I wish they would have been nicer... Just coming in to inquire about prices was a yucky experience. Stood at the counter several minutes before even being acknowledged and was then asked to wait longer for a different stylist who finally came out and then started talking to her client, ignoring me for several minutes. When she did finally speak to me she was really condescending when I inquired about pricing for a haircut. Perhaps they do a nice job stying hair, but I'll go where I feel a bit more welcomed. I've had long hair my whole life, and then the other day, I decided that I wanted to chop it all off. I don't know if you've ever seen the America's Next Top Model episodes where they get their makeovers and there is ALWAYS that one girl who cries because they cut her hair short and she hates it, and the audience always says, jeeeeesus, it's hair, it'll grow back....I am always that girl. June 2009: Karen has her own shop in Aptos now called "Lush Beauty Lounge." I have been having Karen cut my hair for nearly 15 years, currently commuting from San Francisco since she set up at Seaweed in Santa Cruz. I get many compliments on my hair and I can usually go 7-8 weeks between cuts. The salon is a cute house that has been made into various work stations. I was given Savannah LeDoux's contact information from Kala Ketchum when I was looking for hairstyling for my wedding for myself and bridesmaids. Her and I sent emails back and forth discussing what I was looking for along with my bridesmaids. She was laid back and came up with a timeline based on the hairstyles we chose. The hair trial I had was excellent. She was easy to talk to and her talent was apparent quickly. Based on the pictures I had selected she delivered an excellent hairstyle. I'm glad I did the hair trial so we could easily discuss and make changes based on the result. On the wedding day Savannah was beyond awesome! She was efficient and was able to style us five ladies with different hair textures and lengths with ease. The hairstyle she gave me turned out exactly as I had in mind. Her experience was very helpful as she explained the pros and cons of different options based on having an outdoor wedding with a breeze. When it came to putting on my veil she presented a couple options and she worked with me to get it exactly where I wanted it. She showed the matron of honor how to take it off for the reception which was easily done. She finished our hair ahead of schedule and helped the makeup artist with touch ups for the bridesmaids. All of us were thrilled with how our hair looked and it lasted all day long. Savannah truly goes above and beyond. Thrilled to have her style my hair on a day where the photos will last a lifetime. Awful customer service. I walked in because I work a few doors down and wanted to ask some questions and schedule an appointment. I was NOT greeted, even though there were 3 different hairstylist there working on clients. I understand that this is most likely a business who rents out to different stylist however I strongly feel the owner should go over the basic customer service ettique with the stylist. Super stoked on Seaweed Salon--specifically Lindsay Welsh, one of their stylists who works on Sundays. Seaweed is in Capitola, right off 41st Ave, by the mall, in a little complex near Whole Foods. The parking was easy, as they have a dedicated lot which is soooo nice! I hate having to find parking on the street or in a paid lot, especially when going to a hair appt. Lindsay is very friendly and upbeat. She has been in the industry for a while, and even though she looks way to young to be a pro, she is just that. I got my very first Brazilian Blowout (the good one) and wow, my hair looks great! I've had Keratin Complex treatments in the past, and while they do look great and keep hair smooth, they do take quite a while, the solution smells very 'chemical-y' and you must keep your hair in pristine condition for a few days following the treatment. No scrunchies, updos, hair ties, ponytails, or buns. And they recommend flatironing daily until you wash. None of this with the Brazilian!! It had no discernable smell or odor, to my nose, it only took about 2 hours tops, and I can wash tonight if I wanted to! I can put my hair back or use a hair tie also. So far, I'm sold. Lindsay is amazing, her technique is right-on and she's nice! I will definitely go back to see her. FYI, she works at a salon in Los Gatos called Main Street Annex during the week and then works at Seaweed on Sundays. I look forward to having more done with Lindsay, as she specializes in Balayage which I LOVE. Go to this salon and check it out. They have high quality products and the stylists are great. I have been going to Jonelle (the owner) for many years, and I am always so happy when I leave the salon. She is a master at coloring. I'm pretty particular about my color; I like my hair to be a very light platinum blonde with no warmth to it, and she always gets it right. The salon is great. It has a very chill, laid back vibe, where the stylists welcome you by name and make it feel like a home away from home. No stuffy, pretentious attitudes here. Let me first say that I'm not truly rating this salon 1-star. I just have to pick a rating, and I don't want to give it any rating since I haven't been there yet. But I would love to be able to rate this salon based on the stylists' actual skills, but I'm rating it based on the fact that nobody ever answers the phone there. I must've called every day, several times a day, at first, then twice a day around 10:30 and 2:00 because those seemed like times someone would be there. I just keep getting a voicemail recording. I was visiting my brother in Capitola and had an hour free - I was overdue for a haircut so called Seaweed. I got an answering machine but knew they were open so drove over and though Savannah was mostly booked she cut my hair on her lunch break. I asked for a short (finger-length) cut and Savannah didn't want to overdo it so gradually cut it shorter and shorter till it was the right length. She was very patient when I said I'd like it a bit shorter. My hair is tricky, it's gone from curly to wavy but she got it right - there's a nice style to it. So much better than the $55 cut I got at Joe Hamer in Petaluma (now closed - we won't miss you Joe). And Savannah charged just $25 for a basic men's haircut, great value. If I were local I'd be back every six to eight weeks. read more

I've been going here for years, to Jacquie specifically for almost 10! Absolutely love the warm inviting and friendly atmosphere of the salon and Jacquie has never given me a cut i didnt love. Jacquie rocks my daughter's world. She has also given me great cuts and she can blow dry with the best of them. Plus, she is super sweet. My daughter brought her pictures of Twiggy getting her haircut and wanted that and Jacquie gave her the cutest Twiggy cut. So happy to have found Jonelle!!! For years I commuted to San Francisco because everyone I had tried in San Jose made my hair a hot mess! Once I moved to Santa Cruz I knew I'd need to make an honest effort at finding someone new close by. I yelp'd a few salons and visited them all. I can only comment on highlights. I took my daughter in to Jacquie for highlights on a whim yesterday. She had a cancellation and worked her in - yay! I was in town to bring my daughter who attends UCSC back home to San Diego and wanted to surprise her with highlights I found Seaweed Hair Design on Yelp. Jacquie greeted us with the biggest smile and made us feel welcomed immediately. I really wished that she had more bright blonde streaks in her hair (which I had asked for before she started). Jacquie is really talented at what she does though, as she got rid of a really blonde area my daughter had and made it blended. I just wanted a little more ooph ya know? I may need to tone it down a little too as in the sun, it has a lot of brassiness (red) in it. Seaweed is awesome! It's not only clean but all the stylists are really nice. When I first walked in, I was greeted and offered a coffee or tea. Jacquie was my stylist and she did an AWESOME job on my hair. I went in with pictures of Victoria Beckham's pixie cut and she gave me exactly that to fit my hair's texture and face shape. Jacquie was extremely thorough and made sure she understood what I wanted before she started. She was also extremely friendly and excited to get my hair done. We talked the entire time she was cutting my hair which was great. She also showed me how to work with my new style and offered to retouch anything as the week passes in case I wanted it shorter in some areas. All in all it was a wonderful experience. I just moved to Santa Cruz a couple of months and was daunted by trying to find a new stylist but Seaweed is the place to be! read more
