It is unclear why Rockridge needs yet another ridiculously overpriced vintage store (located literally across the street from another one), but if you are looking for one, this one is bougie and chic. Very old jeans with Mickey Mouse iron-ons, will run you anywhere between $100-$250. They also have a selection of Dresses, blouses, jackets, a few boots and shoes. Be very careful buying anything designer from this store. They claim this $1500 vintage LV backpack that I bought from them is not counterfeit even though the LV monogram started "peeling" off in the first month. They refuse to take it back or offer me a refund, so be sure to think twice before throwing down cash for so-called designer goods. read more

The owner who was at the new shop has a stick up her AZZ!! Walked in today, she greeted everybody but me. Not to sound sensitive but she watched me go through every rack without saying a word. This is retail lady!! I was ready to easily drop $$$$ on some designer items I really liked but you played your self! From a seller standpoint: This place is appointment only, so call in advanced to set that up. That being said, I really don't know what they accept. The store is called Mercy Vintage, so one would expect to bring in vintage clothing to sell. They are EXTREMELY selective and were not interested in any of the St, John, Escada, APC, or any other vintage items I brought in. When I inquired why they wouldn't take my brand name items, they let me know it was too contemporary, even though much of it IS VINTAGE. This was a waste of time for me and the associates. I was genuinely SO excited to check this place out but the second I took a step inside, I was greeted with a cold shoulder. It was so disappointing. There were literally 3 employees and none of them even took the time to acknowledge me. It was super uncomfortable. Aside from the horrendous customer service experience, some of the clothes was really dingy, and falling apart. But still had hefty price tags attached to them. I understand it's a vintage store but if I see really faded areas of the clothing, multiple cracked leather pieces, and missing sequin items, it's pretty ridiculous to even have it hanging on a rack. Just bought the most magical dress and designer purse from here. They have such great options for such a tiny space! The girl working was super helpful and when I tried on the dress she gave me great pointers and was so sweet on gassing me up while I was wearing the dress. Obviously I immediately bought it. Vintage and antique shopping on Piedmont is one of my great Bay Area pleasures. This little street has a lot to offer and actually a wealth of stores that specialize in bringing new joy through old wares and wearables. Mercy Vintage is a highly curated collection of women's fashion items. It's a very particular type of trend they offer here but if I had to best describe it I'd say that Mercy Vintage most likely resembles the closet of Carol Burnett's character, Miss Hannigan, in the movie Annie. Please note that I mean that in the very best way possible. The pieces you find here are all treasures and gems in their own right and you can tell that a lot of thought goes into choosing what items will hit the racks. Sections are coded by color with some of their more casual t-shirt type items in the center. The dressing room has the coolest vintage Gucci (i believe) print wallpaper and slightly behind the register is menagerie of classic used denim that I always want to try on but always get distracted and likely don't have the patience for anyway. This isn't a vintage store where you come to find 'steals', though I feel like things are pretty fairly priced for the brands they represent. This is store you go to hoping to find treasure, and while you might not always, you still stop in every time you're on Piedmont just to see if anything calls your name. read more

ONLINE BUYERS BEWARE!!! This was my first and last time purchasing from Mercy Vintage. I had been eyeing this vintage Thierry Mugler suit that a friend sent to me for months and finally purchased it only to find that it was HEAVILY FADED with an undisclosed sweat stain along the also faded collar. Since I'd never purchased from them, to be safe I asked if there was ANY fading or stains and if so to please provide pictures. They told me there was "no fading or stains" so I paid the $675 they were asking thinking I was getting a pristine Mugler piece. Now with vintage, and I say this with 30 years of collecting, we have to set the right expectations depending on the the era but when it comes to high end 1980s couture pieces, if I'm paying the higher prices then I expect what I'm paying for to be as listed. When I emailed them, Karen apologized and said they "didn't see the fade" which by the way is completely down BOTH sleeves and over into the front, the points of the collar, the back of the collar itself and left front tie that wraps around the front so the fading is completely visible from every angle. Not to even reiterate that the collar has a sweat stain which you can't miss. My reply was that I wanted either half the total refunded (which is what I would have been comfortable paying) or fully returning the piece all together for a refund. Karen ignored my email, refunded me $200 and that was it, no further replies. Here's the thing btw, as much as I "appreciate" the partial refund, they didn't do my any favors; they misrepresented what I was purchasing and had I known the extent of the damage, I wouldn't have bought it. It's the seller's responsibility to accurately describe what they're selling to the best of their abilities, or at least not lie about it. By far the worst experience I've ever had buying vintage. Not only do they blatantly lie in their listing, they lie in there message to me, then don't rectify the situation when they're caught. By not disclosing the condition of the suit, they essentially tricked me into buying it stole my money. DO NOT SHOP HERE! There are so many better vintage stores that won't rip you off. read more

Took a gander yesterday at what was on offer at Mercy Vintage, five years after my previous visit. I almost ended up walking out empty handed before I saw a sleeve sticking out from a rack of clothing that caught my eye. It belonged to an absolutely gorgeous vintage haori jacket that fit like a glove. The muted colors and subtle pattern lead me to believe it was probably a man's jacket in its former life. An older woman stopped me in the store when she saw it in my hands and said that it was cool. I was already getting compliments and I hadn't even paid for it yet. It's a truly special piece that will never leave my wardrobe. I thought $75 was a wee bit steep, but I was willing to pay that for such a well-made, beautiful vintage item. Unfortunately very little else caught my eye and what did wasn't my size, but the jacket alone was worth the trip. Mercy Vintage seems like the type of place that you should frequent regularly, as stock is always turning over and new finds come in. I was also relieved to see not one piece of clothing produced in the last decade like I did the first time I shopped here. I think I'll be checking this place out a lot more often than once every five years to see if I'll get lucky again. read more

It took some digging but I finally found a few really special 1950's dresses that were in great condition. I sifted through several cute dresses that had some pretty significant damage and that, unfortunately wasn't reflected in the pricing. However I found two gorgeous dresses at totally amazing price points, the woman working was really sweet and helpful and even gave me 10% off for buying both dresses. I would say that it's definitely worth a visit, but inspect each item carefully before purchasing. read more

They wrote me bad checks! Over the past few days I sold some clothes to them. They gave me a check every time I sold them clothes. I now have 3 bad checks. Two of them already bounced for insufficient funds. Last check was deposited yesterday through mobile and I am just waiting for it to bounce too! The amounts of the checks are nominal - in the $20 - 60 range. How can a store write bad checks for these nominal amounts? I think they may be writing checks from accounts that are not operational. I haven't been to this shop for quite some time due to multiple experiences with poor customer service over a span of years. Rude, cold, arrogant, indifferent. I am happy to say that the salesfolk have greatly improved, as well as the buying. Like, a complete 180. Warm and engaging, more forthcoming and involved in what the customer is trying on. They are now behaving like professionals who want you to come back. While there's still true vintage, there's a considerable amount of stand out wearable pieces that can be incorporated into a modern wardrobe. Before, I might find one piece, recently I found several. However, this place does not escape the one thing that always annoys/disgusts me about thrift stores: the smell of stale, unwashed clothing - it might just be one item and the rest are clean but I hate smelling that weird smell in a thrift store. Clearly, the folks who choose the items to sell have a particular style and demographic in mind - even a particular size - it's not 5'10", size 10 and middle-aged (that's me). All very tiny and super retro-trendy stuff. I was very impressed with the way the shoes/boots are displayed - they use empty plastic water bottles to keep the boots standing up smartly on the shelves (very clever!). I'm not often in the market for vintage, but this place is the antithesis of every musty, dusty and mothball-ravaged vintage store I've ever been to. My best friend needed to sell some vintage duds and suggested stopping at Mercy to see if they might be interested. While the super sweet sales associate looked at my friends finds, I roamed the small shop and fell in love. The clothes, accessories and other merchandise are displayed perfectly and the lack of cluttered racks bespeaks a slightly minimalist approach that allows custies to shop without feeling overwhelmed by the bulk. I've never, ever gotten this kind of vibe from another vintage shop. The sales associates were literally oozing flyness when we entered and their pleasant demeanor put us at total peace. While we didn't end up buying anything, the feast for the eyes that is Mercy Vintage made us feel like we had struck gold and gotten just what we wanted. read more

It's just so refreshing and exciting to be able to find an object that just moves you, from one existential plane of existence, to another. For those of you die hard, Vintage fashion collectors, and Thrift Store Whores (I'm a little of both); I think you will agree with me, that finding a dress, shoes, ... or coat, (yes, THE COAT; a pristine, wooly, cream colored, knee length little number, that would make, even Ms. Edith Head take off her glasses); well, you know how delicious and successful such a find makes one feel. I am not a Vintage person, per se, so I have nothing to compare it to. But sometimes I yearn for styles from the past, so I popped in as a result of a Yelp push when I was in the nabe. They did have a few rather interesting items, although not for me. The shop was smaller than I expected from the photos, but very neat and well organized. Staff were friendly but not intrusive. Still, I found the selection to be a lot more 'thrift store' than I had expected, with even just a hint of that type of odor. I was also surprised to find that some of the items that interested me most were not in terribly good shape. I was mostly hoping for boots and hats of various kinds. There were not a lot of those, or shoes, for that matter. I did look at the clothing and jewelry as well. So, if what they have floats your boat, it's a nice little shop. I've honestly found better stuff at Thriftown in El Sobrante, and way, way cheaper. read more

I'm not the most hard-core vintage shopper, or shopper...in general. That's why I love Mercy- everything has been done for you- walk in, grab some of the amazing clothes off the rack, try them on if you need to, and you are in business. 10x hipper and more cool then when you walked in. I would say the prices are commensurate with the condition and style of the clothing. They have a great location right next to the Piedmont Theater, and I'm really excited for the lovely people who run this place- I do know one of the owners, so I am a little biased- I'll come out and say it. I went to their popping opening party and bought this great red silk tasseled shirt (made in Korea). Think 1982 Tennessee! Can you see it, with some short shorts and cowboy boots? Yee-Haw. The store itself has the coolest layout and feel. I love the little octagonal tiles covering the floor, and funky chairs upon which to sit down if perhaps your companion needs a little rest while you try on the goods. One finial thing that's really fabu about Mercy is both of the owners are on the TALL side- like, really tall- so they stock a lot of sizes to accommodate the tall ladies, and this includes shoes! I la-la-love finding concentrations of larger sized-vintage shoes, since I rock size 9 1/2. Support you local business women! read more

I sold two gorgeous vintage dresses here for a pittance. I was too shocked to object (my mistake of course) when they rang up the total. My mother originally purchased these dresses and kept them in impeccable condition for 20 years. I made such a mistake taking them to Mercy. They asked me if I wanted trade or cash. I chose cash because I feel their inventory is old people vintage, not cool vintage. Sigh. Lesson learned. read more

But I was very disappointed to see the price tags. At most good vintage stores, I pick something up to check the tag and it seems like it's always a few dollars under what I expected. I work on Piedmont Ave and was curious about this new shop every time I drove by. The window displays were always interesting and stylish and the clothing I saw from the road always looked cute. So I stopped in! Forgive me for forgetting the womans name who owns the store. I am commiting it to memory next time I go, but she rocked. First of all she is nice and down to earth. Not at all pretentious or snobby. She's got a great selection of vintage clothes, all in great condition, and I think priced well. While a lot of vintage stores struggle to maintain a streamlined and clean look, Mercy was just born that way. Organized, and not over stuffed. I found a nice suede skirt, a black satin cape, and a rad black basket weave purse with brass hardware. I was chatting with the lady for a while about her store and mentioned that I love her shoe selection, I just wish they made more shoes in my size. She asked me what size I was and when I told her 4 she said she will keep her eye out and stock up on a few pairs for me! I've bought wonderful pieces here, but multiple times have gotten home with them and days later notice holes or stains or imperfections. You really must look the piece over when you're there and be OK with stains, holes, pulled threads, etc. If you can accept it, you can find some amazing articles of clothing. In terms of selling, I once tried selling them a dress, they didn't take it, then I had the surreal experience of finding it on their rack for $250 a few weeks later. I guess my roommate brought it in. It was purchased for maybe $20. I guess it depends on the buyer but the prices can be pretty disturbing and they are pretty selective. It's got a broad price range for designer and non-designer things, there are holes and stains, but I have certainly found some great things. read more

As an out-of-towner, I walked a long stretch of Piedmont Avenue and have to say that hands down, this was my favourite shop. It's small so the stock is limited, but if I lived here this is the type of place I'd dip into every week or so to check out new pieces. Great quality, very on trend- the owner has great taste.
