Went there today and walked up to one of the counters. You couldn't get too close to look in because the place was cluttered. The guy behind the counter was watching a video on his phone. I got his attention after waiting a little. I asked him about a Supro Fuzz pedal I saw and he said [with an annoyed tone ] "what about it?" I was ready to leave just then but held my displeasure. Zero Stars!!!! I wanted to sell a guitar effects pedal which goes for around $200 brand new. Okay that said, I called them prior to selecting them and explained what I have. Told them everything and they said " come down we'll take it"... exact words over the phone. I went there and introduced myself and said I called an hour ago and presented the pedal... then the question was asked... "how much do you want for it?" I said give me 1/2 the price and everyone makes out. Then the low balling started... I said show me where it sold for $25.00 when everyone else is selling it for $200 or more... then he says I should sell it on FB.... I get the haggling and all of that but wasting time to make sure they can sell it for a ridiculously high mark up and to ruin a working man's lunch hour is unacceptable in my opinion. The best part is the fact the one person said "really? You don't want to give him $100?" Told me all I needed about the service that place provides.... Like they say... sucker born everyday and that's who society hill takes advantage of... it's a shame because they looked like they had some nice things but it's probably overpriced and fake most likely... never ever would I go back or recommend them to anyone..... Strange that I decided to write a review of a pawn shop; maybe I'm getting desperate or maybe I'm just running out of new places to review? Meh. I'm not much for trying new things when there are already places out there that I love and compare everything else to so when I wanted to buy a new bass a couple years ago and I wasn't exactly in the market for something in the figures involving a comma after the first number nor was I satisfied with the little league specials at Sam Ash that were in my market range I decided to hit up some pawn shops in the area. There really is only one that carries a good line of instruments and it is the same pawn shop I have been staring at every time I get off of the 47 bus going to South Street. Put it this way, I am partial to the neighborhood since I did and still am growing up a South Street kid so I was stoked when I found the perfect four string Fender precision bass and amp for three hundred total. The bass was in perfect condition so I am assuming someone got desperate for money or just didn't like the gift mommy and daddy gave them. The amp was a little dinged but worked and still works great and is a conveniently portable should I need to actually take it out of my house. The people working there are your typical pawn shop dude types, the kind that remind you of walking into a jewelry shop and hound you so that they can get the commission...except maybe a little worse at times. but once you put it out there that you know what you want and what you want to spend they kind of back off. There are TONS of guitars and woodwind instruments hanging along with your typical trashy gold jewelry and other shit people hock. I went for the strings and nothing more and probably would just stick to that anyway. There is also the coolest camo colored gun shaped guitar in the window that is the closest thing to a Ted Nugent wet dream you could ever see in your life so you have to just stop by and stare if anything. I'd say I'm a fan simply for the convenience and good deals. So if little Johnny wants to be a rock star and you don't want to break the bank swing by and see what they have. read more

Talk about going above and beyond. I had (stupidly) left a camera bag with over a $800 worth of equipment at a bus stop. Someone brought it here with the intention to sell, but was turned away after some questioning by the men behind the counter. In an attempt to contact me, they looked through my photos and called a number they found in a picture of a clients place of business. Long story short, I was contacted by my client that they had my camera, and that I could pick it up. These guys could of easily taken in the gear and tried to make a sale, but they took the time to find the owner. They turned my crappy day into a great one. Thank you! read more

2nd review. I'll keep it short since 1st one got deleted. This place is the worst. A few points. 1.The bald guy with the glasses is a an unnecessarily nasty and smug person. 2.You work in a pawn shop essentially hawking stolen gear pawned by local junkies. 3.You aren't an authority figure. 4. Your stuff isn't really anything special and your place is a dump. 5. You don't really have anything to be smug about to people who might spend money. 6. You aren't impressing anybody by being rude and trying to embarrass someone in front of someone else. 7. You never know who you might rub the wrong way. I genuinely hate people who try to talk down to you for a laugh. I literally had $1000 in cash in my pocket plus a few credit cards ready to spend on a guitar I liked, a case and maybe an amp head. But the A-hole with the glasses thought it would be funny to talk down to me. I guess that's what happens when you entire livelihood is built on dealing with junkies and selling stolen merchandise for inflated prices. You become worse than the people you deal with by proxy. If anybody ever has a piece of gear or jewelry stolen it will most likely end up at this place because that's the type of people they are. Let this be an abject lesson. If you think you are too good for a place like this, you are. You can find whatever they have literally anywhere else if you look, and I can guarantee when you find it, the place won't reek of homeless urine and old Chinese food. As much as I like small places and pawn shop treasures and such, I need to be reminded that "oh yeah, some of these people a living scum." This place exemplifies it best. read more

Dont even bother wasting your time. Ive been here to sell electronics multiple times and never once was I able to succeed. It's amazing that every item they rejected from me I was able to sell with a breeze from a store on S 7th street, or market street. Frustrated with their complete lack of knowledge on electronics, as they seek the help of eBay and Google to look up information, I will never even attempt to set foot in this store again. read more

Showed up 3 minutes before closing to pick up an item we already paid for and manager actually locked the door while waving no and refusing to answer phone. Got a fantastic deal on a great acoustic guitar. Not only did Eric help me find one that suited my budget and playing level, but he threw in a capo, extra strings, and a case. I left the shop with a great guitar and even the nostagia of it's own individual history and the story of the former owner who had purchased it in 1971 and given it some of the character which I only hope to be able to add to. I hope I can pass it along one day myself when I need to upgrade to super high-end model before I take stage at arenas across the land. Seriously, great place! great guys. Thank you Society Hill Loan! I had 3 guitars stolen out of the trunk if my car. I called around to local pawn shops and thankfully, Society Hill Loan was one that I called. Right off the bat, I was impressed by how attentive and helpful the person on the phone was. Immediately upon hearing my situation, he, Eric I believe, asked for my phone number and about the missing instruments. A few hours later, amazingly, I received a call from the owner, Nat, telling me they had the guitars and that they'd called the police. I just picked up the instruments with zero hassle. I'm so relieved to have them back. I spent about a half hour checking out the gear while I was there. Great selection of instruments and wide range of quality depending on what your looking for. Mics, guitars, horns, recording, keyboards, live sound. More like a music store than a regular pawn shop. Throughout my years in Philadelphia, I haven't found a music shop for relatively decent and affordable gear with a varied and evolving inventory quite like Society Hill Pawn. Eric, the designated music guru, is who I've dealt with most exclusively. He is down to earth, highly knowledgeable yet unpretentious, reasonable, and fun to talk to. I've made numerous purchases whether it be guitar pedals, a bass, or amplifier (whether practice sized or larger) and have always gone home satisfied. Beyond that, I had a friend who had their gear stolen, and when they went around letting pawn shops know to be on the look out, the Society Hill guys paid attention and called the crook out. unbelievable, went in for a beginners guitar, guy was very helpful and friendly, I trusted he was a professional in his dept, which appeared to be guitars. I liked one bought it for 150.00 came home very happy, then noticed it wasn't holding a tune very long, called him and was told to bring it back, but b4 I did I looked it up to see how much I would have paid new for it, low and behold it was right there 149.99 for the same damn guitar, I printed it out, took it to dude and showed him the printout, and said I would like to keep the guitar but it must have been an error to charge me for a used guitar what it cost to buy it new, giving him the benefit of the doubt. I told him to reduce the price perhaps 50 or 60 dollars and I would keep it So I couldn't believe it when he told me that he would NOT lower the price that he could sell it "ALL DAY LONG" he said for 150 dollars. He told me he didn't "NEED" the money, he would rather REFUND my money. YIKES!! I am grateful he refunded my money, but got plenty of attitude as if I did something dishonest to him. Plus he told me he would rather continue to overcharge even though i brought him a printout from guitar shoppe. JEEZE, u think they would actually look something up on the computer so that they aren't accused of rippin people off, maybe they don't have internet, that is the only reason I can imagine, or they just DONT GIVE A SHIT, YEAH I THINK THATS IT!! I don't know about all the other things they sell, but my guitar is in good condition and I love it.
