4 adults tried SoDoSoPa for first time on a Friday. We arrived about 5 pm. There were maybe a half dozen other customers at that time. We were cheerily greeted upon entry and were allowed to select our own seats. Our server appeared promptly and was quite friendly and helpful. We had the Southern Rangoon as an appetizer; eight bite-sized, fun and tasty pieces. Two of our party ordered their pulled pork main dish with two sides each (fries/broccoli/collard greens/red beans & rice), one ordered a pulled pork sandwich with fries, one ordered a Cuban sandwich with collard greens as a side. The pulled pork was tasty but a little on the dry side. The sides were quite good. The Cuban sandwich made with two slices of white bread for the top and bottom instead of a panini-type roll. It was disappointing. We were allowed to sit and visit, so we occupied the table for about an hour and a half without being pestered. By the time we left, the place was starting to fill up. Although the food missed the mark for us, the service and atmosphere were both good. We agreed to give SoDoSoPa another try this summer. The restaurant was clean. read more

The brisket Platter was Great!!!! The balance of fat and meat was excellent with rich flavor. The fries and tots were excellent. The Chief came out to follow up with his excellent culinary product, I appreciate this because it shows great care and pride in his food. It's always great to conduct quality control. read more

We were traveling down 95 and needed a lunch stop... this place was only a few minutes off the highway. We like BBQ quite a lot, and this place was on point. Brisket, pulled pork, and ribs were among the best BBQ we've had. Ribs were dry smoked, and they honestly didn't need sauce they were so good on their own. But they have 4 sauces - blueberry chipotle was a favorite of ours. Potato cake was to die for! Think mashed potatoes that are fried on a griddle. Collards were yummy, nice and hammy (because I'm a health nut). Servings were plentiful and service was really good. Sorry no pics....too hungry and too yummy. read more

Delicious food and friendly staff! We started with the hog cakes, omg out of this world delicious! My teens ordered the beast feast. They loved it! They really enjoyed trying the different sauces, they were quite tasty! My husband got the meatloaf, that's what I will order next time, it was scrumptious! I had the cheesesteak, it was tasty as well. Red beans and rice are spicy so beware! Mac & cheese was the only thing that was not our favorite. Pickles are Housemade and OMG, delicious! You can buy them to take home too! Gotta love a good pickle! Friendly folks and great atmosphere. We will definitely return. read more

Back before Covid 19 shut everything down, we drove the 40 or so minutes to Smithfield. Just wanting to go somewhere different. On the first visit (I believe in February), I ordered the southern ragoons, which I loved, but the Yankee bf, not. I got shrimp and grits, and he got the brisket platter with the tater cake and mac & cheese. We both had the creme brulee for dessert. Shrimp and grits tasted great. Brisket and tater cake he loved. Mac & cheese just okay. Creme brulee tastes great, BUT is either not fixed on site or is, and then kept very cold, so even the brulee part is cold. Again, still tastes great. After the 'Rona, we drove back down to dine again, visit an adorable store, the Oak City collection, and the store at Cracker Barrell. This time the partner in dining got the panini...Reuben or pastrami and LOVED it. I mean, LOVED it. Got that tater cake again and it was wonderfully crispy. I got the meatloaf, good, but not my favorite meatloaf ever. My sides were that tater cake and collards. For the owner to be from Colorado, those collards were really good! Tried the seasonal dessert, a S'mores cake, just okay to me. PID got the brulee again....like I said, tasted good. On to the most recent visit....PID (partner in dining) got the ribeye and both sides tater cakes...steak was overcooked, and the tater cakes not correctly fried crispy. Just lumps of slightly browned tater. New steak came out, still over, but not by much. Tater cakes were the SAME ones, so by now cold and inedible. I got the grilled pork steak thing (a huge pork chop) and it was awesome! I mean, tender and flavorful. I originally got collards and string beans as I call them, but they were NOT "Southern" they were the stiff ones that I prefer to have sauteed with some garlic and plenty of olive oil and/or butter. Switched out for a 2nd collard. So, for ME, it's at least a 4, for the PID, they are now down to a it's going to be a long, long time before I go again. Give them a try....they will take your food back. I think he should have complained about those nasty tater cakes, but I also can't help but think the staff should have switched them when the new steak came. read more

We thought we would enjoy our dinner but our hog cakes were overcooked. The chicken was undercooked and the meatloaf was questionable. Was feeling sick before I left the restaurant. Husband was sick by 2 am with vomiting and diarrhea for 9 hours. And I did not feel so well. Wasn't sure if we could continue our journey home. Called them to tell them of our concern for food poisoning and they offered a refund but it has been 6 weeks with no response. BEWARE! read more

I usually only give out 4 stars except in places like this. If your ever in the area stop in and have a bit to eat our server (I'll come back and comment later) took our drink order and then food. While waiting the owner came over and asked how we were and told us some history about the building and about him menu. My mother in law had the soup special pork chili she said it was very good when the owner was over he told us he had extra pork from a catering job and didn't know what to do with it so he made the soup said he ordered more pork to make even more soup because everyone liked it so much. I had the country fried chicken it was fabulous ordered the gravy on the side to keep the chicken crispy. The fried potato cake is there potato salad just fried in a cake it was good need just a little more seasoning and make the cake crispier on both sides. The wife had the meat special a sampler of the chicken brisket and bbq they need to make it like $2-3.cheaper if you order the sampler plate to make it more appealing because when you order each extra item is the same price to add an item if it were to cost a little less more people would look at it and not question it and see the value to getting the sampler instead of two items. Ok back to the waitress I know this is just a small town and wearing shorts doesn't matter but she is working in a nice restaurant and the shorts she had on were not appropriate for this restaurant maybe a bar or hooters this would be acceptable but in a small town restaurant that lawyers, business people and out of town travelers that read about the restaurant on yelp stop in for dinner or lunch something more appropriate for the business. Again the food was delicious and when ever back in town we will stop in and eat again. I think it's great that the owners grand mother works for him. read more

In Smithfield for one night and we had a good dinner in this lovely restaurant. Service was very good, with a friendly waitress telling us about the area. We shared a barbecued rib and chicken combo dinner with tater tots (yum)! The sauce was very good, thick and sweet with a little tang and everything was well cooked. This restaurant has declined in food quality and menu offerings. I had the southern fried Rangoons and there was no pulled pork to the taste, they were dry and seemed that they had been frozen for too long. As they were fried but hard. NOT GOOD! Also no brisket on the menu. Very disappointing. While the collards were great, the rest of our meal experience left us wanting. Sorry to see this happening to a previously good restaurant. The fired pickles were sliced too thin and therefore too greasy from the frying. NOT GOOD! read more

Round 2 at SoDoSoPa and it was just as amazing the 2nd time round. Jessica, my waitress was friendly and attentive without being overly so and catered to my every need. Jasmine, the bartender, made THE BEST Moscow Mule Ive ever had. Then I asked her to do me a dealers choice cocktail and she made me a Bay Breeze that was absolutely delightful. I forgot his name because I had to run an errand after but the kitchen manager came by my table and gave me a pleasant, personal checking on/touch (which makes one feel really special.) Last, but definitely not least, if you go see if the chef Chris is working. I asked him to "make my burger as he would for himself" and I was NOT dissappointed. One of the finest burgers I've had in ages, perfectly cooked, seasoned and topped. (Stuck with Tots and Mac n Cheese for sides and was again in ecstasy.) What a treat. Traveling I95 & wanted some good local food - this place rocks. If you want some real southern cuisine with a gourmet twist - make a beeline for SoDoSoPa (Brownie points to you hipsters if you know the origin). Started with the Hog Cakes (Tip - while the app size is three for $9 each about the size of a tuna can you can order 1 or 2 for $3 each and sample without having an overwhelming appetizer). While our meal was great, the Hog Cakes were #1. As a Texan, I'm am not a fan of eastern NC style pulled pork as it normally is a mushy, vinegary, mustard mess. The hog Cakes were delightful yet keeping in style with the local Q. A NC pork bar-b- que croquette with panko as the binder & what made it special was the mustard glaze topped with pepper relish. For mains my wife had the shrimp and grits - smooth cheesey grits and the shrimp were very well seasoned and lightly pan fried & dusted with scallions. I had the country fried chicken - a tender breast, southern schnitzel style. Recommend the gravy (which is very good) served on the side. What set the dish apart was the sides: potato cakes - thier unique take on pan fried potato salad. Lastly their collard greens - for those that cook know making a good batch of collards is not easy & can be easily screwed up - they nailed it. Best collards we have had in a long time. The long standing waitress commented that they sell large quantities of their collard greens during the holidays - that speaks volumes in a small southern town. Price for shared appetizer, glass of wine, tea & two mains came to under $50! Where I live they could have charged twice as much & still have a reservation list two weeks out. read more

We were driving along 95 looking for a local place to have dinner.. There were six of us in our party. Not a huge menu, but plenty of choices. Nice mix of platters and sandwiches.. Everyone in the party enjoyed their meals very much and all said they would eat there again. The staff were very friendly, Cassidy was our server and she was very nice. Prices were reasonable and a nice assortment of sides to choose from to go with the meals. Not much in the way of atmosphere, but a very nice local place. read more

Ooof. The rave reviews really led us astray here! We stayed overnight in Smithfield on our drive back to DC and thought this place looked great. We got our order to-go and let's just say that 7 out of 9 of us were not thrilled at all with the food. The cheese substitution I asked for on my grilled portabella sandwich did not happen and they were skimpy with the small slices of mushrooms. Even the kids' meals went largely untouched (grilled cheese and mac and cheese!). My sister in law had a fish sandwich of some sort and loved it, so at least that was a hit. Perhaps this is the kind of restaurant you need to dine in to experience the best of it, and maybe we didn't get the best dishes to reflect what Sodosopa can really make, but our experience left us disappointed. read more

Delightful discovery! We were in town for an event, and this looked like a nice place to grab a casual dinner. Nice set of tables outside gave us the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful fall evening. The menu has some intriguing unusual items-- we tried the Southern Fried Rangoon (like crab Rangoon but filled with barbecue and collards!). They came with a cowboy mustard that complemented them very well. Pretty mild whole grain and just right for the dish. Nice, crisply fried and very tasty. For entree I had the smoked Turkey sandwich with Brie--something different and quite flavorful. My husband had a burger with queso, jalapeño, and bacon, which he raved about. Perfectly cooked and delicious! Overall a great dinner at a great price! We'll be back next time we're in the area. read more

Doesn't look like much on the outside, but the inside makes you feel instantly at home. The staff is friendly and very quick with the service., and the food is fantastic! I totally dig SoDoSoPa! It's got a great atmosphere, yummy food (lots of variety), and attentive staff! I don't eat much meat so I didn't expect to find much that would appeal to me, but there were definitely some good options. I almost got a smoked salmon ceaser salad. Glad I chose their portebello mushroom panini (they call it something else...but it is a crispy+chewy grilled sandwich with ooey-gooey cheese and veggies with a side of perfectly cooked french fries and a zesty pickle)! If you are a meat-eater, you will definitely be in heaven! From what I understand, they house-smoke their meat. They recently won an award for their "Hog Cakes" (like crab cakes but with smoked pulled pork). Their wings looked meaty and good and their shrimp and grits were really pretty! We split two apps; we enjoyed the Southern Fried Rangoons (collared greens & pulled pork), but didn't love the Hog Cakes (they came out cold/lukewarm on the inside twice). The food was worth the wait. I was super surprised at the quality and attention to detail of the joco dream burgers my wife and I ordered. The buns were fresh, delicious, and had their edges crisped up on the flat top perfectly. We both ordered medium cooked meat. The burger patty itself was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The bacon was just the right amount of crisp. I ate every bite. We both ate every bite. I felt the price point was very fair for the quality. Our waitress was kind. I grew up cooking bar-b-que so I'm very particular about where I eat it. Most places use a vinegar base sauce or try to add their own special spin, which is ok for anyone that that thinks that what bar-b-que is. Sorry, while it may be good it really isn't bar-b-que. Enter Sodosopa. They KNOW what bar-b-que is all about. Whether you get the pulled pork or try the brisket you won't be disappointed. Nice smoked taste without all the extra stuff. The sides are just as good and are original. The restaurant itself isn't that large and has a rustic look about it so makes a nice place to sit, eat a good meal and have a few to wind down with. If you find yourself in Smithfield check them out. The head across the street to the movie theater which is another treat. The two combined makes for a very nice evening. read more

This is your typical American bar and grill atmosphere. Overall, food quality is good and they have some unique menu options. Best and most original item on the menu is the Pork and Collard green Rangoons (appetizer). I ordered smoked brisket and ribs. The brisket would have tasted the same from a crock pot. Tender, but no bark whatsoever and NO smoke flavor. As for the beef ribs, they come out dry, not sauced. You have to add your own sauce. Wait staff needs some additional training. The waitress forgot our Rangoon order. Finally got them about halfway into our meal. Never apologized for the mistake. Never came back to ask how our meal was after plates were delivered. A little care for your customer, humility (and personality) would probably help your tip average a great deal. read more

Some kinks to work out, but this place has potential. They may be deciding which niche to fill, teetering between casual to upscale casual. Paper, clothlike napkins rolled around the flatware is the start. The atmosphere suggests upscale casual, but then Def Leppard on the muzak and tshirt/jean clad servers changes things. The food, so-so. Somewhere during training, the line cooks should have been taught you plate the sides after the entree so they all stay warm at serving. Entrees are $15-20 range, perhaps planning to cater to the lawyers and such in the neighborhood. Its located in the former Bistro on Third location. I had smoked brisket... City Barbeque, a chain, offers better flavor. My date had the meatloaf, we'll not order it again. Charred, but not firm like meatloaf should be. Nothing stood out at this visit, and $50 for lunch is a bit over the top. We will give it a couple months and try again, perhaps for dinner. read more
