I don't really feel completely comfortable giving stars to churches. I came to visit this church…read morebecause my cousins and their kids are active members. I love worshiping with family. I was immediately impressed by the worship team and slide shows that went along with the service. The visiting preacher was funny and light hearted and preached directly from scripture. I think if you were theologically moderate or a little conservative this is probably a good fit for you. However, they have great children's ministries and a Hispanic service and tons of college outreach so there's definitely great ministries for everyone. There is complementary coffee upon entering and age-appropriate areas for little kiddos and older kiddos. I haven't heard the main pastor preach yet, so I will let you know later. We plan on coming back at least once a month. Overall, mainly, I will return for the fabulous worship music and to worship with family.

I've long wanted to stop at Roofless Church during my visits to the New Harmony area, however, I've…read morenever had the best timing. I finally was able to make a brief visit. I'm always envious of really cool churches like Roofless Church. It's under the management of the Robert Lee Blaffer Foundation. It's part of a large sanctuary known as the Jane Blaffer Owen sanctuary (and yes, she was a descendant of Robert Owen). A petroleum geologist by trade, Blaffer Owen was a graduate of Union Theological Seminary and studied under well-known theologian Paul Tillich. She commissioned Philip Johnson to design the Roofless Church. The JBO sanctuary features gardens, fountains, water features, sculptures, creative residences, and other historic structures. She also created other buildings outside the sanctuary and was known for her 60-year history of generosity with New Harmony. Roofless Church is non-denominational. It's on the north edge of New Harmony and overlooks the Wabash River flood plain. It has 12' high walls and a ceremonial entry with gilded gates designed by Jacques Lipchitz. There are six sacred spaces within the walls. There's a processional (Roofless Church is often used for weddings), a rectangular courtyard, and multiple other sacred spaces along with sculptures and the famous canopy by which nearly anyone can identify it. Roofless Church has grown over time. Originally, it was quite simple. It's now what I'd call quietly elegant. It's generally accessible, though during the winter this is dramatically decreased. As noted, the space can be rented. Despite the park-like appearance, Roofless Church is a consecrated church and rules are rather strict around rental. That said, this is definitely worth checking out - especially for folks like me who love historic churches. Visiting this one was a bucket list visit, and I'm so glad I finally made it.
