My friend and I went to Social Taco for an early lunch. It's located in Homewood in a cute courtyard. Shortly after we were seated, chips and salsa were brought to our table. The chips were seasoned well and the salsa was fresh. We had good service, but we could tell our server was new. He was a little slow and we had to repeat ourselves a few times, but he made an effort to do his best job. The menu has a lot of unique options and I had a hard time narrowing down what I wanted to order. I ended up ordering the Gringa Bonita salad, and it was really fresh. The chicken was cooked well and the portion was large. My friend is gluten free and she ordered a quesadilla. Our waiter took her gluten allergy very seriously and checked with the kitchen multiple times to answer her questions and reassure her. We also ordered queso and it was delicious. I decided to come here on a Saturday because I saw on their website that they had happy hour every day from 3 PM to 6 PM. To my dismay when I got there and asked the server about the happy hour specials he told me that they stopped doing it on the weekends. I was a little disappointed. I ended up getting a frozen espresso that was very delicious. The elite was yummy as well. I got some sort of a steak bowl however, the steak was a little chewy. It's right in the downtown of Homewood where there's other restaurants around as well. There is plenty of free parking. The restaurant is decorated very nice and the bathrooms were very clean. I have to admit when I first visited Social Taco was when it first opened, and I really wasn"t impressed. It was expensive and you didn't get a lot of food. The only reason, I went back was because we won a gift card at a fundraiser. My recent visit was totally different! It was a great experience and I'm really glad I gave Social Taco a second chance. I started the night off with their strawberry coconut mocktail. It was amazing!! Next we ordered a side of the charro beans as an appetizer to dip the chips in. I highly recommend doing this. The combo was great. We also ordered the Mexican street corn as an appetizer. We thought it would be off the cob, and were planning to also use it as a dip with the chips. But, it came out as four cobs. It still was really good, but I was glad we ordered the beans. For my main meal, I ordered the Grilled Cheese Al Pastor Pork Tacos! So delicious. In a city with tons of great Mexican food, Social Taco greatly missed the mark. I ordered Quesabirria. The tacos looked good but had clearly been sitting for an extended period before being delivered to the table. The tortillas had totally disintegrated and were a grey, mushy mess in the bottom. The flavor was okay but nothing great. The consume was totally under seasoned and served in such a small cup, you couldn't dip the tacos. 2 beers, 3 tacos was almost $50 with tip. That's insanity. I came here recently with a friend for happy hour. When we got there, it was a line. However, it moved by so quickly and we were told we would have a small wait. The hostess was very nice and courteous. So we went to sit at the bar. Our bartender was super helpful and made great recommendations. So we gave up our table and stayed at the bar. We ended up ordering drinks and food. We ordered chicken feathers, Mexican pizza with steak and loaded street fries. The food was great. Each order was a great amount of food for the price. The fries were so good and while they were loaded, it was the right balance. The Mexican pizza was packed with flavor, but not overwhelming. It was also light and not thick. My friend and me came to Social Taco to check out their happy hour (on a Friday). We arrived with like 30 mins left before happy hour ended. I'm soooo glad we spotted two seats at the bar as it was going to be a 30 min wait for a table. No thanks. Happy hour would have been over by then. Hannah was our server at the bar. She did an amazing job in getting our space cleaned off and taking our drink/ food orders within the HH window. We started with chips and salsa. I really like how crispy their chips were and the salsa was the perfect thickness and flavor! We ordered house margaritas to drink . They were ok. I prefer frozen margaritas so I ordered a strawberry frozen marg. for my 2nd drink and it was enjoyable and more tasty. The happy hour here is awesome! 1/2 price apps and drinks from 3-6 daily. The blood orange pomegranate margarita was my favorite but we also got queso, quesadilla nachos, spring rolls, elote, and ranch water! Tons of other options on the menu sounded great, too. There is a parking structure attached to the building that was super easy to get in and out of and saved us from trying to search for street parking. Overall the food was fine, but the ambiance of sitting outside on a beautiful day having great drinks is what made our experience so nice. I went to social taco for the first time last Friday. I was not impressed. The restaurant was pretty packed which is perfectly fine with me. But the tables are extremely close. You can not get by without almost bumping them. The food was mediocre in my opinion. I got the pastor torta and my boyfriend got one of the shrimp bowls. The pastor was not good in my opinion and he was not happy with his portion size. I did love the fries. They were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I made lunch plans with a friend and wanted to give Social Taco another try. I have heard such good reviews. So I went back again. The second time around was much better. We adore this place and come pretty regularly on Tuesdays for the tacos; did the same this week and was met with a new menu that has gotten rid of fish entirely, higher prices, and smaller portions. Honestly, the food was amazing and as a California native that's saying a lot for tacos in Alabama. However, I'm upset with the service. My husband is a very generous tipper but I had to put a limit on his generosity because of the way we were ignored and denied a positive experience. We initially asked to be seated outside and as far from others as possible due to our 4yr being with us and we know how loud and rambunctious he can be (we aren't raising an iPad kid). We were told "No, the section is blocked off" upon entry. Only to see a family of 10 and a family of 2 adults and 2 dogs be seated in "the blocked" section after us. However, being the laid back Cali native I am we ate our food, sat, and wait for our waiter to remember we existed to bring the check. It took so long my husband started to hunt for our waiter. All in all it took 30-45mins of us sitting watching other waiters take over our waiter's table and see our waiter care for other newly seated tables for us to receive a check and leave. Consequently, I will never dine here again because a business only has one time to show me how little I and my family are valued in a space where my husband spends his money. I just quietly write my review based on my anecdotal experience and decide rather a business is worth my patron. I wanted to like place so badly but I cannot and will not be treated as less of a priority than other customers. I'd eat from Taco Bell before I do that. One star is for the food. read more

I think some people will come here like me thinking it's like SoHo Social (which I'm a fan of) and be a little disappointed. As it is, the menu is pretty basic. If I wanted a robust menu, I'd just go to SoHo Social. If I wanted street tacos, I'd go find a taco truck/shop off Green Springs Highway. If I want American Mexican, I'd go to Taco Mama. All of these options have better value at their respective price points. This place has been on my list of new places to try ever since it first opened up. I've seen so many pics of their cute and funny decor. I got to come yesterday for lunch with my friend Casi. I saw all the funny decor like the "Save Water, Drink Tequila sign", "Eat tacos or the devil will get you", and "Eat Tacos Be Social". I was however thinking the chairs and tables were a bit dated. I think this place could be so much cuter with updated furniture. Our waitress was nice and got us our food and drinks in a timely manner. However I'm not sure if she refilled my water. I usually don't care whether they come and refill it one time of five times, but I ran out of water towards the end of the meal so I did happen to notice that as that doesn't happen often. We started off with complimentary chips and salsa. I really liked the chips in that they were much crisper and crunchier than I've had at other places. We then shared an order of green chile queso. It was delicious and a huge portion! We ate a lot, but couldn't even finish it between the two of us. Maybe a group of 3 or 4 could. The we ordered steak asada quesadillas. For $17, I was expecting a higher quality steak. I have had better steak quesadillas at other Mexican restaurants for about half the price a la carte. The way the quesadilla was cut was also hard to eat as the steak and quesadilla filling kept coming out of both sides while I was trying to eat it. The guacamole was great, I finished all of that. The crema and green salsas that came with it were great too. I really enjoyed those! Overall, it did not quite meet my expectations as much as I wanted it to be my new go to place for tacos and Mexican food. My total after tax and tip was $27.30 for a quesadilla, 1/2 a bowl of queso, and just water. This place is incredible!! The menu is pretty big and has many options other than tacos. Before our meal was brought out, our waiter brought us chips and salsa that had to have been homemade. Once we ordered, our food came out very quickly. The portions are pretty big and totally reasonable for the price. I ordered the Casa salad and added pork to it- it was incredible and full of flavor. Sunday Brunch at Social Taco in Birmingham/ Homewood was amazing. There are two dozen small plates to choose from. Share amongst the table and then order something else. A friend and I finally made it here after wanting to try it for a while. We went on taco Tuesday because...duh! I got a frozen margarita and it was great, good flavor and not too watery.
