Third trip was a charm. First trip had rude lady at front. I had moved so came in to change address for my DL license. Waited hours then was told no more customers that day. Returned second time and was able to do the process successfully. Weeks past by and did not receive license in mail. Called dmv rude lady was uncooperative so I asked to speak with supervisor, she told me to call the mayor because that is her boss. Returned DMV a third time, paid again for license, but was treated professionally by the staff that day, very polite and helpful. After several moths and three in person attempts, I did finally receive my updated license in the mail. Thank you to the nice ladies with the aloha spirit the third visit. read more

But no biggie, i know better so this was just a starting point. The lady was so rude. The absolute worst. Sent three checks registered they received and after 30 days my tags were not issued and could not tell me why. All insurance, safety, no violations, paid for fairly new car owned free and clear...called and called, placed on hold for hours, I was spoke to rudely, left messages up until last day so headed to kiosk. Well, I was cleaning the back of the car and discovered my tag was out of date. I was thinking I don't remember a letter. But I went to this dmv On Līpoa by the pool. There isn't t much of a Dmv sign that I saw. Go in , take a number. Hope someone couldn't wait the hour. Yes, one number & no one responded. So, there is a silent tv, the chairs are awful. Hard plastic out of the sixtys joined in set of threes. But time passed, I paid for a year of registration and a fine for expired tags. Prob better than a fix it ticket. The lady That helped me was super nice, very swift in what I needed. Under ten minutes after my number came up. And no letter? It went to a previous address and the forwarding evidently expired. The Kihei branch is friendly, small and the staff are welcoming. I had an unusual problem (so I thought) where my original registration was altered by a well-meaning relative, to reflect our new address. However, that handwritten correction negated my registration, and I was unable to complete my car's safety inspection. But a 10-minute wait, a conversation with a knowledgable staff member, with a friendly smile, I was able to resolve the issue by requesting a change of address and then paying for a replacement registration. I received my print out in minutes. The only drawbacks are the aesthetics of the office. The place is tiny, clean but the school room orange chairs and the overcrowding of filing cabinets and desks makes the place seem uncared for. However, they are due for an overhaul in July 2017, so I am hopeful that the friendly staff will get the professional environment they deserve. :) read more

Sorry here's another one I forgot to review! This move has taken over my brain y'all! Anyways here goes my review. The great thing about this place is that their new machine, you choose the options of why you're there and it gives you the option to receive a text message when you're third in line. How amazing is that? You can go about your day and get a heads up, but don't wander too far as your number may be called sooner than you think. They're located right in between the Kihei public pool and the Kihei Community Center. It is a small space for a DMV, there's usually only 3-5 cashiers. Our wait time this visit was 2 minutes! Literally 2 minutes! We were there last week on Friday, the 11th at around 12:30-1 pm. The woman that helped us was so friendly and knowledgable. As we were flying out in a few days, we asked her if we were able to fly with a temp ID and she gave us a phone number to TSA. TSA let us know that you're able to fly with an expired id up to 1 year from expiration date. Overall such a wonderful experience! read more

I went to the DMV in Kihei today because, according to the Maui DMV web site, the lines were much, much shorter than in Kahului. I brought all the necessary paperwork to transfer the registration from California to Hawaii: Out-of-state Registration Application, Completed Safety Inspection Form, old registration, new Hawaii insurance card, State form G-27, Bill of Lading from the carrier that shipped it. The lady that was supposed to help me was really rude. The first unfriendly person I've met on Maui since moving here two weeks ago. She told me that the bill of lading was not correct because it showed the departure city as San Diego on June 3rd and the destination city of Kahului with an ETA of June 9th. She told me that I needed the bill of lading that I signed when I picked the vehicle up in Kahului. When I told her I only had the one bill of lading, she said that wasn't good enough and instead of paying around $45 to register my vehicle it would be more like $345. And the real problem was that she was very rude and seemed to take great pleasure in ruining my day. A public servant shouldn't have such a rotten attitude when her job is to help the public. I'll never go back to the Kihei DMV again. What a witch! read more

I arrived this morning around 8, waited in line that was 10 deep. My turn came up after 50 minutes. I entered, the dmv lady (did'nt get name) was very courteous and she checked my documents to see if everything was in order, then she gave me a ticket and put my phone number in the system to text for when you are second in line to complete your business. I returned within 35 minutes and my turn came up. The dmv clerk, Melody, was very courteous and knowledgeable. I was able to swap out my California plates to Hawaii plates in approx. 15-20 minutes. No hassles. Great office to come to. read more

The Maui County DMV needs a major over hall. You make an appointment and get there and no sign or person to tell you you don't need to wait in the line I was in. Then finally get to the next station only to be told that their camera for driver license photos was not working. Tried to make another appointment but their crappy web site to book an appointment online and no dates show up to be able to schedule. I thought maybe because I was trying to do from phone was the problem so I tried it again on a regular computer and still the same crappy problem. I don't get it? They need a real website that actually works for the people here who pay their taxes and pay for the service we should be getting. I haven't even gotten to the point of actually doing my license yet but I am sure that will be the same shitty experience . Gee, I am sooooo looking forward to that! read more

Horrible communication & service, one of the worst DMV experiences after living in 3 different states. Upon arriving we were asked if we had the expired registration and we kindly told the lady at the desk "no it's expired, in the vehicle." She proceeded to tell us, "okay we can go off of the year of the title on the car." That was all, made it seem quite simple. After waiting TWO HOURS (with a baby) - we get to the desk & are asked for the registration, told her the same thing - it's expired in the vehicle. Well she then tells us that it's will be backed dated and around $300 a year (car is 2017), we had a picture of the registration - that wouldn't work, she had to have the "physical copy. So we told her we live 8 mins down the road, to start the process and my husband could go get it, she told us they close in 30 mins and have gave out of the tickets for the day. She said to come back tomorrow or make an appointment. Moral of the story is - the lady checking us in wasn't respectful enough to tell us ANYTHING. Then disrespectful when we questioned her they played dumb and acted like she didn't know that was her job. Thank you for wasting our time. read more

I have always had a really good experience at this DMV. I feel like they are knowledgeable, efficient and help as much as they can. They always make sure you know what you need to finish what you need to get done that visit. Now they have texting updates, so if the wait is longer, you can actually go about your day and come back when its almost your turn, super helpful. read more

Sure, the lines were longer than usual because of the pandemic, but everything was set up to function as briskly as possible. Everyone was masked and separated so I felt safe. In general, DMVs are the butt of jokes and iconic examples of long waits, impersonal service, and frustration. None of this applies to the Kihei office by the Aquatic Center. I have been there three times over a couple years and each time the people I've dealt with have been warm, friendly, and helpful.
