are changing the policy (OK during these COVID times), they should change the claim form instructions as well. We're all paying for this????? read more

Needed a name change and it was very simple (this is during Covid) filled out the paperwork, sent in the forms along with all the appropriate documents, got my certified signed documents back next day and got my new card in only a week. Reason: Name Change I looked online for the application, filled it out, printed it, and called to see if I needed an appointment but the representative said no, that I could just walk in. Afraid I wouldn't make it on time, I asked if it would be possible to get it done today if I got there by 3:00pm. The rep stated that as long as I'm in the doors before closing, I'd be serviced. I arrived at the office at 3:34pm when they close at 4:00pm. Security guided the way and I sat in the waiting area. After reading reviews online and looking around the waiting room(approx 15+ people), I expected to be waiting awhile. Let's just say I left by 3:54 :) I got everything I needed to get done within 20 min! This place is the absolute worst. Granted, I don't make a habit of visiting the social security office - but the 2 other times I have had to go I was in and out in less than 30 min. One of these visits was to a small town office and the other in a large metropolitan city (both in Oregon). This visit was intended to be just as quick as my last 2 visits. I just needed to drop off paperwork for my name change. I was confused when I saw about 7 people waiting outside in the very hot, humid weather; unprotected from the sun. I waited patiently for 30 minutes to be ushered in by security, through the metal detector and to my surprise I found a completely full waiting room and only 2 windows open. During my next 30 minutes while waiting for my number to be called, I started to notice people going to the window only to go sit back down again. At first I felt like they hadn't brought the correct paperwork and were sent back to fill something out. I was wrong. My number was called and I realized they were just calling numbers to check us in and make sure we had the correct paperwork. He verified I had what I needed and said I needed to wait for my number to be called again. I asked him why, because the website told me all I was doing was dropping off the paperwork and would wait 10-14 days for my card. He said he wasn't an actual case worker and couldn't take my paperwork. I asked him how much longer it was going to take. He told me it was going to be another 2 hours until I could be seen! 3 hours to drop off paperwork? I told him there was no way I could wait around for a bunch of lazy, incompetent federal employees to get their shit together and would wait until I went back to Oregon - where this would never take 3 hours out of someone's life. Tomorrow morning I'm getting up bright and early with the hope of being the first person in line at the Hampton office and hopefully I'll fair better there. If not, it will have to wait for a trip home. What in the hell are these people getting paid for? It is certainly not to work. read more

I came to the Newport News, Va. social security office to get a replacement s.s. card. I lost my wallet and everything in it, including my drivers license. So, I went to the DMV and got a temporary copy of my drivers license until my replacement came in the mail. I checked in at the first window and told them my situation... He gave me an application to fill out . They called my number and I was called to a second window with a different person. They said that they had to have the actual license and to come back when I had it. They should have told me that to start with and I wouldnt have had to wait an hour for nothing. All of those other reviews are right. They are imcompetent. Did they do this on purpose? That would be wrong, so I guess they have to be incompetent !!!! read more

Do not go here!!! There was a Veteran who couldn't sit down on the metal benches because of shrapnel in his back. They told him he either has to sit down or go get a pillow. He asked to see the regulations on that and the rent a cop stated that she didn't have to show him anything. Then after he refused they told him they were going to call the police. Three weeks ago my 91-year-old mother with dementia lost her purse in which she carried her Medicare card. I went online to get her a replacement card by first going to MyMedicare only to find I had to register for an account and the first question was to enter the Medicare number. Of course, I had no idea since the card had been lost. Directions said if you had any problem to go to MySocialSecurity. Again I was asked to register which I did using my mother's information. This time I was told the info was invalid. So I called the number listed to actually talk to someone. This woman said I was committing fraud for trying to get a new Medicare card for my mother, only she could do that. She said to go to the local Social Security office and they would probably ask for a certified doctor's statement of her dementia. When you enter the SS office, you have to sign in on a computer which I did under my info because my mother is unable to do that. When we were finally called to the window, I told that even though I had signed in, this visit was for my mother and gave her the name and SS number. She said my mother would have to give the info herself which I stated she often cannot remember her name and no time can she state her SS number or address or birthdate. Therefore I was told I would have to have a doctor's certification as to her dementia and why she cannot take care of her own business. It took me days to have the neurologist provide this info and to understand what certification consists of. We returned to the SS office, again I signed in, and when we proceeded, very quickly, to the agent I mentioned that we sure had to undergo a lot of rigamarole just to get Mother a replacement Medicare card, as I handed her the paperwork. She asked, "how so"? I explained about the dementia certification. She apologized as she barely looked at the papers and told me that the Medicare card should arrive in a couple of weeks and gave me a stamped letter that my mother could use in the meantime if she had to see a doctor. Well, today was the day she had an appointment and as I pulled out the letter and saw that it was in my name and had info pertaining to my Medicare, not Mother's. When at home, I called the local SS office and was told there were no agents available and to call another time. So I called the 800 SS#, and after listening to several recordings, none of which listed my problem finally got to a real person. Fortunately, this young man (possibly Lee) took care of the problem and said it would take about 4 weeks for her to receive her replacement card. Now, I have to wait a month before knowing if this is really straightened out. read more

I lost my wallet a couple of weeks ago and like a dummy I had my Social Security card in there and needed to replace it. I tried doing it online initially because apparently thats a thing but that ability isn't available for Virginia. I came to this office on Thursday afternoon i must say this was quicker than I expected. Im not sure if I just happened to pick the right day or if my reason for coming in was miniscule in comparison to the other people in the office but I was in and out within 15 mins. I went through metal detector and was told to go to the kiosk. The kiosk had a list of reasons for the visit and I chose the replacement SS card reason and a ticket number came out and I went to the back to fill out a clipboard with my personal information. I filled that out and my ticket number was called right afterwards. I went to the window and explained why I needed a new SS card and she went ahead and submitted that request for a new one to be mailed. She didnt even need the paperwork that I filled out. She gave me a receipt for my request and i was out of there. Oh yea it was free too so that was a plus! read more

Someone should explain to the completely unprofessional and incompetent security staff here that you can provide good security without being a completely abusive, rude, piece of shit. We're trained to treat people at military security checkpoints overseas with more respect and dignity than these douchebags treat American citizens. My wife was just trying to get her new social security card after we got married this week. The rent-a-cop assholes at the door yelled at her and a woman with a baby for no reason, then made them stand outside in the cold, rather than in the vestibule which would have posed zero security risk. They manhandled the fuck out of her purse and it's contents, and dumped them completely out violently and then seemed to enjoy the fact that she was embarrassed by some of the contents being displayed. I agree with most of the negative comments about the Newport News social security office. I visited there recently with my wife, about her social security application, and the entire process was baffling. It was our second visit because the first was Wednesday afternoon, when they are closed. You discover that when you arrive there. The office is concealed in a sleazy strip mall between a Popeyes and a third class motel. The ground floor office looks like a continuation of the motel. There is no sign on the building other than the numbers 11706 over the door, which is the address. No mention of social security. The entry process resembles that of a totalitarian state, or an airport security scan, or a federal prison. After you remove all metal from your body you go through the scanner. However the guards were professional, and polite to my wife. What are these people afraid of? I had the impression that they would be happy if nobody would come to their office. Trick question: DO YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT? I don't see how anyone could have an appointment because my experience was nobody answers their phone in that office. After obtaining our number from a robot we entered the prison holding pen which was jammed. Yes, most of the people waiting there were in their 20's. And most people in their 20's do not subject themselves to experiences like this unless they are expecting a lot of taxpayer money as a reward. Some of them were young foreigners clutching foreign passports. Why are they in a social security office? When my wife's number was called we got to chat with a clerk who faced us from behind a bullet-proof armored glass cubicle. He seemed unhappy. He did not want to know why we were there. We discussed whether or not we had an appointment and he sent us back to the holding area. On the second try we spoke with a young lady behind another bulletproof armored glass cubicle. She asked "How may I help you?" A human! It was so unexpected I almost fell down. I told her what we needed, provided the documents she needed, and in about ten seconds she had copied the documents, returned them, made a note on her computer and said "That's it, you're all set, thank you." I heard a chorus of angels in the background. We thanked her profusely. Depite our good experience with the angel lady, I do not recommend that anyone visit this office. It's the idiotic procedure that is so enraging. Do it online or by mail - don't subject yourself to these stupid security procedures. I still haven't figured out why they are hiding from the public, or what they are afraid of. read more

I have no knowledge of the N.News office, thankfully it seems after reading these comments. I've been to Hampton office a couple of times. The first trip was good. I had a 30 min. visit start to finish, and personnel were helpful (one was actually courteous!) The second time I went was on behalf of my 89 year old employer. I explained to the lady what he needed to do and was answered with a monotone. "he has to come in himself". I said that was fine, but since he is approaching 90 years of age I simply was on a fact finding mission to find out everything he needed to bring, forms we could fill out ahead of time, etc. All I got was "he has to come in himself" over and over from the cranky robot woman. Also I had a letter from him authorizing me to speak on his behalf, but she wouldn't even read it. I worked at the DMV many years ago, and I never would have dreamed of treating a taxpaying citizen who was paying MY salary in such a rude way. read more

In that office you will experience a disrespectful treatment, and your waiting time is about a mystery. I visited that office in the middle of August. As soon as I passed the door a police woman shouted at me. I was taken aback and the only word I got is a very loud OUT! It turned out that they have a security check. How can you guess with no instruction at the door that you are NOT cross the threshold without an officer permission! The security woman opened even my wallet and my pen holder! What was she looking for I never learned. They make you walk through electronic gate as well. There was one window open and maybe 35-40 people waiting. I noticed inside the office two clerks sitting by the computers, looking quite bored until at a round hour they grabbed their purses and left. During my wait (40 minutes) only three persons were called. One of the costumers (with two small children) told me that that was her second visit and that she waited over 2 hours on her first visit). I left, and called 1-800 to see if I can get an appointment somewhere (all I needed to do is show my birth or naturalization document after applying on line for Medicare). They suggested to call the office and ask for an appointment. But when I called the office I was told no appointments are possible and may I come in the morning, since "morning are less crowded". Next day I came at 9:00 sharp. There were about 30 people waiting in line to be checked out (purses, wallets, papers...). Fortunately, someone suggested the office in Hampton. What a difference! A polite security officer with "Good Morning", no frisking, no metal gates, three windows open - I was done within 20 minutes! I was trying to find on line any place on SSA site where I can send my comments and complains. None exists... read more

Going to this social security office is like going to the waiting area of a prison. The security is more intense than a war zone and the rental cops are rude. You almost go through a strip search. We went there to apply for Medicare. We were the only people in the stark and unfriendly waiting room that were 65 years old. Everyone else was in their mid 20's. When called you stand by a bullet proof glass and talk through a hole. Again a lot like visiting a criminal in prison--except you are standing. In addition there was a loud speaker system that was so loud you couldn't think. For some reason we thought this office was for 65 year old workers who were applying for the benefits they worked for during their lifetime. We didn't know what the other people were doing there but assume it is for Welfare and Food Stamps. Isn't that supposed to be a separate social services office? 12 year ago when I applied for social security in Lynchburg office it was an entirely different atmosphere. No prison security, but a very friendly atmosphere where you sat across from the social Security representative. Also everyone there was applying for social security benefits, not welfare and food stamps. Regardless of what people were applying for in Newport News the atmosphere was incredibly hostile.
