My first order was for partial mash Goldy McGoldface. It's a smooth, high alcohol beer that goes down dangerously easy. I just put Quady McQuadface in the bottle and I'm about to crack it. That order came with an exploded container of LME. They quickly sent some DME to replace what I couldn't salvage, so great customer service. Now I'm just deciding on my next kit! As of 8/8 these guys are closed. Went over today and there was a ton of random stuff and supplies th round around out-front, it looked like a homeless camp. There were 2 woman there I suspect watching the stuff and they said they had been kicked out of their building. Seems petty weird. Ok, so I don't actually come here for homebrew stuff, but I DO come for their CO2. They refill your tank rather than an exchange (because I don't want someone else's old ugly canister) and are quicker and cheaper than the gas places. read more

Went in this afternoon at lunch to check this place out. Fantastic store - very fun to see all the stuff in stock. They filled my CO2 tank. Fair price and they know how to do it the right way (not everyone knows how to fill safely or they short you). The best local homebrew store, hands down. Friendlier, more knowledgeable, and more geared to local customers than the big dogs up north. The often have a better hops selection too. The only issue (for me anyway) is the location... still worth the trip across town though! read more

As far as local homebrew shops in Austin go, this is my favorite. The staff is friendly and they have a good selection considering they don't have a huge store. Do they have everything, no. But they don't need everything. They have all you need to get started in brewing, wine making, cheese making, kegging, bottling, etc. Homebrewing is actually pretty easy. It does take some research and some preparation but you'll be brewing some good stuff pretty quickly if you get your gear from these guys. I like how they recognize us when we come in. Which is pretty frequently. They also brew there on site so you can see stuff in action. Fun hobby and I feel good supporting this place because it's locally owned. I'm so happy this place is here! I've just recently gotten deep into the beer brewing hobby, and I couldn't have had any success without them. They've been very eager to helpfully answer my questions, and they don't try to sell me extra junk I don't need. Prices are fair and usually the same as online. There are two things on my wish list for soco homebrew. One is a better recipe system. I did one recipe from them and it had just enough typos in it to make me wonder what they really meant. Two is a better website, with ability to buy items, or at least see what's available in-store. read more

We have needed a Homebrew supply store in South Austin for many years....Well Merry Xmas to me! Not only is the location a plus for many of us, the selection they have to choose from is stellar! Sadly, my other go to in Austin struggled to keep standard grains in stock. So far, this has not been an issue with SOCO. Chris and company are very knowledgeable and friendly. I love the fact that this is a self serve model where you can measure out and crush your own grains. I've found my new Homebrew store from this point going forward. Cheers! I'm so happy these guys opened a store in South Austin. Not nearly the size of the other homebrew shop in Austin, but with much more focus on the local customers. The other place makes their living on shipping all over the country and locals often show up to find they're out of items regularly. SoCo Homebrew has always had everything I need in stock, and now they're even stocking Blacklands Malt from Leander! If you've never brewed with this local malt, you're missing out and SoCo Homebrew is the place to get it. Every experience I've had there has been awesome, and I always get into some good brewing conversations with the guys there, as they're all accomplished homebrewers and really know what the customer needs. Hands down best service i have received from any store, not just brew supply. I live a few towns south of Austin and typically use there website to make my purchases and have them shipped rather than making the drive. One of the employees drove an hour to my house to personally deliver one of my recent shipments and threw in a free hat, how amazing is that??? There is no better spot for everything home-brew. There's a couple of reviews on here that don't have the best things to say about service and the recipe system. I can't disagree more. These guys have walked me through extract to all grain. I bought my first real all grain system from them and they did their own brew in-store with me there to show me how it works. I have probably called them a million times and each time they help me out. This is the best place in Austin to get what you need for home-brew. I didn't get near the service I needed when I used to go to Austin home-brew, which is not even under local ownership anymore. This place has everything you need. read more

I struggled on rating this store on 2 vs 3. I have been there twice and the first time there were 3 employees there and 3 customers including myself. I wandered around the place for about 5 minutes before I was helped but from that point on the service was great. I went back about 2 weeks ago and there were 2 employees and myself only in the entire store. It was like I was invisible. After about 5 minutes doing the usual wander, I asked for help but I was very much made to feel like I was imposing on them. No smile, no enthusiasm and no thank you! It felt like I was pulling teeth! I have also been to Austin Homebrew twice and have had excellent over-the-top service each time so Soco has some catching up to do. read more
