Jeff and team here at the shop were absolutely AMAZING to deal with. It was my first time buying a surfboard from a shop and I had no idea how to determine what board was right. On top of that I wanted to buy a used board, that was on consignment. Jeff literally took the two boards I was looking at and put them on a stand, started measuring different features with calipers and tape measures and then explained to me the difference that each of the boards would provide. He made me feel welcome and supported in this decision. There was no pressure and he encouraged me to check out some other shops. I did check out some of the other shops in the area and their boards were GARBAGE compared to what Jeff and crew had in store. Their prices were so reasonable and the boards were in immaculate condition! He told me what to look out for in a used board and i just appreciated all of the help. Within a couple hours I had made my decision and bought a custom (used) Iron Cross board. I hadn't even heard of these guys, but let me tell you. These guys know how to take care of their customers. My husband and I were just in town for the holidays and found them on yelp. We rented some boards and wetsuits and went out to have fun! But my poor husband got stung by a stingray! Because we weren't familiar with the area and there were no lifeguards on duty I didn't know who else to call! I called and they gave me some advice until we found a lifeguard. When we got help, I called them again and told them I'd get them their boards back ASAP. Nice folks and a cool environment. Unfortunately, the boards, particularly the California Gold, are cheaply made and don't hold up. I purchased a California Gold board and within 4 sessions, the deck was covered with pressure dents due to the lightweight glass used. When I brought this to their attention they said there was nothing they could do to remedy the problem, "it's just normal wear and tear". This kind of glass stress after four sessions is not just normal wear and tear. It's a clear indication of inferior materials and build. read more

There's not enough love I can give to these guys. I've ridden their boards since high school, so a Red Baron, a Motherlode, and a Comp later when I decided to get back in the water after moving to San Francisco, the natural choice was to drive down and talk to Iron Cross. In the month-or-so since I bought my second Comp this Memorial Day, it's gotten me some killer lines in Pacifica, in over my head at Ocean Beach, and completely f*ing pitted in Santa Cruz. I can't effectively speak to how helpful, professional, and truly stoked Jay was to get me geared up and ready for summer. You want a no-bullshit surfboard?? Talk to Iron Cross and get you a board that make you wanna slap yo' mama. Honest. (Note: Don't actually slap yo' mama. That's just a saying, and slappin' yo' mama's a dick move, bro. Great staff, nice selection of boards and clothes. We make the LA- San Diego trip often and have driven by this little shop a million times so finally decided the drop in. We expected a tourist faux surf shop with "California" beach clothes but we're pleasantly surprised to find its an actual little local gem. The boards look perfect for the local waves with shapes and sizes for beginners through advanced surfers. We spoke with the owner/shaper who happened to be in the store, very friendly guy who obviously knows his local spots. Like most local shops and shapers- his boards are a function of the local waves (or similar waves in other spots) so if that's what you are looking for- strongly recommend these clearly quality boards. He might shape high performance competition-level boards but I didn't see any. These are generally soft rails, rocker aplenty for the local waves, slight concave near the tail, egg or rounded nose, etc. Good stuff. read more

Do NOT trust these guys. The owner is a scam artist. I took my friends here to rent boards for their first time surfing. They quoted us a price then overstated the hours of use. The owner then proceeded to tell me they needed to make up for being closed for 2 months!!! So just be prepared for extra charges to make up for their losses. Which, honestly I understand which is why I am trying to spend $. But not when the employees are shady and lied about our conversation when the owner pressed him. NO INTEGRITY!!! THIS WASN'T THE FIRST TIME. The same thing has happened to other friends. There are lots of great surf shops in Encinitas. It's worth the extra time to drive up there. I used to like this place but after my interaction with the owner, I will never go back. Leucadia or Encinitas surf shops are way better choices. read more

These guys are the best! I needed a fin key and I went into the shop to buy one, they were super friendly and gave me the key free of charge. The next day I had to get a small screw replaced. I have a SUP board, and I couldn't carry it in on my own, so the guy carried the board in for me. They fixed my problem and didn't charge me again. They take care of their customers. Iron Cross has a genuine feel to their business. I saw one of them out in the water the next day and he said "I remember you, I fixed your fun". That was awesome. Friendly and great service. I did a LOT of research on my first Longboard before I stumbled into the Iron Cross shop. We were immediately greeted by the father/son team there and it was very relaxed. I immediately went to their used longboard section and was trying to find a board that matched my measurements (9'+, 23" wide+ by 3' thick +) and there were a few that were in the sweet spot and VERY reasonably priced. I started to ask a few questions and was pleasantly surprised by the straight-forward advice and ZERO pressure approach. They actually told me I could rent one before I buy it and if I decided to purchase they would subtract the rental from the cost! I mentioned trying to navigate Craigslist in search of a board but with no prior experience...Well, you know how that sometimes turns out- They told me if I bought a CL board they would check it out for me and make sure it was water worthy, for FREE. My fiance (she used to surf quite a bit) was just shocked, as was I, at how friendly and laid back these guys were. They were almost trying not to sell me a board because they wanted me to be completely comfortable before $$ (hence the rental thing which is a great idea) A 3rd guy was hanging out in there and he is a Surfing Coach for a local High School, he was super nice and helpful also- they are all good friends and he had taken out both boards I was interested in so he was giving me the low-down. I ended up purchasing a 9'9" Island Influence (Local shaper). I was super impressed at how much time they took installing the leash and showing me how to install and/or remove the fins (all 3 fins were included in the price, another PLUS). I ride/race motorcycles and Iron Cross reminded me of my buddies motorcycle shop where you do not find any attitudes or egos, just employees and often times customers/friends hanging out that are passionate about helping new folks! A ton of knowledge and ZERO pressure. I have been in sales for most of my life and this is one of the best buying experiences I have ever had. After an hour I felt as if I should run next door and buy some beer to bring back and hang out with those guys. LOL I have been out a bunch on my board and I am pretty awful at surfing but the board is a great fit, water tight, catches everything and I am soo happy to have stumbled into Iron Cross Surfboards. And I'm so stoked I found this place cause I've had great experiences EVERY time. I came in for a simple board repair the other day and met Ben. He explained to me how he didn't feel right overcharging me the minimum price to fix a centemeter sized hole. Instead, he sold me the proper products and showed me exactly how to fix it right there in the shop. They also had a pretty cool selection of swimwear and boards. This is a mom-n-pop surf shop. Old school in many ways. Everyone there surfs and is knowledgeable about boards and gear. There are not many shops or board manufacturers that will let you demo boards or rent them. I have rented boards from them over the past few years and have always had a good experience. I've also brought in my son's board for a professional repair (excellent results). I ended up ordering a new custom noserider-Motherlode after many board trials and conversations. Justin, Jay and Jay's dad, Jeff all were helpful with my decision. I have friends that have ordered multiple boards from them and frequent the shop for wax, leashes and gear. Rented a wetsuit from here and it was easy and affordable. I really appreciated their customer service and friendly attitudes!

Stopped in for a deck repair here a few weeks back, $40 out the door which seemed a little steep but I think that's their minimum on certain dings. Repair work is perfect. The guys here are also super rad, didn't catch any names but all around super informative and happy to help out. My only recommendation would be to reach out to the customer once the repair is finished. I didn't hear anything for 2 weeks, so I gave them a call and it had been done for a few days. My long time friend wanted to get a new hi-performance longboard. He's new to the area so he wanted me to take him around. We went to three other shops of various sizes, we found incredible glass work, but the boards were looking kinda "loggy". That's when we went to Iron Cross. Not only did they stock a large amount of modern longboards, they also had a bunch of older style planks and shortboards too. Once we started talking to Jay, it became clear we were ordering a custom board instead. Jay was more than happy to talk with us for 45 minutes getting every detail of the order the way we wanted it. We discussed color work, glassing weight, fin placement, rail shape, everything. This may be the smallest surf shop in town, but anyone can go there and get the exact board for them, rather than one of a hundred generics off the rack. read more

I want to share my awesome board buying experience with Iron Cross Surfboards. I don't normally leave reviews, but this shop is ridiculous! Jeff the owner and his sons, notably Jay, are not only the real deal, but they know what makes a great board. I have shopped for many boards in the past 6 months, and the quality and craftsmanship that Jeff and his team put into the custom hand shaped boards is insane- works of art! I purchased a 9'6" Motherlode that has 3 stringers with a killer glass job that is so good, I was almost afraid to surf my new board, it's that unique and cool to look at. The other thing about this shop is that not only do they shape their own boards, but they try to custom graphic each one so they are one of a kind. The Iron Cross logo is even tough- I'd buy one even if I was attached to another brand. They sell shirts and hats that have killer graphics on them also- and they are all made in the USA! Almost everything in this shop is Made In the USA. How often do you see that anymore? Ok, so you get unmatched craftsmanship, super nice people with Jeff and Jay, and a work of art you will surf for many years. The selection of in stock boards is really good, and Jeff or Jay will spend the time with you to help you get the right board, at a price that can't be beat for a USA made hand crafted board. If they don't have what you want, Jeff will make it. The best thing about the shop (besides everything) is Jeff. He is a no nonsense kinda guy- he's a real artist, no BS. And his son Jay is the real deal, he's surfed all over, and speaks from doing it, not dreaming about it.
