    Jigna P.

I took my first solid core class back in March. Since then I have been going about 2-3 times a week. The workout itself is reformer work on a large megaformer (basically a classic reformer on steroids). The instructor will basically go through a set of moves you would do on the reformer in sequence and the class works basically by body sections, abs, arms, lower body/butt etc. It sounds simple enough and at the core of it all it is rather simple, you simply complete the moves you are told to do. The fun comes in when you realize how challenging they are. These classes are not easy by any stretch of the imagination. The megaformer forces you to really sculpt out your core and the Full Body classes work every inch of you. The megaformer does take a few classes to get used to, so I recommend taking the beginner classes first if you have never been on a reformer/megaformer before. In my personal experience, I have been trying get back into the shape I was in a few years ago and really tone up. This place is perfect for it. I have mixed in 2-3 classes a week with my routine of spin/other cardio and have seen results! I am definitely seeing my abs now and the classes have helped me lose the stubborn 'pockets' of fat along my hips and thighs as well. I am a stronger and leaner version of the person that started back in March! The only downside is the price, I was lucky enough to sign up for a 3 month commitment as a new client so my classes weren't terribly expensive but most will run you 25-30$ a class. I have tried other megaformer studios in the city and plan to try SLT next, and while I do like the vibe of solidcore more, deciding which studio to chose may come down to price, which isn't unreasonable. Solidcore, of the studios I have tried, is the more expensive option so I do recommend anyone who likes this type of workout, try the other studios as well. The actual logistics of the studio are: Reformer room: 12 large megaformers, enough space between to get from the front to the back quickly. Mirrored walls in front and behind you. This may seem intimating but it is great to watch your form. The studio : The studio space outside of the reformer room is large, some seating available on 3 large benches, each with cubbies beneath for you to store your things. There is a coat rack for you as well. Two large bathrooms (where you can change if need be), with some provided hair care products and other last minutes essentials you may forget. There are not showers. All in all - I really enjoy the studio and the staff is great as well! I recommend you give it a try, you will definitely be stronger for it.

It reminds…read moreme of Vira Yoga in SoHo, the first yoga studio I ever practiced in, which has long since closed but still sits in my memory as a certain kind of downtown wellness institution: essentialist rooms, serious teachers, and no need to announce its own taste. Thrive has a similar quality. It feels built from real experience rather than from a brand deck. Hally has clearly created this place with care and precision, and it is a gift to see a local Rittenhouse operator build something this thoughtful in Philadelphia. The studio is consistently clean, the desk team has always been professional, and the whole operation feels calm and well-held. The clientele adds a lot to the atmosphere, too. They seem like people who have been all over the world and seen the full continuum of people, places, and things, but would never tell you that; they just absorb it. I especially want to give real credit to Lisa Grunberger, one of the wisest yoga teachers I have ever encountered. My yoga journey started with Elena Brower, and Lisa reminds me of that same era of teachers: deeply wise about physiology, a lifelong student of the practice, and unusually perceptive about life. She embodies yoga in a way that feels earned, not performed. There is something very moving about watching someone age gracefully while still working hard to stay current, flexible, and fully alive in the work. Lisa's music deserves its own mention because it is extraordinary. Her class soundtracks map to an era just before music became fully digitized, when taste still had to be gathered, carried, and lived with over time. The tracks are rich, discerning, and never forced. I have had so many moments in her Friday midday class where I hear something and think, "Oh my gosh, this song is amazing" because the music is not just background; it quietly deepens the whole experience. Life and budget have shifted, so I have not been back to Thrive recently, but I know I will return when I can. Thrive has that low key, sophisticated, quietly chic feeling that never seems to be trying to sell itself. It feels more like an academy and a commune than a business, which is rare for a city studio. I admire what Hally has built here, and hope to return soon! Note: There appear to be two Yelp pages for the same business, listed as Thrive Pilates & Yoga and Thrive Pilates. I'm posting this review on both to avoid confusion.

When we arrived at 11:50, the kittens were still not there. They were brought in by Morris Animal Refuge. All the proceeds from the class went directly towards the needs of the refuge. Once we were settled in and the kittens got acclimated, our instructor, Heather, gave some background about Morris Animal Refuge. She stated it was a beginner level class and there wouldn't be a need for props. The class was actually pretty fast paced for beginner level! Heather said she would conclude five minutes early to give us a chance to take photos and spend time with the cats. The cats were amazing, but I wish there were more of them. They mostly hung around at the front of the studio but the volunteers from Morris would grab them and bring them around so everyone had a chance to see them. There were a lot of people in attendance for just a few cats. Amrita provided a clean and pleasant environment and a comfortable temperature for the class.

But Danielle (the receptionist) was good because she answered my questions and checked on my while I waited. She also was very positive and friendly. So I decided to stay. . Brie was great. I've taken yoga classes here and they were great: they were very relaxing, I learned a lot, and my body felt a lot better after them. Classes are not overcrowded, which makes for more relaxing yoga sessions. However, a word of caution to those with cat allergies - they do have two cats that sometimes roam freely on the studio floor. While they are adorable, they sometimes show up unexpectedly next to you, and there are few things within a yoga studio that are more disruptive than being suddenly overcome with fear of breaking into an asthma attack or into hives. I had bought 10-class passes for myself and my husband before I knew there were cats on premises. We only found out about the cats several classes in, and tried to go anyway, informing the instructors about our allergies whenever we arrived. However, anyone who has cats knows that cats can climb over low barriers and although the instructors would put the cats away, they would still manage to find their way out to the studio floor. I also get nervous about accidentally picking up cat dander from doing yoga poses on the floor, since obviously it wouldn't be realistic for them to clean the floor and all equipment before every class. Since focusing on breathing is an important part of yoga practice, my fear of breathing in that space (fear that I might inhale cat dander and suffer severe allergy symptoms) really interfered with doing yoga. This has caused us to feel reluctant to come back, and now I believe our 10-class passes have expired, which means we've lost money on the unused classes (I believe I had a few remaining classes, while my husband had roughly half). Overall, this is a very good yoga studio (that also offers belly dance and some other classes), but it's definitely a stressful experience for people with allergies to cat dander.

Multiple instructors were condescending and openly shaming when I was clearly trying my best. As a beginner, having my form corrected repeatedly out loud, over and over, in front of the entire class was embarrassing and unnecessary--especially when I wasn't at risk of injury. It also slowed the class down for everyone else. There are gentle, respectful ways to help beginners. This studio does not use them. One instructor put her hands on me after I explicitly asked her not to. When I reiterated that boundary, she took offense rather than respecting it. That alone should be unacceptable in any fitness setting. Because of these experiences, I paused my membership for two months. Due to a recent unemployment, I then submitted a written cancellation request 33 days before my next billing cycle. The cancellation form provides no confirmation or record, so I took screenshots. I followed up weekly. After weeks of silence, I was told to "allow three weeks for processing." Despite this, I was still charged. When I followed up again, the manager (Lauren) responded with the claim that members cannot cancel while on pause--a policy that does not appear in the contract or in any published studio policies. When I challenged this and cited the terms, I received no response. I ultimately had to file a dispute with my bank to reverse the charges. Between the shaming instructional style, disregard for personal boundaries, poor front-desk support, and what I consider deceptive and unethical billing practices, this studio is not trustworthy. If you are a beginner, or if you expect transparent, ethical business practices--do not join this studio.
