The horchata is sweet and light, not filling you while eating, while also being homemade alongside the "mango tango" also being a great refresher to start your day. The food was ok at best. The waffle was soft and mushy. It took 40 minutes to get eggs, waffle, and sausage. If you want any condiments you have to ask. Then wait while your food gets cold. I was really hoping the food would be good but unfortunately not. read more

Their breakfast burritos are the closest to San Diego we've been able to find since moving back East. The décor, service, and food are all excellent! I have followed the intermittent saga of burritos in Charlottesville for over 20 years. From Baja Rapido, food carts, Atomic Burrito, Cinema Taco, Baja Bean, and more, it has been hard to get a non-chain store burrito consistently. Let's frequent Sombrero's to keep it open and thriving! I had a burrito (made to order and super generous portion) today and a burrito bowl last week. Both were delicious. When I ate in they gave me free chips and salsa. Love that! If it weren't for Yelp, I'm not sure I would've known about this place! It's tucked away in York Place at the mall, where most stores are still closed because of Covid. This is a family run business, their young son took my order and nailed it! I got 2 bowls- 1 with chorizo and 1 with steak. These are some hefty serving sizes once you pile on the unlimited amount of toppings you have to choose from! Their chorizo was super tasty and mixed well with the flavors from the beans, grilled veggies, and sauces I put on. The steak must have been good, too, judging on how fast that bowl was eaten! However, their queso sauce seemed pretty runny like they mixed it with water, and their mango habanero and cilantro lime sauce also seemed a bit bland. Also, their website says all orders come with corn chips on the side, but ours didn't and I didn't check the bag before leaving! *face palm* I would love to come back and try their other dishes like the empanada or tamales, and definitely want to get in on the flan! We decided we were going to go visit Sombreros after some word of mouth recommendations that their food and menu were fantastic. We stopped in and were met by great, friendly service! I had their Huarache with Chorizo and could not recommend them more! The service was friendly, the food came out prompt and warm, and the food was fantastic! This place is AMAZING for lunch! It's such a good deal for bowls or tacos at $10 for any of the protein--this includes the shrimp and fish!! The shrimp here is truly some of the best I've had at any restaurant. It's perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection (not over cooked or undercooked)! Every meal comes with free corn chips even when you get it to go. The ingredients taste fresh and the portion is perfect for lunch (I am very full). Couldn't have had a better experience getting Sombrero's catering for a bachelorette party from Sombreros. Our party ordered the taco bar for 10, which included 2 types of meat (beef + chicken), rice, beans, lettuce, pico, sour cream, cheese, 2 types of salsa, chips and tortillas. It was enough food to feed 20! Everyone loved it and we had plenty of extra. The staff went out of their way to make it convenient and easily packed up for us, and even called to make sure we didn't forget the extra salsa. Having recently moved to Charlottesville from Arizona, I am always on the lookout for good Mexican food. My husband and I sought out this restaurant due to high ratings, and it did not disappoint! We shared the burro ahogado with shredded chicken, smothered in tomatillo salsa, and a side of chips and guacamole. The large portions made this plenty of food to share. The food was absolutely fantastic, second only to the service! The owners are very warm, and take genuine pride in the food they serve. We had a wonderful conversation with one of the owners, who also recommended a few Mexican restaurants and markets in Charlottesville. It was nice to see how proud he was to be part of a larger community of restaurateurs. The restaurant itself was clean, inviting, and parking behind the restaurant was very convenient. The food is definitely worth the short trip to Standardsville. We cannot wait to come back and try more of the menu. read more

Stopped in on a June weekend. Appreciate they require customers to have masks, and they provide hand sanitizer at the entrance. Love the family-owned and involved apparent presence. All wait staff and owners in masks. A very sweet and professional little boy led me to where to order and sit, and he, a sibling(?), and the owners regularly checked in. You can sit in and seating is distanced. But the food... was so incredibly good and full of flavor. I got a rice bowl with shrimp that was so well seasoned. Everything was fresh. We had a burro ahogado and the vegetarian alambre and both were really excellent. The sauce was flavorful, the tortillas were soft, the avocados and guacamole were fresh-tasting and delicious. We also tried the queso dip, which was similarly flavorful and good. It was a real treat to have authentic Mexican food, lovingly prepared--something of a rarity in the eastern states. Very happy to have another place to eat in Our small town that is open for dinner!! You order at the counter, pay, take a seat and they bring the food to you. It's popular with local students, while we were there several popped in for the yummy chips and queso "to go" on their way to PVCC classes. Very good size portions. Very clean. Some may say limited menu choices but they have the basic Mexican food: burritos, taquitos, salsa, pico de gallo, queso dip.
