Overall a great camp. The counselors are amazing. Nick C and Aiden where my kids favorite. The groups were small, 2 kids per consoler on average. Sasha, the owner was always responsive to any questions or feedback I had. My daughter got stung by a bee during camp and the Nick C, was so calm and handled the situation perfectly. I happened to be there so I was able to see and help. Nick carried her for me all the way to my car. However if I wasn't there I would be full confident she would have been taken care of. They also played some games with the kids and let them free play in the water and sand when when they wanted. But also encouraged them to surf. Both my kids were able to surf , by day two. I have a daughter and a son an both loved this camp. Ages 7 and 9. The only thing I would say is camp is actually over at 1:45 not 2, but that was so minor I didn't even mention it to Sasha. Its a long day at the beach and these instructors were amazing. We will for sure do this camp again next year. I highly recommend. Thank you SOL SURF!! read more

My 6 year old started surf camp again this year and was hesitant to get in the water, but Sasha and Tristan and all the other counselors were patient and understanding and helped him overcome his fear. Now all he talks about is going back to Sol Surf Camp every day! It's great, when he's not surfing he's collecting shells and ocean creatures with the other kids. Fantastic experience for intermediate level daughter. Phenomenal coaches... they are all friends (I think) and cheer each other on with hilarious banter which helps the kids break the ice and calm nerves. Sol Surf is by far both my daughter's favorite camp! I was so impressed at the team of instructor's professionalism, friendly, engaging, upbeat and enthusiastic personalities, knowledge of the ocean, ocean safety and of course, surfing! I really appreciate how they greet my girls with warm smiles, and a fist bump, making them feel special, valued and included. I as the parent appreciated how the surf instructors immediately offered to take their bag of supplies and carry it for them to the beach. That small act was a huge help and showed their hard working nature. It was so much fun to listen to the girls list off the names of all the instructors and what they valued about each one. I also appreciated their understanding when I was a couple of minutes late for pickup one day. Zero attitude, all good. I wish every camp had these special qualities. read more

I'm a 49yr old 3rd generation San Diegan with an 8yr old daughter! This is our 2nd week in Sol Surf and can hands down say that it has been an amazing experience! My daughter who wouldn't even let me teach her how to surf has made such a remarkable transformation because of this camp and especially its crew! After week 1 we went to Cardiff on our off week and I was finally able to get my daughter into some 50 yard rides in the white water! Being that surfing is such a massive part of what makes me who I am this was a monumental moment as a father! Now that we are in week 2 and she has one of her best friends along things have really begun to progress! All I can say is it doesn't matter if your kid can't surf at all or has advanced to where they can duck dive and get outside! Sasha's camp & his crew are so good at what they do your child will advance at any stage! This is a huge THANK YOU for getting this dream kicked started in just a few short days! If I could give 10 stars I would! I've included a couple pics of this morning of the girls having a blast! Also a few from week 1! Camps actually at 21st street and drop off and pick up is at 22nd if your unable to stay like I did! Also, their is no sign just a few umbrellas at 21st and stacks of foamies you can't miss. This camp hasn't been here for 20 yrs because they want to stick out like the one at Ponto! Its low key because Del Mar has always had a low key vibe and I'm sure the neighbors appreciate it as well! My daughter was always engaged either with instructors or with friends she made they entire time. She came home so surfed out each day it was great! So bummed by this surf camp. My son is 8 and surfs on a short board and we thought this camp would be individualized with kids his skill level in a small group of 1-3 getting personalized attention and encouragement to push themselves and in the very least a camp that would have engaging instructors. My sons instructor sucked. The first red flag was the call from husband who dropped off our son. My husband was concerned that there was zero interaction at check in. There were 4 guys playing a beach ball game and 3 kids just sitting on the sand. My husband asked if this was the surf camp, somebody said "yup" and that was about it. He asked me to go check on our son. I got there 45 min later and was surprised that there were 20 kids there. No one was in the water yet, I immediately saw the disorganization. I sat and watched. My sons group had 4 students, the other groups had 4 and one group had 5 students to 1 instructor. The website guarantees a ratio of no more than 3 students to 1 instructor; this simply isn't true. There were only enough surfboards for the instructors. Each instructor took out 1 student while the rest played in the water or on the sand or just stood there. I don't think my son was ever asked what his skill level was. After an hour and half, my son's instructor finally asked him to surf and then he paddled him, stayed on the back of board for 2 waves and that was it. What drove me crazy was the instructor more concerned with his hair than any of the kids, he just kept messing with his hair. After the group went in for water and snacks, my son and 4 others were still digging in the sand, they hadn't heard it was time for a break. I saw his instructor and one more instructor walking over to the group and I figured great they will tell the kids to go grab water with the rest. Nope. They walked over and to the kids and grabbed the boards and paddled out, no interaction, no heads up that it's snack time, nothing. My son came over to me and said this isn't really a surf camp is it? That's when we left. We stayed for 2 hours and then left. Now I'm going to contact Sasha to get our money back. This isn't right. read more

It's not even Spring Break yet and my kids (now 14 and 11) are asking when Sol Surf camp starts! Looking forward to another great summer. Our 11 yr old daughter wanted to learn to surf. The camp is leaning towards the "casual" side of "teaching"....as in you can build sand castles all am if you want. Most beginners need some encouragement to get in, stick with it and get over any fears. If you want a casual drop off/sitting/water play for 3 hrs give or take some "sign in time" "clean up" time this camp is for you. We did another 2 weeks with surf sessions and they much more serious/involved...(see review) read more

My son (10) and daughter (8) just completed Sol Surf Camp. What a hit! Both did not have a ton of experience in the ocean but came away loving surfing and more importantly being comfortable in the ocean. The drop-off/pickup was surprising easy and the warm water did not hurt... Highly recommend! read more

This camp is not only completely unorganized but also unsafe. You drop your child off in the alley and they wander on their own along the beach. There is no tent or banner or anyone there to greet them. Kids were in the water without anyone watching them at times. Several boys got out and wandered up the beach and were digging holes for an hour. No one came to check on them for at least an hour. After seeing the conditions, I did not have my son attend the camp. Despite this, Sasha cashed my check the next day and did not return my money. I will NEVER have my children attend this camp and I would not recommend it to any parents who are worried about safety in the ocean. I have heard that Fulcrum is amazing and there are much higher safety standards. read more

Wow, I do not know where to begin! This was simply the best experience my 4 kids have ever had. As a single mother of 4, this camp was one of the only consistent staples in our sweet little home. If it weren't for Sasha and the sweet endearing group of boys he's got working for him, I do not know where I would be in this big wide world. My kids all grew up in this camp and although the counselors and other campers changed and switched, the vibe stayed the same. This is a patient and nourishing place where your kids can get a few hours away from their parents in a safe and exuberant environment. Your kid has to want to surf here and if they are up for the task the wonderful staff will gladly push them into waves and stay on the back of the board or take them out far and push them into waves. Or if your kid is picky and wants to play in the sand and build castles then they made gladly do so, but under no circumstances would they ever be forced uncomfortably into waves they don't want to ride. If you are a helicopter parent nagging the counselors and head of camp (Sasha)... it will only slow the process down and create a pain for everyone so please everybody take a deep breath and drop your kid off here and trust that they will be safe and have fun with a few seconds away from mommy and daddy. My 9 year old is as reluctant a learner as a child can be. He spent a week with Sol Surf this summer and to say he enjoyed himself thoroughly would be an understatement. He LOVED it and cannot wait to go back again - that too this very summer ! I love how casual ( yet very safe) they are. My boys really like surfing now-they even asked for their own surf board! The camp is casual, no pressure and the instructors are really friendly and helpful and good with the kids. They make sure the kids get enough surfing in and take breaks when needed. But if a kid gets too distracted for too long, the instructors are good about getting them back in the water. read more
