Went in to get a couple inches off and some layers done, walked out looking like an emo punk rock kid. I used to love my hair and now I can't even stand to look at it. Huge chunk a missing, completely uneven, total botch bowl cut. When Tuan was finished, I tried moving my hair to part it in the idle I told him before he started cutting my hair, and he goes "oh you like it messy?" Then I said I part my hair in the middle and all he had to say was "oh". So then he started cutting literal chunks out of my hair without an apron to cover me. I walked away feeling so disappointed and sad, my hair is very important to my self esteem and now without it I feel like a different person. I don't know why Sol Lamar doesn't have more five star reviews than it does. I came into Sol Lamar from a recommendation and am soooo incredibly happy that I did. I had a horrible hair cut a week ago. It was choppy, unnecessarily textured, and did not blend well, so I needed it fixed. I was scared that not much could be done to fix the mess. However, I was wrong. Tuan did such an amazing job. Every strand of hair matters to him. There was so much attention to detail, yet he was also so quick. I feel much more confident and happy with my hair. In addition to the amazing service, the salon is also so cute and comfortable. I love the decor and the style of salon. Yesterday I got what may be the best haircut of my life. We recently moved to the Santa Cruz area and I was overdue for a color and cut. Tuan was recommended so I made an appointment. He did a quick consultation with me, mixed up some magic, and an hour later I walked out with highlights in 3 shades and a fantastic haircut. I've had good haircuts and good color before but Tuan combines speed (it usually takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours for comparable services) with expertise and it's a winner. And there's no funny smell in my hair. His prices are very reasonable ($120 for the color, cut, and blow dry) and he and his assistant are very pleasant. It was a great experience. After moving here I've been trying to find someone who can cut a basic A-Line for 2 years! The last gal I tried totally butchered my hair leaving it uneven and looking like a mullet. Tuan saved the day! I called on a Friday and got an Appointment for Tuesday. When I walked in He immediately saw the trouble and explained how he was going to fix it. I was a little worried it might get further butchered because it was so messed up but was delighted when I saw how even and full it looked after. He spent a long time making sure everything blended in (as some strands in the front had been previously cut VERY short) and even after washing my hair at home it looks as if I just stepped out of the Salon. All his time and great work for only $50. By far the best $50 haircut I've had in a while and worth every penny. I highly recommend Tuan. read more

Tuan is AMAZING. My family and friends have been going to Tuan even before he opened his own place. He always delivers a great cut and color, is very detailed and makes sure that that you love your hair and that it is perfect before you leave his salon. He has grat technique, he is extremely fast at cutting hair and it may make some people nervous, but he always is spot on with the styling and the cut is perfect! Plus it only takes 1 hour for a color, cut and style, so you are not at the salon forever. Now that he has his own place, it is great! Its a super cute salon right in Capitola and across the street from Gale's Bakery, so you can grab a coffee before hand. He has private parking in the back for customers and there is decent street parking. Most importantly he a very talent hair stylist and delivers what I want. If you are open to changing your hair, he will offer you some suggestions based on your hair texture, how long you want to to style it in the morning, your face type etc. He is not afraid to go edgy or keep it simple, he always wants to make sure you are happy with your hair. On top of this, Tuan is so hardworking. Once I called because I was just invited for a job interview the next day and had to fly to San Diego, I called him the day before to see if he could get me in. Of course he was booked, but he came in at 7am before his first appointment to help me and do my hair. Overall Tuan is talented, passionate, personable, hardworking and dedicated to making each person he helps leave feeling confident, sexy and feeling create with their new. I like this new salon. I followed Tuan here because he's very good with style, cut, and color. And his helpers are terrific - I have a sensitive head but they're super gentle with me. In addition, I've had a Brazilian blowout that worked out really nice. The other thing is that there's a wonderful manicurist there too. She charges a bit more but the pedicure lasts longer than any I've had. So the location is great - this salon is so close to good eats and shopping and the ocean. I was looking for something "daring", "dramatic", and a little "punk rock" and walked out with something more like a basic bob with color too close to my own. Spent way too much money for that. Just got back from having my cut and color done by Kelli Butcher at the new salon she has relocated to. What a beautiful salon, bright and clean was my first impression. I followed Kelli to Sol Lamar from Prima. She always does consistent, wonderful cuts and her color is outstanding! My sister and I had been going to the same hairstylist for years at Prima. A few years ago after a botched hair color on my sister and because of the way the person had treated my sister regarding the issue, we both decided to sever ties and go to Kelli. He forewarned me that I most likely would have to see him a couple times to get my hair that light.
