EDIT.......I raising rating to 4 stars. The rental boot WAS open Monday 7/21 and the employee working was great (sorry I didn't get his name). Not going for 5 stars due to the response of the business reply. States that they do not open when yellow flags are flying at the beach. 7/19 we were at North Beach from 830 a.m to 3 p.m. Sunday we were there from 9 a.m. till 3:45 p.m and the flag nearest to where we were was green the entire time (near the line of the private beach). If NOAA and city communicated incorrectly, business should have a conversation with them. After we were able to rent paddle boards we did enjoy using them for the full time we rented them. read more

We went to the river location on a Sunday and didn't need to make a reservation day of. Tandem kayaks are reasonably priced and it's a down and back on the river. Kayaks are also pretty high quality but prepare to get wet bc the kayaks have holes in them that let in water. Great outdoor activity and upper body workout! read more

The Black River launch site was where we rented one canoe for 2 adults and one tandem kayak for an adult and a 12-year-old. The staff on site were friendly and greeted us with kindness and made sure we were all set to go before sending us on our way. The lifejackets, paddles, and boats provided were all in clean, nice condition. They assisted my husband and father-in-law in launching their canoe from the shore and my son and I launched from the accessible ramp. Just in case yuo're not familiar with this, you sit down into the kayak and they push the boat down into the water, this makes getting in and out of the water very easy and smooth. The tandem kayak was super steady for us and with just basic previous experience we were able to have a great time. The river route is wide enough you feel safe when larger boats pass and there is little to no waves/wake. We enjoyed seeing the many different boats, and further down lots of ducks, geese, a deer, and some kind of little weasel thing that was so cute and funny. This is something you can do and enjoy safely as a family. There is a restroom available in the public parking lot area, and you are near the drawbridge part of town/The Depot is right there if you need drinks etc. There was a vending machine in the parking lot but it was out of order on this particular day so bring your own water. Wear shoes that can get wet, and they recommended a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and water. One member of our group had an unexpected back problem towards the end of the paddle, and the staff were extremely respectful and helpful when he needed assistance getting out of the boat. It was forth of july 2017 so my expectations were low due to the amount of people expected at the beach. However we arrived and our kayaks were set up and ready. Clean life vests and paddles... the young man from Colorado (i didnt catch his name) was a sweet, polite and a helpful kid, (kid because he could have been my sons age) no insult to him.... he was so pleasant chatted about surfing the lake w me and was very patient w us being there were 8 ppl to get in order! We spent the day on the water... and my gaggle of 17year olds had gret time.... great price and overall experience was a 10+++ i would rent again in a heart beat... infact we will be back this weekend . .. We were from out of town and had roughly 9 people in the family and wanted to kayak. We made our reservations on-line along with payment a day before renting kayaks and picked our time to kayak along Black River. The kayaks were ready for us when we got there and we did not have any wait or issues. The guide gave us a couple of pointers and off we went. The kayaks were all very easy to use and had no issues with the equipment. I would definitely recommend renting from this shop. read more

I was very happy with Jen at the SoHa Surf Shop's Black River rental location. She lent me a bungy cord to hold my kayak carrier on our own boat while we were on the river, answered questions about how far the river had been cleared (the water is high so I was a bit nervous), and was generally friendly and helpful. I appreciated the customer service even while we weren't solely using Black River boats. Also, I live near South Beach, so I'm glad to see them renting at 3 locations this summer. We enjoyed 2 hour rental on the Black River. Sit on top kayaks, so it was a little bit chilly in October since we got a little bit wet! But very enjoyable. Staff was pleasant, very helpful, and on time for our reservation. Will definitely rent here again when warm weather returns. read more

The clothing in the shop is not your typical touristy $5 t-shirt. You'll find high quality, brand name attire, that will just so happen to leave you looking great at the beach, cookout or whatever it is you're doing. Oh, and need a new pair of Oakley's, a paddle board or kayak? It's the place to go in South Haven. They also have board & kayak rentals on the lake & on the river! Yay! Uninformed employees give way to lack of service. Wanted to rent a couple kayaks today at about 11 a.m., and was told by an employee yesterday to just go down to the park where they are set up and someone would be there. Wrong. Called the shop and a different employee told me that he would have to call the owner and get permission to have someone come down. Trailer at the park clearly marked with operational hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Waited an hour, no person, no return call. Won't ever be doing business with them. read more
