A Classic Done Right at Zack's Char-grill. Sometimes the…read morebest meals are the simplest ones, and Zack's Chargrill in Smithfield proves this perfectly. My wife and I stopped in for what we thought would be a quick bite, but ended up with something much more satisfying. The menu isn't fancy - just good, honest burgers and fries - but the execution is spot-on. My wife ordered a double cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, while I went full Carolina style with chili, slaw, mustard, and onions. Both burgers were cooked exactly right, with that perfect char-grilled flavor you can only get from doing things the traditional way. What really struck me was how this meal brought back memories of old-school burger joints where quality ingredients and proper technique mattered more than gimmicks. The fries were crispy and hot, the perfect complement to these substantial burgers. If you find yourself in Smithfield and craving a burger that tastes like it should, you really can't go wrong with Zack's Char-grill. It's old-time goodness served fresh, and sometimes that's exactly what you need. Sorry about the photos. Phone screen went blank and couldn't see what I was aiming at. :-)

The only thing they don't have on the buffet is beef brisket, which is what we love, but all the food that we got the shredded pork, ribs, barbecue chicken, vegetables, bread...everything was really good. It's an odd place to have a barbecue restaurant, but it was definitely enjoyable. The service was excellent and they were very good about keeping the place clean. Being able to watch the airplanes land and takeoff was just an extra bonus.

But it was worth those few extra minutes for front row seats of the action on the tarmac below. We arrived during their lunchtime buffet hours, although you can also order from their regular menu. I'm not usually a buffet person, but since I wanted to try a little bit of everything it was definitely the way to go. For $18 I got some ribs, pulled pork, and BBQ chicken. Not to mention, a side of their delish cornbread, and a scoop of two of my Southern faves: mac & cheese and collard greens. Sadly, I was too full of the deliciousness to make a second trip, but if I had it would have been for a heaping pile of mashed potatoes and a generous scoop of their homemade peach cobbler. If you like airplanes and BBQ, add this to your list for your next visit to the area. They also have a full bar, though on this hot day we were happy with bottomless refills of their refreshing sweet tea.
