Good luck trying to apply for social security benefits. It's a nightmare. You can't get an in person appointment until April. You have to go downtown because it's based on zip code and if you try to do it on line you have to scan all your documents and the guy I talked to said that on line applications only work about 50% of the time. So tomorrow I'm driving to Worthington to see if I can make an in person appointment there for April. The documents they require are your SS Card, your Birth Certificate, your W-2's & your divorce papers. Also I can't actually make an April appointment till this Thursday or Friday. Once I scheduled an appointment @ 3:45 & waited a month,( called 1 Hr prior to going) The desk clerk told me my appointment was not in their system & if I can not show prof I need to schedule one. Even called security on me for sitting in the lobby calling Social Security. Social Security answered @4:05 said my appointment was in the system the desk clerk failed to look for it. The next day. After calling the 800 number provided on the social security site, they advised me to call this office directly. After calling the direct office number I was given instruction to walk-in to get my name changed after getting married. However, once getting to the office, taking a number, and waiting for 45 mins the person at the window said they can't help me because it is required to have an appointment. This was after speaking to someone on the phone from this exact office to walk-in. The oblivious worker at the window told me to drive 30 miles north to go to another office! No honey, that's not how that works. Poor communication, poor service, poor understanding, poor processes. If I could give this office zero stars, I would. read more

My sister haven't been able to access her card for over a week because I've been on hold more than 4 hours all week trying to get someone to answer the phone at Direct Express and I emailed them what they requested and have been back and forth with seven emails and all they say is we are working on it and we'll get back to you within 3 to 5 hours which they never do. read more

Well, it takes forever to signup to get your social security card replaced! It's 21/2 hours that I will never get back! And it took a total of 10 minutes to get the new card ordered! We waited for a long time and watched many people leave and give up their place in line! Most left saying that they didn't have time to wait. Apparently they have never gone to a government office to try to get something done! As we entered the building to sign in, you are greeted by a security guard and a bottle of hand sanitizer! (We were here before any of the stay home orders were put into place.) I was excited to see that you were able to put in the information as to why you needed to be there into a computer. Once you had finished answering the questions you were then given your number. The numbers were displayed on a electronic message board so that you were able to see that your number was coming up soon. I am so happy that I won't have to go back anytime soon! I received my card in about 10 days. So if you need to go to the Social Security office anytime soon, take a book to read to occupy your time! But no drinks are allowed! read more

I've called multiple times and only once! Has there been a friendly, helpful voice on the other end of the phone (jordan, the office supervisors) I'm well aware of the pandemic we are in, I myself am a essential worker. But I'm genuinely fed up with majority of the employees that work for this office. Their attitudes are extremely frustrating when I am simply just trying to get answers! I'm not sure why the staff thinks it's "okay" to treat customers with blunt disrespect and disregard for their situation. I've had this issue for almost 3 months now, 3 MONTHS! I've done everything I've been instructed to do. Not only did they mail me back my application, needing additional information. But they didn't mail me back my birth certificate. So I called, and the guy told me to "mail in my hard copy ID" okay, no biggie right? WRONG this man said "just a warning, if you mail in your ID there is a chance it could be lost" Seriously? SSReview I have been working towards retirement for many years! Haven't we all? Haha. I am finally ready and have chosen a specific date & have been making the necessary arrangements so the transition will go smoothly. First I called their toll-free # for appointments only. I live about the same distance from 2 of their offices so I figured that would give me double the chances of getting a convenient appointment time. Would you believe I called at the end of July and was told the earliest appointment was mid October. I said, I'll take it!!! When you go, it's important to have the correct documents. I needed my driver's license, my Social Security card OR my birth certificate (original or a certified copy) proof of citizenship, your military service papers (DD214 is good to bring) if applicable and your W-2 form for the previous year from your employer(s). That was it and most of it is common sense anyway. I also took a copy of my marriage license and my passport just to be on the safe side. Now fast forward to yesterday. I walked in the building and the guard told me to register with Self Serve computer. It asks for your name, ssn, if you have an appointment yes or no, and what you want to see someone about. (It's much like the one at the BMV.) I tried to take a photo of the inside of the building but I wasn't allowed. Then the guard told me I wasn't allowed to have a drink in the office. I said Even tho it has a lid? He said yes, even with a lid. I said ok & he said he was sorry & I said it's ok. It's not your rule, right? He smiled and said Yes Ma'am. He was very pleasant & I noticed he was very nice to everyone who came in. Anyway I took my watercup back to the car and came back in and took a seat. I waited between 5-10 minutes and they announced my name over the PA System. I went back up to the guard and he gave me the number of the office to go to. I went back and the Case Manager introduced herself and we sat down and started talking. She was so nice, very friendly and was able to talk and type at the same time. Great at multitasking! We talked, she asked me questions, and I had a list of questions which she was able to answer fully. The whole time she was really pleasant. I don't know what I was expecting but I was pleasantly surprised! The building is fairly new, maybe 5-6 years old. There is a McDonald's right next door, but if you get a drink, you will have to chug it bc you can't take it inside. Haha! If you are on Worthington Woods Blvd and driving eastbound, it will be on your right, (south side of the road) with the McDonald's just past it. The building is new enough that it doesn't feel like it's going to crumble. It has a nice bathroom and although almost every seat was taken, no one was standing. For those without an appointment, the guard told me it was a 3-3 1/2 hour wait. Boy am I glad I made an appointment back in July! Overall, I'd say it was a very pleasant experience! And bonus: I found out I am getting more than I was expecting! Not a lot more but hey, more is more, right? read more

Well let me say that I was pleasantly surprised at this whole experience. It got off to a shaky start when I tried to call to set up an appointment and would wait on the phone for 45 minutes only to be hung up on but luckily it got better from there. Pro tip: skip the phone call. It was a lot better just showing up. First of all, just know that whatever SS branch you go to is going to be packed. It's all about how they manage it though. I showed up 20 minutes before opening and there was a line down the sidewalk already. But the security guard who was managing on this day gave everyone the information on what would happen inside once it opened so that we were ready to rock and roll once 9 o'clock came. He was really helpful - being firm enough to actually keep things moving but empathetic enough to be kind and not frustrating. I waited for about 35 minutes then inside. There was a decent amount of seating and everything was clean. When I was finally called, the representative who helped me was incredibly friendly and he got all of my stuff processed in about 5 minutes. Definitely come prepared with all the forms filled out and your documents ready and this place won't be as emotionally taxing as other government facilities. read more

Stopped here to get a replacement card. You check-in at a kiosk and get a receipt with a letter and seemingly random number. The security guard has a good feel for how long it will take. He indicated it was an hour to an hour and a half before me and the people around me would be called to one of the windows or desks. It was an hour and fifteen minutes. That's pretty accurate. The waiting area has 29 chairs. You can make an appointment but hardly anyone did so at one point there was about 40 of us crammed into that room leaning against walls and into corners. Several people had family with them which is why it was standing room only at one point. The security guard is there to keep the noise levels down (no loud music) and prevent anyone from blocking the door. Tip: Starting sometime in 2017 they anticipate being a state that will allow you to request a replacement card online. read more

I have been trying for 5 weeks to get them to answer the phone so I dropped by the office and was stopped by the security guard who told me that I needed an appointment. I told him that I have been calling for 5 weeks and he said that I would just have to keep trying. I said that I keep getting cut off. He said that I could stand there and argue with him all I wanted, but he would just keep telling me the same thing. I went home and called Troy Balderson's office. They told me they have gotten MANY of the same complaints and have been trying to get social security to open back up. They sent me a privacy release form and his office will now advocate on my behalf. Opinion - They are using covid as an excuse to not work at all. Compared to Troy I waited 30 minutes because I come right before they were about to close. The issue was I didn't have everything I needed to change my last name. Therefore, I have to come back on Monday to finish up the process. Although the guys there were super nice including the security guard. The guy I saw was Eli and since I didn't have everything today to change my last name, but I'm coming back right when they open on Monday at 9 AM. You will need something because the wait is long. You will get a number like A, B, E, V. B, does not take that long if you get that one. My dad who lost his wallet this week also had to replace his card and his process was much easier than mine. Hopefully a good Samaritan will return my dads wallet. So far no one has returned it.:( Otherwise this is a good location and if you ever need to come here you will go through a quick process once you see someone. read more

No idea about a typical day at this location, but anyone should know you need to expect a 45min-2hr wait (at least in my experience) at any SS Office usually. I took a laptop with me expecting that wait. Got there 4 minutes before opening on a snowy Tuesday and there were already 12 people in line. Again, this is typical. Unfair to rate the place poorly when anyone knows you are going to have a wait. You sign in at a kiosk and take a number, sit in a chair and wait, no brainer. I was out in 20 minutes, nothing short of miraculous in my experience, and the guy at the window was super pleasant and helpful. Needed a name change on my card and hadn't brought the right divorce paperwork, he took care of it right there for me. Amazing. Big con though - there's like no parking at this location, and a sign on their door saying if you park anywhere other than their lot you'll get towed. I'd have someone drop you off if you're going during peak hours if possible. read more

After two weeks later they told me they mailed and havent received any of my documents nor my social security card . The agent who helped me was also professional and gave me good guidance without me having to ask for it. This place is not a fun way to spend 70 minutes. But, this place is nice inside with comfortable seats if you get here when less people are here. The place is nicer than the office in Georgesville with better parking. You can also walk to McDonalds while waiting. Tehe security guard is super helpful and nice as well. I enjoyed the customer service rep that i talked to and even though I waited 70 minutes, it isnt too bad. Their bathrooms are clean and usable. Overall I would rather come here than go to the one on Georgeville. Maybe next time I will try the one downtown to be able to fully rate each office. I would say one should come right at 9 to cut down on the wait. The line was also smaller after 11, but lunch break is also over these hours so there might be less reps open. read more

As with most people I was expecting the worst, so I turned up at this office a little before closing time thinking I would be served a lot faster. My wait was about 1/2 hr which was ok & the guy who served me was pleasant. (The same guy served me on a previous occasion which was not a pleasant experience) Anyway the place was quiet for a busy office & the security guard was excellent; helping the staff by calling out numbers, directing people to the correct desk & asking people to turn down their cell phones. This SSA office is par for the course. The registration kiosk is convenient and support is excellent. The waiting area seats 30 people, so you may have to stand for awhile. You are able to easily go outside if you need to take a cell phone call or get some fresh air. I waited over two hours to be called. If you make an appointment ahead of time, your wait time should be much shorter. The scheduling system is efficient. The staff and the guard were both friendly and very helpful. Overall, it was a positive experience and much better than long wait times on the SSA phone line. read more
