Congratulations to Lucy for making her business work during COVID and shelter-in-place by offering private shopping, Poshmark and online options and reduced occupancy shopping experiences. Anyone can go online or go in-person to shop retail, but it's all about the thrill of the hunt with consignment shopping! When consigning, don't be hurt if your item is not chosen for the shop. The staff has the knowledge about what is selling and what they need. It's not a personal diss if they pass your item. They are trying to run a business! If your item doesn't get chosen, ask the reason. Sometimes there is a spot or sign of wear that you didn't notice that you can fix, and sometimes it's just not the right season. read more

This is the second Sola Lucy store in the East Bay. It just opened recently and I stepped in here for the first time today because I had to get rid of some of my designer clothing that I no longer had the urge to wear. They give the seller 40% of the sales and hold items in the store for two months. This place is extremely cute. It's small but packs up a lot for its size. The girls here have a great sense of style and taste. Their selections are very trustworthy and they thoroughly examine each piece of clothing before deciding to take it in. The customer service is excellent! They're very friendly and welcoming. The shop has a great selection of clothing --all the items are reasonably priced for what it was/the designer/style. I saw a Marc Jacobs jacket there for only $40 that was practically in new condition. The shoe selection was fab as well and so are the handbags. RAISM is alive and well in this Montclair shop. GO TO LABELS and be treated with respect. I consigned 2 beautiful expensive items with them which they "claim" they could not sale and gave away! They claim the most expensive of the 2 had a special security tag. The store I bought them from denied such a tag was used in their store.They implied it was stolen however I have a receipt from the store where I bought it. My items was "given away" they say . I Never received an email or phone call to pick it up. The owner Lucy accused me of lying about not receiving an email. Her attitude and tone was rude and disrespectful. She said" I know who you are"! Yes i know she was being racist and insulting because I am a black woman ive experience this before from retailer who are sobs. If I were blue eyed and blond from Piedmont or Montclair I would have gotten an apology! I would not have had my items Disappear without notifications or compensation. Do not shop here. Go to Labels. The owner has a distorted view of customer service. I am totally new to the concept of consignment since I am not from this area. Apparently, if you need to refund something they will do it if it is defective without issue. Even if it says all sales final. I bought a pair of sandals, but unfortunately they cut my up my toes. I had to wear bandages after an hour. I took them back and they refused to refund them saying they could absolutley do nothing about this and that it is not their fault they cut my feet. I was pretty disappointed, but if that is their policy I didn't see I could the sales lady could help so I decided to talk to the owner. Surely she would make an exception for such a dissappointed customer. Especially after seeing the scabs on my feet. But no, she held firm on her rules. I was shocked at how cruel her attitude was. This is a great place to shop or sell gently used clothes. They frequently have really cute stuff at SUPER discounted prices and whenever I sell stuff usually take at least half. Selling stuff: Unlike crossroads, you get money only when they sell your item. If they haven't sold it in a certain number of months they mark it down, and after another certain number of months they donate it. If you are looking to make money, this might not be the place, but if you are looking to dump some stuff and maybe make a few bucks, this is it! Their pricing is all over the place. A few weeks ago I bought a pair of boots dirt cheap and I find out they were worth over $475. I felt like I had won the lottery, they were barely worn and are right on trend. I also scored a pair of very inexpensive pants that were in fab condition and the price was right on par for those. My latest experience was quite different, I found a jacket that had been there for 2 months and I inquired why it wasn't marked down and the girl first tried to tell me it was designer. She was very adamant that they don't mark down designer items, when I quickly pointed out that there were many high end designers that were on mark down right on the sales rack, and that the item I had in my hand was in fact from a chain store not designer. She quickly changed her tune and said it was brand new. Then I pointed out there there were several NEW items in the store that were also on mark down. She quickly went into a speech about how its already as low as it will go and that they price to sell. I nicely said this had been here for two months and that I wasn't trying to argue with her, but that the pricing didn't make sense to me. She spoke to me like I didn't know a single thing about retail and how pricing works. I put all my stuff down and walked out of the store. Will I be back.....YES! I wouldn't say this place rocks, but overall it's a cute place for a quick retail therapy session. I barely have time to thrift anymore .... 25 yrs ago I did it all the time and dreamed of having my own shop at some point, alas I went into corporate america which affords me more money but less time .... however, this shop is easy to go through in an hour and I have never gone without finding something really cute and unique. It's a lot less daunting to go through here than a big place like Buffalo Exchange. I don't always understand why they have some of the items on the rack ... some seem really dated and cheesy and not in a good/funky way but there's always some gems of high quality for reasonable prices. I would say the majority of things in the store I wouldn't choose to put in the store, but I guess that's the fun of it (to find the hidden things that speak to your own personal style) You can get several (or a bunch) things for less than $100. It's a nice affordable retail therapy option. Some things are definitely priced too high, but they seem to mark things down that don't sell after a period of time. I also bring things here for consignment and although I'm sometimes shocked that they won't take some of my things (as I think they are often way nicer than a lot of things on the racks) they are always nice about it and I know style is a very subjective thing. The sign in the MONTCLAIR store back room is not honest nor accurate. Unfortunately it's indicative of the dishonesty of the times. It says the the sale room has 30% off of markdowns, and they would not honor the sign. The customer service is also sadly lacking; I had a problem with their not honoring the sign, and when I finally called the owner after I left even she wanted to fight instead thanking me for pointing the problem out and offering to remove or correct the sign. read more

She took about 20 pieces of jewelery & asked me if I'd be interested in consigning some pieces to the Berkeley store. {OF COURSE!} She made a phone call, a 10-min drive later, & I was able to consign another 10 pieces to the store in Berkeley. My contracts ended last week & only 3 pieces were left from both stores! I'll definitely be back when it's time for another shop clearance. read more

The selling experience is 5 stars. I've found some great things here too -- my Everlane loafers and vintage Coach saddle bag are staples in my wardrobe now. As a thrift store and vintage junkie, I cycle through clothes pretty fast and used to dread schlepping my cast-offs to Painted Bird or Buffalo, wait in line, deal with rude staff, and leave feeling like I wasted 3 hours of my life. Used them to consign and they totally trashed my fur jacket. I was not informed that it had been ripped at both shoulders. I only noticed it when I came home with the "unsellable" item. I called then to complain and they blamed it on me and said of course it was returned to me because "they couldn't sell it due to condition". You would not believe the process they put me through to even have the "opportunity" to consign my clothes. I felt like I was going through airport security and I'm sure if they had an xray machine they would have used it on my DESIGNER LABEL garments. It took me over 45 min. to have my 15 items reviewed by the consigner in front of the whole store. They rudely picked through my expensive items and tossed things back at me that "weren't compatible with their style sense". These items were brought to their store on the appropriate hangers and in protective clothing bags. When I attempted to get some sort of compensation for the damage...DON'T ASK..I was told I could get a $25 store credit for some of their merchandise. I said I don't want more of your stuff, I want my fur coat (which she had priced at $165) back to wearable status. I could tell it had either been sold and mishandled or hung improperly at the store. I had to return and have it out with the store owner who told me to get out of her store as I was bothering the customers when I wouldn't accept her first offer of a store credit. I thought I was a customer as I had already spent more in her store than I made on my consignments??? She FINALLY gave me $25 to go try to get the coat repaired on my own...all the while blaming me for a coat that was falling apart. I did an experiment where I attempted to pull open other parts of the pelts by pulling as hard as I could and there was no "weak seams" as she accused. Long story short...DO NOT CONSIGN QUALITY ITEMS WITH THIS PLACE...they will get ruined or lost and you will be treated like a loser hobo when you complain!!! read more

I use to love going to the Berkeley store and was sad to see it go. The staff was always a mixed bag as far as friendliness and customer service but I tried not to pay much mind to it. Now with just the Montclair shop open and pandemic, I've been trying to mostly shop online while shopping locally. I've visited their website many times and it's slowly improving in quality of presentation and organization of their items. A few times I called the shop to ask clarifying questions about items I saw online and the staff were unhelpful, rushed and rude. I recently received a promo code from them via email so decided to give them one more shot. This time I just went for it and purchased a top that was labeled s/m with a photo of it on a mannequin that showed how it fit. Now mind you I almost always wear a small but will venture into size medium on occasion. When I received my top I could tell right away that the sizing advertised was wrong because this thing was TINY. It looked like a x-small at best but more like something my 12 year old who wears a 00 would wear. Needless to say, the top fit like a crop top which it wasn't advertised as. I emailed the store two weeks ago to give them feedback and haven't heard anything back which I find to be terrible customer service. Sadly that was the last straw for me with this small business, and I'll be taking my business elsewhere. Two stars because I use to love shopping there. read more

I went there with a friend who is disabled. She asked for help to her car and the employee told her that they prefer to have the customer move their own merchandise. I could understand if the store was busy and there were not other employees available, but we were the only customers there and there was another salesperson at the counter. So sad when the owner of a small business does not value their customers and sees no need for good customer service. They have a good selection of clothes, shoes and jewelry and their staff is really nice. I consign a lot of my old clothes here and have had good luck with what they've sold. They do take 60% of the sale, but at least you get something more than if you hadn't consigned. Their other store in Berkeley (off of 4th street) has a younger/hipper/less conservative vibe, so sometimes they will take clothes that the Montclair store won't-- when I'm consigning, I usually go to both in one day. Don't bring in anything to consign that has any type of stain/rip on it, because they won't take it. Call ahead to see what they are currently accepting in terms of season.
