We were passing through Gila Bend and saw some reviews for Sofia's that were good so we decided to give it a try. The place doesn't look like much and it would be easy to give it a miss. Don't. The food is first class, service was quick and friendly and prices are reasonable. If you are looking for an upscale dining experience then this is not for you but if what you want is good food and good service at a fair price then Sofia's is the place for you. read more

I noticed a few negative reviews, but I though they were great. I am partial to Cal-Mex, but having enjoyed eating all over Mexico and the Southwest US and understand styles change (I tend to avoid Mex. Food that has a BBQ sauce influence) Was driving across country (starting in San Diego), and planned for lunch in Gila Bend with Sofia's as a possible stop over. This is what you would expect a perfectly cooked and seasoned Mexican meal to taste like! The restaurant was cozy and clean. The owner/waitress was very friendly. I never would have expected to find such great fare in such an out of the way town. Overall it was a solid home run. read more

The food here is great as well as the service. A little busy on weekends, especially for their breakfast, but the wait is worth it!

I've stopped here a few times on road trips to Yuma, and have always been satisfied. Table service is excellent (the waitress even apologized today for not coming to me for a 2 minutes because a take-out customer came in). Food is above average, and they're specialty is breakfast burritos. Price is very reasonable. I've tried one other Mexican place here, which was largely empty and seemed to focus more in a few well-known customers. But Sophia's has a steady stream of visitors, many speaking Spanish, and a vibrant kind atmosphere. read more

Good authentic food. The chips and salsa are made fresh so the chips were good and hot. The staff was very friendly and inviting.

Discrimination served. Sofia's likes locals only and makes sure you know you don't belong. We tried to stop on the way through town to eat lunch and were lucky to get any food at all. One of us didn't get any food, two of us got the wrong order served to us. It also took over an hour to get the little food we did get which only makes a long drive even longer. I'm not even sure how this place received such great reviews. And I don't expect top notch gourmet in such a small town but I can't believe we just spent the amount we did for the food we were served that was a small step up from slop. The Carne Asada was tough and extra thin, like beef jerky, a giant let down. The tamale was either stale and old or way over cooked. The enchiladas were soupy and lacked any flavor- as if the red sauce was watered down, they didn't even bother to dress it up with a fair amount of cheese. The ground beef tostada was a let down as well as it seemed the seasoning had a more hamburger helper flavor rather than a taco seasoning flavor. The rice was undercooked and bland but bonus points for at least getting the color right. And lastly, the refried beans. I've come to determine in my years of frequenting Mexican restaurants (large and small) and being spoiled by the amazing refried beans my mother-in-law can whip up with delight, that a good Mexican restaurant can easily be spotted by the flavor and consistency of their refried beans- it's a foundational food that deserves attention. This restaurant didn't bother to pay any attention to their beans. If I have to add salt to my side dish of beans then they are worthless. Needless to say the beans were bland and even a bit dry, maybe over cooked, probably over cooked as that seems to be a running theme for the food we were served. It's a mystery to me as to how this place got all the great reviews. Maybe we went in on an off night, it was a Sunday evening. I don't know. But I do think the 4 stars are misleading as they mislead us. We left without eating 3/4 of the food on each of our plates. Solid let down after a long day of traveling. read more

The service lacks they are slow and give a rats ass about the customer. Don't go there if you are in a hurry. Took 40 minutes and they still could not produce a to go order with just 4 items ordered. Inept totally. Made excuses they were busy, the server was busy eating and another table had 3 people. FAR from "busy". Crappy service save the grief go to McDonald's instead. Great Mexican food. By far the best place to stop in Gila bend, a must stop going to and coming home from San Diego.

One star for great service and friendliness. The food was pretty awful. Bland, flavorless, no amount of salt, pepper, lime, could fix it.. Water was from the tap and tasted like hell. It didn't help that they started mopping the floor right in front of us (PLEASE DON'T EVER DO THAT, IT'S COMMON SENSE NOT TO CONTAMINATE THE SPACE WHERE PPL ARE EATING, you could have waited after we left, the place is empty anyway) and the gross smell of dirty water and chemicals hit my nose and got me instantly nauseous. I left everything on my plate. I know it's a little spot in the middle of nowhere and I shouldn't have high expectations, but it's so sad when nobody gives a damn about the work that they do. No self-respect, no dignity, just whatever, shove that roadside food in your face and keep driving, right?.. What a complete waste of ingredients, everyone's time, and money. read more

Just ate here on our way to San Diego. Clean restaurant, good food, awesome chips and salsa. They were very nice and the food was out quickly. I really appreciated that they made my 22 month olds food perfect temperature. It's always annoying when you go to restaurants and the bring the food out and it's so hot I can't feed it to her. If you're going to eat in Gila Bend, this is the place. Fresh no nonsense traditional Mexican-American cafe food. Had a couple beef tostadas with rice and beans and washed it down with a good cup of coffee. Zero complaints. read more

This Mexican restaurant has excellent food. The salsa is so good you want to drink it, and the corn tortillas are the best. The carne asada is tasty and not tough. I would give it five stars, but the service, while cheerful, is painfully slow. We waited 30 minutes for our breakfast. read more

Ate lunch at Sofia's and it was delicious! Small restaurant that fills up quickly but the service was quick and efficient. We ordered the taco and enchilada combo,very tasty and freshly made. Along with the free appy of tortillas and salsa we were pleasantly full. We would definitely eat there again when in the area. read more
