There are quite a few negative reviews that may lead you to have misconceptions of what solstice offers. I came into the experience with fear, anger and pain. I hated that my parents were sending me to somewhere I knew only horrible things about. I had only hatred to the place when I went in. However as I began to see what was going around me and the ways that the program let me be whoever i wanted to be i began to see their vision. Now there are hardships that come with treatment, theres no questions to that, and solstice had its moments for sure. But what you have to realize it is a place of what you make it be. My experience in the beginning was horrible because I fought the program i did not want to get better, but even then they held my hand through all of it. as i realized what there intentions were i found it in myself to let them help me heal. I trusted the staff more and more. The therapists are incredible and they are there for whatever you have to bring them. Some might say your going to be there for a year or more but the key is if you let them help you instead if fight agaist them you could be getting our in under 6 months like me. the program is incredible and yes it still has work and growth that would make it even better but it is something I will forever be grateful for. If you are a parent looking to send you child here, i recommend with every good part in me. your daughter deserves a chance to find herself and thrive in a world that maybe wasn't built for her and solstice provides a way that you can make your own and take it with you for the rest of your life. this is my experience and i hope that you could provide you child with the same, however each kids perspective is different. The " therapy" would be better referred to as blatant enabling. This place destroyed my relationship with my daughter and it was completely though allowing her to continue to wallow in dishonesty and manipulation. When I asked her "therapist" (Jeff Lavalle) why he allowed her to continue to lie, he actually said he had to support her and acknowledged he knew she was lying. When I attempted to contact them after my daughter graduated, I got a call from someone feigning to care who told me he was going to transfer me to the director. Predictably, I was transferred to the directors voicemail. I left a message and never received the courtesy of a call back. For $14,000 a month one would expect something slightly more professional. Solstice is a SCAM and only cares about $$ not kids. Stay away parents. read more

Honestly, I tried to look at this with a glass half full view. But after 11 months, it was horrible. A staff killed himself because he dated one of the girls that was actively in the program. They chose bad ice cream for ice cream nights no good movies for movie night one time the staff tried to get Me to hit his cart (a card means weed for the millennials reading this) the staff members would let us chief their vapes all the staff members had weird relationships with us kids. Jokes aside it was very emotionally abusive. And if you send your kid here you don't love your kid. My therapist made jokes of sexual assault all the time. But they would take us to Menchie's, which was super nice. read more

Do not be mistaken. Solstice was caught buying 5 star reviews leading them to be deleted by Google. Not a single resident leaving here can genuinely say they weren't incredibly emotionally abusive. They gaslight you when questioning practices such as putting you on an incredibly restrictive "safety precaution" for eating breakfast before cleaning your room. They withhold food as punishment, leading residents to feel as though they must hide food in their room, and when caught with a granola bar in your bed you will be put on safety, depending on your therapist. This is the least of the abuse. If you leave an item anywhere, regardless of whether it's your homework or journal, they lock it up in a closet until the next day. Whilst there, 2 staff were fired, 1 proven via police reports, engaging in pedophilia. They put the entire rtc on a 24 hour blackout period so that nobody could contact their parents and all family sessions were cancelled, and they sent out an email essentially claiming that all of their kids were going to lie about what transpired. Mentioning these incidents were a "safety violation", and they were never processed. I could go on and on. They've gotten away with this for too long. This facility profits off of and manipulates desperate parents wanting to help their struggling child. This is not hearsay, this is my real experience. Cheese cubes and ham for dinner. Strip searching girls with no reason, also allowing male staff to strip search the teenage girls. In 2020 the staff Rachel refused my friend from using the bathroom until she peed her pants and then my friend had to go to equine therapy in her pee-soaked pants. My friend begged to use the bathroom for 5 minutes, to which the staff kept replying "no." (there were 5 empty bathrooms on the floor) after leaving the program, I found out that that staff did that with another girl too (refusing access to bathroom until she peed her pants) Don't allow free speech and expression without punishment. For a place that's supposed to help girls, most of the residents leave to develop harder substance abuse issues and have more unresolved trauma. Power hungry staff getting paid poorly, not a good mix. In 2019 during my first week, the staff had me and a group of girls put on a protocol where we couldn't talk to each other, or else we would lose all of our privileges (talking,books,jewelry, free time). They then had us all line up and selected 1 girl to organize the line of girls from "funniest to least funniest." then "fun to most boring" and "nicest to meanest". How is that supposed to help a young girl with sex trauma? How does that help a young girl with substance abuse? The entire place needs to be shut down and investigated for neglect, abuse, and crimes against young girls. Shame on everyone working for and defending this place. read more

Almost check myself out and became homelessover saying there when i turned 18. Only reason I stayed because I want to graduate high school and not have to repeat my senior year. SCHOOL/ educational classes. Psh. A JOKE. So easy. Was never actually taught anything I hadn't already learned except for when my chemistry teacher showed how to change a car tire. I was severely disabled and had physical pain and disability they didn't understand yet and no one believed me. They forced me to go on physical hikes and do highly physical activities that I cannot do and I kept collapsing onto the ground and hurt myself so much more. I cried and cried for them to help me. No. One. Would. I would try to take a stand when leaving in the car. I would would refuse to get in the car. I would beg them not to make me go. I told them I was in so much pain. They didn't. Please hear me out, because I have proof, and this is actually a bit crazy. I attended Solstice Residential Treatment Center in Layton, Utah, for about 9 months in 2024. There were already a large host of issues and mistreatment, but that is not what I am writing about. Solstice has a safety policy in which a student, assigned safety, must be an arm's length from an assigned staff at all times. Because of this, a 24-year-old staff member by the name of Keltin Swain was able to find himself completely alone with my 17-year-old best friend at the time almost daily, in an all girls facility for ages 14-18, for upwards of 6 months, as she would stay on safety on purpose. This a high level of care for very vulnerable girls, and yet Solstice consistently turned a blind eye to their time together, a grown man and a teenaged girl. Not only were they consistently left completely alone in dorms, they constantly had private conversations even around others, and Keltin would almost solely interact with her, and sometimes with me biproxy. Over time my friend withdrew and became more and more isolated to only talking to him, but because Keltin's girlfriend worked there and often brought their 5 year old daughter and frankly was nice to me, I just couldn't fathom he would be doing anything weird. There were no cameras anywhere in the dorms, despite it being a higher level of care. All staff and "higher-ups" were well aware of their constant spending time together alone, and in fact when I brought it to their attention that this seemed off, as my friend had become incredibly withdrawn at this point, one was responsive and another called me disrespectful as it was a serious allegation. As it turned out, they were "dating". He was 6'7, maybe 6'8, she was 4'11. He wrote her over 200 letters and poems, some with his blood on them, and wanted a vial of her blood on a necklace. These were kept in a Hello Kitty box on the campus. He brought her vapes and chocolate when she was on her period, rubbed her back in our doorway, kissed her, more, and ultimately created a plan in which she would run away from the facility, meet him outside in his car, and they would permanently disappear. He waited outside in his car for 7 or 8 hours until leaving as she didn't follow through. This was only able to happen due to Solstice's neglect. When this finally came out, as my friend told her therapist, Solstice cancelled all family therapy sessions and contact with the outside world for 24 hours. During this time, Jane Peterson, executive director of Solstice, sent out an email to all parents, which I can provide, which essentially said that all residents were going to lie to their parents and spread rumors. I genuinely swear on my life that this is true, and I can get a ton more testimonies. My friend's parents kept her there as they could not afford to send her elsewhere and felt she couldn't come home (I wouldn't have kept her there.) For actual months afterwards, Solstice repeatedly with-held her from the police, stating that she was too "disregulated" when in reality she was dressed in formal attire with a statement ready to go. Keltin has since committed suicide, but Solstice has found no justice. All of this can be proved. So unless you want your child groomed and neglected, don't send them here. read more

If I could give less than a star I would. Kate Deily fled over from Spring Ridge Academy known for being shut down due to abuse, negligence, and manipulation. These practices do not help you assimilate back into the world with your children healed. They take the trauma and use it as blackmail over your child/student. You will regret it. It has been a decade since I attended back in 2013-2017. No case manager helped us find a school, or a schedule, or even gave us a real check up. That's what you get when you put your trust in them. They take your money and let you rot. Office has zero reliability. I was at SRA from 12-17 DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND HEAL AS A FAMILY. DONT TRUST KATE OR THE TEAM TO DO IT FOR YOU. I know as a parent it is scary, but there are other options. I beg you to protect your children and avoid these teams that promise only they can cure your child. It's not true. As a parent you are capable and worthy of helping your child yourself. read more

I attended Solstice West from 2017-2018 after my wilderness program. My education consultant (HILARY BALDI) recommended this RTC to my parents due to fears of me immediately returning home. Although I am grateful for some of the skills I learned, I would say the overall experience was unpleasant. The residential staff are not required to have any background in psychology, let alone a degree. Residential staff here had an extremely high turn over rate. Many of them were regular individuals who seemed to enjoy positions of power. There were many instances I felt the residential staff abused their power. The residential staff would have inappropriate conversations with us about their personal beliefs, which included homophobia. A staff member named Becca shared her homophobic beliefs with us and was not reprimanded because it was her, "religious beliefs." While attending solstice we never got to the root cause of my issues. My treatment plan was purely focused on my issues although my mother was the root cause of them. I was blamed for not having a good relationship with my mother and acting out. Two years later my mother was diagnosed with BPD. None of the trauma she caused was ever addressed, only the things I did out of anger. My parents wanted to divorce midway through my stay and my therapist convinced them to stay together for, "my sake." My therapist claimed it would break me although I had begged them to divorce previously. We rebuilt our family dynamic just for them to divorce one year after my graduation. My therapist held me there much longer than needed and instilled fear into my parents. I was one of the FEW kids in our substance abuse program who didn't break sobriety on a home visit. Unfortunately I was one of the last to graduate. I was looking forward to graduating in the beginning of June however, I didn't graduate until the beginning of August due to fears of me using over the summer. This upset me deeply because I had done nothing to prove I didn't want to be sober, yet I was repeatedly accused of such. I was a witness to two inappropriate relationships between residential staff members and residents. One of the staff members was fired only after I brought up my suspicions of an inappropriate relationship to another residential staff member. The fired staff member still tries to request my friends and I on Facebook to this day. The week of my 17th birthday was also parent seminar. Parent seminar is when parents come to campus and we do therapy and activities all together. At this point I was there for 9 months and on my second to last level. I was supposed to stay with my parents for the seminar. During our weekly team meeting (forgot what we called it specifically) this 4'6 chupacabra (aka Kim) convinced my therapist I needed to stay on campus. The reasoning you may ask? Because I needed to, "teach the fellow residents empathy," and, "be a leader for the ones staying on campus." My parents were extremely unhappy with the decision and felt blindsided. I assume my parents convinced them to let me free for my 17th birthday and after two days of staying on campus I was allowed to stay with them. It felt oddly manipulative especially considering how far along I was in the program. Each team (Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring) had assigned home rooms. When we were on time we received extra points for the day. My home room teacher was genuinely the only light of my day (shout out to you Clint!). One day while getting in our lines to walk to school the chupacabra mentioned previously noticed a glimmer on the carpet. A resident who left that morning accidentally dropped makeup on the ground which the duende didn't think was logical! It had to have been one of us currently there. She made us all sit on the ground in silence until whoever dropped the makeup cleaned it up. Many of us begged to just let us clean it so we could go to class, but she refused to let us. After 30 minutes of us sitting there I guess the duende (aka Kim) came to her senses and let one of us take the two seconds to vacuum the powder off the carpet. We wasted 30 minutes of class time over a power trip? So bizarre. If we were struggling with our grades our punishment was a one hour military style workout on Fridays. This workout was followed by a 5 hour study hall. Other residents went on trips off campus this day. Why was a workout used as a punishment at a residential treatment center? Especially with residents with eating disorders? Who knows! My parents fully regret sending me here and they wish they tried other options. My junior and senior year of socialization was ripped from me. I grew up too quickly and couldn't connect with anyone once I came home. (More below) read more

*Update: they threatened to have "legal ramifications" for sharing my experience *I want to make it clear these are all from my personal experience, opinions, hearsay, etc. In no way at I trying to harm solstice west or its image. Original review; This place gave me and quite a few other kids I knew there PTSD. You're initially there non consensually against your will, I was, and most of the time when kiddos are "transported" there, it's often done without their knowledge or consent, according to my own story of trafficking and also others that have said that they were. In the industry we call it 'gooning'. Basically it's being taken away to a TTIP (troubled teen industry program) without knowledge or consent. Often, gooners find unethical methods to make sure the kids get in the van no matter what. I don't even want to list them here. For me they forcefully grabbed me tightly on both sides and got dragged out of my room and "placed" in the car, which only opens from the outside to make sure kids don't escape.... And these gooning things usually happen in the dead hours of the night because the child is less able to defend themself. Happened to me at like 1-2am. Anyways, on to the program. So you're there, not only did I experience legally kidnapping and now am incarcerated and held at some place states away from home against my will, but now I'm not allowed to do basically anything. It actually says this in one of the documents they made me sign, the "safety" contract I believe? In one sentence it reads (paraphrasing): "I understand that Im not allowed to go anywhere or do anything without permission". Very fun. When i first got there, i was forced to stripsearch I in the same room as adult staff, just with a curtain separating me from them. Forgot to mention, if you get on "safety" phase, or a certain phase, you're forced to defecate/urinate with an adult staff in the same bathroom. I think it was safety at least, it's been a little while since I've been there and I don't recall in what conditions you'd have to be watched in the bathroom on... this is similar to their hygiene protocol rule. Or, it was once called hygiene protocol, but was changed to something else while I was in the program. There was a solstice-wide meeting for "changed rules" and one of them was simply changing this name into something that would scare the parents less. That's what they said literally by the way, that they changed the name to scare the parents less. Anyways, the hygiene protocol rule is where you are forced to shower with adult staff watching! So fun! You need to wear a bathing suit, but you didn't need to before is what I've heard. They changed the rules because of legal trouble they might get into, is what I'm assuming. Even with a bathing suit, though, they still have to reach in their private parts and uncomfortably like,,, their whole body and it's still a huge breach of privacy. Is that not sexual abuse? It's Plain and simple. I will mention while I was there, there are so many mental gymnastics to being there. Essentially this program seems to me to weaponize therapeutic speech like "boundaries" "objectifying" "mental health" etc to mistreat kids. It was pretty... just, exhausting, you know? Nothing but good things to say about Solstice. We've been there almost a year now and my kiddo and I are communicating better, and she's not exhibited any of the behaviors since she started there. The staff has been phenomenal and all of them have communicated with us very regularly about what's happening with our daughter. Looking at the other reviews I find some of them suspect only because from the moment we toured, we have been supported in every aspect of our journey. Some kids are going to have a harder time there because it is an incredibly structured environment, and yes if you break the rules there are consequences but they are fairly short lived and kids can earn their privileges back pretty quickly for the most part. Just to be clear, the "basement" is a rec room with tv, board games etc. There are also bedrooms on the same level so it's not like it's a dungeon. it is reserved for students who need more supervision, usually because they are a posing a danger to themselves or someone else, have tried to elope, etc. they are put on a safety watch and moved to a space where they can be more closely supervised. Happy to talk with anyone who finds themselves needing to look at residential placement for their kids. I've toured several and solstice has one of the best programs out there. read more

Your child will be brutally emotionally abused daily. I was there for 11 months and 4 years later my PTSD from Solstice is still so severe I have an incredibly hard time functioning as an adult. They take away every right, treat you like a criminal who deserves nothing, and constantly tell you you are a bad kid who deserves to be punished for every mistake. I promise you if your child needs this level of help they are already suffering enough, they do not need to be punished farther. This will ruin their childhood. This will drive a wedge between you and your child for the rest of their life when they get out and realize how bad it really was and that you sent them there. Please listen to the people who actually lived through it not parents. Any time parents visit they treat us completely differently. This is cruel child abuse that no one deserves. They should not be in business after they have ruined so many peoples young lives. They delete many past residents google reviews which speak volumes. read more

I was a resident at Solstice for an entire year before being pulled from the program by my parents. I was pulled after receiving the last phase of the program, which meant that I would have graduated soon thereafter. I have to say that it was one of the most traumatizing things to happen to me in my life, being locked away like that with no connection to the outer world and no way to communicate my needs and how I was being treated. Many of the staff members were verbally and emotionally abusive/manipulative, saying things behind your back, spreading lies to therapists to make you stay longer, etc. They would monitor your phone calls and watch you write emails to your friends and family. Nothing that left or entered the place was authentic or true to oneself. Many of the girls were pretending to be something they weren't, which was encouraged by the faculty. The teachers were the worst part of the experience for me. One of them was particularly shameful and had ZERO regard for the girls' feelings, including mine. He made me cry on multiple occasions, and nobody, including myself, could ever say a word to him, as they were either scared to speak up (because you would get a harsh consequence) or because they were on his side because they were also staff. On Facebook, this same teacher has public pictures of him smoking, drinking, and partying shirtless (and this guy works at a treatment center with girls who are there for the same thing he was doing!). I am not only personally appalled by the fact that they would hire such a guy, a BOY--barely a man--who belittled us constantly and humiliated us in class, but who also showed such irresponsibility in posting things like this, that even I could find from across the country. I would also like to bring to your attention that we had to earn the "privilege"--I'm rolling my eyes right now--to even TALK. I am sixteen years old and did nothing to lose the right to SPEAK. I had to ask someone to listen to my conversation, even if it were just to ask what the homework was. That is animalistic. It was also a "privilege" to read books, paint my nails, and be able to sit in my room (without a door) alone. I was not allowed to talk to my parents when I needed to, and staff wouldn't call back on time or pick up when my parents called. Staff consistently belittled residents, and held themselves as our "superior," when they really just enjoyed the power struggle they displayed upon us. They would eat our treats and laugh in our face because we couldn't have any more. They got mad at us for asking for one more cookie on a holiday, even though there were enough for everyone at the facility to have at least one more. These are the people who had my treatment/well-being in the palm of their hands. I am still resentful toward these people and have nightmares that I am back in that place. I will not feel completely safe in my skin until I am eighteen and can never be involuntarily locked up in a place like that again. And yes. Solstice staff would talk behind our back, one even calling my friend a "dum-dum" and another one a "bitch." The director of the program tried to charge my mom more money than was required to pay. (She kept this from me for my benefit, but I found out anyway.) I am a changed person now, but only because I realized that I could only manage to get by if I had a friend in myself, even if not in the people around me. I had to rely on myself solely for self-love and care, because everyone around me was either too blind to the abuse or didn't have the courage to speak up. This place is absolutely awful. Do not send your kid here. Or anywhere in Utah for that matter. Sending a kid away to a program like this can do more damage than good, especially if the program blatantly ignored abuse and the laws. I have first hand experienced awful treatment and care that ended up with me regressing fully into the person I was before my previous programs. This place should honestly be shut down. They isolate gay kids, there's always an inappropriate staff and student relationship, and refused to respect and support my religion. They have done so many harmful things and legitimate refused to listen to listen to me ask for help. Everyone that I have met up with since, has suffered a great deal because of this place. I went to Solstice in 2012 and let me tell you, it was a mess. I am not someone who is bitter about my time there, nor do I write this to get back at the hell they caused me. I am writing this because parents and young women need to know the harsh reality of what it was like to be at Solstice. I don't even know where to begin...for starers, my therapist was terrible. Her name was Melissa and she is the main root of my trauma from Solstice. I will never forget the day she told me that my mother was never going to be stable and that I would always be as sick her. I cannot explain the amount of dread my whole body experienced when meeting with Melissa. When I explained my distrust with her, I was immediately silenced. Because I was the patient and she was the therapist. Therefore nothing I said had validity unless it was what THEY wanted to hear. I am graduating college with a double major and a minor with a 3.7 GPA. I am not a dumb girl. I know the rights and the wrongs and I know what a healthy patient-therapist relationship looks like. No one had that with Melissa. Another instance I witnessed a terrible restraint that brought me to tears. A young girl was restrained because she was sitting on the floor. yes, she was refusing to move but I assure you this girl was simply being defiant... she was no danger to anyone. Sadly, this provided a perfect opportunity for staff to once again abuse their power. Three male staff grabbed her to try and take her away only to end up wrestling and pinning her to the ground. The girl struggled and had a panic attack to which the staff laughed and continued to restrain her. Imagine this violence against your daughter. Lastly, I will NEVER forget when Melissa and I looked at my blog where I had a photo of myself when I was struggling with anorexia and Melissa laughed because I "just looked bizarre". She did not have any compassion for me, and apparently no knowledge on how to deal with eating disorders. I witnessed countless girls get verbally abused by staff who would later lie when the RT tried to bring it up. I know that I grew fearful for ever slipping up, for ever losing control. The whole place was a game and you just had to learn the hard way how to play it right. Everyone threw everyone under the bus. No one was honest. I don't know a single girl that was there during my time that had a good experience. Adult staff that worked there that had quit were willing to put forth testimonies about the injustices. It is amazing. Cozy campus, small class sizes, and a really warm environment are points I would share. Sending me to Solstice was a hard decision for my parents but they do not regret it at all and I am thankful they sent me there. I was in and out of programs for years before I was sent here, I was very sick and my parents worried about me everyday wondering if I was going to make it to the next day or not. There were definitely some hard times but I learned a lot and I grew a lot as a person. But I didnt just learn from this place, my parents learned many things that still help them to this day and help them deal with my other siblings. Rough but okay sometimes, really think outside the box with this one. Is your professional recommending it, and/or do you truly think your daughter can benefit from something like this? There's a LOT that goes into this decision. It's a very intense program; scarily intense many a time. There are also many lessons to be learned while there that if you internalize them, you will benefit. Think long and hard before choosing the fate of your daughter's life for the next ten to (I know a girl there who left after) two plus years. I personally would never do this to my daughter, although I have no bashing to do on Solstice here. There are many caring staff members, while there are some horrid ones. I attended solstice rtc for almost 2 years starting in 2015 and graduated the summer of 2016. It was the most traumatizing experience of my life. I would rather have anything happen to me again from my pre solstice trauma than ever go back there. I still have nightmares that I'm there and even though I'm too old to be forced back it is still my biggest fear. The emotional abuse was horrific. I was forced to clean bloody tampons out of the toilet with my bare hands by the lower level staff who weren't being supervised on multiple locations. They force patients to sign off on treatment plans that include diagnosis's, medication, and bullshit "progress reports". If you don't they withhold your privileges. They also force patients to meet with perspective parents and intrerveiw with them. They tell the parents before each interview that they (the parents) can ask us (the residents) any question and we can answer however we want, without fear of retribution. THIS IS NOT TRUE. As a patient, I had to lie to the many parents and guardians about solstice. If someone didn't , the other girls in the room would snitch in the person telling the truth. That's why they always put at least two of us if possible in the room, preferably three. I will live with the guilt of convincing people to send their children to solstice and for covering those "people" for the rest of my life's. Please don't make the same mistake. They once took a girl's speaking privileges away did weeks. She couldn't SPEAK to staff, therapists, or patients, or HER FAMILY for weeks. She slept in a (finished basement). She wasn't allowed to go to groups, school, or therapy. This was because she kissed a couple girls and lied about it. They sometimes made us, the patients vote on whether or not we wanted this to happen to people. They didn't always listen to the vote, but still. They call this "positive peer pressure". I can assure you, this pressure is nothing more than rewarded bullying and emotional abuse. It was this emotional abuse that lead to my suicide attempt, while in the program. The pressure was nonstop. My therapist, literally said they would, " break [me] down to build [me] back up." They broke me for so long. By the time I left, I was almost completely brainwashed. I believe what had been drilled into my head again and again. They told me I wasn't abused as a child, that I never had a "legitimate" eating disorder, that I didn't use substances before solstice and so much more. They also convinced me that the awful things that they did there were a result of my poor decisions that led me there. If I was bothered by the abuse or stood up for myself it was because I was "entitled". It makes me want to throw up to know that my name and face are still proudly displayed on the walls as a success story. I am, but in spite of solstice, not because of it. I will never erase the guilt of helping that system run, you don't want to feel the same way, I promise. This place should be shut down, it robbed me of my own voice and autonomy in a way my previous physical, emotional, and sexual abuse can't compare to. They bill themselves as a tough love treatment center that will give you you kid back again. In one way, they were right, but only in the sense that I would literally prostitue myself before ever going back. Please don't let this happen to anyone else.
