I wander a lot thru Nevada City and one day I happened upon Solstice. The funny and funky window dressings caught my eyes and thought, "I just gotta' see what THIS store is all about ".I just had to go in. I do most of my shopping at thrift stores and this is the next best thing. Love the place whether I am buying or just schmoozing. BTW, I had a friend, 'Garlic' (RIP) whom I used to beg to tell me where he got his crazy hats, scarves, and every other crazy outfit he wore but he would never tell me. It was Solstice! Best thrift store I've ever found! Not only do they offer appropriate values to old items but they take more than the "average" stuff due to their costume themed selection of accessories/outfits. I was able to sell 4 of my old Halloween costumes + 2 full totes of old clothes which resulted in $495 value (30% cash option or 50% trade) so I walked out of there with 2 new Halloween costumes & a $135 CASH! Such a Fun Store and a great addition to that empty space. The Mother Daughter Team are a pleasure to deal with. They have sold many of my garments and collectables. I have noticed unreasonable customers making silly demands on the stuff they bring in.to sell. Always found something special at Solstice. Wish they were open more days. read more

I am a local in the area and I shop at this store often and have never found the customer service lacking. However I'm not one of those people that like to be stalked by employees while I shop either. If I need help, I ask for it, and I get it. I love this shop! Wow looks like this place needs some training. Hey, totally get the local mom and pop shop that doesn't invest in training or hiring high quality people but this is on another level. Came in here and observed some sketchy things. Hipster girl with oversized glasses incredibly unprofessional to an older woman in front of me. Ok, having a bad day? I came back to sell some high end clothes (I hate to name drop but including a Gucci purse sitting in the closet). I came back and said girl said she's give me $30 total including 12 for the purse that was genuine. I sad no thanks and took my stuff to only be yelled at in front of customers for taking it. Excuse me? Shocking behavior I haven't ever seen. Never shopping at this spot, I'd rather support a chain store with better behavior read more

used to love this store, I have gone to solstice for over 5 years. I also worked around the corner down commercial st. For over 3 years, and would go to solstice often and was considered a regular. I recently went in to sell some clothes because i was moving to a smaller place and didn't need so many. The African-American woman is the buyer, She is extremely rude to me, the last 3 times I've visited the store. She said my clothes smell like smoke and I need to wash them before coming back in. Why is this lady so critical on me, that she is smelling my clothes when I come in to sell them? She then bought a few items from me, after criticizing me, for practically nothing because of the reduced price of the smell. If you're incapable of being kind or respectful, then please don't do customer service jobs! If you see the African American woman dont even bother going in. As much as I used to enjoy going to solstice, I refuse to support a business that doesn't support the community. read more

Being a local resident, I have visited this store on many occasions to browse for clothing. I have found that they typically will only purchase a fourth of what I bring in. During my recent visit I was near the counter while two employees were going through the clothes I brought in. The male employee very loudly scrutinized nearly every piece, including comments like "this is just a cheap Calvin Klein look-alike" and "this looks like something a 70 year old would wear". It was unprofessional to say the least, especially given the quality of the clothes they sell. My money will be better spent elsewhere in the future. read more

Solstice is a godsend for the women and men of Nevada County. Finally, a hip and well-stocked place to buy, sell, and trade clothes, shoes, accessories, and housewares and costumes. The items for sale are abundant, beautiful and unique, and reasonably priced (vintage and modern). And the space itself is nice, clean, spacious, and welcoming. I am in there a lot, and always recommend it to people. (If you are coming to visit from out of town, go there!). But there is one huge drawback. The service. It confounds me that small business owners would approach customer relations the way these women do. Today something happened that finally convinced me to write the review I've been planning for a while. My sister went in and traded some clothes. Later she realized that she had accidentally placed one of her favorite items of clothing in the box and that they had taken it in trade. She went back a few hours later and they made her pay full price for the garment. They could have easily just asked her to pay the trade amount they had given her for it that morning (half of what was on the price tag) and called it even. It only makes sense to honor an honest mistake and extend kindness towards your frequent customers. Some of the women who work there are smiley and warm but the mother/daughter team who own it are, though not mean, certainly not friendly, do not greet customers when they come in, don't smile, and don't go out of their way to be kind or helpful. As a customer, I always feel like an inconvenience to them. Aside from that, the way things are run behind the counter seem disorganized and unprofessional. In my many years in California I have visited a lot of buy/sell/trade clothing stores throughout the state and am struck by the difference in professionalism. At most places your trade credit is put on a card (like a debit card) and put into your keeping. At Solstice it is written on the back of a receipt and filed away in store, and I have seen these slips get so confusing from writing in different scripts scattered all over the page that the workers can't tell how much credit you have and tell you to come back when someone else is there who may be able to figure it out. They actually lost the receipt of a friend of mine and she had to pay for the items she knew she had credit enough to cover. Plus, if you do buy something with credit you then have to pay the tax with cash. It's inconvenient and unnecessary (there is obviously a way to overcome that since other places in California aren't like that). Their selection and presentation are just too good to be running the counter in this primitive manner. They seem to be more consistent with their buying days now, but in the past you never knew when would be a good time to take things in. Or you'd be told to come in on Wednesday when so-and-so would be working, and then show up and she's not there and they aren't buying. They have also told me before to bring back a certain item in the spring or fall, and then when I do they don't take it. Overall it is really a fantastic shop and I am grateful for its existence in this town, and I go in there all the time despite all these issues, but I really wish they'd streamline their credit system and work on their customer service. read more

I stumbled upon this store by accident yesterday and it's awesome! Looking for some jeans? They've got some. Pirate costume? That too. Shoes, accessories, hats and some amazing corsets? Yep, that too! I'm actually going back today (and driving an hour just to shop here) for something I saw yesterday and I can't stop thinking about. The selection in this store is great. However I must say that as a consigner I am highly disapointed by the way they price the nicer name brand items in the store. I am afraid to bring in my designer jeans because I know I won't male a profit off of the price they label it. Then today the younger worker with curly hair got rude an defensive at me an actually thrust all my items back into my hands for questioning why she had low balled me on brand new guess mens shirt that retailed for over $55.00. By pricing it @ $9.00 I would only get 35% of that. I can honestly say I have been flipping clothes for profit for over 4 years now and I am good at it. However its hard to make any real money when soltice is so cheap to its consigners. Shame on them. That shirt should have been priced @ $16.00 that's all I'm saying. And that's just one example of items they have lowballed me on. read more

I came into the store for Halloween accessories and loved the feel of the place. It was bustling with activity, but the kind staff took time to help me find what I needed. I found all sorts of things for my kid's costume and most of the prices were reasonable. There was a hat without a tag on it that the person helping me asked her boss how much it was and she overcharged me by quite a bit I feel (it was really cheap quality from China.) I'm sure that she didn't look at how much it cost them before she priced it. Oh well, I needed it so I bought it anyway. It's good to support a local business. read more

The employees are incredibly rude, especially one older female I encountered who- as soon as I walked in the door- said "We aren't taking any clothing today." which yes, is fair, but the tone she said it in really put me off. I left, and waited about a week before calling ahead and asking if they were buying that day. The woman on the phone answered yes, but when I went in she looked at 1 item in the bag i brought and shoved it back in and said that they couldn't take anything. The employees used to be really fun and sweet, and attentive. Recent hires are rude. The selection seems to have gone downhill as well. . read more

Make sure you receive a copy of receipt for clothes that you consign! They lost my 80.00 credit and were in no hurry to resolve or look for it after repeated visits to store and phone calls. Ended up reporting them to better business bureau and was told by BBB, that they never responded to report...too bad, I thought it was a great little shop! read more
